As long as the names of the operators are not known, i don't see any problem. The Nigerian military high command releases Special Forces photos with operators faces in full glare.

We are in an operational environment, yet we haven't had any incidence. So i don't see any problems with that.

Here are typical images from the Military (Air Force, Navy & Army).

You Special Forces not showing their faces or weapons online holds no bounds on professionalism. It does not make the South-African Recces are professional unit. That argument is nonsensical and holds no grounds in fact or operational efficiency
Don't catch feelings...in the special forces community a face is more than enough info if someone is looking for you. Especially if units are known. And by the way Nigerian special forces are not the only ones with pics here, so don't take it personally.

Professional in the sense that there a clear rules regarding such, and rules are being followed. No SA special forces post selfies, reveal weapons and vehicles. e.g Motar system on Hornets was seen publicly this year at Arms forces day, before that, who knows how long its been in service. Rumours of SA special forces looking at anti aircraft capability....R500 for anyone who can say what that system even looks like.

What impresses me about South African special forces is that their pics/faces/weapons are not splashed around on the net. Sign of professional soldiers & of a system that understands the basic need for secrecy. This is not to take away from others who post pics....i guess the operational cultures are different.

How is a body search by clearly marked police abuse of rights? Um...that rifle is clearly pointed at the ground. And trust me, if you knew what Hillbrow is like, you would understand the need for such weaponry. Where most of Johannesburg's ruthless thugs call home.

...the Wagtail Trooper:

The Trooper has a pilot up front and two outward facing seats behind for the rapid deployment of personnel such as game rangers, who can disembark in under two seconds, with a payload of about 250kg - from surveillance equipment to military hardware. In SASF test configuration, has been armed with the the SS77 LMG as well as chaff and flare dispensers.
Flown more than 800 hours on anti-poaching patrols with SA National Parks and private operators. Has been exported to Botswana and Australia.

And tomorrow the hard chore of observing the Recces demonstrating its utility out in the field, at a game farm cool.
If this was facebook i would be saying "inbox" ;-)

Then they can't smuggle as much shells with them. After that they may have to deal with a quick reaction gunship which would be way cheaper than firing missiles.
I don't know which examples you're thinking of. But a typical U.N mission for example....the amount of higher ups that need to give permission before gunships are deployed, rebels are long gone. This system is not about being cheap, its about saving lives. Giving troops time to get proper cover, after initial incoming rounds are destroyed.

How many missiles would one have to fire to stop free falling mortar shells?

If mortar hits a machanised or motorised platoon, they can simply press on and gunships can deal with it. BUT if it's a base or camp that's under 120mm attack, then definitely someone is not doing his perimeter patrol because how on earth does an enemy sneak in such a big firing pipe within range.
120mm mortars can hit at 4,5,6,7km +. It is not beyond belief that enemy combatants can sneak such a system within range.

True that, nothing justifies firing a missile at an oncoming projectile if the projectile itself is not a missile.
Um...what if it's a 120mm mortar which is about to take out an entire section?

Wish a naval version(CIWS) of the missile to be developed in the future to replace the problematic Dual purpose guns.

Looks like the defence force isn't satisfied with the performance of the 35mm guns in the C-RAM role. Rheinmetall demonstrated their revolver guns to the defence force prior to the upgrade.

Now that the C-RAM missile looks like to be going ahead. Wonder what will happen to the Stealth Ingwe.

Would have gave SA an opportunity to maintain skills not taught any where but I doubt the lads with the skills(stealth tech) are still around.
We're not like the Americans....no budget to have dedicated skills for each project. Usually a mix and match. If a specific skill is lacking in-house, can always give CSIR (for example) a call. Or perhaps a university or 2.

Denel Dynamics unveils Cheetah C-RAM system

"Denel Dynamics has unveiled a system it is developing to protect deployed forces against rocket, artillery and mortar attacks.

The Counter-Rocket, Artillery and Mortar (C-RAM) system combines the Rheinmetall Skyshield protection system and Denel's Cheetah missile system, which is currently under development."

If things go right over the next few years this system will be a game changer. I know we've been told to TRY and look neat & tidy grin, as various delegations will be coming to campus to get more info on the system. But most informal at the moment.

1. South African A-Darter missile
2. Intial design of Chinese PL-10 missile

They initially thought they could steal a lot more info on A-Darter. So initially just went ahead with our design. And when the initial stolen info dried up, they were forced to use their own intellect and change their design.

