Afam4eva: This captures the hypocrisy that is ACN/APC. Isn't it funny that the same party they deride is the same party that they keep choosing their presidential candidates from. When this people are in PDP, they are evil but when they move to ACN/APC, they're progressives.
Aside Atiku, was Ribadu a card carrying member of the PDP? Working for a government does not necessarily mean you belong to the ruling party. Ngozi worked for OBJ and now GEJ, and she is not a PDP card carrying member.

A trivial way to respond, and a response lacking in substance. Is Okupe no longer a media aide to the president? The reply he gave when asked the same question suggests that the president has an agenda, and that he is ready to quash and crush anyone that proves a stumbling block? While trying to demonstrate your arrogance and know-all attitude, clarify what Okupe meant by "achieving set goals and collateral damages".

Go back to school to learn that conducting Primaries is not legally binding on stakeholders within a party who retain the discretion to deploy any method they deem best to appoint candidates for positions. Olodo.

Some of you, frankly, should not be here. from your glaring and sometimes shocking 'deficits' you should be busy with efforts at improving yourselves educationally instead of coming here daily to disturb others with your incredibly ignorant rants.
I am waiting for one of them to point at a section in the Electoral Acts that says candidates must emerge through primaries? Is it not absurd that the party(PDP) that claims to conduct (sham)primaries end up facing several litigation cases from aggrieved aspirants, and same cannot be said of the party(ACN) that select candidates. If primaries is all about using public funds, bribing members with thousands of dollars to vote for a particular aspirant, absence of congress and imposition of candidates from ward level to the National level to vote at convention or primaries, then it is not worth it.

Bola Tinubu Speaks On The Purported Removal Of Opeyemi Bamidele As Leader Of Ekiti State Caucus In The House Of Reps.

It has been reported that members of the Ekiti State Caucus in the House of Representatives suspended Hon. Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, as their leader because of his alleged declaration to contest the governorship election next year.  I have not seen an official word through the party machinery about this action. However, I feel compelled to speak to dispel rumor and false report from assuming the aspect of fact.

The news of the purported removal of  Opeyemi Bamidele came as a surprise. The decision of the members of the Ekiti House Caucus in this regard truncates ongoing efforts at reconciliation, notwithstanding the fact that the party leadership is working hard to reconcile all sides. What took some members of the leadership of the party to Ekiti State recently was a continuation of the process of appeal and reconciliation. The objective here is to first understand and iron out the issues that have resorted in a gulf between Opeyemi Bamidele and Governor Kayode Fayemi on one hand and the party towards building a formidable political house in Ekiti.

From my vantage point, I don’t believe the members of the Ekiti caucus could possibly take such a step for such a scant reason.  I trust their democratic pedigree to highly believe that they would not be used to take this false step which would violate established party rules, processes and traditions.

For instance, decisions of this critical nature must be done with the consultation of the national leadership of the party.  From what I can gather, our National Chairman and the party’s leadership were never consulted nor notified about the pendency of such a stark action.  For that reason alone, if such an action has been taken, those who did so should retrace their steps to avoid creating an unnecessary difficulty for themselves and the Ekiti chapter of the party.

Beyond the issue of procedure and rules, there is the tiny matter of internal party democracy to consider. I  have said before, any party member has a right to contest the governorship of Ekiti  or any other state. Any other person, including Opeyemi Bamidele, has the right to. This right is so fundamental to internal democracy that I do not believe he should be sanctioned at this point where the most he has done is make unofficial statements about contesting. Our party cannot join the club of other parties that punish members for expressing interests in an office.

While Opeyemi Bamidele’s position may not be popular among his colleagues, he has the right to believe as he does. We must protect and smother unpopular and minority positions. If we don’t like it, we vote against it at the appropriate time but we do not punish people simply for thinking differently, this is how we must grow our democracy.

Thus, Opeyemi Bamidele was expressing his democratic rights. To unilaterally suspend him as leader of the House Caucus is a questionable one they should reconsider.  It would appear to contravene the letter and best spirit of party democracy. While we have no problem in him pursuing his democratic ambition without intimidation and persecution, we will continue our efforts at persuading him not to rock the boat and play into the hands of our opponent particularly the PDP shenanigans. Political conflict, challenges and resolutions are the hallmarks of political association and leadership; orderly means of all efforts at democratically resolving those conflicts are not endless in any way.

Accordingly, I urge our five lawmakers; Robison Ajiboye, Bamidele Faparusi, Bimbo Daramola, Dr. Ifeoluwa Arowosoge, and Oyetunde Ojo to  reverse themselves and embrace the process of amicable resolution already put in place by the party and that have been producing good fruit. To do otherwise is to give comfort to those who would seek to divide the Ekiti State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria. We appeal to those promoting these divisions to sheathe their swords in the interest of the party and its ardent followers. We cannot forget so soon the struggle and what it cost us to get to where we are today. We owe it to the Ekiti people and all democrats in the country to sustain and protect this hard won democracy. All true progressives must rise up in defence of individual freedom and promotion of democratic values. We shall overcome for the good of all. Thank You.

