Anti-graft agency alleges plot against it by Rivers government

Farida Waziri, chairman, EFCC

While the Rivers State commissioner for information, Ibim Semenitari, on Tuesday, denied an alleged planned protest against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) sponsored by the state government, the people of the state on Wednesday staged a demonstration against the anti-graft agency.

Thousands of delegates from the 23 local government areas in the state, wearing T-shirts with anti-EFCC inscriptions and placards marched from Isaac Boro Park to the EFCC’s Port Harcourt office axis and back to the Government House to express their displeasure over the recent arrest of state government’s officials by the agency.

Some of the inscriptions on the T-shirts and placards borne by the protesters read: ‘EFCC Please Obey the Law’, ‘WE will not be Intimidated, We will defend our state against EFCC’, “EFCC and Farida should Obey the Rule of Law’, EFCC should leave Rivers State alone.” Reacting to the allegation, the information commissioner, Ibim Semenitari said, “We are not aware of any protest against EFCC officials or its zonal office in Port Harcourt. Governor Amaechi is the chief executive officer of Rivers State and will not be involved in what can lead to the breakdown of law and order. If there is a plan by some people to protest, it may be a private initiative.

“It is laughable that anybody or organisation can accuse Rivers government of planning arson or attack on EFCC’s officials. We cannot do that. The Rivers State governor and government are responsible.”

Meanwhile, the recent brawl between the state government and the anti-graft agency started when the commission arrested three local government officials in the state over alleged diversion of N12 billion local government funds about two weeks ago.

EFCC had arrested the three officials when it could not find the five commissioners and three council chairmen said to be directly linked with the allegation, despite combing their ministries and local government areas.

In reaction to the arrest, the state governor, Chibuike Amaechi, while declaring open an information summit held in Port Harcourt on Thursday, September 2, 2010, faulted EFCC’s action, citing an existing court injunction which barred the commission from investigating the state officials.

i am not interested in who the next president will be but my worries are more on the means by which is selected.
in other countries where u have leaders with genuine ambitions, they will stay away from active politics when they leave office but what do we have here? a group of criminals who move from one post to the other even at 200 yrs old just to die stealing.
let pdp make the ground smooth for every contestant so that the masses will have a say in who will rule them.
No one ever said that Jonathan must win, but IBB shall be stopped at all cost. He will never smell Aso rock again. Nigerian's are not slaves or demented people that keep taking whips and keep quiet. IBB has done his worst. He can either choose to retire and enjoy his loot, since he is being protected by the government from prosecution. Or expose himself to being treated like an animal. I hope he doesnt complain when he does. And there is freedom of speech. All contestants for presidency should be ready to have their lives scrutinized. If you cant stand the heat, then get the hell out of the kitchen. As for vicknesh, i am just showing off his lies and useless propaganda. IBB cannot be Nigeria's president, we cannot afford it.

S’South govs won’t betray Jonathan — Amaechi
By Niyi Odebode, Olamilekan Lartey, Olusola Fabiyiand Chukwudi Akasike
Wednesday, 15 Sep 2010

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi on Tuesday said South-South governors would not betray President Goodluck Jonathan, by accepting a vice-presidential slot from any candidate.

Amaechi, in an interview with one of our correspondents in Port Harcourt, said that South-South governors had committed themselves to making sure that Jonathan was elected President in 2011.

Amaechi’s colleagues in the South-South are Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan (Delta); Senator Liyel Imoke (Cross River); Mr. Timipre Sylva (Bayelsa) and Mr. Adams Oshiomhole (Edo).

The Rivers State governor was reacting to reports in some national newspapers (excluding THE PUNCH) that some South-South governors had entered into a discussion with two Northern presidential aspirants — Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and Alhaji Atiku Abubakar — on the possibility of two governors from the South-South being picked as vice-presidential candidates.

The reports had stated that Babangida and Abubakar were determined to choose their running mates from the zone (South-South) to undermine the ambition of Jonathan, who hails from the zone.

Amaechi, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Blessing Wikina, said, “We are not in discussion with anybody on the issue. All we are doing is to work hard and ensure that President Jonathan wins the presidential election.

”Rule us out of any kind of national politics. Rule us out of the vice-presidential position because we are not part of it and we are not interested in it.

