For a company like Denel, this is rather shameful.
But why are you surprised? You already gave your comments on what you think about Denel during that "top 100 defence companies debate". So what is a " company like Denel"?

In the past 18 months Denel had been virtually run to the ground financially by a corrupt board, under the direct influence of the ________ brothers and _______. Luckily that board has been removed, and changes are being made.

It will take many more months for Denel to recover to a positive position. Meanwhile people are being retrenched and some staff short paid. But there is light at the end of the tunnel with upcoming procurements and/or deals which have yet to be announced publicly.

Sorry,Saffas but your Mwari with its 800 kg payload will never be anything but an anti poaching, border patrol possibly FAC or arty spotting platform. That 800 kg payload is too low for anything else-the Tuc maxes out at 1.5 T while the AT carries up to 3.5 T!
We'll see what role its launch customers use it in.

Problem with using the Ingwe motor from the parts bin is that you wont be able to hang 2 missiles next to each other. The rocket burn will damage the one next to it. I guess they'll use it on smaller UCAVS and market the one based on the Mokopa on bigger ones.
Yes. On the Seeker 400 they sit on opposite hard points away from each other.

tell me about "Soldier 2000"
Was developed over 4 years by the CSIR. So the pattern was developed through a dedicated project, not just picking a scheme that "looks how camouflage should look". It's a combination of the pattern as well as the material used.

Thing I found interesting was the pattern is designed to function in the infrared/night time observation realm....it wouldn't have occurred to me that they thought about that, or how to even do that.

Foreign AffairsRe: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by ssaengine: 7:50pm On Sep 13, 2018
Fun Fact: The SANDF "Soldier 2000" camouflage pattern isn't only designed for day time use, but the pattern and materials were also designed to function in the near infrared spectrum. Meaning a soldier wearing the pattern at night is less likely to be picked up by thermal cameras. Don't ask me how this witchcraft works (since I don't know), but it's true.

Right Wing you say? Well are entitled to keep deluding yourself even when the stark truth is right in front of you if it makes you feel better. South Africa was once the jewel of Africa, a well organized country, it had the largest middle class and there was relative harmony. Your wellfare ideology that has been ingrained into your DNA has clouded your sense of reasoning. Just like Zimbabweans. The situation is so bad that RUSSIA...of all places, RUSSIA and Australia have offered unconditional migration for displaced White South Africans as they flee in droves. South Africans have to be the laziest bunch on people. You accuse Africans of stealing your jobs, your women, doing drugs and go on a killing spree against ''those stealing jobs''. Youve extended to White South Africans. They are responsible for taking away all the jobs and economic opportunities. Your ''state wellfare'' ideology is the root of your problems, not land owners or migrants. Get off your ass and create opportunities, be entrepreneurial. At the rate at which SA is heading the tense social enviroment and lack of productivity will lead it to become another Zimbabwe in no time.
YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT..... It's just that simple. I am telling you that you are merely quoting news from fake websites, and you just keep blindly vomiting it here.

I saw that Russia story. Whoever made it up didn't bother to research how many farmers SA has. "15 000 SA farmers start leaving for Russia" grin grin grin. More than half of our farmers...so in fact we are already a Zimbabwe, and starving.

And how many of South Africa's 4.5 million white people applied for that special Australian Visa proposed by that crazy Australian minister? Out of the 4.5 million whites being persecuted by us blacks, murdering them, carrying out a genocide on them.... only 213 grin grin grin grin grin

South Africa has many social problems no doubt, as does your country.... wherever that may be. I'm opposed to many state sponsored initiatives and encourage people to be entrepreneurial.

The only reason I commented here is to rebuff that "like Zimbabwe* nonsense. Our land reform process is not the same, we are not kicking productive farmers out of anywhere, we are not kicking people out of their homes.

In a free and civilised society you don't take people's stuff based on the colour of their skin. It was wrong when it took place under Apartheid, and it is wrong now. It appears South Africa is trying to repeat what happened in the past, only in reverse mode, making them no less racist than white apartheid and erasing at a stroke the legacy and struggle of Nelson Mandela, sharing the same proud legacy of racist apartheid.

Eighteen years ago, the leading party of Zimbabwe ZANUPF was threatened with election loss, and in order to shore up its support amongst its electorate, Robert Mugagbe decided to expropriate the white farmers of  Zimbabwe. What that led to, aside from the horrific violence so horrific the Nigeria carved out huge swathes of land in Kwara State and invited white Zimbabwean farmers to come farm, was a total economic collapse of the country on an apocalyptic scale. Half a century of economic growth and infrastructural development was wiped out in Zimbabwe as a result of this particular policy.

The country experienced hyper inflation such as the world has never seen. The government had to abandon its currency when a loaf of bread cost $10 million Zimbabwean dollars. The country's unemployment rate was %95. The worse the world has ever seen. Armed robbery increased, infant mortality increased, life expectancy plummeted, and perhaps most importantly, agricultural production collapsed. Hunger ensued.

Rhodesia went from a relatively wealthy country with some of Africa's best infrastructure and institutions, to a rundown desperately country that made Nigeria look like Sweden in comparison.

That the white men had a shameful history that will be forever etched in their past doesn't mean Africans have to follow suit. South Africa has taken xenophobia to a whole new level of self sabotage. The Nigerian government and the African Union has to denounce the policy. It is both immoral because it targets a specific group of people, and secondly it could be economically destructive.

