U S Navy Destroyer USS Nitze Harassed by Iranian Patrol Boats https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZIA3k1HHqA Yikes — Iranian Boats Play Chicken With U.S. Warships Now think about what this tactic would look like if they weren’t playing around by ROBERT BECKHUSEN Another few sunny days in the Persian Gulf, and another several days of scarily-close encounters between Iranian boats and U.S. warships. And this time they provoked an American ship into firing warning shots. That’s not a reassuring series of events at a time when Saudi Arabia — a U.S. ally — and Iran fight devastating proxy wars in Syria and Yemen. It’s only a little more than a year since the landmark deal between Iran and the West, while still shaky, halted Iran’s drive to develop nuclear weapons. If the incidents in August are any indication, relations between the United States have a very long way to go before they get any better. Tehran, or at least elements within the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, seem to prefer it that way. The first incident on Aug. 23 occurred when four IRGC boats — weapons uncovered — came within 300 yards of the destroyer USS Nitze, which fired off flares to warn the boats away, in the Strait of Hormuz. Video of the incident is below: The next day, Iranian boats harassed American ships on three separate occasions. The first incident on Aug. 24 occurred when three Iranian vessels approached the patrol vessels USS Tempest and USS Squall — and crossed the Tempest’s bow back and forth three times. A few hours later, an Iranian boat played chicken with Tempest by speeding toward her head on. “This situation presented a drastically increased risk of collision, and the Iranian vessel refused to safely maneuver in accordance with internationally recognized maritime rules of the road, despite several request and warnings via radio, and visual and audible warnings from both U.S. ships,” U.S. Fifth Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Bill Urban told USNI News. That’s when Squall fired three .50-caliber warning shots, which apparently convinced the Iranian boat to turn around. But that wasn’t the end of it. The same boat later harassed the destroyer USS Stout. Close encounters between Iranian patrol boats and U.S. warships are hardly unprecedented. The Iranian navy often shadows American ships as a means to signal strength and to keep its sailors steeled for a potential armed conflict. In July, Gen. Joseph Votel — commander of all U.S. forces in the Middle East — got a first-hand look while sailing on board the amphibious transport USS New Orleans when five Iranian boats came within 500 yards. And on Aug. 15, IRGC vessels “launched rockets in exercises a few miles away from two U.S. Navy ships,” Defense News reported. This isn’t to suggest that a naval conflict between the United States and Iran is likely, just that Tehran finds it useful to train its sailors for that possibility. And what better way to prepare for war than to scope out and engage in high-risk maneuvers in close proximity to U.S. warships? The biggest potential downside is that someone — an Iranian or American commander — may miscalculate. The fact that the most recent set of incidents provoked an American ship into firing warning shots shows just how close both sides can come to igniting a flashpoint. |
Inferiority is one thing affecting Nigerians. Who cares even if their umbrella is made of paper? Useless thread. |

