A former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has said he can sacrifice his life in the interest of Nigeria. However, he said he would not do the same for any political party. He said this on Thursday during a visit to his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta by the presidential candidate of the National Conscience Party, Dr. Martins Onovo. He said since he left office his pre-occupation had been the promotion of the country’s interest, adding that it would be foolish for anyone to say Nigeria did not belong to anybody. He said, “My first pre-occupation is what is best for Nigeria. Nigeria first, party second and any other thing, third. I can sacrifice anything in the interest of Nigeria and I can sacrifice my own life for Nigeria. “I can’t sacrifice my life for any party’s interest but I’ll sacrifice my life in the interest of Nigeria.” He frowned on the situation where everyone would keep quiet and watch things degenerate in the country. While commending the late legal icon, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, the founder of the NCP, he said though some people might not agree with his brand of activism, he was a veritable voice of conscience. He said, “Let me hasten to wish you every success in your endeavour and also pay tribute, as I have done in my recent book, to the founder of your party, Gani Fawehinmi. I believe he was a genuine social critic. Though you may not agree with all he said or how he went about it but he was definitely a genuine social critic. “So if you, as the flag bearer of the party, believed that you should follow on his footsteps of integrity and genuine critical and committed analysis and criticism of the situation in the country, I think nobody will fault you.” He advised the party to accept whatever was the outcome of the election, if the election was free, fair and uninterrupted. He said that people should not necessarily be in government before they could contribute to the nation’s development. He said, “In this part of the world, we have a saying that if people sleep and they put their heads on the same pillow, they are in danger. That means there should be some people that should be critically looking and watching and also able to speak up. They should speak up, no matter what others may say. “Because people may come up and say Nigeria doesn’t belong to anybody, I believe that is a stupid saying. Nigeria belongs to all of us because anything that doesn’t belong to anybody, anything can happen to it. For me, Nigeria belongs to all of us and we are stakeholders in this country. “Let me make my own position clear, I am a card carrying member of the PDP, because that is the party on which platform I became the President of this country. “If what you’re trying to do is in the best interest of Nigeria and Nigerians accept and vote for you, who I am I not to accept you as President of Nigeria, I will. But in this your campaign, try to inform, woo and to convince the electorates but whatever may be the outcome of the election after you have done all that, once the election is free and fair and undisturbed, uninterrupted, then you have to accept the verdict of the people.” Onovo said his government, if voted, would continue with the developmental initiative of the former President. He said, “Our programme is designed to lead to the abolition of poverty through full employment, improve health care and electricity supply and energy which are very critical to industrial development. “We are very aware that you did very few critical things in government when you were there and some of those we wish to continue when we get to office, particularly the anti-corruption efforts, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission, we intend to continue. “We intend, when we get elected with your guidance, to your effectiveness, to check the loss in national revenue so that we have funds to carry out the developmental programmes we’ve promised our people.” www.punchng.com/news/im-ready-to-die-for-nigeria-obasanjo/ |
THE presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to deploy more soldiers and other security operatives in the troubled North-East ravaged by Boko Haram insurgents rather than keep them for the 2015 general elections. Buhari, who made this call during a meeting with stakeholders of Ogoni ethnic nationality in the Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State on Thursday, also said that, if voted into power, his administration would implement the report of the United Nations Environment Programme on the clean-up of Ogoniland. He argued that the Boko Haram onslaught would have been a thing of the past if the Federal Government had moved the number of soldiers, police and operatives of the State Security Service deployed during elections to Borno and Yobe states as well as the other areas affected by insurgency. He said, “I have made this comment before and the Federal Government refused to react to it; the number of soldiers, policemen and officers of the State Security Services they deploy during elections, if they had deployed them to Borno and Yobe states to fight Boko Haram, by now, Boko Haram would have been history. “Boko Haram is not a religious group; Boko Haram is not an ethnic group. Boko Haram is a terrorist group. They attack people in schools, they attack people in Churches, they attack people in Mosques, they attack people in markets, and they shout Allahu Akbah ! No religion rejoices over the blood of innocent people.” The former Head of State promised that he would put an end to the pollution in Ogoniland if elected as the President of the country during the February 14 election. Buhari reiterated his promise to fight terrorism, corruption and other forms of crimes, if elected President. Earlier, the Director-General of the Buhari/Osinbajo Campaign Organisation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, had asked President Jonathan to explain to Nigerians and the world why he had refused to implement the UNEP report on the clean-up of Ogoniland. Amaechi said the President’s hatred for the people of Ogoni could be responsible for his inability to implement the UNEP report since the funds that would be used to clean up Ogoniland would come from Shell Petroleum Company. “Let President Goodluck Jonathan tell us why he has not allowed the implementation of the UNEP report. He has no reason. The money to be spent in the implementation of the report is not his; the money belongs to Shell,” he said. www.punchng.com/news/deploy-soldiers-against-bharam-not-for-elections-buhari/ |

The Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, has said that the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan should be held responsible for the steady theft of crude oil in the Niger Delta region. The governor, according to a statement in Osogbo on Monday by his media aide, Mr. Semiu Okanlawon, spoke at the public presentation of a book authored by Mr. Amitolu Shitu, to mark his 50th birthday. He said that the nation had continued to lose huge resources to oil theft despite the fact that the Federal Government was in control of the Nigerian Army, the Navy, the Air Force and other security agencies. Apart from the government being in control of the security agencies, the governor said that the present administration, headed by Jonathan, also awarded contract of securing the nation’s pipelines to an individual. But despite these arrangements, he said the nation had continued to lose its resources to some few persons. Aregbesola said that the only way Nigerians could bring an end to this corruption and others, allegedly being perpetrated by the Peoples Democratic Party-led government, was to vote out Jonathan and other PDP candidates in the 2015 elections. He said, “Wherever you find the PDP, you will find misery, poverty and under-development. We must remember that the encounter of our people and experience, especially in the South-West geo-political zone, have never brought anything positive. From time immemorial, our people had associated their party with misfortune. And till today, they remain the same,” Aregbesola told the audience. He added, “The PDP-led Federal Government has foisted double tragedy on the people through lack of transparency in oil revenues. Even before the price of crude oil crashed in the international market, the PDP-led Federal Government had robbed Nigerians of the oil fortunes through fraud of unimaginable proportions. “The Federal Government is the authority in charge of the Navy, the Army, the Police, Air Force and other security agencies, yet, they tell us that 400,000 barrels of crude are stolen. Who is stealing the crude oil? And these are despite a questionable contract for the protection of oil pipelines and waterways awarded to an individual. They have no other excuse to give. The only way is to vote them out.” The governor stated that the Federal Government was doing nothing to stop those stealing the nation’s resources, claiming that the nation could be saved of this loss if the leadership was willing to fight oil thieves. He claimed that the same Federal Government, which had robbed the country of the oil revenues, had made it extremely difficult for the development of the non-oil sector. He said the social, political and economic disorders being witnessed were direct results of the “visionlessness PDP government.” Aregbesola reminded Nigerians of the roles played by the likes of Amitolu Shittu and others who were jailed, forced to exile, killed and harassed unjustly for the enthronement of a people’s government. “This is the time for all of you to reconvene and ensure that we rescue our country before it is too late,” he added. Shittu, in his speech also urged Nigerians to rise up and vote against bad governance while rallying support for the APC presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). http://www.punchng.com/news/aregbesola-blames-jonathan-for-oil-theft-in-n-delta/

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party has defended the donation of N21.27bn to its presidential campaign by some individuals and governors in the party. Some of the critics wondered why the party and President Goodluck Jonathan would also collect donations from governors who were unable to pay salaries to workers in their states. The governors collectively donated N1.05bn. Some lawyers, including Senior Advocates of Nigeria, have also called for the prosecution of the party and the donors. But the party said that those criticising the party and President Goodluck Jonathan for the money were merely bellyaching. The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Prof. Wale Oladipo, who spoke in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Monday, said the party did not flout any law in raising the funds. Oladipo said those criticising the party were free to do so, adding that “comments are free” and that those speaking against the donation were ignorant of the law. He said those complaining about the donation might also not be aware that some group of individuals came together to make donations. He said Nigerians should know that a presidential campaign is money-spinning in Nigeria. Oladipo said, “Comments are free. But Nigerians should know that elections and campaigns are money-spinning; they cost money. “But let me add that as long as the fund-raising we did was and is still within the armpit of the law, then we have not breached any law. “What we did was legitimate. We didn’t force anyone to donate at all. “You may wish to know that some employees came together to donate. Those bellyaching are busybodies, but let them know that what we did is within the law and the Constitution is not against it.” Oladipo assured Nigerians and members of the party, including the donors, that the money would be judiciously spent. On the submission of the party’s candidates names to the Independent National Electoral Commission, Oladipo said the party was not having problems in this regards. Already, he said the party had submitted the names of its 109 senatorial candidates to the commission. He said, “We are on course concerning the submission of our candidates’ names to the INEC. Already, we have submitted the names of our 109 senatorial candidates to the commission. “The names of our presidential candidate and that of his running mate is also there. We have also submitted the names of all our candidates for the House of Representatives. Then, the names of governors and their deputies are with the commission.” He said the Presidential Campaign Committee of the party would soon be inaugurated to handle President Jonathan’s campaign. http://www.punchng.com/news/n21bn-donation-legal-pdp-tells-critics/ |
