imhotep:You called that a balanced view? It make little or no mention of the 2nd set of commandments in Ex 34. All it says was that there was a 2nd set which replace the 1st, and that the 2nd set was place in the Ark. So which has priority, 2nd or 1st? What are your views or have you never thought of this issue? |
imhotep:You are absolutely correct about my biblical scholarship. Am an interested layman. So I tend to see the bible simple in black and white as it is given on the page. I could fail but notice two sets of commandments. Can you explain why some commandments are missing from the 2nd set and why the 2nd set has some new and bizarre commandments? The second set would have been the one in the Ark, correct? Then why do we retain the 1st set, given the Ark was the covenant that God had with his people? |
anyone knows which 10 commandments to follow? |
The first two books of the Christian bible narrates the story of the creation of the world. Genesis 1 gives one account and Genesis 2 gives another account with some similar but also strikingly differing order of events. In the first version, God creates plants first, then animals, then man and woman. In the second account, God creates man first, then plants. Then he creates animals so that man should not be alone. And last, after man does not find a satisfactory mate among the animals, God creates woman. And so we have;

Gen 1Gen 2

plantsman

animalsplants

man & woman animals

woman

In the original Hebrew, the first version (Gen 1) always refers to the creator as God - 35 times. The second version (Gen 2) always refers to him by his name, Yahweh God - 11 times. The first version never calls him Yahweh; the second version never calls him God. The same event is narrated twice, but there cannot get their story right. In which order were these things created? Well to find out why this story was so written, you will have to read the brilliant book by Richard Friedman. BTW, this also explains why there are two Noah flood accounts; Fascinating.

Genesis 1Genesis 2

1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. 6 And God said, "Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water." 7 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 8 God called the expanse "sky." And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day. 9 And God said, "Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so. 10 God called the dry ground "land," and the gathered waters he called "seas." And God saw that it was good. 11 Then God said, "Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds." And it was so. 12 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day. 14 And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth." And it was so. 16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day. 20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." 21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day. 24 And God said, "Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind." And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. 26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground." 27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." 29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food." And it was so. 31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day. 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens- 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth [b] and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth [c] and there was no man to work the ground, 6 but streams [d] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground- 7 the LORD God formed the man [e] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates. 15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die." 18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." 19 Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds of the air and all the beasts of the field. But for Adam [h] no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs [i] and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib [j] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man." 24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. 25 The man and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

|
cgift:Those who know the mind of God would explain his acts both in the OT and NT without much difficulties. Woow: You guys KNOW the mind of God. That's a new one. |
KAG:KAG, we have been thru this million times but they do not seem to appreciate the scientific method. Imhotep advances these bizarre arguments all the time but he never learns from the responses. What religions can do to ones mind is incalculable. |
bawomolo:Those were some good ones. Will add to main post. |
jagunlabi:This is a good one. Can you remember chapter/verse? |
kola oloye:You just quoted Numbers. How about this from the same book; 15 "Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them. 16 "They were the ones who followed Balaam's advice and were the means of turning the Israelites away from the LORD in what happened at Peor, so that a plague struck the LORD's people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man. |
My bible shocker of today is about the story of Lot; Basically, this daughters get him drunk and when he is passed out in a stupor they have sex with him. How he managed to get it up is not mentioned. Did they have viagra back then? ![]() C'mon guys, get going! |
imhotep:But can you attempt an answer? |
did you see these question? Have you ever touched an AIDS virus with your own hands? Have you ever touched uranium with your hand? |
imhotep:- Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes? ---- NO - Have you ever touched an evolving organism with your own hands, as it evolved? ---- NO OK, my questions to you; Have you ever touched an AIDS virus with your own hands? Have you ever touched uranium with your hand? |
imhotep:My goodness, you are sounding un-educated again. I haven't touched it with my hands, but I have read the relevant books and journals. The evidence is in the DNA. I asked you about Chromosome No. 2. Have did you check it out. You really should not be living in this era, with such attitude. The bronze age befits you better. |
MC Usman:I will submit to your superior knowledge if you can produce a single scientific evidence in support of your claims above. I will throw away all my old ideas and embrace your ideas if the evidence is in your favour. Until then, I will go with the majority scientific consensus for now. Please supply evidence, don't just spew out comments without the background shorings. |

