kosovo: To say that IBB alone is the major problem of Nigeria, is to say that you have been living under the rocks, Every political leader in Nigeria have constituted a fraction to the Nigeria problems, giving the processus of the Nigeria Nation it'd be bad to designate all the problems associated with underdevelopment on our leaders alone . . . .
Tribalism alone can subruo subruti subrutum our Nation, it is the greatest cause of our numerous problems, if we want to nfligo inflixi inflictum good governance, we must obliterate tribalism. Tribalism is all that has become of Nigeria and all that will become of Nigeria . . .
When an Igbo man can contest and win an election in kano state, when a Bini man can contest and win an election in Lagos state, only then can we be serious and/or gravis about Developing the Nation. . . Go down with history on Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California, Talking that as a case study on the Nigeria's tribalistic and ethnocentric discombobulation. . . you will Find out that if we can completely pulverize tribalism and all the issues associated with it, Our leaders wouldn't need much work to develop the nation in a matter of rapidity. . . How sad that people who are supposed to be "enlightened" can come up with all this condescending jargon. What did IBB do to address all these issues he now seems able to see and analyse? Ability to "analyse issues" or give "politcal commentary" is not a measure of leadership potential. Just because I can write a verbose essay on why your shirt is dirty and the possible implications of such does not mean I know how to wash clothes or make your shirt clean. The tendency to fall for all the "insightful comments" and grammar the general spews these days (whether true or not) is very laughable indeed. Why haven't you asked the general what he did to address these problems he now sees when he was in power, or was he conveniently oblivious to them then? Are these new problems? Spare us your patronising lectures, they are embarassing. |

I think we need to get serious. If we were a serious country may be our gowns would have been a symbol of achievements, but right now those gowns are a symbol of our unique corruption and lacklustre attitude to everything.
Some of them even look like Pyjamas and betrays a leader who would rather be sleeping than leading. I would reply with the same response since I think it is completely relevant to the shaky justifications you are attempting to use. Sky Blue: Are you listening to yourself? mikeansy: I think previous commentaries recognised that Yar'adua and OBJ wear also wearing sectional cultural gowns and they are part of the criticisms. And some people would probably criticise the leaders if they wore a suit; imagine some market women trying to relate to such a figure as opposed to someone dressed in something they are more familiar with. So why make this an issue? |

I'd rather we dress like oyibo and be known for honesty and integrity than wear 'danciki' while squandering our children's future through corruption.

mikeansy: cicero check out how Presidential he would have looked.
It is truly a missed opportunity. And by the way it is not politically smart for a President of ethnic minority origin to be promoting the very tribal card that has made politics of Nigeria a game only a certain people can win. Why am I not surprised that you posted a picture of him in a tailor made suit as a good representation for suits? Instead of telling the man to go and get better fitting traditional regalia that would accent his body type more. People wearing different clothes is not a tribal card, the fact that it is to you does not mean everybody sees it that way so enough with that poor excuse. Nigeria has a budding fashion industry geared towards as you put it "cultural attire". The indian prime minister did not wear a suit. It is just a shame that you have attached your sense of national identity and looking smart to wearing a suit. When OBJ wore his "cultural attire" he looked smart. I just saw a video of Nuhu Ribadu giving a speech in a traditional hausa attire and thought he looked very smart (even more so than many in the room who wore suits). That you may think wearing a suit is the only way of looking smart and presentable does not mean everyone shares such a view. That you attach tribal sentiment to Jonathan wearing what he wore does not mean everybody does. |
Politics › Re: I Won’t Force Myself To Meet Yar’adua, Says Jonathan ! by SkyBlue1: 2:51pm On Apr 14, 2010 |
mikeansy: But he is the President of Nigeria not his ethnic group
the same goes for Yar'adua and all others.
No one cultural attire represents all Nigerians, so the most general attire for all is suits.
It will reflect unity more, than a head of state projecting the culture of just one ethnic group.
By the way for your info, Suits are nobody's culture. Jacob Zuma was in suits at that conference, I don't suppose the zulus dont have a culture.
We make noise about unity of Nigeria everyday and spend the rest of our lives celebrating our disunity. The head of state should represent all Nigerians in symbol and gestures not just one ethnic group. Genuinely no offense intended, but the statement in bold is trite (my opinion). Unity is not about all being the same, it is more about sharing common goals and allowing individual strengths to flourish (as opposed to stifling them) in pursuit of such goals, than it is about what the person is wearing. I mean, are people really that insecure? The fact that no one cultural attire represents all Nigerians does not mean we completely abandon what many can relate to as been Nigerian/African dressing, just to maintain this "unity". If the unity of the country depended on such trivial stuff like this then perhaps all hope really is lost. While no one cultural attire represents Nigeria as a whole, his dressing style has become synonymous with his ethnic group, a people that are part of Nigeria and hence Nigerians. Suits are a typically western attire so please enough with your attempts to reconcile your ideals with the reality. I mean, what is the average temperature in Nigeria to begin with? If Jonathan decides to wear suits of his own accord, then fine; if he decides to go for something more comfortable and more intune with his culture (which by extension is Nigerian culture since the Ijaws are Nigerians), then so be it. Making such trivialities issues and backing them up with disingenious arguements is just not necessary. When he wears a kimono to a gathering of world leaders, then you can make noise. |