Why The F-22 and F-35 Stealth Fighters Will Revolutionize War in the Sky In Len Deighton’s book Fighter, he describes the tactics used by the outnumbered English fighter pilots defending against German Luftwaffe bombers in the Battle of Britain: The professional fighter pilot gained height as quickly as he was permitted, and treasured possession of that benefit. He hoped always to spot the enemy before they spotted him and hurried to the sun side of them to keep himself invisible. He needed superior speed, so he positioned himself for a diving attack, and he would choose a victim at the very rear of the enemy formation so that he did not have to fly through their gunfire. He would hope to kill on that first dive. If he failed, the dedicated professional would flee rather than face an alerted enemy. Deighton’s point was that the best British pilots used hit-and-run tactics emphasizing surprise and speed in order to minimize losses, rather than dogfighting at length with enemies after those advantages were spent. These tactics permitted small numbers of British fighters to tackle the aerial armadas of the German Luftwaffe. Obviously, technology has changed dramatically since 1940. While contemporary fighters can now go more than five times as fast as the Spitfires and Messerschmitt fighters of the Battle of Britain, two new technologies promise to make hit-and-run tactics more effective: stealth technology and long-range air-to-air missiles. Stealth and Its Limits While virtually any plane can be equipped to fire long-range missiles, stealth airframes are built using radar-absorbent materials and engineered precisely to minimize reflection of radar waves. This constrains their load-carrying abilities, as external weapons or drop tanks could increase their visibility on radar. The United States fields two stealth fighters, the F-22 Raptor and the F-35 Lightning II. Stealth planes are properly described as “Low Observable” aircraft. They are not actually undetectable, but are very hard to spot on radar. Let’s review the limits on stealth technology, and how fighter doctrine may evolve around them. Stealth aircraft are optimized to be difficult to observe on the precise X-Band radars used on modern fighters: while some radars have better resolutions than others, most will only be able to track a stealth fighter at shorter distances. An F-22 is claimed to have the radar cross section of 0.0001 square meters in certain aspect—the same as that of a marble. Low-bandwidth radars are more effective at detecting stealth aircraft. These are typically used by ground installations and ships, but also found on specialized aerial platforms such as the E-2D. However, they come with a major limitation: they can reveal only the general location of a stealth fighter and are too imprecise to be used to target missiles—though they can indicate to an X-Band radar where to look. Infra-Red Search-and Track (IRST) systems offer another means of detecting stealth aircraft, but their range is generally limited. The latest IRST system on the SU-35 has extended the range up to 50 kilometers, whereas its radar has detection range of up to 200 kilometers. Just like low-band radar, IRST doesn’t give a precise track and can’t be used to lock on weapons. Stealth fighters include features designed to minimize heat signature, but they are far from completely effective. Of course, a stealth fighter can be seen within visual range, and is vulnerable to heat-seeking missiles. To recap: stealth technology is more effective at a distance. Although there are a number of methods to detect stealth fighters at long range, they generally don’t permit weapons to lock on to them. In return, nothing prevents the stealth aircraft from firing at its opponents. Enter the beyond-visual-range (BVR) missile. Long Range Air-to-Air Missiles Around the late 1990s, a new generation of long-range radar-guided air-to-air missiles entered service, notably the AIM-120 AMRAAM and the Russian R-77. These could hit targets over 50 kilometers away. (The earlier AIM-54 Phoenix boasted even longer range but was very expensive). In subsequent decades, the range has continued to increase to well over 100 kilometers, and new types such as the European MBDA Meteor and the Chinese PL-15 continue to push the envelope of speed and range. |
Henry240:what sort of vessel does NESL has the capability to build. OPV? |
Henry240:All stealth coating need to be reapplied. Same way the Chinese made mention of picking the F22 however F22 coatings are being changed to that of F35 tho there will be no reduction in it's RCS according to the post. Picking up a stealth aircraft shouldn't be a big deal but how long it can be picked up. However there comments appear to be poorly informed as the SU-35 can also supercruise, this time at Mach 1.7. The T-50 currently/ in the interim uses the engine from the SU-35, while it's (T-50) engine is still being developed.I think the reason why f22 mach 2 capability is being talked about is not to compare the engines but to express concern on how the F22 is able to go at such speed and still remain undetected. T-50 wasn't designed to be as stealthy as the f22 so cruising at 1.7 shouldn't be a big deal. |
Henry240:The big deal is that a F22 a stealth aircraft can cruise at mach 2 and still keep it's stealthy nature. |
misscall247:exactly. Thanks. |
misscall247:The world is getting competitive even smart work demands handwork. |
vizkiz:I feel your pain however, getting reach comes from hardwork. Look around you even in this harsh economy work damn hard, feel the pain. I am not talking about digging well. If you are an engineering graduate you can shake the world and leave a huge impact. Your success door with open. You need to believe in something tho. God, Karma anything. Just believe and never give up. |
babadoo:It's Louis Edet house. |
Nice post! |
God help us. The nation is really confused and the biggest problem now is no one cares about the mass. The issue is now like the government saying let them drink water they can't die . As far they are alive there's nothing to worry about. As for the number of cars that reduced. Innoson should kindly bring out new cars with classic designs . Her designs should be able to compete with international brand. Nigerians are conscious when it comes to classic things. Anyway to all entrepreneurs out there, this is your time to be successful. Take advantage of the ecconomy issue. |
Henry240:Yea thanks! He is sure going to make alot of money from that. Nigerian military is stepping up it's game on technology nowadays. I just hope the military can step up her game by adding capabilities such as Electronic warfare; radar jamming. Us navy started using the AN/ALQ 99 since 1972 and this is 2016 Nigeria should have Electronic attack capability already. We can make use of this technology by jamming remote controlled IED therefore reducing the risk of troops convoy being hit. I had succes developing a jammer that Works within some bandwidth by saturating the receiver with white noise therefore making the receiver confused. However with the resources I had I was only able to operate on low frequencies . So I just relaxed the project till the school grant me access to some labs. Hopefully before this year runs out I will be able to continue. |
Henry240:It's more like an agreement for now but looks like something that's will yield a good result. You can check out some of his posts on twitter @TillerCyrus Yea mine is electronic countermeasure. He makes and I destroy lol ![]() |
Henry240:No. It's a project signed between Defence hq and one of the ASO villa demo day finalist. The man has worked with different defence companies and governments such as Turkish alselan Was chanced to have some chat with him.

andrewza:Suppressive fire doesn't look like something that will work there . Two convoys down already and the terrorist had to keep firing. That convoy was hit already except they were able to get out, suppressive fire wouldn't work. The Humvee action shows cowardice. I expected those in the vehicle hit to disembark and start something suppressive but seems they were locked in there. |
Henry240:YEA humvee |
giles14:That was a damn ambush. What were you expecting out there? Return fire while they are still trying to get out of the vehicle? The terrorist had to suppress them with RPG's. |
Vikkie14:Yea. Good movie. watched it weeks ago. |
africaken254:AC-130 is something really crazy. |
Modified Escort Jamming. When: Thursday 25 August 2016, 02:00 PM Anyone else attending in here?

byrron:NAF Mi-17 use Rocket not bombs. |
Cannonleo:Maybe but the ISR shows armed. |
Henry240:Good then. Just waiting patiently for the arrival. ![]() |
mamabomboy:scrap? You called mi-35 a scrap? Mr man go and sit down. |
byrron:Nigeria mi-17 isn't equipped with ISR. That video was probably taken by a CH3 UCAV. |
craziebone:I will prefer a camo paint for the JF17's. Like israeli Airforce paint scheme. |
Henry240:Why did NAF make use of helicopters when our fighters could have delivered a better damage especially on those buildings to increase enemy casualty rate. |
