yep
So even one as intelligent as yourself can add his voice/support to the drivel in the OP? Smh. frosbel: In any case, Islam or Sharia does not have the copyright or monopoly on interest- free banking. The function can be performed by any conventional bank that so desires. It does not have to have religious connotation or to come from a religious bank.
So, if Sanusi is not a Sharia agent and feels strongly enough about interest-free banking, all that he needs to do is give licenses or the go ahead to any number of the currently registered Nigerian banks or foreign conventional banks so willing, to add interest-free products to their banking portfolio without religious connotations, restrictions or limitations on customers.
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi maintains that Islamic banking would help tackle the problems of tobacco smoking, alcoholism, gambling and prostitution, etc. in Nigeria. In the first place, I doubt if these problems are peculiar to or worst in Nigeria. The power to make laws for and against tobacco and alcohol indulgence and commerce or the prohibition of gambling and prostitution in Nigeria is vested exclusively by the Nigerian Constitution in the National Assembly. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, does not agree with this, however.
He believes his power as the CBN Governor supersedes that of the Nigerian National Assembly and allows him to transfer the power to institutions of his choice, including banks, local or foreign, to ban trading in tobacco, alcohol, prostitution, gambling and such other ethical fixations, at least.
Sanusi Lamido Sanusi says Islamic banking focuses on financial intermediation, as opposed to innovation. Is that a virtue? Without innovations, where would the world be today? He says, the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) is financing some Fadama II projects in two Northern and one Eastern states. The Eastern state, Anambra, has since denied taking any such IDB facility. If the other two Northern states took the facilities, Yar’Adua got us into the trap.
What the IDB provided as aid, is on the average N140 million (less than a million dollars), per state. The nearly half a trillion naira allegedly stolen by Nigerian banks’ executives could have taken care of that a million fold, instead of exposing us as a country so cheaply to the ridicule of being aided with pittance, all in the effort of deviously imposing Sharia banking on Nigeria?
A country which is already a melting pot of bitter non-native religious rivalries and acrimonies, and where the Islamic fundamentalist sect, Boko Haram, with the active support of Maghreb’s Al-Qaida sects from neighbouring countries, is now throwing bombs daily, killing dozens of innocent people in public places and sackingchurches and police stations to precipitate a jihad.
The timing to introduce Sharia banking in Nigeria is, therefore, not only extremely troubling; it is an affront to the collective ambition and acumen of a people, struggling desperately to evolve a common destiny.
In October 2002 Sanusi published a paper on ‘The Hudhood Punishments in Northern Nigeria: A Muslim Criticism.’ In July 2003, he presented
“The Shari’a Debate and the Construction of a ‘Muslim’ identity in Northern Nigeria: A Critical Perspective,’ at a seminar at the university of Bayreuth in Germany. In August 2003 he presented ‘Democracy, Rights and Islam: Theory, Epistemology and the Quest for Synthesis’ at an International Conference in Abuja on Shar’ah panel and Family Law in Nigeria and in the Muslim World: A rights-Based Approach.’ These documents confirm Sanusi’s preoccupation and ambition for Nigeria.

CyberG: Your last statement is the only thing useful in your post but then, my comment had nothing to do with targets or plans. Now to the others: you apparently did not get the train of the discussion otherwise you wouldn't be jumping to wrong conclusions:
1. I am NOT a programmer. Not Nigerian programmer. Not poor.
2. Point to any research or finding that leads to the conclusion that this idea will not sell well.
3. Expensive console devkit? Well, I don't know where you live or what you do but I have them right here already -- e.g. the latest dev-kit for everything MS.
4. Nothing wrong with spending time creating a product as you would agree that anything worth while would require time, yes? Even to build a house before, even a bungalow, it could take 6 months or more and that is just something that has been done over and over. So, time and effort to create a product like this should not be a reason to not do it.