Do you know the history behind Bolar Harts and most other Nigerian attires?
Bolar Hats are not Nigerian by origin, they were some of the items given by white men to warrant chiefs in other to aqcuire slaves from Nigeria. So when folks talk about what is Nigerian and what is'nt try to understand the history behind these things.
This story is also same for so many other attires won in Nigeria.
The textile industry did not start from Nigeria. If we truly want to reflect the cultures of our forefathers we will be dressing in leaves. And suits were inherent from the start in "American society"? There is no need for a history lesson because such is not relevant here, what is relevant though is that for whatever history or reason, the people from his ethnic group see that as there official attire. So enough please, or do you want to go there and define what they should or should not wear? A tad arrogant, no? P.S. I don't know the "we" you refer to in your last statement considering Nigeria contains over 200 different ethnic groups, many with different history, traditions, cultures, etc. So when did Europeans start wearing suits? Or was it just there from the start with them? Did the anglo saxons, or romans, or greek wear suit? |

The man seems smart, let him look smart too. What part of the country is Jonathan from? Have you seen the way they dress? If you are not familiar with what is seen as "official regalia" (for lack of a better phrase) in his ethnic group then why not just go do some basic research? Wether or not he looks smart is subjective, I for one think he does and better yet, he is wearing something that showcases some Nigerian culture. With regards to the part in bold, what on earth has that got to do with anything? How many materials in aso rock are of Nigerian origin? And in most cases, there is always a court approval backing such things up, in this case it might be interpreted as an abuse of power.
The acting President tells a private citizen "don't travel unless you get permission from me"!. . . for what? the Acting President isn't his daddy!
If you will agree with me, most post here is being subjective based on people's personal judgement that the dude is corrupt, and yet not even a single charge has been filed against him.
Don't get me wrong, i also share such opinions about him being corrupt, but we cannot neglect the fact that such restriction of movement can be categorically described as an abuse of his personal rights.
If you want to restrict someone's movement, then do so using appropriate legal channels, what if its not Aondoakaa, let's say it is someone like Wole Soyinka or even you, would you still hold on to this theory?
We are not in a military regime, this is democratic government! You are right, we are in a democracy and getting a court order is the ideal, however, considering the notorious wait times Nigerian courts are known for I will say this is a more pragmatic approach to take. The dude has been sacked, the government has no right to restrict his movement, it is against everything democracy stands for.
On what basis or jurisdiction is the Acting President Jonathan restricting the movement of a fellow citizen?
THE LAW SAYS INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY
from all indications, folks here are merely talking based on sentiments and personal opinions on who is good and who is not.
If he has charges to answer, let the Police arrest and charge him to court which in turn has the jurisdiction to restrict his movement, Jonathan is not a court It is not uncommon for the movement of people under investigation to be restricted, in fact, it is almost standard practise especially when there is significant flight risk. No need for all of us to blow uneccessary grammar here, if a man under investigation is restricted from leaving the country and such is seen as draconian, what about those in the US who are not even allowed to leave a city due to pending investigations? |

