Denel Vehicle Systems "Africa Truck". Thought of as the potential replacement of our old Samil Trucks. It's fair to say that the South African
defence industry is still alive and kicking. Chief of the SANDF had cancelled a tender for international bidders to replace the
Samils, and asked Denel, CSIR and Armscor to come up with a locally developed prototype. (Rough summary of what happened)

"Saab and Denel are exhibiting an air defence solution at this year’s AAD after a period of trials. Saab’s Giraffe AMB radar is partnered with Denel’s Umkhonto vertical-launch surface-to-air missile. The Giraffe radar was deployed to South Africa around six months ago, and has completed a number of successful firings with the Umkhonto system."

Denel Aviation Full Scale Fuselage Mockup - Small African Regional Aircraft

"Led by Denel, but involving many other government, academic and industrial stakeholders, the SARA programme is a candidate for a National Aerospace Flagship Programme. Not only does the SARA aim to provide an affordable ‘community’ airliner tailored to African transport requirements of the future, but also to act as a catalyst for the development of the local aerospace industry by creating a new pool of engineers and technicians.

SARA’s concept is for a twin-engined, 24-seat pressurised airliner that can operate point-to- point services between small, semi-prepared regional runways. The fuselage’s shape, with maximum diameter placed well forward, is a result of employing laminar flow design for maximum aerodynamic efficiency. At the same time, the ‘flattened’ shape of the fuselage allows four-abreast seating to be accommodated – unique for this class of aircraft – while still permitting standing in the central aisle."

Plans to build an upgraded Mk2 Rooivalk combat support helicopter look promising according to Secretary for Defence, Dr Sam Gulube.

Speaking ahead of the opening of the Africa, Aerospace and Defence (AAD) exhibition at AFB Waterkloof today (Tuesday) he said discussions and negotiations were ongoing with potential African partners to both contribute to actual manufacture of Rooivalk Mk 2 and potential users.

“We are looking at about 60 or so aircraft to be used by African air forces as well as their possible sale to BRICS partners, Brazil and India.”

SOUTH AFRICAN NAVY COMPLETES LIVE FIRING EXERCISE

The live firing section of the SA Navy’s force preparedness exercise Red Lion saw on target hits from a trio of platforms at the weekend.

The Valour Class frigates SAS Amatola and SAS Spioenkop supported by the Heroine Class submarine SAS Manthatisi conducted a co-ordinated torpedo and missile firing against a derelict fishing vessel south-west of Cape Point, in the Pandora training area.

“The objective of the firings was to test the full live firing sequence within the vessels and of the guided weapons and to exercise a co-ordinated and simultaneous attack on a single target by a submarine and frigates.

“All the three guided weapons were launched and detonated successfully on the target,” the Navy’s Captain Zamo Sithole said.

The frigates fired Exocet anti-ship missiles while the submarine fired an Atlas Elektronik SUT 264 torpedo.

SAAF TO TRAIN NAF PILOTS

https://www.defenceweb.co.za/images/stories/AIR/Air_new/Nigerian_L-39_300x400.jpg

Ten Nigerian Air Force officers are to be sent to South Africa on a one-year training course for pilots, the Nigerian Air Force has said.

Another ten will be sent to the United Kingdom, according to Chief of Training and Operations, Air Vice Marshal Ahmed Iya.

Twenty officers were selected for overseas training at the completion of their courses at the Nigerian Defence Academy and will return to improve counter-insurgency operations against Boko Haram.

Put all your 5 pilots together am sure they might still miss. Inexperienced and useless airforce. Pilots that were trained to carry politicians up and down.
Exactly...expected comment. Like a little toddler who teases a bird, and quickly runs back behind his parents (Henry240) once the bird starts flapping its wings. Zero reply from you, as expected. i.e waste of data

Australia has been poaching white South-Africans since like forever. It's not just pilots. How many Black South-Africans are in the RAAF?

First off, how many bleks are even flying in your air force, next to none!
Black SAAF pilots are poached by the likes of South African Airways. White SAAF pilots know its a much tougher road to becoming a Captain in SAA than it was 20 years ago, hence they jump ship overseas. Australia, UAE, UK, New Zealand etc. Reply to this message 50 years from now when such countries would ever consider hiring a Nigerian Air Force pilot. If the SAAF is useless then there isnt an English word in the dictionary that describes how pathetic the NAF is.

There is not one single thing that a NAF fighter pilot (with all his fake experience) can do, that a SAAF pilot cannot do....even better.

Is battlefield the same thing as demo? Or are you saying terrorist will demonstrate with you pilots? They are inexperience simple.
Come stand in an open field and lets see if our "inexperienced" Hawk or Gripen pilots will miss you. I'll pay for your plane ticket. There is not one single thing that any Nigerian fighter pilot has done in the past 5 years, that SAAF pilots havent been doing in training for years. NAF pilots face no sophisticated anti aircraft systems, face no enemy pilots in the sky. Which country is most likely to have its pilots poached by other airforces? SAAF or NAF? Why would Australia poach our Hawk pilots if we are inexperienced and useless? If you know the answer to that question you'll realise that sometimes its best to keep quiet.

A-Darter short-range (AAM) in trouble as Brazilian may be pulling out of the project

Rapid Fire | Thursday, April 21, 2016

A joint South African and Brazilian development of the 5th generation A- Darter infrared short-range air-to-air missile (AAM) is in trouble, as the latter may be pulling out of the project. Despite development work already being done on the missile, only South Africa has put in a production order, with Brazil citing financial troubles to be able to further integrate the
missile on the JAS 39 Gripen E fighter. South Africa has signed commitments to order the missile for the next five years, while Brazil is looking at existing missiles that are cleared for carriage on the latest
variant of the JAS 39.
There is a 3rd customer for A-Darter besides SA and Brazil.

"The SA National Defence Force’s (SANDF) Joint Operations Division (JOps) has told Parliament a pair of tactical UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) is among the resources available for ACIRC (African Capacity for Immediate Response to Crises).

This is a stopgap force backed by South Africa until such time as the African Union African Standby Force (ASF) is operational.

In its presentation to Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Defence, JOps said the tactical UAVs, not identified but believed to be Seeker 400s, will be supplied to ACIRC by Defence Intelligence (DI) with 10 personnel assigned and the rider that this specific component of the deployment still has to be confirmed.

Speculation has been rife in military circles that the unnamed “local customer” Denel Dynamics said was acquiring Seeker 400 UAVs is DI. Similarly the company has not been prepared to divulge exact numbers but it is believed the order is either for four or six complete UAV systems. The confirmation to the portfolio committee that UAVs are part of South Africa’s commitment to ACIRC is the first public acknowledgement of where the systems are going."

International Defence Politics 101

-Denel Land Systems bids for a massive deal to supply India with NTW20 20mm anti material rifles. Pic 1.

-Our engineers interact with them during the process of product evaluation. Suddenly Denel is accused of having paid bribes and is blacklisted by India.

-Many years later the ban is lifted after no court can find any evidence of brides being paid. But by now India is no longer looking for anti material rifles as they "have developed their own". Pics 2 and 3.

But its fine.. these things happen in this industry.
