Funny how GEJ happily takes credit for anything positive from the Yar'Adua administration yet tries to convince us that he was blissfully unaware when Alams was pilfering tens of billions of Naira.
Computers › Re: Why Is Internet Access So Expensive In Nigeria? by texazzpete(m): 6:58am On Sep 07, 2011
I wish people would stop quoting 'Infrastructure' as an excuse. The 3G HSDPA transmitter is mounted on existing Telecom towers which are already powered up to cater to the GSM crowd. There is very little incremental cost for power that these Telcos incur.

The simple truth is that the Telcos are greedy as hell, which was why MTN just a few years ago would buy 3G modems from Huawei in bulk for as low as $30 per unit and then sell same to Nigerians for 25K.

One moment we are told that the problem is Political and is being driven by those who lost the elections or who lost political power.
The next minute they tell us that Boko Haram are true religious terrorists who have been under observation since 2007.

Abeg you people should make up your minds!

2. How's jean foreign. Is it the material or what? Whats it made of?
1. Many African tribes have facial marks. You're Igbo, the Igbos have tribal marks. Will you fail to scarify your kids with them?
2. Is Jeans your traditional wear? Will anyone beat you if you wear lace or brocade cloth everyday?

Quick question: Are you also suspicious of Africans with no Facial tribal marks?
2. Are you also suspicious of Africans who wear 'foreign' clothes like Jeans?

Finally, if you believe these names you quoted have no 'personal' meaning, you're beyond hope.
People that say a name means little should go to places like Ireland , wales and Scotland where Celtic tribes reside and note how schiobhain, Aodhan(Aiden), màire(Mary), Eibhilin( Eileen) are tribal cultural names with their English versions alongside. You can really anger a Celtic person by pronouncing or spelling their names in an English way trust me I grew up in Ireland and I've seen people take it very personal. Intact more kids are receiving very gaelic names to honour the culture.
Everyone knows a lot of the Irish harbor an ancient hatred for the English after centuries of oppression. Why give this flawed sample as an example?

folahann:
Interesting, very interesting indeed.
Yes, having an English or Biblical (Hebrew/Jewish) name doesn't necessarily decrease  African someone is.
But I think we have to maintain our tradition of naming people our cultural names though I'm ok with names like James, Peter, Esther cos they are biblical. But names like Richard, Jessica, Jennifer, Ernest, Clement, Henry, Collins, Anita,Tracy, Herbert etc have their origin to be Welsh, English or French, these are native name of people from somewhere else.
This doesn't make any sense. Why is it ok to give children Hebrew names but suddenly becomes Haram to give children names with German, English or french origin? What makes them different because they are in the Bible?

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE. ARE YOU ALL DAFT? SINCE WHEN DID MIGHT BECOME RIGHT? THE MILITARY IS CONTEMPLATING KILLING HUMAN BEINGS AT WILL, AND YOU ALL ARE OPENING TEETH TO CONGRATULATE THEM! ITS SHOCKING! MAYBE WHEN THEY HAVE ELIMINATED SOME OF YOUR RELATIVES THEN EYES WILL OPEN.
WE LIVE IN A DEMOCRACY WHERE THE RULE OF LAW SHLD BE PARAMOUNT. THIS IS NOT IRAQ OR AFGHANISTAN O, IT IS silly FOR THE NIGERIAN ARMY TO EVEN OPENLY DECLARE SUCH HORRIFIC AGENDA. THAT IS TANTAMOUNT TO GENOCIDE AND CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY. NO BODY HAS THE RIGHT TO TAKE ANY OTHER PERSON'S LIFE, EXCEPT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE RULE OF LAW.
IF THIS KIND OF STATEMENT IS MADE IN ANY SANE AND CIVILISED SOCIETY, MANY PPLE WILL LOSE THEIR JOBS.
I STILL CANT BELIEVE Y'ALL ARE APPLAUDING THEM, FOR SHOOTING ON SIGHT! HOW MANY BOKO HARAM MEMBERS DO YOU SEE ON THE STREET? THEY JUST WANT TO POUR THEIR AGGRESSION ON INNOCENT LIVES.
Please educate these half-wits here.
'Shoot-on-sight' is illegal as hell! What happened to 'innocent until proven guilty'? People are here cheering on the plan to gun down people without much ado, in essence giving these uncouth soldiers a License to Kill?

I guess when it comes down to it, many people here are really not that much different from the Boko Haram murderers.