A mechanic, Olajide Olaniran, has stabbed a 34-year-old man, Julius Joseph, for allegedly pinging on the road while driving in the Ijaiye area of Lagos State. PUNCH gathered that Joseph was returning from a bank in the area to withdraw money when Olaniran, who was in a Toyota Corolla, blocked the road and accused him of pinging and driving. It was, however, learnt that Joseph was checking an alert he received on his phone when the incident occured. PUNCH Metro learnt that Joseph challenged the 42-year-old mechanic for driving against the traffic and both men alighted from their cars. Following an altercation between the two, Olaniyan, who hails from Ibadan, Oyo State, allegedly used a bottle to stab Joseph after which he made off with his (Joseph’s) two phones and N5,000. The victim reportedly slumped at the spot having lost much blood. He was said to have been rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, and was later referred to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi for intensive care. Our correspondent learnt that the suspect was arrested after the incident was reported at the Meiran Police Station. A prosecutor, Lugard Ahonle, subsequently brought him before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court sitting in Ijaiye on five counts bordering on assault and stealing. The charges read in part, “That you, Olajide Olaniran, on October 8, 2014 at about 5pm at Jolaco Filling Station, Obadeyi, Ijaiye, Lagos State, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did assault one Julius Joseph, by beating him up for challenging you while driving against the traffic with your Toyota Corolla saloon car. “That you, on the same date, time and place, in the aforesaid magisterial district, did attempt to kill one Julius Joseph by stabbing him severally on his two hands over an argument between the two of you. “That you did steal a Samsung iPhone valued at N60,000, Q10 BlackBerry valued at N98,000 and a sum of N5,000, property of one Julius Joseph. The defendant pleaded not guilty to the offences, which the police said contravened sections 55, 170, 243, 285, 404, Vol. 44 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011. The presiding magistrate, Mrs. T. Akani, admitted him to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum. Akani adjourned the case till January 26, 2015 for mention. http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/mechanic-stabs-man-for-pinging-while-driving/ |
No fewer than 70,000 civil servants in 30 Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government have yet to receive their three months’ salaries. The Secretary-General of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, Mr. Alade Lawal, made this known just as investigations by The PUNCH revealed that states like Osun, Oyo, Benue and Plateau are owing their workers between three and four months’ salaries. Prominent among the ministries listed by Lawal during an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja on Monday are Education, Works, Labour and Productivity, Mines and Power. He said, “About eight MDAs have been owing workers their salaries from October. The number rose to 11 in November and in December, hit 30, including departments and agencies.” Asked what was responsible for the increase in the number of MDAs indebted to their workers, Lawal said some government officials involved in salary payments were engaged in a game of deceit. He said, “They are telling us that some of the MDAs are involved in expenditure items different from salaries. They said they were spending on items not related to salaries. But that is not supposed to be the fault of the workers. “There should be synergy in government whereby they have to work in tandem with the Budget Office and Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation. They know what they are doing, they are muddling up the whole exercise and suffering workers unnecessarily.” He said the government had no tangible reason for not paying the workers, having promised to do so before December 24. “As of December 22, they promised us that before Wednesday, December 24, these payments would be made. But as I am talking to you now, affected workers have not been paid. “The Ministry of Works alone has about 26,000 workers. If you add them together, they can’t be less than 70,000 workers that are affected. “We have been liaising with our people. But you know, this is a festive period and it has affected some of the trade union actions we intended taking. The promise that they made last week which they also told the press that they would pay before Christmas, we thought they were serious about it. But latest developments indicate that they are deceiving us.” The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had in a statement by her Special Adviser on Communication, Mr. Paul Nwabuikwu, on December 22 promised that the salary arrears of civil servants in MDAs would be paid before Christmas. The PUNCH gathered on Monday that civil servants in states like Osun, Oyo, Benue, Plateau and Abia had a bleak Christmas as they are being owed between two and four-month salaries. In Osun State for instance, the Chairman of state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Mr. Saka Adesiyan, told one of our correspondents in Osogbo that workers were being owed October, November and December salaries. The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Mr. Boye