5. Games will not be meant for just "Nigerians". How many games for XBOX, PS3 and similar consoles have you successfully pirated? Again, this would not be a reason not to proceed with an idea should anyone wish to actually pursue it. See what happens when you give someone the hard-but-true feedback? they get all snooty. CyberG: 1. I am NOT a programmer. Not Nigerian programmer. Not poor. This thread is about what Nigerian programmers are working on. While i used the word 'you', i was speaking in general terms. I've seen tons of software whizzkids who spend their time coding up the Next Best Thing only for it to end up as a dismal commercial failure. if the impression you got was that I insinuated you were poor, I apologize. That was not my intent. CyberG: 2. Point to any research or finding that leads to the conclusion that this idea will not sell well. Research? Findings? i'm going with my gut feeling here as a somewhat avid gamer and a keen observer of my fellow Nigerians. Total installed base of PS3 and Xbox consoles in Nigeria is not as massive as many of you think. PS3 games are expensive and the average gamer will shy away from paying full price for an idea such as this. A windows release will probably see your game speedily pirated and distributed for free or sold at N200 at Otigba. CyberG: 3. Expensive console devkit? Well, I don't know where you live or what you do but I have them right here already -- e.g. the latest dev-kit for everything MS. I specifically mentioned 'Consoles'. You can download free SDKs and Engines like Unreal 3 and iD tech but you need a developer console kit to test your compiled games on them. At last count, the PS3 DevKit was selling at $10000. The new PSVita devkit rings in at around 2000 euros. That ain't cheap for many people. I have no idea what 'everything MS' means. Microsoft's only console is the Xbox 360. CyberG: 4. Nothing wrong with spending time creating a product as you would agree that anything worth while would require time, yes? Even to build a house before, even a bungalow, it could take 6 months or more and that is just something that has been done over and over. So, time and effort to create a product like this should not be a reason to not do it. Poor analogy. building a bungalow is not anyone's day job. programming is. Time = money and if you spend 10 months putting your game together, where will the money come from to pay yourself? Your artist? Your animator? CyberG: Games will not be meant for just "Nigerians". How many games for XBOX, PS3 and similar consoles have you successfully pirated? Again, this would not be a reason not to proceed with an idea should anyone wish to actually pursue it. there are currently at least 2 threads in the Nairaland Games section inviting people to come pay N1500 to copy ripped PS3 games to their hard drives. pirated Xbox 360 DVDs are on sale in Alaba for N1000 only. So in you own opinion, potentially massive sales losses to piracy should not be an issue of strong consideration to developers and software development? |

As in a fighting game where fighters speak local languages and fight Naija action style, like action moves that are totally Nigerian, Just a thought. CyberG: This is one of the ideas I had thought about as far back as 2007 and I think it would be a big hit! Once the first one is done, it is pretty easy to re-create different games with similar scenes, will earn lots of money and lots of positive visibility for Nigeria. With the Kinect, people can practically have a feel for some flavour of "Oshodi Market" or wherever which I can guess would be really interesting to lots of non-Nigerians/Africans! Precisely why many Nigerian programmers remain dirt poor. Any realist would tell you that this will NOT sell well. Have you any idea how expensive console devkits are? Or the massive amount of time you'd have to spend coding, designing etc and then extensive bug testing to obtain certification for release on consoles. You'll definitely have your work cut out with Nintendo Then target market comes into play. It seems like a good idea now but you'll find that less than 500 Nigerians will be willing to pay full price for your game. Rampant piracy will cripple you too. Then you'd be left with lacklustre sales and staff salary backlogs. Realistic targets and plans should be your watchword! |

Now let me break it down for you. What is Exxon's major product? Oil. A finite resource which is drilled out of the ground. What is Apple's major product? Laptops, Ipads and such gadgets, right? Wrong actually. Apple's major product is it's proprietary software and services it provides it's consumers. This is the source of it's steady earnings. The hardware is just a way of locking consumers into the Apple Ecosystem. You may also want to look at Microsoft. What product does this Titan of a company produce? Is it hardware or a natural resource? Please try and speak about things you know about. In the words of Apple's CFO during their Q2 2011 earning call: Revenue for the quarter was $28.6 billion, representing year-over-year growth of 82%. This record quarterly revenue tops the previous record established in the most recent December quarter by $1.8 billion and was almost $13 billion over the year-ago quarter’s results.
