Let’s take a look at the YouTube channels of some of the most mouthed artistes in the country for the basis of this case study.

PSquare comes in at 500k+, surprisingly even after taking in virtually the most video views compared to most top Nigerian artistes. Their “Shekini” video closed at 50 million views and “Personally” surpassed it for a mind blowing 74 million views!


Wizkid’s subscriber base is a mere 158k+ despite featuring the likes of international acts such as Drake, Tinnie Temper and the lot.

But that’s as far as music goes. The comedy and music niches differ. Why don’t we compare stats with top comedy acts in Nigeria to really understand where Mark Angel Comedy stands.

Supposed king of comedy, Basketmouth has (I myself couldn’t believe it) just 57k+ subscribers.

Bovi at 47k+ and AY aggregated the most we checked at 256,294. I didn’t even find any video of Bovi and Basket that reached up to a million views! You’ll agree with me that these are virtually the top three comedians in Nigeria. Unfortunately their YouTube channels don’t agree with that.

But take a look at new comer, Mark Angel Comedy which began only 4 years ago on YouTube. I think these statistics shows some serious future prospects for these guys. They have several individual skits aggregating millions of views (from merely one year ago).

In Ovia North East Local Council, nine cities in Edo State Nigeria have been denied electricity by their power holding company for the past 5 years, The Guardian reports.

The affected cities in Edo State Nigeria are namely betta, Utese, Uhen, Obgese, Olumoye, Ugbuwe, Aghanokpe, Okodo and Ugbodo.

Commenting on the issue, Mr. Terry Ebose, the youth President of Utese community, one of the affected cities in Edo State Nigeria, spoke with newsmen at lamenting that the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) for some unknown reason denied the cities in Edo State Nigeria electricity during their tenure. A situation which is yet to be resolved by the takeover company that serves Edo State, Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC).

Mr. Ebose explained that PHCN had told them that it’s installations that supplied the communities at Okada couldn’t carry the load of other communities simultaneously.

This resulted in the well renowned scenario of light sharing that some Lagos residents (like myself) have become accustomed to. This scheme saw these communities not having electricity for up to 2 weeks at a stretch before the company convinently forgot about them.

Apparently, it would seem there are some parts of the Nigerian constitution we regular people don’t know about, and the mere fact that a lady can sue we the guys for jilting them after the promise of marriage (not that I’m one of those type of guys anyway) is nerve racking.

Nigerian house of senate elections come 2019 is promised to be a tough one as we just learnt the latest concerning aspirants and you would not believe that the wife of ex president Good luck Jonathan, Dame Patience Jonathan has revealed her interest to run for the Rivers state east senatorial district.

Although sources claim that she is being pressured to run by a team of politicians who are currently reaching out to influential leaders in Rivers state that could ensure the outcome of her efforts, the fact remains that Dame Patience Jonathan has been deeply involved in politics since the time of Writing Ameachi so it doesn’t come as a surprise to some.

However, her interest in the Nigerian house of senate elections may hit some hitch due to the on going investigation of the former first lady by the EFCC.

What most political analysts aren’t seeing meanwhile is the strong bond between Governor of Rivers, Wike Nyesom and Dame Patience Jonathan.

While I know most will cite seemingly solid reasons ranging from contract endings to unending legal battles between artistes and label owners, others like me would argue that after all, if it wasn’t for these hated record labels, the top artistes you so idolize would barely have had a chance in the world to blow, considering the fact that it takes not just raw talent, but a huge financial backing to succeed in our industry.

Still, people will nonetheless love to just crucify the labels with a bony crooked finger as being the sole cause of the rifts (we remember how everyone took Tuface’s side back when he and Kennis Music were at loggerheads.)

Record labels on their part would argue that if the good for nothing artistes had just abided by the laws of their contracts, then all would be fine and dandy.

But then again, artistes would counter argue that if the greedy old label bosses who drafted the contracts had been fair in the first instance, then they’d have been business partners for life. On this note I recall a fellow artiste I know who got a deal offer from Reminisce’s Edge Record at an 80-20 profit sharing margin in favour of Edge of course. Such exploitative deals could cause serious fracas in the future.

Remembering the age of some houses I saw at Ikeja, Lagos state once, it’s evident that a times no matter how much you offer some home owners, they won’t just move away from their houses even if it’s for the greater good of the city. Word reaching us from Runtown’s camp is that the ‘Bend down pause’ crooner has lamented the non payment of his royalties, performance fees etc and also, the threat on his life by the CEO of Eric Manny records.

Meanwhile, Eric Manny CEO, billionaire businessman Okwudili Umenyiora, got a court injunction preventing Runtown from performing at any show or recording any song without prior approval from Eric Manny. Runtown meanwhile has called on his lawyers to review his record contract and they found out that he had the right to cancel his contract at a court of arbitration. I guess we’ll see how it goes from here.

Remembering the age of some houses I saw at Ikeja, Lagos state once, it’s evident that a times no matter how much you offer some home owners, they won’t just move away from their houses even if it’s for the greater good of the city.
