In legal parlance there is what is called plea bargaining. When you realise that you do not have a good case, you opt for plea bargaining, e.g plead guilty for lesser sentencing, rather than allow full trial that may result in heavy penalty. FG under GEJ took this option, but our "oversabi" APC leadrrs, thought otherwise. Now they are looking for who to blame. I have read some funny comments like, "sieze British and Irish assets".