Nobody's saying that bearing a native name makes you more African than someone else. The point is that many Nigerians look down on their native names. So, to then they think they're more superirior or enlightened if they go by an oyibo name.
You and your cohorts have made a blanket statement, condemning use of non-native names as if ALL Nigerians who use them do so because of some 'inferiority complex'. It's a brainless thing to generalize, sorry.

afam4eva:
Having an indegenoug name is just a way of showing how proud you're of your culture and also helps in propagating it.
We heard the same argument for the use of tribal marks before. Tell me, how many of your kids will you give tribal marks? Or if you have kids, how many have you already marked?
I suspect the answer to that is ZERO. How does hypocrisy taste?
Culture › Re: Do We Actually Need English Names by texazzpete(m): 7:06am On Sep 05, 2011
I don't know why we are arguing about this matter.
The OP and the people who support his point of view are imbecilic dolts! End of story.

Using their logic, D'Banj (doesn't use a Christian/English name) is more 'african' and 'patriotic' than Herbert Macaulay ever was.
Sani Abacha should be more revered than Nelson Mandela.

Perhaps Patrice Lumumba must have suffered from 'inferiority complex'. Ditto for Robert Mugabe.

This topic is almost as stoopid as the one last year where someone claimed all our problems in Nigeria came from the fact that the country was named by a white woman.

Princek12:
Bottom line, most people who name their children Christian names have inferiority complex and want to belong. Nothing worse than meeting a girl who is from Nigeria tell you her name is "Shemika Nwokoro" or Jessica Ogunbiyi. Be proud of your culture. Don't let the white man rub you of your identity.

And to all the mugus who say a name is not important and that people should name their children whatever name they like, check your history. A name signifies pride and cultural identity. When slaves were brought to America, the first thing the white man did was to change their African names.
Even Malcolm X retained his first name without any qualms, and he was 1000x the man you'll ever be. Which African tribe did the name 'Malcolm' originate from? Can you convince anyone that he was suffering from 'inferiority complex'?
The only positive thing about this topic is that it brings out many of the intellectual midgets on Nairaland that we may know them. I will not take you seriously on Nairaland ever again.

Culture › Re: Do We Actually Need English Names by texazzpete(m): 8:20pm On Sep 04, 2011
What an inane topic!
It is even more odious that someone's choice of name can be condemned by others. What business of you folks is it if someone decides to bear any name of his/her choosing? How does a native name make you  more Nigerian than someone with a name that foreign in origin?

If you want to be a better, more patriotic Nigerian, focus on paying your tax, obeying the law and seeking out opportunities to help your fellow man. Not to come on a public forum and try to bash others for their own choice of names.

Builder:
Hey, sorry for my grammartical disaster and spelling mistakes, i was just pissed hence the mistakes
You're 'pissed' because people who owe you no explanation have chosen to name their kids what they feel like and these same kids use the name without any issue?
I think the imbecility you and your ilk display is a far worse threat to Nigeria's future prosperity than anyone out there who chooses to call himself 'James'.

Intelligent people worry about hard facts like the fact that only about 50% of Nigerians pay their utility bills.
Imbeciles worry that someone else chooses to call himself James instead of Osahon.

Nigeria's intelligence services have confirmed meetings and dalliances between Al Qaeda elements and Boko Haram.
Suicide Bombers are being utilized for the first time in Nigeria!

Yet people are still talking about Boko Haram being a 'political tool'!

Nigerians are the best at playing the ostrich and burying their heads in sand. The sooner we treat these guys as the religious terrorists they are, the better for us all.  Who will pay a Nigerian to blow himself up for money?

it is illegal to hold someone in detention without charging them to court. If we forget the law, what makes us better than Boko Haram?

As we speak, thousands of innocent Nigerians are languishing in jail, kept in detention for no reason whatsoever.

I'm currently torn between the Nokia N8 and Blackberry Torch. I've been confused all week as per which one to buy. The N8 obviously has far more features than the blackberry torch can ever dream of (e.g. Scratch resistant "Gorilla" touchscreen, TV-out, FM transmitter, 12mp camera, USB on the go <not ordinary micro usb oh>, etc etc), but then I feel left out in the pinging craze since most of my friends and 'toastee babes' use BBs. And since BB Torch is probably the best BB and with touchscreen, I am not sure whether to go for it or settle for the outstanding but 'pingless' Nokia N8 - and they're both roughly the same price range although the BB torch is slightly more expensive for reasons I dont know. I need help before I go insane here!
If you're seriously considering buying a Torch when the next gen Blackberries are coming out, you need help grin

Jokes apart, there's no sense in buying an N8. That same price will fetch you a decent Android phone. If you really want a BB, WAIT! Get any of the new BBs coming out.
