Nope, it wasnt. The aim was to stop NATO expansion and let Ukraine know they can never be allowed to join NATO. Russia and Ukraine must have reached a deal for Russia to pull back. Remember ukrainian ambassador to UK said Ukraine may drop NATO ambitions if it averts war.

Imagine Canada or Mexico becoming an ally of Russia to be used as a military outpost against the US, US no go gree nau. But they want to do it to Russia through Ukraine, a country that shares historical ties with Russia.

Very valid reason for Russia to be angry.