The position of the South-South governors on the need to support President Jonathan is clear and it is binding on all of us.

Insisting that he was not interested in the vice-presidency, Amaechi said that he had a four- year mandate from the people of Rivers State, which he was bent on completing.

The Rivers governor was, however, absent from a pro-Jonathan rally in Port Harcourt, organised by political groups in the Niger Delta on Tuesday.

Also, none of the governor’s aides was at the event, though the Rivers State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, said Amaechi had travelled to the United States.

The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mr. Nathan Egba, who also reacted to the reports, said those behind the “latest kite” would not succeed.

“We are resolute in our support for President Jonathan. We are committed to his success at the PDP primaries and the general elections,” he said.

THE PUNCH had learnt on Monday evening that Northern politicians had started searching for a prominent indigene of the South-South that would be made the running mate of a consensus Northern presidential candidate.

The politicians were said to have held two separate meetings in Kaduna, Kaduna State and Minna, Niger State, towards achieving the purpose.

The meetings, according to one of the politicians, were called to decide which of the six states in the South-South would produce the running mate.

Rivers Govt shuns Jonathan’s rally in Port Harcourt

By Aniefiok Macauley (Uyo) and Godwin Egba (Port Harcourt)

A rally organised in Port Harcourt on Tuesday to flesh up Goodluck Jonathan’s Presidential ambition was well attended, just that those who did were mainly the opponents of Governor Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State.

Amaechi and all his aides stayed away.

However, another campaign gig in Uyo witnessed both a massive turn out and the adoption of Jonathan by South South leaders.

The attendees in Port Harcourt included members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) whose positions have been re-allocated to others, elected members whose positions are marked for replacement, loyalists of two former Governors, and ethnic opposition groups.

Members of these camps, who may have formed a coalition of about 50 groups in Rivers, took Port Harcourt by storm with a boisterous rally at the Isaac Boro Park.

A source said the boycott by government officials may be connected with the presence at the rally of many of the anti-Amaechi members of the PDP.

“I think their absence was not unexpected given the animosity between the organisers and the Amaechi government,” the source added.

Among the mammoth crowd were Ijaw leader Edwin Clark, former Aviation Minister, Alabo Graham-Douglas, former PDP Governorship candidate, Sergeant Awuse, and National Coordinator of Youths support Groups for Jonathan, Chibudom Nwuche.

They also included former Governor Celestine Omehia; former House of Representatives Deputy Speaker, Austin Okpara; former Senator Cyrus Nunieh; Ijaw activist Ankio Briggs; and former Commissioners.

Clark, who chaired the event, said the aim of the solidarity rally was to expose the lie that Rivers people are undecided in their support for Jonathan’s run.

Graham-Douglas traced the history of the Southern minorities’ political friendship with the North and the region’s economic marginalisation when the pillars of Nigeria’s economy were cocoa, palm oil, and groundnut.

He recalled that God mercifully smiled on the South South when oil was struck in Oloibiri, Bayelsa State in 1956 but regretted that “despite the region’s oil wealth that oiled and continues to oil the national economy, the region and its people have been consigned to political exclusion from national leadership poverty and lack of development.”

He said there has been no government in Nigeria since 1959 without the backing of the minorities, especially from Rivers and Bayelsa.

“Instead of our historical allies to support us this time, they chose to work against it, is this attitude fair?” he wondered.

Awuse insisted that Jonathan has the right to vie for the Villa.

“Jonathan is like a co-pilot in a plane where the pilot suddenly died. Will the co-pilot allow the plane to crash?” he asked.

Awuse urged Nigerians to allow Jonathan to lead the country for the next four years.

Omehia, who drew standing ovation as he rose to speak, implored the people to keep organising solidarity rallies, and all the delegates to cast their votes for Jonathan in the primaries

The crowd defied a heavy rain and water logged ground to demonstrate their support for Jonathan. (no one who was paid will do this grin)

The other rally in Uyo Township Stadium drew people from political parties who said they endorsed Jonathan after consultative meetings on his national acceptability.

Clark, who also attended the second rally, reassured that Jonathan will run and that Governor Godswill Akpabio and the entire people of Akwa Ibom support him 100 per cent.

