This is bad and inhuman. You took their lives unjustly and unprovoked then seized their corpses in a bid to conceal the whole act. I keep saying it. The uproar that set the stage for removal of PDP wasn't up to this and only rigging or lack of good alternative will put APC there beyond 2023. Shiites are angry up north. Same thing with NE folks too. The Christians too are, and finally the bulk of southerners too are mad with APC.

I didn't say it's not, but why will private varsities scrap such a vital prerequisite?

Cos they want more students (even if the student is dull), which means more money.

And what i am driving at is that it has been bastardized at the basic level.

A pupil might not pass common entrance, but any private school will take such a student.

A pupil might not pass junior waec, but any private school will admit such.

In fact if a pupil haven't been to school before, such a pupil will enter Js1 or ss1 in a private school.
You are still missing the whole point. It is about channelling brilliant minds to disciplined that are more critical to the society and world at large but are lacking in numbers. Reduce accountants and lawyers and have more doctors and engineers creating much needed services.

The army and police should also insist they don’t want to be part of ippis, that they are a special institution and civil servants
FG shouldn't have bulged on that IPPIS part. Any average MIS administrator can configure like à dozen payroll app to accommodate lecturers and all their unique benefits. They are hiding somethings from FG.

Just like they bastardized common entrance, junior waec.

This man is saying Jamb is just a ranking exam.
He was right. JAMB is a ranking exam. It helps the system filter out those who passed WAEC but are not in the top percentile of best candidates. It is a little bit like interview after aptitude test.

Another issue is, those hundreds of students in a department must have been admitted on merit. And also base on poverty in Nigeria and so many low income families, if 25 out them were chosen, what will be the fate of the remaining 75?
They will cause more nuisance to the society because if they are not i school, their is also no job they can lay their hands on till the next admission year.
You have a point about those not admitted being out of sch and being nuisance to the society but the whole point here isn't about that. It is about taking the student not admitted to other important fields the society needs. If too many accountants or lawyers are ending up as hair dressers, then it might just be wise to find a way to lure them to or pull them towards other fields that ate in shortage in the society. Fields like mechatronics.
Let me share a though with you in the hope of making see why some fields are needed.
When America was facing the huge decision of whether to abolish slave trade, the inventions of certain individuals help speed up that decision because the birthed the industrial age and it meant machines could do a lot more to relieve humans of stress. They started pushing bright minds towards fields that could advance the industrial revolution. These are minds who would have ordinarily gone for literature or law or accounting. This same pattern repeated itself again in the nuclear energy knowledge revolution.

Right now in Nigeria, we need more doctors. Why not reduce accounting intake a little and increase that for medical student to close that gap? No one is saying they should stop taking accounting students. Just use the scarce resources to meet the more urgent and pressing demands by allowing more doctors to be trained. A first class material in accounting will always make a good doctor, at least to me, I see it that way, so why keep the brilliant accountants in labor market when they can be systematically channelled to medicine and surgery to meet the demands of the society? Same too for lawyers. Do you know how many lawyers end up in soap making or hairdressing business. Businesses so many uneducated folks can easily beat them in by offering competitive services.

You blame ASUU for the outcome of students when the government/jamb peg admission at 160 for jamb?

You all also blame public institutions for conducting post utme to admit the brilliant ones.

Private university can even accept students with 110 jamb score.

There is nothing again in this country, make everybody just dey push am.
The issue on ground isn't one of simple blame game.

Go to uniben and see their law department, it is like five private university combined. That leaves the society with many lawyers who don't get a chance to put to practice what govt has has subsidized. What if the the FG through NUC forces down the number of law department intake with their influence over the schools(after all the FG funds them) and make room for new and emerging fields that are needed in the society? Think about it. The FG just releases money to please the people or students and parents at the expense of the the productivity of the schools and their graduates.

Agbegbaorogboye:
Biochemistry degrees are not the only subpar degrees. ALL degrees including the engineering and medicals are subpar.
As for demand, a common mistake which led us to where we are development wise is to see higher education as a form of job hunting and not to seek deeper knowledge.
Do you know there's a degree in photography in developed nations?
Your interest should lead to what you study not what to eat.
So no degree is a waste in itself. It's the society that loses not the degree holder in the long run.
Cue coronavirus and how backwards we've been in research.
I think what he is saying is about demand and supply on one hand, then the need to balance or match quality of supply with expectation of the society on the other hand.
Accounting for example is one field where we have excess graduates and from experience, those who studied analytical sciences can easily make the switch to accounting and effortlessly excel. That leaves the system or head of the system(the FG, NUC) with a decision on whether to keep large accounting departments in highly subsidized schools or to reduce the size of accounting departments intake per year and force more people into new and emerging fields like mechatronics engineering, computational science, structural designs that can greatly impact the productivity of the populace overall?
Accounting is relevant but having 10 accountant justle for 1 accounting job and zero Mechatronics or structural designer for industrial jobs is a sign the system needs a change in direction.

The job you would need 10 accountants for before can now be done with 2 accountants, 1 programmer and a one system engineer or network engineer. That leaves some accountants idle and an industry lacking the latest tools (technology) will remain uncompetitive globally.

The FG is paying more money into a system that's largely not in shape to meet the societal demands they should be meeting.
It makes no sense for us to struggling with mechanized farming when we have too much brains to conquer mechanization. We need to take some brain from where they are less needed due to saturation and put them in new and emerging fields that can solve our problems. Look at covid-19 testkit production or design, we just muster some effort to save our face, in reality we stood no chance of making an affordable test kit.

No one said universities should stop offering those disciplines. I'm saying there's no market fit with it. You've been producing biochemistry students with subpar education for the past three decades. How have they benefitted the Nigerian state?

What you have are many aspirational degrees that are not in demand from the private sector at this moment. Especially in the sciences.
Until foundational issues are corrected with the non robust economy a number of people would study with govt subsidy and end up doing something totally different.
People are wired naturally to defend what they feel they are part of. Just leave them alone if they cannot understand you.