P.S this is an unofficial story and may or may not be completely made up :-)

I see so there's pilots in Goma? Wow. Yes Saturday was my first time seeing the Gripen live and Lt col van Eck was one of the pilots. The 2 vs 1 was epic! Just wish it was once a year instead of every 2, was just so amazing seeing all the maneuvers. Everyone was really left in awe of the capabilities of particularly the Gripen and Rooivalk
In Goma...but not in Gripens. Sitting in the back of an Oryx probably, but Gripen pilot non the less.

There's definitely 5 or more black Gripen pilots from what i saw at AAD, however some may be reserves
The SAAF visits us from time to time to give feedback on certain weapons systems, so i have an idea of how many Gripen pilots there are (both black and white). SANDF still has a culture (i think its a good thing) of adding a bit of misinformation when civilians ask certain questions at public events. True with a sprinkle of false.

Who are the new peeps on here who don't know RSA is multiracial and in need of lecturing? Or are you referring to the Chinese dude or Indian dude?

Like i said previously, no one is wondering, apart from you, that is. No point exposing your butt-hurt on an African forum. We are all aware the military, like the society is mixed.
"Viewing this topic" changes regularly from regular names to new names. You know that for a fact. Anyone seeing such pics for the for time could naturally wonder why RSA being multiracial only seems to have white pilots. If "we" are all well aware, why was there a full blown debate a while back about the lack of black pilots in the SAAF or have you forgotten? In the days of Agaugust. If someone can ponder that then, why cant they now? We are all aware what a Gripen looks like, so why do you keep posting it's pics? Answer, to keep the thread going and inform any newcomers.

Go sulk elsewhere, whatever happened to you today is for you to deal with and you alone. My post was innocent. Deal with it.

Just incase people start wondering if the SAAF actually has black pilots grin. Display pilots at events like AAD will obviously have the most experience, hence the guys who crossed over from flying Cheetahs (mostly white). But the behind the scenes/everyday pilot numbers fast jet/heli/transport are looking more like this....

those strips near the nose cone indicates that the missile uses laser proximity fuze.
thats based on my knowledge .

any detailed info on the missile ?
and any confirmation on my observation ?
What i'll say is very often when new products are revealed for the 1st time, a bit of trickery is used. Competitors are obviously watching. So the mock ups displayed might incorporate initial ideas that were scraped a while ago. As long as the product looks generally like the intended final design then it is displayed. I know with A-Darter missile the thrust vectoring fins that were displayed publicly for the 1st time were used to throw competitors off.

This project is still very early stages. So no details as yet.

South African, European companies to cooperate on Rooivalk upgrade

Airbus Helicopters and Denel Aviation announced on Thursday that they were to cooperate on the upgrading of the South African Air Force's Denel Rooivalk Mark (Mk) 1 attack helicopters. The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this end at the Africa Aerospace and Defence 2016 exhibition at Air Force Base Waterkloof in Centurion, just south of Pretoria. The upgrade will take the form of a phased programme and will improve the supportability of the helicopter, improve reliability and replace obsolete components. The Rooivalk Mk 1 already uses Airbus Helicopter technologies in its dynamic components. The MoU also includes a proposed action plan for the companies to follow, subject to approval by the South African government.

Denel Dynamics - Cheetah C-Ram missile

Rheinmetall to develop a missile that will be integrated with the Skyshield system to give it a counter rocket, artillery, and mortar (C-RAM) capability, it was announced during the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) show held in South Africa 14-18 September.

"The concept was born out of two factors: one it is a business opportunity that we have identified and secondly to counter a threat that has emerged in the [African] continent. The South African defence force has been deployed on peacekeeping missions and we realised that they are under threat from mortars and artillery at relatively close range, so we needed a quick way of protecting our soldiers," Tsepo Monaheng, the chief executive officer of Denel Dynamics told IHS Jane's .

http://www.janes.com/article/63800/super-quick-c-ram-missile-aad16d2

"The Cheetah C-RAM missile system is seamlessly integrated into the Oerlikon Skyshield for a very powerful, layered air defence system, comprising a command post, one Skyshield sensor unit, two Oerlikon twin guns and up to two Cheetah missile launchers containing up to 60 missiles each. The system has a high level of automation and requires only a handful of operators for deployment. It provides area protection for forward bases at a 2.5km radius and can engage targets at a range of up to 6km."
