gentlegenius: Guy, I don't understand why you are wasting so much time to defend against this issue. Even if the stats the Op posted are wrong as you claimed, but you and I know the truth: Those countries don't take religion seriously as Nigerians do. Nigeria arguably has the highest number of Pastors and religious worship centers in the world. There are over 40000 churches in Lagos alone, I don't even mention mosques. Almost everyone who can't get good jobs in this difficult country are going into ministry as Pastors. There's a slight correlation between our country's lack of technological advancement and our over religious lifestyle. Those countries developed because they invested more in themselves by acquiring quality knowledge while we invest more in our religions. Those countries spent more time and money on research while we spent more time in our worship centers. Those countries invent luxurious cars and private jets but we spent our money to buy such cars and jets for our Pastors and religious leaders thereby boosting their income. Why won't they be richer than us? Why won't they advance and develop more than us? When they were busy generating ideas to build their countries, we were busy fighting religious wars and destroying our country. When they were listening to good seminars and learning how to invest their money, we were listening to prosperity messages from our Pastors and learning how to pay tithes and sow seeds. This country will never change until we change our mentality. But unfortunately, today's Pastors and religious leaders has brainwashed us to the point that we believe religion is the only way to progress. Well put, sir. |

ScepticalPyrrho: Why would you believe it's a mighty being and not beings?
I believe your line of thought is still influenced by your former belief.
When you say it is a being what picture of it do you have in mind?
If a being created this existence, how did it exist in the first place?
You need to take your scepticism a little further, if your intent is to be objective.
Is this universe part of the being or not? If not... Where did it get the materials from? If yes? Can we say there is a being or we are the being? If we are the being, is it still right to say "there is a mighty being"?
Being a deist is just a safe landing... You can still get a little further, till you realize that every position about the universe appeals to our nature to know, and there is no known answer, but mere speculations. This is where it gets twisted, and I see no shame in admitting that we are ignorant of the facts no matter the belief which we end up accepting. Bro, is this atheist evangelism? Call it whatever you want, I believe that there is a higher power. The being does not have to be part of the universe. Something must have created the universe. I theorize that the being could have come from another universe. |

2.I also explained why Japanese don't consider themselves as religious
Your irrationality and close-mindedness exposed again Sir, it is like you enjoy telling lies without any shame. The original argument is not whether Japanese people follow both religions of shinto and buddhism as this was addressed in the op. Clearly, you cannot read; superhumanist: -60% of the population of Japanese are atheists but 155% are religious as people follow 2 or more religions culturally. http://www.religionfacts.com/japan Your second point is redundant. Japanese people are not religious. Even your source contradicted you. As for the rest of your comment, I will treat it like the trash it is and not dignify it. The op is about developed countries leaving religion. Please address that. I can see that you avoided talking about Europe, UK and the USA. It is a clear trend. |

KingEbukasBlog: You have a snippet of a Japanese website that clearly stated that they are in harmony and that there Japanese people who identify as both Shintoists and Buddhists . I gave you an example with one of Taoism's beliefs that appears to be congruent with a Christian belief to show how some religious beliefs can be in harmony .
Very close-minded and delusional I see . Deists are usually logical and mentally fluid but you are a direct opposite of who they are . I think you are an atheist who purports himself as a deist . Sir, I believe that you are a mature man who shouldn't be dishonest and so, why are you doing this? Is it because I didnt want to bother correcting your huge lies? Okay, I will correct you once and for all. How can a person be born shinto, marry with church wedding and buried with buddhist rites?
Leave the fool to argue that Japanese are religious. What they say about him is true. He is even trying to lie that Buddhism and Shintoism are in harmony. They both have any contradictory beliefs I'll let him deceive himself. Even his quote does not support him. |

Just the same way that as a Christian I've come some very interesting beliefs in Taoism like the wei wu , a way of showing calmness and not carried away by turbulence and letting things work themselves out by doing nothing . 1. China
According to Yang and Hu (2012) , 55.5% of the adult population (15+) of China, or 578 million people in absolute numbers, believe and practice folk religions, including a 20% who practice ancestor religion or communal worship of deities .
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_folk_religion#Demographics
And this is just the population that deals with traditional religions in China like Han folk religion and Confucianism . The remaining population comprises of Christians , Muslims , Buddhist and other religions
In the same China , by 2030, China's total Christian population, including Catholics, would exceed 247 million, placing it above Mexico, Brazil and the United States as the largest Christian congregation in the world, he predicted.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/10776023/China-on-course-to-become-worlds-most-Christian-nation-within-15-years.html Sir, please learn to read before you post. 247 million to a billion is 24%. China is irreligious and its communist party is irreligious. China will always be majorly irreligious. Your post does not negate the original point in the op. Or are you unseriously trying to argue that china is more christian or will be more christian than irreligious? Sir please, kindly think before you post. |

