Culture / Words From The Epie Language Of Yenagoa. by Sinistami(m): 11:28pm On Nov 27, 2018
This is my Second thread after that pidgin Battle thread that Hit FP. Damn I loved that Thread but this night its not about Pidgin again. Today I'll be trying my Best to save my Maternal Tribe's language called Epie-Attisa. spoken Predominantly in Yenagoa the Capital city of Bayelsa State. And the Fourth major language in Bayelsa After Izon ,Nembe and Ogbia. Epie is an Delta Edoid language normally spoken by The Natives of Yenagoa who have a myth of Migrating from Benin. But that is Changing as most young folks from 30 to 1 year olds can't speak the Language because of the Nativization and Creolization of English and Pidgin especially in the Niger delta. So tonight I'll try my best to preserve this languages by storing its words and Sayings here on Nairaland plus Translations.

In no particular Order.

What is "Niger Delta" Anyway..... Wetin concern Uyo man with Warri man?
Totally meaningless. The Western Niger Delta has always had more to do with the Yoruboids and Edoids, while the Eastern Niger Delta has always had more to do with the Igbos.

That is just the PURE fact.

To start with why can’t you stay in the hostel(M2) for your first year so that you can get to know the place know and the culture of the environment then in your second year you can get yourself accommodation outside and believe me you will spend less in the hostel but you are not allow to cook, whatever ways you chose you will enjoy the environment and the school generally so just relax your mind.

I applied late for Hostel no more accommodation.

I heard the ban of bike reduced crime rate drastically. Election is around the corner, please stay out of politics because they don't joke with it.

Things are always expensive in capital city but believe me, you will find your way around it.

Almost 40 minutes drive will be just 100 naira, so you can actually go to another local government and get things cheap

OK Thanks Bross

I am currently around Uyo. You have nothing to be afraid of. Accommodation is on the high side in Uyo which is peculiar to all state capital. (120k to 200k)

If you don't fancy personal space, you can share rent with another student. Your school is located around plaza which is the main city shopping centre.

You will surely be amaze with the transport system here, it is very cheap and fast. Six different routes may lead to your destination.

Feel free to ask any question

Thanks I'm From Yenagoa Bayelsa Born and Bred
Although I stayed in Uyo only for Few days I noticed things were quite expensive and Crime rate was very low. Can you Confirm that?

As an Ijaw from Bayelsa they're lots of Beliefs but lemme say a few .

You don't take a New Born Baby to a forest. The Forest will still its Face and give it a different face. .

You don't about somebody's name in the Forest. Spirits might steal the Name.

You don't flog a child with a Broom.

If you hear your name in a quite place like a forest you don't answer until you're sure its not death calling you.

You don't go to the Forest when a close family member or a town person dies.( I've done this lots of times but on a particular day we heard cries in the Forest.

You are knocking yourself out, seriously.
You started it yourself, by making a list of ethnic groups that ARE NOT the same but share close kinship, and then are getting confused over same issue. The strongest links itsekiris have with any other ethnic group are with Yorubas.
Is Epie Urhobo?

Thank you o. Epie is more farther apart from Urhobo than Itshekiri from Yoruba. other than that I my self still think Itshekiri isn't Yoruba because language isn't the only thing to define an ethnic group. They entire culture and Traditions and worldview is very different from Yoruba and Closer to Its Neighbours Urhobos Ijaw and Edo etc.

Also if the oba of that time during the Benin kingdom days had allowed all the ethnic groups that migrated from Benin to speak Bini, a lot of the ethnic groups in south south like delta Bayelsa and part of rivers would have been Edo today. So we all would have been the same ethnic group speaking the same language.
The Yorubas of today only were not one monolithic group until the British created Nigeria. Before colonization they were just Yoruba speaking peoples. When Nigeria came about all the Yoruba speaking peoples became Yoruba. And some Yorubas in Ondo and Ekiti May have migrated from Benin and inter married with the Yorubas there.
So we are all inter connected. Even Anioma are a blend of Igbo and Edo, with some Anioma groups being more Igbo, and other Anioma groups being more Edo. Some Ibibio Efiks also have a strong connection with Igbos. Some are mixed with Igbos. We are all one of the same. One Nigeria
One love to Nigeria

Finally Someone that gets it. we're all one. love your write up

Thanks. Oh wow nice, we’re all related and connected. We’re all one. It’s nice that we’re brothers. Do Ijaws in Rivers come from Benin to?

Ijaws in Rivers are another ball game o lots of them are mixed with Igbo's especially folks from Opobo and Ibani but the Kalabari too have myths of coming from Benin along with the Engenne of Rivers too as I've mentioned above the ijaws are really something further west you'll find some clans so Yorubanised that if they tell you they are Ijaws you might slap them for lying at Rivers you'll see Igbonised ones like the Opobo Ibani clans and even within Bayelsa that they say is a pure Ijaw state you'll still find some clans speaking Edoid languages as they mother tongue. That's why I always urge for Southern Unity nobody can come and tell me that none of the tribes in Nigeria have had any connection before 1914 Amalgamation anybody that reason like that is just deceiving himself and very dillusional. We're all One o One love. If you notice most Tribes in Southern Nigeria have a connection to Benin City especially Minority Tribes so we should try to live as one. One Love

Nice, cool. So are most Ijaws in Bayelsa originally from Benin? Do most Ijaws in Bayelsa and Delta originate from Benin or just half of them.
I always like learning more of Nigerian culture.
I grew up abroad

You grew up abroad!? cool! Not all some clans claim to be from the Water some from the Sky which to me is absurd some claim Ile-Ife in Yoruba land others claim ancient Egypt. Although most clans in Bayelsa and Delta Especially claim Benin only Epie-Attisa and Engenne speak Edoid languages.

