Stop making begging lucrative for their parents. Simple as that. The OP talked about what we as individuals can do, any solution i will bring up is tied to what the average joe on the street can do. Talking about NGOs and Government laws is off topic, sorry. Also, i've given you sound advice on how to avoid being arrested (or mobbed and burnt on the streets of Lagos) for kidnapping. Politics › Re: Child Beggars On Lagos Street by texazzpete(m): 8:08pm On Jan 11, 2011 |
beknown: It is not kidnapping if done sensibly and with authorisation. This is why a registered NGO volunteers/personnel is required, not ordinary people. It is done with the support of local Police. Any child collected from the streets will automatically be recorded with the local Police in case they have been reported missing. This is illegal as heck. You have to inform the parents FIRST. Either you obtain their consent or legally take the child away to a better home. Until you have the appropriate laws in place, any 'NGO' that just goes out and picks up a child from the streets is kidnapping. Remember also that the kids have grown up with begging as a profession. They may very well love their families. At the least, most of the kids you pick up will be unwilling to leave. |

Politics › Re: Child Beggars On Lagos Street by texazzpete(m): 1:12pm On Jan 11, 2011 |
the OP is totally naive.
The children are sent out by their parents for the sole purpose of begging. The more you give, the more lucrative the begging profession is seen to be, and the more they will beg. There's no 'emotional trauma' when you turn them down.
The blame rests 100% on the parents. Many people here can testify to having offered some of these Niger and Chad kids some little jobs (wash clothes, cut grass etc) to make some money. They've all been turned down.
The only thing the Government can do is to punish the parents and take the kids away to orphanages. But that is a dangerous path to take and will most likely traumatise the kids.
I'm not going on a guilt trip over these, sorry. |

What Falana is doing is called 'crying over spilt milk'. We're already running behind schedule and the voters register needs to be renewed fast. At least we all heard the bitter tales of many Delta indigenes who could not vote due to a poor voters register.
What cowards like Falana do is to heap blame but shy away from proffering any solution. Instead of telling us what he would have done if he was faced with the scenario of a june voters registration, he's looking for who to put blame on.
As someone said before, schools provide a wide open, relatively conducive location for the registration process. Of course there's no question of using the schools while students are in session. That's just wrong. So what would you complaining lot have done differently? |

For those people who say its by choice, what choice do you really have when your beloved pastor makes it clear that if you don't pay up these monies, you are destined for failure and eternal damnation?
If you're a Redeemed member and you're not too comfortable with handing over a tithe to the church every month, how much choice do you really have when your G.O tells you that if you do not pay tithes in the church, you're as good as a pariah?
Jesus Christ devoted several parables to people caring for the poor and the needy. He showed the rich blessings for those who involve themselves in Charity and charitable works. Yet pastors will much rather preach old testament doctrine on 'first fruits' than dwell on Charity. |
Christianity Etc › Re: Is It True? Churches Asking You To Surrender Your Entire January Salary? by texazzpete(m): 7:13pm On Jan 10, 2011 |
saintdipo1: My beloved brethren, do not be ignorant, it is written in the bible to pay first fruit, God can not force you to pay your first fruit, he just wants to use the avenue to bless his children. You can give your first-fruit in faith to any bible believing church and you will experience unprecedented changes in your finances, too much of cynicism has kept alot of people in Bondage, most of these pastors we are talking about, they are practicing what they are teaching and besides they have their own business they are running. So it is wrong for anyone for anyone to think all these pastors need money, although there are alot of wolves in the church, but you must open spiritual eyes to recognize them. Where is the first fruit written in the new testament? It is also written in the old testament that we should make burnt offerings to the Lord. When last did you build an altar and sacrifice a lamb? All you gullible heathens! |

Summary: NO TIME TO READ. I agree with the 'No time to read' part. But not your reasons. You guys seem to project your own distractions on all the WAEC level students in Nigeria, forgetting that the bulk of these kids come from rural areas with limited access to these things. |

blacksta: It is time we ban Premier league, Smartphones and other entertainment avenues cause it is more of distraction rather than assistance. In my days In Nija in the Mid 90's students did well in respective of whether it is gce, waec, ssce or jamb.
what has happened - or it that everyone wants to become a musician. Wrong. We had super nintendo and 'late night movie' in our days and we never had this mass failure. Many of these students failing are from educationally disadvantaged areas with poor teachers, abysmal learning environment etc. Some of the blame can be placed on their parents that overload them with work after school, or fail to encourage or spur their kids on to read. I served in a village in Abia state and the average girl in my class would go home to tasks like sweeping, cooking dinner, bathing babies etc. most of these girls go straight to the market from school to sell goods! This scenario is rampant in many rural areas in Nigeria, places where they don't use smartphones or blackberries, places where watching more than 2 EPL games a week is a luxury. Of course, you have the really dumb ones who aren't smart enough to pass. We can't fix that. |