He said the crowd at the event showed that the people of the South South are solidly behind Jonathan, and “when we took the decision about five days ago in Abuja, I told my people that Akwa Ibom State is a fertile ground for us to have the rally.”

Others present at the rally included Vice President Namadi Sambo and Akpabio, who said the Johnathan/Sambo ticket is the best thing to happen to Nigeria as a nation.

Sambo added that Jonathan is fully committed to the transformation of the Niger Delta through the construction of the East-West Road to attract foreign investors. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Pro-Jonathan rally flops in Lafia
Monday, 13 September 2010 00:47 Hir Joseph, Lafia
E-mail Print PDF

The first rally meant to garner support for President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 presidential race in Nasarawa State was greeted with disappointment at the weekend.

The rally was organised in the state capital, Lafia by one of the many Pro-Jonathan groups, National Democratic Youth Movement for Good Governance (NDYMGG).

The Abuja based NDYMGG, sought audience with Governor Aliyu Akwe Doma by noon on Saturday, according to its programme, but the governor refused to receive the procession.

Chikat Ishaya Lekshak, NDYMGG’s national co-ordinator said his group received the governor’s attitude with shock. “The reason we chose to come to Nasarawa was because Doma was among governors who openly declared support for Jonathan, only for us to be disappointed”, Chikat told newsmen at the parade ground where the procession terminated.

When contacted, Nasarawa State Commissioner for Information, Mamman Alakayi, said the group never wrote to inform Governor Doma of the visit to him during the Sallah celebration when he received several visitors.

According to him, the group didn’t even seek permission to hold any rally in the state capital.

Doubting the authenticity of the group, the commissioner said: “There are over 1000 groups claiming to work for the president. we don’t know which is authentic.”

About two weeks ago, Governor Doma had led a section of leaders of the state including his predecessor, Abdullahi Adamu and the minister of state for information, Labaran Maku, as well as the leadership of the PDP in the state to the Presidency where he promised support for the president’s bid to contest in 2011.

Meanwhile, though the group was not received by Doma, it still went ahead with the scanty procession, singing and dancing along major roads in Lafia, till the rally ended at the parade ground. The visit to Government House was expected to receive the governor’s blessing and kick-start the rally, but the governor’s refusal to meet with the leaders appeared to have slowed down their spirit.

The group’s coordinator also expressed disappointment with the reception accorded the procession in Lafia, saying the rally was greeted rather with posters of General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), another presidential aspirant.

Jonathan’s posters which were pasted on public installations including road signs were superimposed with those of IBB, to the disappointment of the rally.
Vicknesh, your supposed nonsense does not have a link attached it it. You sound like a drowning man. And how does anything occuring in lafia mean anything? The people probably have other things to do, if they were not PAID to come to the rally. Most Nigerian's are hustling up and down for their daily bread. Jonathan does not need to pay supporters like your sponsor whose thugs are fighting not too far away from eagle's square

These things happen around the world and may not be as uncommon as you think in Nigeria.People may not hear of such cases because the police can't do their jobs.If a child has mental health problems or is depressed,Nigerians will hide their 'shame' in their house.I read a story not too long ago about a little boy of 12, killing himself, his mother and two sisters. He planned it so well he wrote an 'I'm sorry' note which investigators found.Am sure if he didn't write that note people will think it was an accident or a murderer came into their home.So this is very possible.A sick or disturbed child can be very dangerous. They act first and think after.

Governors shun IBB’s presidential declaration
By Niyi Odebode and Fidelis Soriwei
Thursday, 16 Sep 2010

Twenty-five out of the 28 Peoples Democratic Party governors and most stalwarts of the party on Wednesday boycotted former military President Ibrahim Babangida’s declaration of his intention to contest the 2011 presidential election.

The three governors that attended the event at the Eagle Square in Abuja were Dr. Aliyu Babangida (Niger); Alhaji Mamudu Shinkafi (Zamfara) and Alhaji Murtala Nyako (Adamawa).

Most of Babangida’s closest associates and members of the PDP National Working Committee did not attend the declaration that was characterised by unruly behaviour by the supporters of the former military dictator. The event started at 11am.

The supporters, who included those from Ondo, Abia, Ekiti and Edo states, accused their leaders of bringing them to Abuja to suffer.

