Good news!! This could be your holiday destination out of this world in the near future. Read on. Astronomers have discovered that the closest Sun-like star, Tau Ceti, is orbited by five planets, one of which is in the “habitable range”. If its existence is confirmed, the planet could be the closest potentially life-harboring world to our own. Tau Ceti, twelve light years away, belongs to the same G-type yellow main-sequence class as our sun, which is relatively rare – only one in 25 stars has the same properties. Its planets were detected not by direct observation, but by calculating the slight gravitational tug these as-yet-unseen planets exert on the orbit of their star. Previously, these star ‘wobbles’ could not be clearly separated due to a multitude of other factors, but scientists at several universities in the UK and the US, say they have cleared the 'noise' with sophisticated new techniques and have found five planets. "This discovery is in keeping with our emerging view that virtually every star has planets, and that the galaxy must have many such potentially habitable Earth-sized planets. They are everywhere, even right next door," said a statement from Steve Vogt, of the University of California, Santa Cruz, who is the co-author of the discovery, due to be published by the reputable journal Astronomy and Astrophysics. One of the planets, tentatively designated HD 10700e, appears to be in the so-called “Goldilocks zone”, the relatively small corridor where temperatures are just right for water to remain liquid, and for life to possibly flourish. It is two to six times the size of the Earth, weighs five times as much, and orbits its sun every 168 days. Tau Ceti is three times as far away as the closest star system to our sun, Alpha Centauri. Earlier this year, astronomers confirmed that Alpha Centauri contains a planet, but with a temperature of 1,200 degrees Celsius it is unlikely to host life. Yet it is too early to believe that HD 10700e is an Earth-like paradise, waiting for us to arrive. It is not clear what it is made of, and what gases its atmosphere contains. Some scientists remain to be convinced it exists at all. "They're really digging deep into the noise here," Sara Seager, an astronomer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, told Science magazine, referring to the techniques used by the scientists. "The astronomical community is going to find it hard to accept planet discoveries from signals so deeply embedded in noise." The astronomers behind the project themselves say the discovery may take as long as ten years to confirm, and insist they published the findings to attract others to studying Tau Ceti. But the existence of HD 10700e should be relatively easy to confirm, compared to other potential planet candidates. "Tau Ceti is one of our nearest cosmic neighbours and so bright that we may be able to study the atmospheres of these planets in the not-too-distant future," James Jenkins, of the Universidad de Chile and the University of Hertfordshire, said in a statement. There are currently 854 planets confirmed by observation outside our solar system, but only a few of those could potentially support life. Source: http://rt.com/news/tau-ceti-habitable-planet-409/ |
stephenponti: Minion- Do you believe in reincarnation? The bible is not a book of historical facts. It is replete with myths allegories and mysteries. It is. Written by different authors with different views. Example: ecclesiates says there is no life after death-you would be dead longer Han you live. In one of the gospels, people do not return to earth until the last day. Also remember is an ancient book collection written thousands of years ago in Jewish and Greek cultural background. They were written for spiritual enlightenment, not as science or history. |
claremont: No, I don't believe in it. I believe the human body has an expiry date, and it expires in full when it reaches that date. I don't believe in such things like reincarnation, golden unicorn, talking snakes, burning bushes e.t.c. They are tales-by-moonlight stories.Same view as me. Firstly there is very little clarification of what reincarnated-spirit, soul , ghost. How does it transfer from body to body. Why more people on earth, not a fixed number recycling. How are we fundamentally different from animals or plants? Do they reincarnate too? Why are we more scared of a dead body than the living one? Some explanation of the reasons for claims of reincarnation are as follows; 1. Resemblances to parents or late relatives - genes, animals and plants are similar. 2. Beliefs of relatives being alive after death -dreams, misidentifications, hallucinations. 3. Belief in life after death also triggered by myths, near death experiences, people in coma experiencing weird phenomena. Our inability to accept the truth of our own fragility, our inflated self esteem that we are immortal, claims of being above all living things so we cannot just die like that etc. 4. We also use reincarnation to exploit and control others eg pastors threaten hellfire The fact remains that life finishes when we die. We are subject to the same natural laws as all living things. Our existence is extended through our children's via genes and we split these genes to multiply in new children. So our existence continues as genes in our children; that is why being childless is si so painful because one reaches an evolutionary dead end. |
OsunOriginal: Just like a pastor put it the other time - "empty hand on empty head"Gbam! Intelligent!!! But remove the tribal bit about the Igbos. Any Nigerian can be corrupt and hypocritical; GEJ is not an Igbo man |
Ileke-IdI:On point!! The bible was written as a means to exploit and control people |
