| Christianity Etc › Road To Damascus Incident: Paul's Account by therationa(op): 12:08pm On Feb 26, 2008 |
The road to Damascus conversion of Saul to Paul is given in several passages in the bible (Act 9, Act 22 and Gal 1). Acts 22 and Gal 1 are first person accounts of the incident, narrated by Paul himself. So why cannot Paul get his story straight? The accounts are given below. See if you can spot the discrepancy. After his conversion, how long was it before he went to Jerusalem? BTW, why would the Jerusalem temple authorities have sent Saul into Damascus, a city in Syria and outside of their jurisdiction, to persecute Christians? This does not sound plausible. It is the equivalent of the Nigeria authorities dispatching police officers into Cameroon to arrest criminals. (We do not know if there were (or not) any extradition agreements or such like between Judea and Syria, but surely the Roman administrators of Syria would have frown upon a foreigner persecuting residents of their city.) So not only are these accounts internally discrepant, they lack a sense of historical verisimilitude.

Acts 22Galatians 2

1"Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense." 2When they heard him speak to them in Aramaic, they became very quiet. Then Paul said: 3"I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city. Under Gamaliel I was thoroughly trained in the law of our fathers and was just as zealous for God as any of you are today. 4 I persecuted the followers of this Way to their death, arresting both men and women and throwing them into prison, 5 as also the high priest and all the Council can testify. I even obtained letters from them to their brothers in Damascus, and went there to bring these people as prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished. 6"About noon as I came near Damascus, suddenly a bright light from heaven flashed around me. 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice say to me, 'Saul! Saul! Why do you persecute me?' 8" 'Who are you, Lord?' I asked. " 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting,' he replied. 9 My companions saw the light, but they did not understand the voice of him who was speaking to me. 10"'What shall I do, Lord?' I asked. "'Get up,' the Lord said, 'and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.' 11 My companions led me by the hand into Damascus, because the brilliance of the light had blinded me. 12"A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. 13 He stood beside me and said, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight!' And at that very moment I was able to see him. 14"Then he said: 'The God of our fathers has chosen you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth. 15 You will be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. 16 And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.' 17 "When I returned to Jerusalem and was praying at the temple, I fell into a trance 18 and saw the Lord speaking. 'Quick!' he said to me. 'Leave Jerusalem immediately, because they will not accept your testimony about me.' 19" 'Lord,' I replied, 'these men know that I went from one synagogue to another to imprison and beat those who believe in you. 20 And when the blood of your martyr Stephen was shed, I stood there giving my approval and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.' 21"Then the Lord said to me, 'Go; I will send you far away to the Gentiles.' " Paul the Roman Citizen 22 The crowd listened to Paul until he said this. Then they raised their voices and shouted, "Rid the earth of him! He's not fit to live!" 23 As they were shouting and throwing off their cloaks and flinging dust into the air, 24 the commander ordered Paul to be taken into the barracks. He directed that he be flogged and questioned in order to find out why the people were shouting at him like this. 25 As they stretched him out to flog him, Paul said to the centurion standing there, "Is it legal for you to flog a Roman citizen who hasn't even been found guilty?" 26 When the centurion heard this, he went to the commander and reported it. "What are you going to do?" he asked. "This man is a Roman citizen." 27The commander went to Paul and asked, "Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?" "Yes, I am," he answered. 28Then the commander said, "I had to pay a big price for my citizenship." "But I was born a citizen," Paul replied. 29Those who were about to question him withdrew immediately. The commander himself was alarmed when he realized that he had put Paul, a Roman citizen, in chains. 30The next day, since the commander wanted to find out exactly why Paul was being accused by the Jews, he released him and ordered the chief priests and all the Sanhedrin to assemble. Then he brought Paul and had him stand before them. 1Paul, an apostle, (not of men, neither by man, but by Jesus Christ, and God the Father, who raised him from the dead 2And all the brethren which are with me, unto the churches of Galatia: 3Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ, 4Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father: 5To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 6I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. 10For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. 11But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. 12For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ. 13For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews' religion, how that beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it: 14And profited in the Jews' religion above many my equals in mine own nation, being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers. 15But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, 16To reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen; immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: 17Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus. 18Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to see Peter, and abode with him fifteen days. 19But other of the apostles saw I none, save James the Lord's brother. 20Now the things which I write unto you, behold, before God, I lie not. 21Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia; 22And was unknown by face unto the churches of Judaea which were in Christ: 23But they had heard only, That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed. 24And they glorified God in me. | Christianity Etc › What Are Spiritual Truths? by therationa(op): 10:50am On Feb 26, 2008 |
What are spiritual truths? Nearly all my discussions with religionists have been brought to a premature end by the expression " , these are spiritual truths, beyond the comprehension of rational scientific inquiry , ". In one of my previous threads I raised a question as to what spirituality is but got absolutely no helpful response. Could it be that the religionists are relying on something that they are not able to define or comprehend? What really are spiritual truths? Is to believe that Jesus was born of a virgin a spiritual truth? Is the belief that Adam & Eve ate and apple in the Garden of Eden a spiritual truth? Please, help me out; I am seeking the truth. ===================================================================================================== Some of my other threads The Dangers Of Religious Fundamentalism To Intellectualism https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=110955.msg1929006#msg1929006 Danger! I have heard of the K-T boundary and I just answered you - I studied it for 3 weeks straight. I have heard of the end-permian extinction. I just think it all has to do with the flood that God used to wipe out the people. We are confusing this stuff. I mean all of a sudden - particles came together (big bang) and the earth was formed? Seriously?! I find that more ridiculous than even the Yoruba version of the creation of the earth
Why don't you go learn some more, girl? |

