For people in that category, it’s a game changer. Almost all Steamdeck sales I’ve seen are in the 450k range, and that was months ago before the exchange rate cratered.

And just in case anyone tries to spin this as a ‘goodwill gesture’, it was Ukrainian counterattacks and sound strategic thinking that forced Russia into this.

Basically Ukraine telegraphed and announced a counter attack in Kherson, used that to lure many Russian troops to the left bank of the Dneipr River and to reinforce Kherson city itself, then used HIMARS to sever the bridges for heavy logistics to the left bank. And then proceeded to use precision artillery and HIMARS strikes to destroy a staggering amount of Russian ammo caches in the region, leaving Russian troops with limited support and dwindling ammo.

Sound decision for Russia to withdraw to more defensive positions across the River, but they’ll have to abandon some equipment. And their crossing will no doubt be challenged with artillery harassment.

A massive reputation blow for Russia, to be sure. And Russian military bloggers are taking it very hard. But at least it will preserve the lives of tens of thousands of their veteran troops

Nah. Trying to join NATO was a wise and expected move. You forget what happened. Ukrainian public opinion had never been pro joining NATO before. They only started pushing for it after Russia invaded and annexed Crimea in 2014, then turned around to start a Civil War in the east.
And when Ukraine was defeating the separatists, Russia sent their own troops in disguise and drove out the Ukrainian forces from much of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Fear of Russian aggression is what has been driving multiple ex Soviet bloc to run to NATO.

Zelensky was pushing for a settlement that would guarantee lasting peace for Ukraine and was willing to put neutrality on the table.

Not only did the Russians not listen, they actually went after the TV stations that aired that interview in Russia. And the Russian official position was that Ukraine would have to disband their military and change their leadership. Essentially accept perpetual Russian subjugation. Obviously terms Ukraine could not accept.

And Russia rejected All reasonable negotiated settlements in the early months of the war...
