I was at the store recently and picked up some Agege-styled bread. What caught my eye wasn't just the softness, but a clear 'Best Before' date printed on the packaging. It seems this is the standard in the Western world, and it got me thinking about our bread industry back home in Nigeria. My Questions for the House: 1. Safety vs. Tradition: Most of us buy bread in nylon bags without any reliable info. We rely on "pressing" the bread to check for freshness. Isn't it time we moved past this and demanded proper labeling? 2. The "Chemical" Factor: Do you think some bakers avoid dates because they use preservatives to keep the bread soft for weeks? A date would force them to be more honest about their ingredients. 3. NAFDAC's Role: Why is it that many of our local staples get away without these basic consumer protections? I know our "street" bread is legendary, but shouldn't we be evolving? Or do you think adding dates will just increase the price of a loaf for no reason? Let’s discuss. Have you ever bought bread in Nigeria that actually had an expiry date? Or are we just "living by faith" with our breakfast?

Ever been mid-flight, cruising smoothly, when suddenly the plane starts to shake? That unexpected bump is called turbulence, and while it can feel unsettling, here’s what’s really happening behind the scenes. What Causes Turbulence? Jet Streams: High-speed rivers of air that planes cross. Mountains: They create invisible “waves” in the atmosphere. Weather Systems: Storms and temperature shifts stir the skies. Clear Air Turbulence: The sneaky kind—no clouds, no warning! Do All Planes Handle It the Same? Not exactly: Small Regional Jets: Light and agile, but they feel bumps more. Large Airliners: Heavier and more stable, so turbulence feels softer. Modern Tech: Sensors and autopilot help pilots smooth the ride. Aircraft are built tough—far tougher than turbulence can challenge. Pilots train for this every day. The God Factor Despite all our tech and planning, turbulence reminds us of something bigger. It’s a humbling moment—a gentle nudge that we’re not in full control. Many travellers find peace in prayer or reflection during these times. Faith and engineering together keep us safe. Passenger Tips Buckle up when seated. Avoid moving around during bumps. Stay calm—turbulence is normal and temporary. Next time you hit a rough patch mid-flight, remember: it’s science, engineering, and a little bit of faith working together to get you home safely. |
The post was simply out of curiosity, seeking to understand various perspectives on the subject. eepeepook: |
Every December, it feels like the entire country is on the move. Airports are jam-packed, bus stations buzzing, and Nigerians from Lagos to London, Abuja to Atlanta all heading home for the ultimate festive reunion. The vibe? Pure December madness! But here’s the real question: is it worth all the hype? On one hand, nothing beats that first hug from family, the smell of smoky jollof wafting through the house, and the festive chaos that only Naija can deliver. Street parties, music blasting, laughter echoing through the neighbourhood—it’s the ultimate homecoming vibe. These moments? Absolutely priceless. They’re the stuff memories are made of, and for many, it’s the highlight of the year. But let’s keep it real—the struggle is real too. Tickets are ridiculously expensive, traffic will test your patience (and your sanity), and then there’s the pressure to “show up” like you’ve been living in a music video. Add the stress of packing, flight delays, and logistics, and suddenly Netflix with pepper soup sounds like a solid plan. Is the joy of reconnecting worth the cost and chaos? Or is it time to redefine what “celebrating at home” really means? So, what’s your move? Boarding that flight or chilling where you are? Drop your thoughts—because this debate is hotter than fresh suya and twice as spicy! 🔥