Christianity Etc › Re: Pastor Chris Charges Gate Fees For Watch Night Service? by texazzpete(m): 9:36am On Jan 07, 2011 |
lemur: I think people need to keep an open mind on this issue. What is fundamentally wrong with paying for a seat at a Christian event? The only trouble is that Nigerians want everything free of charge: free bibles, free attendance at conferences that are expensive to put together etc. The truth is that someone pays for those things -often people making sacrifices themselves because they believe in a cause. So if you don't care enough to attend the programme or to pay for it, then stay away and by all means shut your mouth on an issue that doesn't concern you!
In other countries of the world (US, UK, South Africa), Christain events are not always free. Conferences, conventions etc often require a registration fee. The poverty of our nation and indeed the poor mindsets of people (in addition to the need to provide maximum opportunity for impact) is the reason many religious organisations don't charge a fee, but there's nothing fundamentally wrong with this in my view. I am not a member of Christ Embassy or even a fan of Pastor Chris, but I don't have to be to know what's not right.
Plus a word of advise to those who have been talking anyhow on this post about men of God: better to shut up than get on God's wrong side. He still means it when he says 'touch not my anointed'. Even when they go wrong, He can deal with them. God doesn't allow anyone mess with His anointed ones. If you don't agree with a man of God's practise, don't attend his church but by all means don't get yourself involved in what frankly doesn't concern you. It not worth crossing God over. it was supposed to be a church service, not a conference or show. what kind of zombie mentality is this? I wonder if you'd be pleased paying an entrance fee to attend your friend's wedding. It pains me to see people so mentally enslaved over the 'touch not my anointed' thingy. PS: who ever insisted that Bibles must be free? |

osaxx: WOW! SO MUCH HAS BEEN SPOKEN AND SO MANY PEOPLE HAS SPOKEN OUT OF IGNORANCE AND I HAVE BEEN READING WITH EXCITMENT AND WONDER,
THERE IS SOMETHING YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT CHRIST EMBASSY, IT IS NOT ANOTHER NIGERIAN CHURCH, THINGS ARE DONE DIFFERENTLY THERE ,because IT IS AN INTERNAIONAL MINISTRY FROM NIGERIAN TO THE WORLD, HERALDING GODS DIVINE PRESENCE TO THE NATIONS OF THE WORLD.THAT 25,000 SEATER AUDITORIUM IS A GODS STUDIO.WHEN YOU ASK PEOPLE TO GO OUT THAT IT HAS EXCEEDED ITS CAPACITY.THEN NIGERIAN PRESS WILL GO AGAIN. EVEN THE SENIOR PASTORS STAYED BACK IN THERE DIFFERENT CHURCHES, OK.LAGOS CROWD IS DIFFICULT, I TELL YOU. THE 1,000 HAS REALLY HELPED. Why ask people to go out? The easiest thing to do was to allow people in until the venue was full, then politely refuse any new entrant. I wonder if you are even using your brain at all, what if 50,000 people had paid the N1,000. What would Christ Embassy people have done? By introducing a fee, you're deliberately restricting access to the venue to less privileged members of the society. What you're indirectly saying is that poor people should know their level and not enter the hallowed presence of Pastor Chris. Show me anywhere Jesus or the Apostles charged people to hear the word of God. osaxx: WOW! SO MUCH HAS BEEN SPOKEN AND SO MANY PEOPLE HAS SPOKEN OUT OF IGNORANCE AND I HAVE BEEN READING WITH EXCITMENT AND WONDER,
2. THERE IS A SPIRIT OF EXCELLENCE IN EVERY MEETING BY PASTOR CHRIS, AND IT IS BEEN AIRED WORLDWIDE, YOU DO NOT EXPECT THE CAMERAS TO SHOW PEOPLE ON THE ROOF OF THE AUDITORIUM, PREVIOUS MEETINGS HAS PROVED THAT WHICH ARE ALL FREE OF CHARGE AND PEOPLE COME FROM ALL MINISTRIES, FAITH, RELIGION TO EXPERIENCE GODS PRESENCE ,YOU KNOW NIGERIANS , NO BODY WILL LIKE TO STAY OUT AND THAT WILL DEFINATELY BE A STAMPEDE, THEY WILL EVEN OVER-POWER THE SECURITY AGENTS, USHERS, CROWD CONTROL.
3.I TELL YOU THE 1,000 HELPED A WHOLE LOT IT WAS PEACE AND WORK WAS EASIER FOR THE OFFICIALS.RIGHT NOW I TELL YOU ALL TESTIMONIES ARE ALREADY COMING IIN BOTH FROM PEOPLE OUTSIDE THE THE MAIN AUDITORIUM.
4.HOW I WISH YOUR CHURCH IS HEADED BY THE SPIRIT OF GOD YOU WILL UNDERSTAND WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT AND STOP CRITICISING, BECAUSE IT IS NOT PASTOR CHRIS DECISION, BUT THE SPIRIT OF GOD, AND IT WAS AN EXCELLENCE OUTCOME. PASTOR CHRIS WILL BE THE LAST PEROSN TO WANT TO COLLECT MONEY FROM YOU TO ATTEND GODS KINGDOM, BELIEVE ME. So what you're saying is that the presence of God is somewhat exclusive to Pastor Chris. Shebi people were climbing trees to see Jesus. Shebi the crowds were pressing all around him. Suddenly now it's all a photo shoot for people like you. Some of your statements border on blasphemy and that troubles me. osaxx: WOW! SO MUCH HAS BEEN SPOKEN AND SO MANY PEOPLE HAS SPOKEN OUT OF IGNORANCE AND I HAVE BEEN READING WITH EXCITMENT AND WONDER,
THERE ARE MANY MORE BIGGER MEETINGS WITH PASTOR CHRIS IN THE COMING MONTHS ,, HOW COME THEY ARE FREE OF CHARGE, AM EVEN SURPRISE AT A PASTORS COMMENT IN THIS WALL. YOU DO NOT TAKE YOUR INDIVIDUAL GRUDGE AGAINST A PERSON WITHOUT CONSIDERING WHAT THE BIBLE SAYS OR WITHOUT PRAYING FOR THE LEADING OF THE SPIRIT OF GOD BEFORE REGISTERING YOU NAME IN THE HELLS GATE, TONITE AM GOING DOWN ON MY KNEE FOR ALL OF YOU , SO GOD WILL FORGIVE YOU FOR YOU KNOW NOT WHAT YOU DO, You may as well declare Pastor Chris as your god, the way you're going. |