The tremendous year-over-year increase was fueled primarily by dramatic growth in iPhone and iPad sales in addition to strong growth in Mac sales. Operating margin was a record high of $9.4 billion, representing 32.8% of revenueI find GEJ's facebook post to be rather mischievous, coming on the heels of his Education minister describing nigerian graduates as 'half-baked'. Also, thanks to a succession of clueless Presidents who would rather speak lofty words instead of solving Nigeria's educational problems, we lack the sort of hi-tech know-how the man is babbling about. Politics › Re: Crude Oil Discovered In Ara Orin, Kwara State by texazzpete(m): 1:15pm On Aug 15, 2011 |
The One: @knowall
I asked that question because you wrote that oil recognition should be common place in Nigeria because we have plenty of it. I can assure you that not up to 20% of qualified geologists in Nigeria have seen crude oil before.
Anyway, that's deviating from the discussion here. My point is that you do not announce an oil discovery because a farmer saw somwthing seeping from the ground.
To give a background of my knowledge of this field, some of the most comprehensive studies on tar sands bitumen in Nigeria was done at my undergraduate department in Ife. I personally worked on it for my B.Sc thesis. I've therefater studied petroleum engineering at M.Sc level in the UK and have worked as a reservoir engineer for more than half a decade so I can say that I know what I'm talking about. If you go to Agbabu, Idiobilayo and Oloda in Ondo State, there have been oil seepages since time immemorial but that does not make them announce that they discovered oil. Have you asked the Kwara State government if they've drilled there to confirm that a reservoir exists and if it does, the commerciality? And no, there's nowhere in Nigeria where the oil is almost "scoopable". Ask the governor what depths the deposits are and the reservoir pressure? Can flow be assured? Whether the oil is light or heavy? What's the API gravity?
I don't want you to see the above as an attmpt to brag or whatever. My point is that government officials should not come out to display their ignorance under the guise that every other person is also ignorant. Do you think there'll be a discovery in Kwara State and the whole industry in Nigeria will not be quaking with excitement now?
I rarely post on the forum but I'll not sit back and watch misinformation flying around unchecked. peanut123: Mr. KnowAll is intoxicated by his ignorance. Let me tell you two things, when you say the cost of extracting oil in Bayelsa is negligible, then you must be smoking something cheap because extraction of oil goes through the normal process of OPLs, seismic studies and reservoir studies to determine if it's in commercial quantities, community relations, hiring a rig, well completions, hooking up to a flowline or a flowstation before you can make money from the oil. All these costs millions (not thousands) of dollars. Also, even if there is oil in Kwara state, we dont know whether it's in commercial quantities so we have to find that out first if not you'll dump money and reap nothing. Someone also said onshore drilling is a thing of the past in Nigeria because of Ogoni land, that's another untruth. Let's get our facts right before typing.
By the way, I'm in the oil industry. KnowAll is a known numbskull here on Nairaland. Attempting to discuss logically with him is like casting pearls before swine. |

Any successful business man without any past issues, has not really come of age as a business man. My issues though were one too many
I turned 30 approximately a week ago, I looked back and pondered upon the good and well meaning clients I've caused some grief due to my lack of shrewd business management which I have since developed upon and not handling transactions in the appropriate manner with legal back-up which caused me some losses. Becoming a man now, not a boy.
I had the flair and still have the flair for delivering clean and exceptional cars. I'm working tirelessly and effortlessly to resolve all issues entirely, emerge stronger and eliminate the re-occurence of any future issues.