Abolarin, also confirmed that secondary school teachers were being owed October, November and December salaries. Abolarin said that workers were subjected to hardship while politicians were feeding fat especially during the Yuletide. Governor Rauf Aregbesola, however, blamed the development on the dwindling monthly allocations to the state. Aregbesola, in a statement made available to our correspondent by his media aide, Semiu Okanlawon, said, “Either at the federal or at the state level, where is it that workers are being paid as and when due? “We thought this situation will not last long. That was why we used our strategic reserve to augment salaries for one year. All our savings were spent on augmentation of salaries.” In Oyo, the state NLC Chairman, Basiru Alli, said that the November and December salaries of some workers were being awaited. He said, “I will not say that government in the state is owing us, it is actually delaying payment of workers salaries. As of now, not all workers have been paid November salaries. Some are still waiting for theirs. We do not know when the December salary will come.” Asked what efforts the NLC was making to ensure all the workers got paid, Alli said that they were told by the government that dwindling allocations from the Federal Government were responsible. “We hold consultations with the government from time to time and what we were told the last time was that it was not a deliberate attempt to delay the salaries but due to dwindling allocations, the state had to manage its resources.” But the Special Adviser to Governor Abiola Ajimobi on Media, Dr. Festus Adedayo, said that all workers had been paid November salaries. He said, “The state government is passionate about staff welfare. We are handicapped by the dwindling allocations from the Federal Government. We have a wage bill of N4.9bn but the allocation we have this month was N2.9bn. Last month, the state got N3.1bn from the Federal Government. We are working hard to ensure workers are paid the December salaries.” The situation in Benue State is not better as the government is also currently owing three months’ salaries. Before the Yuletide, the government owed workers five months’ salaries but it paid two months’ salaries at different intervals. A civil servant, who pleaded anonymity told The PUNCH that a day to Christmas, some of his colleagues received alert for one month salary while on Monday, others received alert for their second salary payment. The civil servant explained that they could not enjoy the Yuletide due to the debts they had incurred. He said, “What the state government paid to us was used to settle debts . “Mind you, we from the mainstream civil service are not on any industrial action but the state is currently owing us three month-salaries. I can tell you that the situation is worse for lecturers as they have been on half salaries for five months.” Investigations by The PUNCH in Abia State indicated that while civil servants in the ministries had received their November and December salaries, their counterparts in the parastatals were being owed some months . The Chairman, NLC in the state, Sylvanus Eye, said workers in the parastatals had not been paid November and December salaries. He added that teachers as well as council workers were also being owed arrears of two months. The state leadership of NLC had about three weeks ago picketed the office of the Accountant General over the salary arrears of the parastatal workers and for allegedly witholding check- off dues of the union. When contacted, the Accountant General, Gabriel Onyendilefu, said that “the function of payment is dependent on available cash”. He explained that in the past five months, the state’s allocations from the federation accounts had been dwindling following the constant fall in the price of crude oil. In Kogi State, local governments’ workers complained that they only received half of their salaries for October and November. They alleged that they still had some backlogs of salaries that were not fully paid. A source, who pleaded anonymity, said the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, had informed them that they would receive alert of their December payment on Tuesday(today). The NLC Chairman, Plateau State chapter, Mr. Jibrin Bancir, told one of our correspondents that the government was owing many workers four months arrears of salaries and leave grants. The worst hit are local government workers who have not been paid for about seven months. Meanwhile, the NLC has directed its state chapters to furnish it with actual state of affairs in connection with the salary arrears. Noting that it was criminal for any government to owe workers their salaries, the NLC said it would take a firm decision in a couple of days on the issue. The General Secretary of the congress, Mr. Peter Ozo-Eson, stated this in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents in Ilorin on Monday. He said, “We have not taken a firm decision on what to do until we get actual information on which state, what is owed, how many months and the actual amount from all the state councils. We hope that within a couple of days, these reports would have got to us and we would take a firm position on them. “We would rely on the reports that we get from our state chapters. We are asking our state to advise us on salary payments and if there are debts. Based on that we are going to collate take appropriate actions in relation to getting those salaries paid. “We condemn any state government that is owing arrears of salaries because the workers must be the first to be paid before they start spending on any other issue.” Ozo-Eson said it was worrisome that even the Federal Government was owing some categories of its workers for about three months. He lamented that some state chapters of the NLC did not give the national body a report on time that their members were being owed. He stated that payment of workers’ salaries should be made a priority. The NLC secretary said, “For us, it is criminal for any