KingEbukasBlog: 2. Japan
In 2009, an official survey showed that over half the Japanese families had a "butsudan" or Buddhist altar in their homes. A 2009 data from the Agency of Cultural Affairs stated that there were 89 million Buddhists in Japan. In 2011, Usa Today reported that 90% of the Japanese identified as Buddhist or Shinto or a combination of both.
Population: 127 million (2016) People are right when they say that you do not read before you comment. Japanese will follow 2 opposite religions just for cultural sake. They are not religious. Shintoism and buddhism are two different religions, how then can one practise both? Japanese are not religious- they are born shinto, have buddhists rites and then have christian weddings Culture not religion |

Who religion don EPP?
Religion don help the world as a society....some of the first societies to arise were based solely around a common religion. Without religion, it would have been extremely unlikely for humans to find any cultural common ground. Most early tribal peoples would have driven each other to extinction based on the belief that one group must be superior than the other. Religion provided the belief that humans are under a deity, and therefore equal (In the case of most religions).
Religion don help nigeria greatly...many benefits in our society exist today due to prevalent of religion...it provides a sense of unity for communities and most religions provide charity services at no expense to the state or the tax payer. Churches, Mosques, temple, and other forms of voluntary institutions are simply more able to provide aid to those in need than individuals or governments. My brother, let us not lie to ourselves. Religion is a problem and not a solution as far as Nigeria is concerned. The way we practice religion in Nigeria is just too much. Go and see christians in Europe. They mind their business. They mostly do not tithe. Churches there dont disturb peace with loudspeakers and they pay tax. They are very discreet with miracles. They actually do proper charity that helps (not just giving bags of rice). |

JackBizzle: Nigeria is not as ultra-religious as it once was. The topic of atheism is no more taboo as it once was. It is now discussed in various media.
1) Radio talkshows; I have witnessed radio hosts discussing twice about atheism despite the fact that I only listen to radio once in a while. The first was an atheist challenging the existence of God on a christian talkshow on sunday on 93.7, the other was a radio talkshow host complaining of her roommate not believing in God (cant remember the radio station)
2) Atheist groups and conventions; two new atheist groups have come up and there is an atheist convention on the 11th of september. One of the groups is a humanist one and the other on is the atheist convention of Nigeria (ASN), which is having the convention.
3) Growth of atheist numbers on Nairaland, twitter and facebook; there is no week I dont see some criticism of religion or God on twitter or facebook by a Nigerian. This shows that the internet gives voices to those who are more careful in real life. Nairaland is the den of atheist- no need to even talk about it. I just noticed 2 new atheist groups on facebook. I also know that whatsapp groups are also emerging. |

akintom: The erroneous definition of atheism, is largely responsible for the conflict of thoughts, When it comes to perceptive expectations from persons labeled as atheist.
Really, nobody can be called an atheist. Because that would suggest a philosophical or ideological or conceptual entity.
The "RESPONSE" to the UNSUBSTANTIATED claims of existence of Gods, is what originated the label - atheist.
Since atheistic "response", isn't ideological nor conceptual nor philosophical, the "responder" can't have existential status.
So, someone can hold atheistic response, but infirmed of decency, reason and empathy in relating with other aspects of life.
My opinion! Sir, I did not ask you to burst my brain with grammar this morning. |

Tithe again? The way these tithe peddlers lie for tithes is quite annoying.
OP, Abram did not tithe. Abram gave a tenth of the spoils of war to Melchizedek.
Other bible versions (Living bible, international standard version) state that it was a tenth of the loot/everything.
It is only King James version that uses "tithe". That tithe was not a typical tithe offering but a tribute of spoils of war.

STUPUDTHEISTS: Technically everybody is agnostic - both theists and atheists. Nobody can know for certain or make conclusive claims about god existence or inexistence - not even the theist or the so-called gnostic atheists. In fact I think it's just a blatant display of arrogance to claim to know there's a god or there's not one. So we're left with belief. You either believe or you don't. Agnosticism doesn't equate to sitting on the fence - it's simply the position of every person towards God. The question that ascertain one's label - theism or atheism - is a simple one: DO YOU BELIEVE IN GOD?
It's not surprising people are not asked "do you know about God existence?" because it's a useless question - we're all agnostics. Anybody tagging himself gnostic or whatever is just being plain stupid and arrogant. Wow, that's a hard-line absolutist view. You are technically correct though. Where you are wrong is the fact that we can be 100% sure that the Abrahamic god does not exist. This is because it is nonsensical and contradictory. |