Your from Epie Atissa right? Is most of Bayelsa Epie Atissa or just Yenagoua?

Nope just Yenagoa. let's just say we are a minority in a minority. And am maternally from there my dad is from Zarama an Engenne speaking town in the northern part of Yenagoa L.G.A bothering Rivers State although the two groups understand each other to an extent because of their Edoid language and roots to ancient Benin. Both languages are mutually unintelligible to each other.

Hey my brother. I’ve noticed that since 2017 there’s been a sudden hate towards Edo here. It wasnt like that before 2017. It may seem like paranoia but it’s true. On any page or thread where there is a notable Edo figure like a celebrity or an athlete
Or politician, people start shouting insults and saying all kinds of abhorrent things. They don’t do that to any other group. And the mods are fueling this by posting mainly negative stuff about the state.
If it’s a thread about a Yoruba or Igbo celebrity people will be praising the person. If it’s Edo, they’ll be saying stuff like “is this news”? Why is it on here? “I don’t like their outfit? “The person in olosho”
Nigeria is being divided anyhow by the whites and their Nigerian stooges causing hate everywhere

Anyway Sha am not an Enemy o I was saying my point of view. dont take it personal. One love My Brother.

I pray that God protects him and brings him home safely. God please bless him and his family

But people go missing throughout Nigeria, it’s only when it happens in Edo that they want to put it front page. Boko Haram is kidnapping people here and there, why is that not front page.

These tribalistic sell out mods just want to smear Edo State as much as they can.
A disproportionate amount of negative news about Edo makes front page. One would think Edo is just as big as Lagos with the amount of negative news the sellout mods put in front page.

In Ondo one woman bit of her landlords lips, but was that front page? No! No it wasn’t!
People that go missing everywhere in the world is what makes front page.

Just so they have something negative to say about Edo. These people and their agendas to spread hate and division in Nigeria

I don't care about the Post or whatever all what I know is that I've noticed you always have a deep Paranoia when it comes to Edo people as if they're the most Victimized ethnic in Nigeria. Lemme just say this they have been no minority ethnic group in Nigeria that doesn't suffer this especially from the Nigerdelta. you don't notice that when news about cultism or Millitancy n either Bayelsa or Rivers State comes it always hits Front page for a while I even thought Street Cultism only occurred in the South only when I saw it in Abeokuta Ogun. or when news about violence in warri comes it hits Front page. So please stop making it as if its only about Edo the way I see it even Ijaw is more victimized than you. at least you guys get praised for your ancient culture and art So chill Abeg.

what of benin and yenagoa, these are monotribal cities

I don't know much about Benin but I do know that the Ijaws don't Speak One language they speak 9 closely related languages that are mutually unintelligible eg the languages spoken in Yenagoa are Epie an Edoid language which is the main language of the Ijaw subgroup Epie-Attisa who owns main town Yenagoa then Izon the most widely spoken Ijaw language and the purest, Engenne an other Edoid language spoken in Yenagoa L.G.A but still mutually unintelligible to Epie, then Buseni and Okodia spoken at Yenagoa North. they are also lots of migrants both from the State and outside of the state like the Ogbia Ijaws who speak a cross river language called Ogbia and then the Nembe Ijaws who speak a very deep form of Izon which is quite unintelligible to Normal Izon Speakers I won't forget the Urhobo and Isoko of Sagbama and else where who have a community called Isoko Bayelsa in North of Yenagoa L.G.A, and the Ekpeye who also reside in Ogbia L.G.A and speak an Igboid language. plus other migrant from other States Yenagoa as small as it is is very Cosmopolitan for it's Size. so it won't come off as a surprise to me.

Make I Decode am. Yenagoa boy like me if I no Decode wetin I gain?
Man Their is Problem. Word on the Street is Police came to our Neighborhood to catch criminals with long Crime track to take to jail. When boys in the Neighborhood caught word of it they started fleeing. The police seeing that started bringing out their guns to Shoot. a stray Bullet touched a girls leg and right now she's at the General Hospital. Because of the Happenings we couldn't go enjoy the Night at Bro Osas'es place. police started taking people for questioning but I didn't say a word

That's exactly my Dream because people are taking advantage of our Diversity and language barrier against us. Since most of them run the Government and are the Majority they would always bring that bullshit that Pidgin is a Bastardized foreign language so it can't be standardized and made into a National language. No language came out of Thin air they were all born from older languages like French Italian Spanish Portuguese that evolved from Vulgar Latin the pidgin form of Latin. or English that started of as a pidgin much like ours from German Latin French Greek Etc. They would say its not an Indigenous language but if it was coined by our Ancestors in this same land then I don't see how its less indigenous from Igbo Ijaw Yoruba Urhobo? Inshort since the Igbos keep saying their are Jews that they language is related to Hebrew or the Yoruba to Arab. then its all even na!