DinhoMVP: Author i'm not a fan of GEJ but your post smacks of ignorance of the supremacy of GOD who is GEJ not to even postrate before the altar of the ALMIGHTY guy watch your posts o before you incure CURSE on yourself! Why does Adegboye not prostrate too? |
ademo1: @ the poster, u r a big fool. U must definately be a muslim. U people u dont see what is good in christianity. For ur infomation he was not worshiping Pastor Adeboye but God. If u make gest of him dat he prays to the Lord in public God will definately curse u, ur entire family and ur generation as he did to d wife of David in d Holy Bible which made her d only barren in d bible. I'm not suprise at ur statement, u ppl were jubilating dat a christian Governor died to b replaced by muslim Governor in Kaduna. I'll also tell u dat u people pray in d national mosque and bow down to Ordinary Imam including all former muslim head of state. God will preserve GEJ. I am from Ondo state, I wonder why u hausa play politics along religion. We vote in my state for integrity not religion. I supported Aregbesola (muslim) for Osun state gov. Regardles his religion. Once again for mocking God. I curse ur life and ur generation unless u ask for forgiveness. NonsenseYou have not shown an iota of the divinity of the Christ in you, nullifying your claim to Christianity. You in your anger forgot one of the cornerstones of divinity -forgiveness, tolerance and self control. You are not even democratic - everyone has a right to an opinion. Why did Adegboye not kneel down with the good president? Arrogance! |
dgreatsammie: The fool says in his heart that there is no God. The bible says, let the people that are called by my name humble themself....You take the bible too literally. The bible is not a book of historical facts. But myths and allegories and mysteries packaged together for spiritual enlightenment. Please read more about how the bible came to be, written by sages to establish the Jewish religion, and later on Christianity. |
wirinet: Why do nigerian Christians on nairaland pretend to be blind, dumb, blind and brain dead? The main grouse of the poster is president Jonathan kneeling and bowing before Adeboye, and not not kneeling and bowing before God.If Adegboye is servant of God why can't he kneel down with the president to pray to God? All pastors learn to be humble with your members. Kneel with them in prayer! |
Alxmyr: The bible tells about the wife of David, the king who despised David for dancing wreaklessly before the people and disgrace himself before Israelites. The king replied her and said, he (David) was dancing before GOD who made him king over Israel and prefer him over Saul, the wife's father. And the result. The wife was the only woman recorded in the bible that died barren. You made a poor example justifying your point. The bible is replete with myths and superstitious beliefs. How can expressing your opinion about your husband's wreckless and possibly alcohol influenced disgraceful public behaviours cause infertility? You have no basic knowledge of human biology. If pastor Adegboye was as humble as he presents himself, he should have knelt down with the president together with the other church embers to pray. Is pastor Adegboye now God? Why does the pastors not kneel down with the congregation to pray? Arrogance!! |
chaircover: A family have a mental unstable kid in the house and the next thing to do is to keep loaded guns in the house and in a location where the kid can get to it.It's just terrible. America would never give up their guns. I learnt some classified information indicate that was the underlying reason why the US asked for independence from Britain. British govt during America's colonial days express concerns about the excessive abuse of guns, and ordered all guns be given up. In defiance the US opted for independence, but used freedom and liberty as an excuse. Many Americans are obsessed with guns, so called wild Wild West |
kulyie: must he be taught, doesnt he watch tv and browse through d internetHe was taught to shoot by his mother Nancy, who was an avid gun collector and owned five guns. See what her stupid hobby led to. Unfortunately she is not alive to see the outcome of her foolishness. |
fellis: The kid was intelligent, he probably learned it from the internet. On point! Many of these socially isolated individuals resent how they were rejected by society and ruminate about these ideas for a time before the attack. This may lead to feelings of depression, delusions or personality crisis. Suicide becomes a major contemplation followed by thoughts of revenge against those who caused him so much pain. Outcome is a disastrous homicide-suicide. Interestingly they are not able to understand that the children they were going to kill are not the same people who rejected him in the past |
ojotule4: why e no be 485 or 357 or 458 but 500yrs gbam no more or less?Just an estimation. There s no way you can be 100 percent certain . Better say around 500yrs old |
tayoccu: It doesn't look like she and the others were sarcrificed ( from what I read native indian sarcifices were rather bloody), it looks more like they fled from something, got lost and were trying to keep warm in the cave their bodies were found.Good thinking |
pro01: These oyinbo people sef. Is it an incontrovertible fact that the body has been frozen for up to 500 years? How them dey take dey sure say no be more or less than 500 years sef? I tire for science jare.Have you heard about carbon dating? Pls read about. It?, |
obadiah777: ALL THESE DEMONIC PEOPLE. BURY THE GIRL AND LET HER RETURN TO THE DUSTReligious bigot. Colonial mentality. Brainwashed!!! |
