Why would a company want to employ a graduate of finance to do what any secondary school leaver can do? perhaps they have too much money. Bah, they should stop rubbing it in our faces.

PoliticsRe: Boycott Nigerian Breweries: Festus Odimegwu And 3rd Term by Seun(mod): 10:58pm On May 19, 2006
You can't possibly raise enough awareness by this campaign to make even a dent in their profits. Something like the third term campaign is perfectly legitimate in a democratic state, apart from the bribery aspect. If this man you want to "get" has been involved in the offering of huge sums of money to senators then he can be charged for that.
PoliticsRe: Prof. Charles Soludo For President by Seun(mod): 10:43pm On May 19, 2006
Here's what will happen if you vote for him:

Fake News: Sexy Charles Soludo Plans To Recapitalize Nigeria
https://i1.tinypic.com/nxm9s3.jpg
CBN Governor Charles Soludo is a very sexy man, He was chosen as the world’s sexiest banker for his feat of making his picture appear in 4 out of every 5 newspapers editions published in Nigeria during 2006. He has cute dimples, lovely brown skin and an infectious smile that makes it easy for us to forget the unemployment he created in the banking sector to reduce his workload as regulator.

If elected as president in 2007, he plans to weed out the weak and poor Nigerians who have been tainted by corruption: by increasing the minimum capitalization requirement of each Nigerian from 0 naira to 400,000 naira. Individuals who cannot raise 400,000 naira cash are advised to put themselves up for acquisition by rich friends or relatives, or else they run the risk of being made available for cherry-picking by slave-masters at 1 naira each.

So in short, I believe in the use of tariffs, tax and subsidies to alter the behaviors of the people
And who determines what behaviours are right or wrong? Don't you think progressive tax of income alters people's behaviour to serve the needs of others less in order to avoid tax? What's the benefit of discouraging someone who wants to work really hard to make a lot of money? If people work hard and they are rewarded, good for them!
PoliticsRe: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by Seun(mod): 2:21am On May 19, 2006
the problem of people leaving would not be a problem if there was a glorious revolution
Glorious revolution? There is no such thing; it only exists in the mind of political propagandists.

Nutter:
The quiz has me down as a STATIST. I however don't agree fully with it's description. I don't think there are enough questions in the quiz to adequately tease out the mind-set of respondents.
Tell us more about your political beliefs. Should government take money from rich people to feed the poor people? Should government create laws against victimless 'crimes' like homosexuality and smoking?
PoliticsRe: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by Seun(mod): 2:13am On May 19, 2006
The way I see it, communism is the like the kind of relationship you have between family members.
I agree completely. The dad makes the decisions, the mom communicates them, and the children carry them out. So who gets to be the father in a country that is run by a family? The government. The children? The masses. When the children grow older and wiser, they leave, because this paternalistic system isn't ideal or realistic.
PoliticsRe: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by Seun(mod): 2:03am On May 19, 2006
Seun, courts and the police must be run without profit in mind.
The best 'private police' I can imagine is to have the government regulating private armed groups for hire the way they regulate the drug industry. 'Private courts' are simply arbitrators. In fact, private security groups and arbitrators are already competing side by side with the state run systems. Arbitration is known to be cheaper than lawsuits. I don't really think there is any business run without profit in mind. Policemen must eat, too, and they know that! The only thing that differs is who is feeding them: private citizens or the tax machinery.

If you privatize them, they would just become an extension of the capitalists.
Well I'm a capitalist, and so is every Mama Put in Oshodi market. Police in our hands is in safe hands! cheesy

PoliticsRe: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by Seun(mod): 1:53am On May 19, 2006
You believe in Communism in the 21st century? Then let me tell you why I'm a capitalist to the core: it is because human beings are basically selfish. Capitalism embraces this fact and uses it to the benefit of society, while socialism tries to make people act against their natural instincts. In an effort to force people into acting "for the common good", socialist societies quickly turn into dictatorial states. Because people will always be people.

Do you think Nairaland will be here if I was doing it for any other purpose than to make a living? Heh, no way! The emotional strain sometimes is enough to make me just shut down the site, but i keep going because I'm enjoying the freedom to use what I have (webmastering skills, internet access, etc) to get what I want (financial independence and a platform to influence people a little). Freedom to pursue my interests in a way that also benefits others.

I am not forced to build this site, and you're not forced to participate, nor are the advertisers forced to place their ads here. Yet we find ourselves cooperating with each other in order to pursue personal interests. that's the way, man!

I love you! Hmmm, I think we have a problem of not having many goods to sell except oil.

Quick note: The exchange rate (per se) doesn't have any effect on exports vs imports if it's not moving - some people reading your post might not appreciate the difference between appreciation and being 'high'. smiley
PoliticsRe: World's Shortest Political Quiz: Just Two Questions! by Seun(mod): 1:37am On May 19, 2006
In the personal freedom axis, I'm right at the center (close to conservative) because I have doubts about people's ability to make responsible decisions when they enjoy absolute freedom. I don't yet understand how private courts and police would work, but I understand private production of other services quite well.

That depends on whether or not you agree that the Nairaland Forum is my property! cheesy

update: And by the way, Representative Democracy is the government of those who have time to meddle in others' affairs. It's not government of the people in practice. People only vote for the lesser evil. QED.

PoliticsRe: Nigeria's Foreign Reserves: Why Suffer In The Midst Of Plenty? by Seun(mod): 8:39pm On May 18, 2006
I disagree completely with this line of thinking. Money should only be spent after serious consideration. governments are more likely to be wasteful than the other way round, so if our government is able to control it's appetite for consumption of foreign exchange we should be praising them. Do you want the money to be poured down the drain as usual, in the name of giving us a better life? Let them just keep the reserves as long as possible. Thanks.