How would Noah have transported these animals from their various specialised habitats to the ark in the deserts of the Middle East?
@ imhotep - you have unleashed me today to the fullest. Thank you for this topic. @ threationa - I have my own questions for you. 1) Do you know the difference between a theory and a law, in the scientific sense of the words. Gravitation is a law and it's not a theory - that's very different. 2) Have you ever heard of any man's account of extinction? 3) How do you know that dinosaurs became extinct? To me, I think evolution is seeking to look for an explanation to disprove the essence of creation. I'm a student of evolutionary biology and from 9 - 12 everyday of the week, I'm supposed to believe that there is no God and we all evolved from apes. However, every second of my life - I believe in creation. Even the bible talks of extinction during the great flood that took most of the animals and men away during Noah's time.
Gravitation and Law can be used interchangeably, but there is a subtle difference between them. A law may be a generalisation of several conditions or theory but essentially the background for validation, predictability are the same. In the physical sciences, it means exactly the same thing but for semantic reason one may be prefered over the other. 2) No what is man's account of extinction? 3) Because we know that there once lived on earth (we have their fossils) but they are no longer arround. (don't bring the argument from silence here, cuz it just won't do) My questions for your; 1) Have you ever heard of the end-permian extinction event. 2) What do you know about the K-T boundary? 3) What do you about about human chromosome 2 and vitamin C synthesis in humans? |

The K-T boundary (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/K%E2%80%93T_boundary) is a layer of sedimentation deposited around 65 million years ago. This layer is very rich in iridium, an element mainly found in asteroid, so this layer, found all over the world is associated with an asteroid impact. It is also associated with mass extinction of animals and plants. In fact, the dinosaurs are thought to have been killed off by the consequences of the impact at that time.

imhotep:1) Good standard definition then. So in what way does evolution not meet the definition of a theory then? Have you heard of the following theories; The Theory of gravitation The Germ theory of disease The Theory of relativity The tectonic plate theory Evolution meets the criteria of theory just as much as the above theories. One of its strengths is it power to predict what organism exist in a given line of lineage. Ancestors to whales have recently been discovered based on its predictive strength. 2) I just posted a thread about the end-permian extinction event: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-115553.0.html 3) Current scientific consensus is that dinosaur went extinct about 65 million years ago. Have you ever heard of the KT boundary? I shall post a thread about it soon. |