joshjosh:Thank you sir, have a good day too. |
joshjosh:Well, if I had my way, these churches should be left to die out naturally. They do very little but promote ignorance to poor, simple and sometimes credulous people. |
In the days I attended Christian churches, and now in my post-Christian incarnation, what I have notices is the selective cheery-picking manner in which ministers use the bible. Typically, they would select verse, here and there, to make a specific doctrine point. The majority of church-goers, not being very intellectually curious, never read these verses in their fully context. The verses about tithes are a particular favourite in most of the churches I attended, for good reasons. Without the emphasis on these verses, the churches would be financially crippled. The verses about blessings, wealth, miracles are also favourites because these help entice the congregation to the notion of expected positive change in their circumstances. But are there any verses in the bible that are deliberately avoided by the ministers on the pulpits? What would you like to hear preached about from the pulpits? For instance, I would like to hear Number 31 preached from the pulpits, particularly the following verses; 15 "Have you allowed all the women to live?" he asked them. Would you like to hear these verses more in your churches? |
Horus:Good response. I will add that to the main post. |

What is (are) the most shocking and reprehensible things you have found in the bible? For my part, for a book that claims to be the arbiter of morality, I have found the following quite truly and breathtakingly shocking; 1) The amount of murder and killing is unprecedented in any other book 2) The non-condemnation of slavery 3) The amount of contradiction where we would expect harmony So, get your thinking caps on and post your bible shockers? I shall collect the really good ones and post them in the main body of this post; ============================ Great Responses from Posters ================================= Horus: jagunlabi: bawomolo: |
SeanT21:But Ex 20 are the ones he smashed. And Ex 34 are the replacements. That is what my bible says. |
Horus:Well spotted. I hadn't come across that before. Excellent. ![]() |
The 10 commandments is presented in the bible in three different places. The first set of commandments presented in Exodus 20 were the first commandments given to Moses by God on Mt. Sinai. But the tablets on which the commandments had been written by God's own hands were broken into pieces by Moses on his descent from the mountain. He went back up the mountain and God presented him with another set to replace the tablets he had smashed. The second set is given in Exodus 34, with a retelling in Deut 5; I have given them below for your own perusal.

Exodus 20Exodus 34 Deut 5

1 And God spoke all these words: 2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 3 "You shall have no other gods before me. 4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand {generations} of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. 8 "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. 13 "You shall not murder. 14 "You shall not commit adultery. 15 "You shall not steal. 16 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 17 "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." 18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die." 20 Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning." 21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was. 1 The LORD said to Moses, "Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. 2 Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai. Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. 3 No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain; not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain." 4 So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the LORD had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands. 5 Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation." 8 Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. 9 "O Lord, if I have found favor in your eyes," he said, "then let the Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our wickedness and our sin, and take us as your inheritance." 10 Then the LORD said: "I am making a covenant with you. Before all your people I will do wonders never before done in any nation in all the world. The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the LORD, will do for you. 11 Obey what I command you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 12 Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare among you. 13 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles. 14 Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. 15 "Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices. 16 And when you choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, they will lead your sons to do the same. 17 "Do not make cast idols. 18 "Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Abib, for in that month you came out of Egypt. 19 "The first offspring of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20 Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem all your firstborn sons. "No one is to appear before me empty-handed. 21 "Six days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest. 22 "Celebrate the Feast of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the turn of the year. 23 Three times a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign LORD, the God of Israel. 24 I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your territory, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the LORD your God. 25 "Do not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast, and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Feast remain until morning. 26 "Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God. "Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk." 27 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel." 28 Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant—the Ten Commandments. The Radiant Face of Moses 29 When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the Testimony in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD. 30 When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them. 32 Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the LORD had given him on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. 34 But whenever he entered the LORD's presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35 they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the LORD. 1 Moses summoned all Israel and said: Hear, O Israel, the decrees and laws I declare in your hearing today. Learn them and be sure to follow them. 2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. 3 It was not with our fathers that the LORD made this covenant, but with us, with all of us who are alive here today. 4 The LORD spoke to you face to face out of the fire on the mountain. 5 (At that time I stood between the LORD and you to declare to you the word of the LORD, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain.) And he said: 6 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 7 "You shall have no other gods before [a] me. 8 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. 11 "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. 12 "Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor the alien within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do. 15 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. 16 "Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the LORD your God is giving you. 17 "You shall not murder. 18 "You shall not commit adultery. 19 "You shall not steal. 20 "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. 21 "You shall not covet your neighbor's wife. You shall not set your desire on your neighbor's house or land, his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor." 22 These are the commandments the LORD proclaimed in a loud voice to your whole assembly there on the mountain from out of the fire, the cloud and the deep darkness; and he added nothing more. Then he wrote them on two stone tablets and gave them to me.