In spite of the fact that the PDP National Executive Committee meeting was shifted from 10am to 2:50pm because of Babangida’s declaration, many other prominent politicians from the six geopolitical zones also shunned the ceremony.

The few notable politicians in attendance included a former President of the Senate, Chief Ken Nnamani; an ex-Rivers State Governor, Dr. Peter Odili; a former-governor of Niger State, Abdulkhadir Kure; a former governor of Nassarawa State, Alhaji Abdullahi Adamu; and an ex-Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Ghali Na’Abba.

The top associates of the former military ruler who were absent were his kinsman and former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.); his former deputy, Admiral Augustus Aikhomu (retd); a former chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Admiral Mike Akhigbe.

The poor attendance was such that even the former military President, in his address, lamented that not all the people who were invited for the ceremony turned up.

Besides the aspirant, who limped to the podium to deliver his address around 1am, other speakers at the event were Nnamani and Na’Abba.

Their speeches, our correspondents, observed, did not elicit much reactions from the crowd.

Babangida suffers from radiculopathy, a condition caused by the compression of a nerve in the spine. Its symptoms include pain, numbness, tingling and weakness along the course of the nerve.

After the ceremony, some of the Babangida supporters from outside Abuja were seen quarreling over funds that ought to have been given to them through their coordinators.

The angry supporters said that they had also been persuaded to attend an earlier pro – IBB function in Ibadan, Oyo State, without being paid.

They added that they were promised that the money meant for them for their presence in the Ibadan rally would be given to them in Abuja.

They alleged that they had spent all their money on hotel accommodation and feeding and vowed that they would not allow their coordinators to leave the venue of the ceremony without settling the issue of their entitlements.

One of the delegates, Idowu Roberts, said, “We were promised N6,000 when we went to Ibadan. But we did not get a kobo. Our leaders told us that IBB did not give them any money. They told us that the money would be paid together with the one we would receive in Abuja.

“We arrived in Abuja yesterday (Tuesday). I have paid N6,000 for hotel and spent N3,000 on feeding. They are telling us again that IBB has not paid them. They said they would forward our names to the general.”

But as Babangida declared his ambition, a group, the Democratic Alliance for Good Governance, said that the former military dictator had a hidden agenda.

The group, in posters pasted in Maitama, Gariki, Eagles Square and other parts of Abuja, warned that a vote for Babangida would be a vote for tenure elongation.

Some of the posters read “Different faces of IBB: The evil genius strikes;” “Do not be deceived, Maradona, the actor is at it again;” and “Nigerians beware, the military are back, again.” grin cheesy

Distinguished Gentlemen of the press

TOGETHER, WE CAN BUILD OUR NATION

Why do I want to be President? Firstly, it is my constitutional right to do so. I have a fundamental right as a bona-fide Nigerian to vote and be voted for in an election. I am only exercising my franchise. Secondly, my previous government was a military one. I have seen over the years that many things could be done better. I have also spent many years to understudy democratic leadership in several countries (where our billions are stashed) and have mastered the art of democracy and learnt how to apply it better under our Nigerian conditions.

On June 12: Severally and with great remorse too, I have taken responsibility as a true leader for the actions and decisions of the military administration that I led. The annulment of the June 12 election is one of the ugly spots one has to live with. It was a collective decision taken after series of consultations with several stakeholders. Even though ours was a military regime, yet we governed as a team, majority decision always carried the day. I know that a day will come when Nigerians will forgive our regime because we are a godly nation that embraces the culture of forgiveness. After all, I introduced the era of new-breed politicians. In addition, the electoral formula we used is to date considered the most effective in the country. I am referring to "Option a 4" and the establishment of two political parties. I am neither an enemy of democracy nor averse to the success of the candidates that contested the said elections. I knew both Bashorun MKO Abiola and Alhaji Bashir Tofa. Years after the annulment, I, in concert with other patriots, conscious of the geopolitical divides in the country, tried to assuage the feelings of the aggrieved people by supporting the candidacy of my senior military officer former President Olusegun Ogasanjo (Mistake Number 1), who in our estimation has an unshakeable faith in the unity of the country and who hails from the same State with Bashorun MKO Abiola. Who Tha Fugg Killed MKO? Answer that IBB

OKIGBO REPORT: Many mis-informed critics have been using the Okigbo Panel Report in the most blindly, controversial and distorted manner lacking fairness and morality. They dwell so much on a purported $12.4billion Gulf Oil Windfall. Let me state categorically that the Okigbo Panel was never a trial court for me ( grin, nor be Naija we dey?).