The Permian–Triassic extinction event (250 million years ago) was a major turning point in the history of life of earth, that it is sometimes puzzling how little is known about this event by the general public. In this event, more that 96% (this figure varies from 90% to 99 %) of all lifeforms on the earth became extinct. It was so devastating that its effects were truly global. The cause of the event is not well understood, although candidate processes range from asteroid impact, to volcanism to, gaseous release from the oceans etc, etc. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permian-Triassic_extinction_event One of the survivors of this event was an animal called Lystrosaurus(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lystrosaurus). Take a look at your ancestor below: Is it not remarkable how life has been able to bounce back to the level of diversity that exists today? Thank goodness for EVOLUTION.
@Therantino, Thanks for your input. What I state in my posts is my own perception of what is revealed in the book "In the Light of Truth - The Grail Message. My personal experience both as a scientist and as one who can sense the WILL of God determines what I state in my posts. It is left for people to agree or disagree with it. I also recommend you to read the book entiltled "The Birth of Mankind by Rosellis von Saas. Roselis von Saas is an adherent of the Grail Message and you can obtain her book from Amazon. Using the present techniques of science, it is not possible to verify the entrance of the soul into the body. However using the gifts of God including the ability to sense extra sensory events, it is very possible to give an information and science can then use its instrument to verify it. Just as an example it very possible for "seeing ones" to state clearly the sex of a two hour old embryo and months later science can do the scann and confirm such. Such examples can be replicated under rigorous scientific controls so as to rule out chance or guess work. The tree that finally resulted in the human body is yet unknown to science, Neandarthal do not belong to it. As per Adam and Eve and the original sin, you can start a new thread and I can over my contribution. Thanks.
My problem with this is that none of it constitute objective verifiable knowlege. I have got a thread on original sin on https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-115525.0.html. |
@Therationa, I guess I am plain enough in my previous posts. I didnot say that evolution was responsible for creating humans. In my submission, I stated that a human being is a spirit with a physical or biological body. Both the spirit and the physical body that it animates are were created by God. The spirit was a direct gift of God and did not evolve from anything physical. Gods laws made evolution of the biological bodies possible, that is, evolution is the mechanism by which God used to create the physical or the human body. All the Homos you mentioned did not belong to the tree from which the human body evolved and that probably will explain why you cannot directly trace the present human body to the bodies of already known apes. The ape like animals from which the human body developed followed an entirely different line as it was guided by divine intellegence. We became humans when God implanted into the ape like body a living spirit, that is instead of an animal soul incarnating into the physical body, a human spirit incarnated. The radiations of the human spirit then transformed the ape-like body into the human body. On earth, we became humans when the spirit created by God took possesion of the physical body. As per the original sin, what do you mean by that. I need your definition so that I can give my view on what you defined.
Your point understood - but how did you come about all of the above? Is there some body of knowledge that describes what you just said? IS there any way in which the soul/body infusion could be verified? The pre-homo sapien that had souls, could they have been considered "children of god". For instance, would the Neandarthal have had souls? If they did, why did god let them go extinct? If there never was an Adam & Eve, then there never was Original Sin. That was my point. |
| Christianity Etc › The Catholic Doctrine, Original Sin And Evolution by therationa(op): 6:14pm On Feb 25, 2008 |
The Catholic establishment has now officially endorsed (or at least, does not oppose) the theory evolution as the mechanism that explains the diversity of life on the planet. This has been official Catholic position for some time now, accepting that the human body was formed through the process of evolution, but also stating that the soul was an immediate creation by God. See the statement below; Concerning human evolution, the Church has a more definite teaching. It allows for the possibility that man’s body developed from previous biological forms, under God’s guidance, but it insists on the special creation of his soul. Pope Pius XII declared that "the teaching authority of the Church does not forbid that, in conformity with the present state of human sciences and sacred theology, research and discussions . . . take place with regard to the doctrine of evolution, in as far as it inquires into the origin of the human body as coming from pre-existent and living matter—[but] the Catholic faith obliges us to hold that souls are immediately created by God" (Pius XII, Humani Generis 36). So whether the human body was specially created or developed, we are required to hold as a matter of Catholic faith that the human soul is specially created; it did not evolve, and it is not inherited from our parents, as our bodies are. Source: http://www.catholic.com/library/adam_eve_and_evolution.asp This statement takes for granted the existence of the soul, something that cannot be proven to exist. But let's forget about that for a moment. What this statement fails to deal with is when the soul might have been infused into the human body during the process of evolution. Did it happen only when we had attained the form in which we currently exist today? Or did Homo erectuses, Homo habillis also have souls? A clarification from the Catholic authorities would be much appreciated. If humans indeed evolved from other lifeforms, then there never was a Garden of Eden, Adam & Eve and the serpent. If these entities never existed, then there is no such thing as Original Sin? Consequently, whence the need for Salvation?
The theory of evolution is not incompatible with belief in God. People should be humble enough to follow the truth whether that truth is offered by science, religion or even by an athesist. Therantiona do not believe in God, the creator and on that note I disagree with him for God is. However his points on evolution is correct in sofar as it refers to the emergence of the complex eukaryotic bodies from simple unicellular organisms. DNA sequence data and fossil records give overwelming evidence that all living things have a common ancestor. No body can refute that. Thus their is the evolution of the physical bodies. However the physical bodies do not represent man, it is merely a dress he or she uses to experience on earth. The spirit or the "soul" which is the actual man did not evolve, it is a gift of God. Believers who oppose evolution of the human body may do so because the seem to think that evolution came about by itself or just by selection. Therantino and others may see evolution that way but my opinion is that evolution is a means that God used to create the physical body of man and there in lies the difference. Thus since evolution is guided by divine intelligence, then speciation will stop once a particular tree has reached the ultimate point. Thus the physical body of humans is the ultimate with regard to speciation following what I may call the human tree. It is the way God designed it. Thus, the human body as it known today will not in millions of years change to another species. However the genes will continue to evolve as they are subjected to evolutionary pressures but these pressures willnot result in further speciation. The physical bodies of men and the higher apes are closer than we may admit. However the difference lies in the transformation of the otherwise ape-like bodies by the human spirit. Thus it is correct to say that our physical bodies evolved and has close resemblance with an ape like animal but it absolutely wrong to say that man evolved from apes or an extinct ape like animal since man is a living spirit. My view therefore is that the laws of God made evolution possible and God used evolution as a means of creating our physical bodies. The various individual steps is still largely unknown but as men seek to understand the working of God, they may be granted the grace to survey the entire happening that spanned millions of years. It will then be possible for people to identify the transition animals on the various nodes of the human physical body evolutionary tree. More importantly, they will also see why the transition animals at the various nodes became extinct. In summary the human physical body arose out evolution and evolution is the means God used to create not just human bodies but the plethora of living organisms.
If you agree that evolution was responsible for "creating" humans, at what point in that evolutionary process did "we" become humans? 1- Was it when we were homo erectus, Homo floresiensis, Homo habilis, etc etc,? 2- What does this mean for the doctrine of Original Sin? |