government not to pay workers’ salaries, accumulate them over months while the governors and other political office holders take their own salaries. Such is criminal. We are also aware that even the Federal Government is owing some categories of civil servants their salaries for over three months. “This is extremely unacceptable. Whatever is the reason for that! In the case of the Federal Government, they try to explain it in terms of problems with migration to IPPIS system. We think whatever is the logic, those salaries and arrears need to be paid immediately. “On state governments that are owing, unfortunately some of the NLC chapters did not bring it to our notice early enough for us to know that salaries are owed. If you owe a worker salary for a month, you have no moral obligation to expect workers to come and render any service. “So to hear that there are states and large number of them that are owing workers for two or three months is completely unacceptable.” http://www.punchng.com/news/fg-owes-70000-workers-three-month-salaries/ |
The Minister of Police Affairs, Jelili Adesiyan, on Monday, said a plot by former President Olusegun Obasanjo and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) to form an interim government has been uncovered. The minister said this in Lagos at the launch of a book titled, ‘Watch the Watcher,’ written by an activist, Yinka Odumakin, in reaction to Obasanjo’s controversial book, ‘My Watch’. Adesiyan said he had already directed the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba; and the Department of State Service to arrest anybody that made inflammatory statements ahead of the 2015 elections. He said, “Many of those in the APC are disgruntled PDP members who are no longer relevant and because they could not have their way, they have started to heat up the polity. They have said they will form a parallel government if they lose. “I have already told the IG and the DSS to arrest anybody making such mutinous and inflammatory statements.” Adesiyan said his suspicion was fuelled by a threat by the Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, that the APC would form a parallel government if the 2015 general elections were rigged. He added, “Obasanjo is already planning to install an interim government with Buhari. But we will vote and we will work with whoever wins the election.” Adesiyan, who was detained in 2003 for the murder of the Minister of Justice, Chief Bola Ige, said the former President was vindictive and was fighting Jonathan because he (Jonathan) had refused to be used by him. The minister, who was later freed over Ige’s murder, said Obasanjo picked Jonathan as the late President Umaru Yar’Adua’s running mate because he felt he could control him but his plans backfired. The minister said, “He picked a President that was sick and while we were campaigning for the President, he (Yar’Adua) was always in Germany receiving treatment. While many were lobbying for the VP slot, Obasanjo picked a gentleman, Goodluck Jonathan, who had no strong political base so that he could control him. “Unfortunately for Obasanjo, God had a better plan and Jonathan refused to be used. Obasanjo, being the man that he is, has now teamed up with Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar to snatch power but Tinubu will outsmart him because we Osun people are smart. Ask Tinubu, he is my brother, from my state. He is from Iragbiji while I am from Ode-Omu.” The Director of Communications, Buhari Campaign Organisations, Dele Alake, said it was silly for anyone to say that Buhari was plotting the emergence of an interim government when Buhari was also participating in the presidential election. He said, “It must have dawned on Nigerians that the PDP don’t have any answer to the multifarious problems plaguing Nigeria and that is why they have resorted to mudslinging and character assassination. “If Buhari was planning an interim government, why would he be running for President in the first place? I think sanity has taken leave from them. “Buhari remains the only viable solution to the quagmire that Nigeria has fallen into and it will take a disciplined person like Buhari to straighten things out.” When contacted, a source close to Obasanjo, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said it was only the ex-president that could react to the allegation. The source told our correspondent on the telephone, “It is only Baba that can react to the matter.” http://www.punchng.com/news/obasanjo-buhari-planning-interim-govt-fg/ |

what many of us aren't getting is this. If you meet a lady with those good qualities you want, sex will be the last thing on your mind. How many ladies have these qualities? The OP must have observed a fall in the standard of a good wife material before he asked the question. What do I stand to gain from a girl who can't cook, wash, and help me while at work and she'll still expect me to pay bills. is that not like I'm throwing away my money? If you meet a good girl, a really good one. The only thing on your mind will be to marry her. |
jsunex:good point, but in the good old days, you stand a lot to gain because girls were brought up well to do many things for a guy. so, it was easy dating them and gaining a lot: from cooking good food (not maggi and all those diabetes-causing, cancer-causing gibberish called food o), washing clothes etc. Now, before the ladies start abusing me and asking if they are slaves, men in those days cater for the needs and the women to help their men. In this era of whatsapp, Facebook, Skype, bbm, Et al, I can boldly say that the standard has fallen. Our African women became ladies (according to Fela Kuti ). They don't know how to cook, wash, embrace men's family members and friends respectfully. They insult a lot, hiss a lot, always online(instead of learning from mummies how they persevered and made their marriages work, and learn how to do chores), abuse their parents. They are few exceptions though. What then will I be doing with such a lady except to knack her kpekus? |