luluosas: Please, leave Edo State of this terrorists mess. It is an open secret that, kidnapping is the business of the Ibos (South Easterners) of today as they are enjoying being kidnapped, even though the kidnapping business actually started in the Niger Delta (my region). Then, is was only foreign nationals that were being kidnapped to protests the continual neglect and destruction of the region by oil firms, which usually results in the oil companies paying heavily for their release. Today, kidnapping is a thriving business for the Ibos as even sales boys/girls have joined the bandwagon to arrange the abduction of their bosses for RANSOM. Only God will see us through. You speak as though u are not current in news and you leave abroad. Kidnaping is very high in Edo and Delta states. Many businessmen are targets and seriously planning to leave Edo state. Try read some back issues of local online papers to learn more |
The current thinking among experts in negotiating and release of victims of kidnapping is that the ransom be paid to save life and suffering of the victims first, then ways to arrest perpetrators put in place. This opinion was mooted during the time when Somalians were engaged in kidnapping sailors several years ago. One thing we do not follow up much is that a lot of kidnappers have been arrested after the crime and languishing in prison. Prevention of the crime is the key. |
brentkruge: is it just me.... Why is that with Nigerian journalist when they want a headline grabbing story its always given by nameless clandestine "source". What was the relationship of the "source" (assuming its a credible one) to the journalist to the extent of divulging such information?Kidnapping should be summary execution like armed robbery |
lasunray: * Day 1: Ngozi's mother was kidnappedWaoooo! You a superstar! So na GEJ na organize the kidnap? |
dick hardener: . They were paid far beyond that but chose to contain the figure from the public. That's right. Probably in region of hundreds of millions |
thelastPope: Wow! I completely missed that! You are spot on!Printer's devil!! |
Blackteeth: I think the best way to solve this kidnapping wahala is to seriously declare NO MORE PAYMENT OF RANSOMS.Good idea, but who would bell the cat? Nigerians always want the easy way out. No one wants to sacrifice their relative. |
blackwood: nice words bro! God bless you. That's nice. It is always a good idea to make it up with your dad, no matter how bad he appeared to be. It creates in you a sense of maturity and inner peace . Remember what Obama did, and he wrote dreams of my father, a biography of his early life |
VULCAN: This is a very touching post. Just generates wistful feelings. Those that have very positive reports about their father are the lucky ones. I must confess, I envy you. None of them know the pain of a bad father. Some of us have only horror stories. My siblings and I have no good memories of him.So sad to hear. If your dad is still alive try to get close to understand him a bit more. Sometimes these ""bad" fathers acted ignorantly or as a way of coping with the stresses of their lives, or just personality difficulties. Begin by talking to people who knew hom well, enquiring about his good qualities. Try find out if he treated people around badly as well. If your dad is passed on you still do this evaluation, understanding that no one was ever trained to be a parent. People just acted on instinct. When i was still dependent on my dad I use to see him as tyrannical but when I became independent and he could not hurt me anymore, I did this kind of evaluation that helped me know him more. I realized he had narcistic and obsessive personality traits that made him behave so tough. I also learnt he could be nice at times, respects your independence and choices in life in terms of professional and life partner choices, and an intelligent man. We beame great friends |
Ozonna: Just copied this from MFM site. EnjoyThat is good. The number 12 has mystical significance. Sometimes multiples of 12 is also important eg. 1. The twenty four elders who worship God in revelation. 2.The 144,000 people selected to inherit the heavenly thrones in the book of revelation. This kind of information supports the theory that most of the bible stories are not historical facts but myths written by sages with a special message. This includes the gospels and Jesus as a historical person. That there was no real person in the form of Jesus but that the mythical figure as the Christ represents the divinity in each of us. The Story of jesus was a myth that reveals the struggles anyone who finds the divine self has to undergo. There were no historical 12 disciples but they represented the twelve Departments of our spiritual life. Note passages in the gospels like , the kingdom of God is within you, ye are all Gods, and that in the beginning was the Word that has always been with us. Unraveling the true meaning of the bible stories and the gospels requires deep understanding and training in the mystery religions. |
toluleke: God of 12 TRIBES OF JUDAH wod make dis year a prosperous 12/12/12 12secWhat has the God of Israel got to do with Nigerian. We have our own Gods too! Colonial mentality!! |

[quote author=Curious_city]One of the best teacher I have encountered in life was a corp member. So, this generalization is fallacious. The former corper in question had a BSc in Engineering. Posted to my school while most of us were struggling to score 50-60% in Mathematics. He made us to know that the only way to know Maths is "solving Maths everyday". By the time he finished his one year service, he was hired on contract. In 2years time he turned most of us from D and E student(in Maths) to A and B students. That was when I dumped my dream of Medical science for Engineering. Though I have not seen or heard about him for over 20yrs, I hope I will be able to trace him one day. Kudos to Ebi Joe (Nickname) where ever U are!! That's great!! I was also motivated in my school work by several youth Corpers too. They. made us feel confident to become graduates! |
HARDDON: This is an absolute and acute Bullock !The teachers Council! Laugh out loud |