It's like South Africa forgets it's not a resource rich country like Nigeria. %80 of government earnings comes from the service sectors and tourism, meaning external events or decisions taken can have adverse effect of the South African economy, same way a drop in oil prices affects the Nigerian economy.

If the new South African President , Cyril Ramaphosa, just months into his tenure changes the constitution and legalizes what is essentially theft of private property, it risked being kicked out of the Common Wealth and AGOA. It will take South Africa years to recover from the negative consequences that will ensue. This will be another Zimbabwe in the making.
Rather keep quiet if you do not know what you are talking about, or rather stop believing fake news on Twitter. South Africa's land reform program is not the same as Zimbabwe's.

You need to live in South Africa to understand it, not try pretend you know something based on Twitter.

Example....there are many high rise buildings in Johannesburg CBD whose owners last set foot in SA 30 years ago. The municipality cannot legally use those buildings as low cost housing or student accommodation, because the courts will first ask....what does the owner say? These are high rise slums, we've all heard about Hillbrow and Yeoville. We must first pay an owner in Belgium for a building he stopped maintaining 30 years ago?

Some land is simply being hoarded for future investments 50 years from now. From the province I come from there are some farmers with tracks of land the size you cannot believe. It will blow your mind. Some of that land doesn't even know what a tractor is, because it's not productive land. It's land for the sake of having land. The government has repeatedly said productive farms will not be targeted, as was the case in Zimbabwe.

But you've fallen for the trap of believing some fake news from right-wingers who can't even point out SA on a map.

I'm assuming they'd do a "Zero flight hour" rebuild of all the majorly stressed components like they did with the Cheetah. They developed all new composite wings for the Cheetah that never made it to production. Those C models are still flying today. As far as engines go , they had over a lot of new Atar's in stock. Extra engines were bought when we acquired the F1's. The Russian engines (super mirage) would also be an option.

The Cheetah C (1995/7) had a minimum 15 year service expectancy and had two 5 year pre-planned life extensions. Those mirage III airframes were considerably older than the F-1's so , it's not inconceivable that a F1 upgrade could make it to 2030-35 with midlife extensions. The F1 was a much more capable aircraft to start with than the Mirage III. An Atlas upgrade would have been formidable. The current SAAF Gripen would have a tough time against a Elta radar/ R-Darter BVR equipped F1.
As a bonus, most of the $1.8Bn would have been spent in SA. That would make it much harder for corrupt politicians to hide the money.(Dont mess with SARS !)

Ironically ,I might get to see the last Cheetahs in action. The US company that bought them aren't far from where I live. We have lots of airshows here and I wouldn't be surprised if they make an appearance. Lots of private migs etc. participate every year along with the USAF.

Here's a pick of what a mid-life upgraded Cheetah C might have looked like.
I get you, but I'm not sure I'm a fan of zero hour-ing an airframe and returning it to frontline use. Especially if you'll be adding your own components to the airframe. End up with a mix and match of components from all over the show, and if a certain supplier closed down 20 years ago that's an added cost. It's possible yes, but I'm not a fan. I would personally rather spend that cash on a family of weapons systems to integrate on a new platform. The Gripen package was meant to have come with SRAAM's, BRAAM's, stand off weapons etc.

Some pics of SAAF F1's with fangs out.
Would have loved to see what they'd look like after a Atlas upgrade like the Cheetah's , but with the systems and weapons Denel had in the works during the 90s. It would be interesting to see what they would do with the +/- $1.8B that was spent on the Grips.
Assuming they upgraded 36 F1's that would come to about $50mil per plane budgeted.
I personally don't think there would have been much room to maneuver on upgrades. Even if Denel pulled out all the stops, just from an airframe fatigue point of view....they wouldn't have been able to carry us up until 2030+ like Gripen is expected to do.

https://www.businessinsider.co.za/south-africas-largest-3d-printer-is-so-big-that-it-takes-up-to-r75-million-in-titanium-powder-to-fill-it-2018-7

South Africa has the world’s biggest 3D printer

"South Africa’s biggest 3D printer is also the largest in the world, and could print a full-sized adult man using titanium powder - although it would be very expensive.

The printer, designed and built as part of a collaboration between Aerosud Innovation Centre and the CSIR’s National Laser Centre in Pretoria, uses titanium powder to build its custom-made products. It was funded by the Department of Science and Technology.

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, involves melting a single layer of metal or plastic together, and fusing it to a layer below. With this manufacturing technique, it is in theory possible to build very complex objects.

Demand for 3D printing is high in industries like medical prosthetics and aviation, where clients need a small number of complex parts made out of high-value materials like titanium.

The machine can print parts up to 2m x 60cm x 60cm, says Marius Vermeulen, programme manager at Aeroswift. But it is very expensive - to fill the machine with enough titanium powder would cost in the region of R7.5 million - so the engineers made sure that the machine could also make smaller parts, allowing them to focus on producing parts to customer specifications.

"One client is AHRLAC (which stands for Advanced High-performance Reconnaissance Light Aircraft), which is using Aeroswift components in its planes. We are supplying South African parts from South African machines to South African aircraft,” says CSIR National Laser Centre commercialisation manager Hardus Greyling.

But using the giant printer to produce parts is not the end game for the Aeroswift team: they want to build more printers. “The current machine was built with a dual goal: produce parts and do R & D,” Vermeulen says. “This machine was over designed to allow us to do everything possible. It is a beast. The next machines will be cheaper and built for industrial use.”

So they are producing two new machines which will be dedicated to producing 3D printed titanium parts. They aim to have them complete in the next two years."