OBJ ruled Nigeria for 8 good years assuringly that does not mean atrocities where not commited or how else do we explain the $16 billion dollars spent on the power sector but nothing to show for. But the advantages of his regime outways the dis-advantages, that is assurance.
Stability - With Assurance firmly on the ground comes stability and growth. It does not mean corruption would not happen. Jerry Rawlings was actually the first civilian President of Ghana his role was that of assurance and stabilty. He ruled for 2 terms of 4 years each. The president is gettin beta but not fit for d ofc yet, and 4 evrybody callin 4 his sack by claimin him incapacitated, the truth is dat no doc will declare a man who is sic lik Yaradua as permanently incapacitated. Permanently incapacitated means dat d man can neva regain his health to take on his duties, but the President is only temporary incapacitated and temporary cld mean as long as 3yrs but he is xpected to recover, den @ dat point d decision 2 resign rests squarely on him, we can force a man to throw in the towel.
I'm a staunch suporta of empowerin Jonathan as Ag President nd if by 2011 Yaradua can't continue Jonathan shld be allowed to run 4 president, but like I hav always said Jonathan didn't require a leta frm Yaradua for him 2 act neither did he nid d NASS 2 empower him, by virtue of our constitution Jonathan bcoms d Ag President d moment Yaradua is out of town. And actin president is not a new title higher dan d vice president, I giv an xample if d president was leavin town 4 a wk he cld ask Jonathan to act on his behalf nd cld well spel out wat Jonathan can do while he is away lik chair d FEC 4 me attend 2 som visitors 4 me, but postpone d security meetin till I com back, I will personally attend to d council of state meetin, so in dis case wen d FEC comes up the VP takes charge but wen d security meetin comes up the VP postpones and wen d council of state comes up nd d man is not back d VP also postpones. Now comin 2 d issue of Nov 23 d president was rushed out nd Jonathan said d president by word of mouth asked him 2 take charge and had directed his private second to forward 2 him all necesary docs dat needed his attention, but unfortunately some ministas didn't want Jonathan 2 act by just word of mouth and dis is because it is Nigeria, and mayb democracy dats y som ministas felt they were stronga dan d VP nd Jonathan decided not to overheat d polity but instead played along so dat evryone wld kno who indeed has d powers, that was y he refused to do d ministas bidding because som pple wanted 2 tell d VP wat he shld do in d name of d president. We then had 2 go d whole hog got a NASS declaration and dat was y Jonathan had 2 move against some of d ministas.
If Yaradua gets well and returns to ofc Jonathan has nothin 2 fear and Yaradua will not find any wrongdoin wit Jonathan, rememba wen Yaradua left d country some time ago and it was rumored dat he was dead and Kingibe d SGF @ dat tyme felt he was more relevant dan d VP and took unilateral decision and didnot defer 2 d VP and already proclaimin dat he wld b d one to finish Yaraduas tenure among other things he did then, when d president returned Kingibe got his sack even d VP wasn't there wen it hapened, d first oficial event Yaradua went was where he introduced Yayale den defence minista as d SGF, his aides felt he was still sick dat was wen he demanded d resignation of Kingibe. Yaradua may not agree with all d new ministas but as president he can still reshufle d cabinet, drop som ministas and reappoint som odas or go d whole hog nd dissolve d cabinet even if its just a wk he has left.
I still honestly pray he gets well soon return to his ofc and b strong enuf to lead and go ahead 2 contest 2011 for a 2nd term and then Jonathan can continue as President frm 2015 but if Yaradua isn't strong enuf to rule let Jonathan continue wit their 7point agenda. I rest my case. Just genuinely wonder whether you read what you type. With regards to the parts in bold; is Yar Adua "out of town"? You say Yar Adua handed over to Johnathan verbally? Please give us some proof, show a news report/article from different sources or stop feeding people more trite. |
Sky Blue, You keep referring to the post wherin you asked for Yar'Adua's signature to confirm that he recognized GJ as acting President. This is disingenuous of you since we all know that a signed statement was not issued. Yar'Adua did not need to give GJ presidential powers anyway. None of these should prevent you from showing some compassion.
Oh please, really, don't start with this again. You passionately claimed that Yar Adua had handed powers over to Johnathan, I asked you to prove it and you couldn't! The fact that you were so quick to take such a position without any evidence might say more about you than you think. Since when did demanding for an end to all the lies, deceit, and cover up that seems to be going on become equal to wishing Yar Adua dead? Since when did preferring what appears to be a more capable leader (when compared to Yar Adua) leading the country become equal to wishing Yar Adua ill? Since when did Nigerians yearning for good governance become tantamount to hating Yar Adua as a person? So we should all close our eyes to the fact that the nation has been retrogressing since Yar Adua was in power simply because he is sick? The fact that you seem to believe the Imams actually saw the president might not be so shocking after all, considering you were quick to believe Yar Adua handed power over to Johnathan, without even seeing any evidence (an perhaps worse, without even asking for any) |