ON DELE GIWA: For the umpteenth time, I wish to state that, I did not murder Dele Giwa( lipsrsealed). In addition, no agent or agency of government was found guilty of this heinous act by the law courts. I am a man of great faith in God and I believe in the sanctity of life. My discipline as a military commander also does not condone the killing of defenseless innocent people( lipsrsealed). Aside, court judgments have vindicated me on this. Some of them were by the esteemed Justice Candido Johnson (investigating his esteemness(sic)) who quashed the allegation for want of evidence ( wink) by the prosecutors. Nevertheless, perception, often repeated, no matter how untrue, becomes very hard to obliterate.

Finally, my humble upbringing does not give room for one to join issues with juniors (all juniors to IBB cannot question him) nor insult or disrespect elders. Better still, I do not quarrel with anyone, not even my peers. To all I accord mutual respect. I grew up with these ideals. However, a treasured attribute of mine has been grossly abused and misinterpreted by my critics. All thanks to Allah that my faith, Islam, is about a total submission to the will of the Almighty and abhorrence of oppression of others (A true leader does not mention his particular faith, when contesting in a diverse environment. he is vindicating himself to Northerners and muslims).

I guess you will find time in your quiet moments to reflect on these issues as you engage the public on a regular basis through your news report, articles, editorial comments and opinions. A formidable Press is surely the hub that wields together the tracking spokes in the wheel of national development. May your pens never run dry of indelible ink! On a lighter note, I think the press should also give our regime some credit for liberalizing the space for the media, particularly the ownership of private television, radio stations and universities. God bless you all.

Long live Democracy Shariaocrazy, PDPocrazy.

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

General Ibrahim B. Babangida, GCFR

RomanceRe: Why Lesbian Don't Want Man ? by TewMuch: 7:49pm On Sep 15, 2010
Am sorry but Inked comes across as a lesbian. Been reading threads where she posted and once she has to discuss sexual orientation, she is so defensive about lesbians. Even very excited to get in touch with Gaygirl on a previous thread. Inked, just jump out of the closet. Its o.k. This is a faceless forum and no one knows you. I am expecting a thread with "Surprise Inked_Nerd is a lesbian". Mr. Cork seems on the ball about you. wink

MOBO444:
My cousin just told his Black Edo state girl friend of 8 years that he will marry her but she won’t join him in America, he will rent for her a one bed room apartment in Ugbowo, Benin city, were his family can monitor her and he don’t want her to join him in California, America, he presently live and work in California as a senior medical assistant, and our family has also advice him not to take her to the USA, we all know the rubbish Black Nigeria women do when they get to the United State of America.

She can make babies for him, she can have a car to herself maybe in 3 years time, and he will also send her money for her upkeeps from time to time, he will also send her good designers cloths from time to time, but he won’t take her to America, his family will also keep an Eagle eye on her so she don’t do any smart move in Benin, Edo state. Nigeria women who join their husband in America always take the men through hell and back, so many Nigeria women have died in different state in America killed by angry and betrayed Nigeria husband, The Black Nigeria women do stuff like arrest their husband, milk his money and send to family back home, even build houses in their villages without the husband knowledge, some later even divorce the husband and claim his houses and property in America, this is also an eye opener to all Nigeria Black brother and the men have to be wise.

The girls (Kehinde) parent and family are not too happy, but they don’t have a choice as my cousin can decide to quit the marriage plan and take his plenty dollars back to America with him and let their so called Black daughter roam the street of Benin, Edo state  to start all over again, her family better not dare us, ok.
Kehinde, the black Edo state girl.
@ OP its either you have a mental problem, you like attention or you dont know squat about Nigeria. Did you look up kehinde randomly and edo state randomlyhuh huh

Kehinde is most likely not an Edo State name (Guess again), and is also most likely black because Nigeria is about 96% black arsehole.

You fail with your retarded thread. Go check into a mental hospital for your safety, and get rid of your racial issues. You've been exposed, you are obviously neither black nor Nigerian.