Signed- Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

The claim of marginalisation as in the most cases of marginalisation pushed and politicized by the political elites, is at its heart very self-serving. We only hear of marginalisation when regional champions/elite are excluded from access to the spoils of the Federal center. The real marginalisation is of the under-privileged non-elites whose dreams are killed, and resources plundered by the ruling elite. This category of people abound in all the regions!

Politics › Is Removing Immunity Clause The Solution? by takedat(op):
Laws are never passed by emotions. The proposed removal of immunity clause which is geared towards checking executive lawlessness, promote responsive and responsible leadership will most likely not serve its intent and purpose in Nigeria for the following reasons:

1. Removal of immunity clause will expose the President and Governors to civil and criminal prosecution, and would impermissibly interfere with their capacity and ability to perform their constitutionally assigned functions. We cannot afford to have them distracted and their energies diverted by concern with lawsuits.

2. It will give room for those who lost at the ballot box and the pull-him-down agents to push forward fictitious petitions and open floodgate of litigation aimed at harassing and embarrassing elected public office holders.

3. If the immunity clause is removed and they are charged for criminal personal liability, they will use public funds to buy legal services. With the funds at their disposal, they can frustrate and even evade justice.

4. Removal of the immunity clause does not mean that once they are charged to court they'll immediately be impeached. A criminal trial in court can take several months or years to conclude and the accused has the right of appeal. In this way, a President or a Governor may complete his term before he is finally convicted.

5. They appointed some of the judges that will try their case(s), and the President appoints the IGP or EFCC boss that may want to prosecute him. I do not see how such a case or cases can be concluded without prejudice and bias.

6. We already have an impeachment clause in the constitution. A president or a governor can be swiftly removed from office for gross misconduct which includes the commission of a crime. Category of impeachment is not limited to abuses of official power. Impeachment process is better suited to the task because it is fast and efficient. It is faster than a criminal trial and there is no appeal from the verdict of the assembly except if removed unconstitutionally. Once the executive is removed, he can then be prosecuted and his removal will facilitate effective political administration of the state and place the political system on a healthy course. Surely, the arguments for the removal of immunity clause has already been trumped by the impeachment clause.

7. How many of the former governors who have lost their immunity have we been able to prosecute and convict years after leaving office?

Instead of removing immunity, we should be clamoring for real separation of powers between the three tiers of government. Separation of powers is not absolute; it is instead qualified by the doctrine of checks and balances. Legislative docility, a dependent judiciary and toothless anti graft agencies are the real problems. These institutions need to run effectively before we can totally check the excesses of the executive. We can also allow them to complete their term in office before making them account for their errors of omission or commission. To wound them by a criminal proceeding while in office is to hamstring the operation of the whole government apparatus.
Politics › Re: Presidency Rejects Removal Of Immunity Clause by takedat(m):
HNosegbe: The immunity clause should be removed for criminal cases only (like corruption-related charges). It should however be retained for civil cases.

It's not in the interest of the country for governors and presidents to have to spend public funds (as they undoubtedly will) hiring the best lawyers to defend them from all sorts of flimsy charges.

If corruption is the problem, then immunity should be removed for corruption cases only.
If we agree that the immunity clause be modified so that political office holders are not immune from criminal process or indictment in office, at what point will the executive be impeached? Is it while the criminal proceedings are going on against him or after his trial and conviction?

Obviously, it cannot be during the pendency of criminal proceedings because an accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty. An impeachment cannot proceed until the court holds the person criminally liable. A criminal trial in court can take years to conclude and the accused has a right to appeal. In this way, a president or governor may complete his term before he is finally convicted. So if we cannot use the impeachment clause which in itself trumps all the argument for removal of immunity clause, why not wait till they are out of office before initiating any criminal process against them?

My argument is, removal(partial or total) of immunity clause will interfere with the discharge of their duties and we cannot afford to have them distracted or their energies diverted by concern with lawsuits especially with fictitious petitions and floodgate of litigation from pull-him-down agents. The main reason why we want to remove their immunity is already defeated by the argument above ie impeachment clause already serves as a check against abuse of power, misuse of public funds etc. Legislative docility is the real problem and what we should resist, once the legislative arm is awake to its statutory duties of scrutinizing the executive from recklessness, impunity and profligacy in office we will not have the problems of debating whether to remove the clause or not. Impeachment should precede prosecution no matter what! Laws are never passed by emotions Even though there is the need to curtail the excesses of the executive arm.

We run a "Monetized Democracy" so do not expect saints and perfectionist to form political parties big enough to challenge the PDP for now. PDP needs competition, and As long as there is competition between the two parties(National and State level), both parties will gradually evolve into ideologically based parties.