What the keen observer would notice is that these two sets of commandments do not match up, as would be expected if the second set was meant as a replacement of the first set (Ex 34: 1 The LORD said to Moses, "Chisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. ). Did God change his mind about what constituted his laws in the intervening time? Did God lose his memory? What happened to the laws on killing, theft and perjury?. These are missing in the second set - have they been repealed? The tenth commandments in the second set (Ex. 34: 26) cautious against cooking a young goat in its mother's milk. For goodness sake, who might have wanted to do that? And why do we need this bizarre commandment? Apparently, the Ark of the Covenant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ark_of_the_Covenant) would have held the second set of commandments, the one devoid of the injunction of killing (homicide), theft and perjury. Given the reverence the Jews had for the Ark, does this not suggest that the Exodus 34 commandments should have precedence over the Exodus 20 commandments? Why is it that the Exodus 20 commandments are often quoted by Christians as representing the moral basis for the Christian life when ironically the Jews did not observed them? ==================================================================================== ===================================================================================================== Some of my other threads The Dangers Of Religious Fundamentalism To Intellectualism https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=110955.msg1929006#msg1929006 Danger! One of Jesus's founding doctrine was the doctrine of passive non-resistance to evil and violence. This is expounded in the books of Luke 6: 27 - 28 and Matthew 5: 39 - 41.

Luke 6: 24-31Matthew 5: 37-45

24But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. 25Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. 26Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. 27But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 28Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. 29And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also. 30Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. 31And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. 37But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. 38Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: 39But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. 41And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. 42Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. 43Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; 45That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

These are some of the most preposterous words attributed to Jesus. He is commanding people to love, not least their enemies. Love, the classic sense of the word, is a sentiment that is gained and not commanded. Loving ones enemies is not the route to resolving the tension that may exist between both parties. Negotiation and discussions are a better way to deal with ones enemies than the blanket expenditure of ones love. Further, why should one NOT resist evil? Basically, he takes from an individual the legitimate right to defend himself. If a man walks into your house and takes away your books, do you also give him you clothes? If he strikes you, would you show him the other cheek? How many Christians adhere to this standard? Here is what George Smith has to say about this doctrine; Why? For what possible reason should one offer oneself as a sacrificial animal in this way? Such questions, however, do not apply to Jesus, because he is interested only in obedience, not in presenting rational arguments. In fact, when viewed in this context, this commands begin to make sense. We are not to judge others, Jesus says, which is merely another facet of suspending ones critical faculties. We are to tolerate injustice, we are to refrain from passing value judgements of other people -- such precepts require the obliteration of one's capacity to distinguish the good from the evil; the require the kind of intellectual and moral passiveness that generates a mentality of obedience. The man who is incapable of passing independent value judgements will be least critical when given orders. And he will be unlikely to evaluate the moral worth of the man, or the supposed god, from whence those orders come. Source: Atheism: The case Against God, George H. Smith, Page 325. No wonder they are called "The Flock", servile little machines, at the beck and call of clerics and deities! Are there any Christians today who follow these precepts of Jesus? If you don't, are you justified in calling yourself a Christian? ===================================================================================================== Some of my other threads The Dangers Of Religious Fundamentalism To Intellectualism https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria?topic=110955.msg1929006#msg1929006 Danger! How could he NOT have known that his attempts at eradicating sin would fail miserably? If he has not been successful in dealing with sin on earth and in heaven, should we believe him when he say that THE NEW HEAVEN AND THE NEW EARTH will be free from sin? What is going to stop the angels from starting the process all over again? |