Great point raised by the poster about the downsides of paving entire compounds! While it might look neat and low-maintenance, it’s not doing the environment any favours. When there’s no soil left, rainwater has nowhere to go except straight into drains and streets, which can lead to flooding even after a light shower. Plus, we’re losing the natural process that refills underground water. Over time, that means lower water tables and more water scarcity—something we definitely don’t want. Keeping some green space isn’t just pretty; it helps absorb water, cool the area, and even supports local biodiversity. If you’re planning upgrades, think about mixing paving with gardens or permeable surfaces. It’s a win for you and the planet! |
I appreciate your estimates, however, I believe the grocery budget may require some revision. It seems unlikely that a family of five would spend CAD 1,800 per month on groceries. I suggest a maximum budget of CAD 500, although even that amount may be considered generous. Predator188: |
"POF is not an issue" as in you have evidence to demonstrate your ability to pay for the program, or do you actually have the necessary funds? If you genuinely have the funds, why not proceed and pay for at least the first year upfront to enhance your chances of application approval? As a word of caution, please ensure you thoroughly understand the refund policy of the institution you intend to study at. Remember, study permit applications are not solely determined by POF or the amount an applicant possesses. kasie1: |
Excuse me, could you please explain how you calculated the monthly expenses of CAD 3,500 for a family of five? Predator188: |
Please be guided if you plan to submit your study permit application between now and March 31. IRCC has introduced some changes regarding studying in Canada. Tomoarika:I think you should state it and back it up with a strong SOP. I personally know of one that hadn't finished his MBA when he was submitting his application. He declared the in-progress MBA in his application, backed it up with some strong SOP, and eventually got his SP approved....to the glory of God. |
GODISGREAT01:You do not need a transit visa through Casablanca. |
Mamaoseme33:Absolutely not! What suspicion are we even talking about here? |
Heffalump:While I do not have the details of your wife's study permit, your 10yrs old will still be able to attend school regardless of if he/she goes on visitor record or study permit. My own opinion will be for you three to apply for visitor record. |
spacevice:I think Applied Degree should be it. Not sure though. |
ekeson45:You don't have to fill the form nor upload anything there, as long as you wouldn't be authorizing IRCC to release/share your information with anyone. |
freshStarz:These are colleges, and not universities. Yes, they both offer PGWP eligible programs in some of their campuses. Please check the link for better guidance. https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/study-permit/prepare/designated-learning-institutions-list.html#wb-auto-30 |
National Bureau of Statistics recently annouced Nigeria's unemployment rate to be 4.1% in Q1 2023 ( from a previous thread). Nigeria's labour force currently stands at 73million, which means about 3 million employable people are out of jobs. This translates to 1 out of every 24 employable persons is without a job. Do you think this new rate is accurate by simply surveying your immediate environment? |
The economy is not looking good for most Nigerians right now. So I was just thinking, what if the Federal Government, or whatever authority that has the power, allows pensioners, both active and retired, a one time 25% unconditional withdrawal of their pension contribution balance as at today? This will help many families meet their immediate needs. Is there any palliative that could be better than this? After all, it's been the contributors' money over the years. On the flip side, and this is to our economists, will there be any serious negative impacts on the economy should people have general access to this fund? |
Thank you Bullstriker. That was quite handy. I'll welcome other ideas, especially the recent ones. bullstriker: |
Could a recent traveller please help with the list of items, foods especially, that are allowed onto the flights and into Canada. I'll particularly like to know how these items were packed and presented. Wakanow was telling me I'll require PCR test if I'd be flying on KLM. Is the same with other airlines? Which airlines don't require the test? Thank you |
Information on eTA validity and number are not on the Letter of Introduction. I hope this is cool.

My concern is that majority of the ones I'm seeing are transiting through US. AkeemTy: |
Please help. I need flight suggestions to Toronto. |
Alternatively, please how could one track passport submission to VFS Abuja? |
Really? Just to confirm they had received it? Or could it be that some processing would have been ongoing on the passport before the conformation mail? Teezkid: |
Good evening, Please how soon is one supposed to receive a confirmation mail from VFS once the passport is delivered to them by DHL? |
Two things please: 1. Kindly share the vfs customer care number 2. Did you say the customer care said payment can't be done from one's phone bank app? HouseRavenclaw: |
CharitoJames:The ones I'm seeing for these Airlines are transiting through USA. I don't have US visa |
Congratulations to all PPR recipients, and speedy approval to all hopefuls. Please what are the airlines I could booked with to Toronto Pearson airport that wouldn't require transit visa. Majority of the flights I'm seeing plan to transit through USA. |