Many thanks This is hilarious. After this unserious reply that reeks of arrogance, I wonder if anyone here on Nairaland is foolish enough to ever do business with you. Someone paid since March 2nd for a vehicle that was supposed (by agreement!) to be delivered in 42 days time. 162 days have elapsed since March 2nd, almost 4 times the agreed delivery period and we are still talking as if all is right? By all accounts, this is a shameful failure to deliver on your promise. Why should anyone ever take you seriously as a 'businessman' ever again? Even worse still are the strong and numerous accusations of dealing on the wrong side of honesty. . IMHO, A simple 'refund' is extremely unfair to emitee. Why should German007 hang on to 0.9 million naira for nearly half a year and then refund the same amount? What of the 'time value of money'? In the future I suggest an interest rate is worked out so unscrupulous dealers will not continue to take advantage of unwary clients. -This nation has never answer to war crime committed despite deliberate civilian mass killing.
-Despite the obvious, she always join in the codemnation & persecution of other nation for crime 1/1000000th the magnitude of their.
-She is possession of most of these death toys yet hypocritically codemn other for having them.
-The nation postured herself as the world leader and has even attack other nation by guessing thay possess 'em WMD. Killlin thousands of innocent babies and bringing sorrow, tears and blood.
-She still never take responsibilty for the wars and atrocities that such war brings
-Let's thank this nation for infecting the world with "dem0-cra2y" and recessions.
Guess which nation?
Children are starving in Somalia right now and their only saving hope is being truncated by AL Shabaab terrorists and all you can talk about is the US? When will you imbecilic oafs EVER think about your own continent? Why are you more concerned with the US than with Somalia? Why do you creeps rattle off every 'atrocity' the US has carried out yet you know and say absolutely nothing about conflict in Somalia, Sudan and the Congo?
Where have you retardeens ever complained here about China's role in supporting the murderous Sudanese leadership in their genocide in Darfur? Where is your outrage?
You pathetic dolts sicken me. US this, US that! Is it because it's less glamorous to actually do any thinking for yourself instead of pulling ready made vitriol from the millions of conspiracy theorist websites out there? Do you have no words for the pathetic AU? Or the Arab league that tacitly supports the carnage in Somalia? Abeg STFU already. |
Car Talk › Re: Tokunbohs Are Now Very Scarce In The U.S. by texazzpete(m): 7:19am On Aug 10, 2011 |
Fhemmmy: You are very wrong Sir . . . . .Looming recession means, more people will hang on to their rides and not sell to get a new one and meaning lesser used rides will be in the market, meaning less to chose from and price will go up and be a little higher.
The only thing that might be in the market for the people would be people that default on loans and have to repo their machine and be sold . . . however, imagine demand and supply as well, when 200 people are waiting to buy same machine, the banks will wanna sell at the highest price possible and the bidding with so many interested buyers will drive the price up as well.
So whichever way you look at it, the price is going up . . . . . I was referring to the price of new cars. I admit it may have been confusing since this topic is about Tokunboh cars BizBooks: No, I think you got it wrong. How can there be a price slash when there are few new cars and even fewer used ones in the market. Instead of a price slash, prices are going up astronomically. The price of new cars will always drop in a recession. Consumers are afraid to spend so manufacturers do their best to entice them to spend by reducing prices. Rule of thumb: You cannot tempt people who are reluctant to spend by raising prices!I should have thought this would be fairly obvious. Remember how nearly all the UK shops had mega sales in 2009 to try to tempt people to spend? High cost of gasoline = lower prices/more incentives for 'gas guzzler' SUVs Recession = reduced spending = lower prices/more incentives Japan Quake = reduced production = Demand greater than supply = increasing prices. BizBooks: For your information, Honda reported a decline in profits not because of recession but due to a disruption of their operations in Japan caused by the earthquake. Some of their plants were closed for months. Which is why i said 'Looming' recession. It hasn't started yet and it may be averted but there's no denying that there's danger on the horizon. |
