Seriously, I'm speechless. I still can't believe I won. I wish to congratulate everyone that participated, both the organizers (who gave me the opportunity to tell my story through poetry), judges (who appreciated my work and judged me accordingly), poets(you guys rock! Not to mention those whose I wished I wrote especially the piece titled "two hours to live" , designers (especially Kennikazi, that guy na chairman. I'm sorry I bombarded you with grains of mails and for also making you fall in love with my 'seductress').I could go on and on thanking and appreciating you all... I'm not perfect, so I'm very open to the doors of improvement. The poem reflex my personal experience with a woman hence my too many exaggerations in it. I still don't see myself as a winner. You guys are the winners from whose shadow I'm lucky to find myself. Thank you. |
Happy Birthday Spongy... Wishing u many more fruitful years ahead Here is a little birthday gift for u. Its a Haiku poem titled " Perfect Make Up" Face punctured holes of Beauty; dimples and smiles Illumines laughter - cheers! |

Wow!!! I'm deeply honoured. I never knew the poem "the Father-less" could take me to the next round nor someone would love it. I wrote it with torpid eye lashes casting my seductive bed (sleep in my eyes) I just took a peep at the scores and was shocked (is number 18 truly my number? As in The Seductress is Hapless?) . Its unbelievable! But..... Thanks y'all I appreciate *crying* |

number 18 The Seductress is Hapless Designer: Kennikazi WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR TOPIC? The topic did justice to the thought I’ve always nursed in my head after I met a female celebrity in Kinshasa, Gongo. The lady was arrogantly beautiful and people paid heavily to see her, I once did too. Few months later, I heard she was involved in a car accident that left a huge scar on her face, and when I went to pay her a visit, I discovered that she had committed suicide.. WHAT UNIQUE EXPERIENCE DID YOU DERIVE FROM WORKING WITH A DESIGNER? Despite the fact that I bombarded Kennikazi with series of mails in order to come up with the design I had in mind, he never relented, he kept on using his sense of humour to clinch me. Imagine the guy asking me if I wanted him to include bare bosom and a.s$ on the design and I’m like ‘dude hope you aren’t falling for the seductress too?’ He did a great job (a bottle of beer for you) hehehhehe WHAT WERE THE CONSTRAINTS INVOLVED IN WORKING IN A TEAM? Communication: Mails sent and received usually got attended to late because we both were entangled in our various personal and busy schedules and NEPA, they almost had their way but Oluwa was involved. TELL US EVERYTHING WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR POEM. The Seductress is Hapless is a narrative poem of eight lines with a rhyme scheme (similar to the Italian ottava rima) of ababcdcd placed in four (4) stanzas. It tells the story of a beautiful young seductress (Madina) who lost her beauty through an accident while feasting with men who she preyed on. The first stanza of my poem talks about ‘fun’ starved group of men who have gathered in anticipation to seek the beautiful seductress with all willing to do anything to bed her. The second stanza explains their excitement as she steps out in sight by professing themselves and enticements. The third stanza also explains her mode of entrance, the seductive aura that thrilled men, the jealousy of her fellow women and the rumoured power of her beauty. And the last stanza, the calamity that befell her when carried away by her beauty from a nearby mirror and the accident that led to losing her beauty. WHY DID THE DESIGNER USE THE DESIGNES, PICTURES, VISUALS AND EVERY OTHER COMPONENT OF THE DESIGN? The picture was used to portray the helplessness of a lady who was badly injured, the black ink around her leg and face is the blood from wounds sustained after she fell, the staircase the house that host her guests whom she was coming to see before her accident. THE MEANING OF SOME FIGURES OF SPEECH, TERMS AND DESIGNS AND WHAT THEY SIGNIFY: There are too many metaphors used in this poem, the poet took on the key metaphors that better explains the context of the poem è “shafts of the sun”( captures the angelic light that glows on her face), “slayer of love, goddess of lust” (the poet used this to describe the seductress as one without emotions) “ …lovers of lust and murderer of murderers” (this is a metaphor for the kind of men present in the feast) “cliché of emotional agony” (this metaphor was used to describe her idea of ‘love’), “gallery of thought” (this is a metaphor for memory) “mask of beauty” ( it is used to describe the pain behind the identity) etc. Repetition èThe word ‘they’ in the poem is talking about a group adulterers and fornications. And the word “Madina” is the name of the seductress. Alliteration è There are many alliterations in the poem, examples are “Loyal lovers of lusts and murderer of murderers” “One kiss, one touch and one night” “Her long hair had eclipsed herself”. Personificationè “Stolen and tattooed in intrinsic view”, “she once killed death With her breath - and her smile once deflowered a monastic” Simile è they are present in line 1, 4, and 18 Paradox è a paradoxical statement appears contradictory in its claims but when it reexamined, it yields it true meaning “she once killed death with her breath” Symbol è In order to well depict her character, the name of the famous seductress “Cleopatra” was used symbolically for comparison. Caesura è A Caesura is said to occur on a poetic line if there is a ‘pause in rhythm’. The poet uses it to emphastze the disorder in the cosmis system. Normally pauses ought to have occurred at the end of a poetic line but in this poem it is not always the same. The poet used semi colon, and exclamation marks to cause a break Examples are found in line 3, 13 and 32 Rhyme è The poem is composed of rhymed line. The rhyme scheme used is ababcdcd Enjambment è This is the continuation of meaning, without pause or break, from one line of poetry to the next Examples are found in all stanzas. Other noted figures of speech not mentioned may have probably skipped my mind and it should please remain so (I didn’t study English in the university abeg) Terms used è sullen (slow-moving), dubbed (nicknamed), libidinously (expressing intimate desires), hankering (to want something), squinty (action of narrowing the eyes in order to see better), Intrinsic (basic and essential), progeny (offspring), ogled (stare at somebody desirously), distrait ( inattentive), pendulous (hang loosely), covetous (yearn to have somebody’s belongings), voguish (stylish), monastic ( a monk or a religious person), dearth (scarce), negligee (a woman’s light dressing gown), polished glass (mirror), lurch (fall violently), blooper (embarrassing mistake), poise (composure or controlled grace in moving), gleeful mockeries(delighted by silliness) etc. IN CONCLUSION, WHAT IS THE MESSAGE BEHIND YOUR POEM? The poem is literally saying that nothing last forever; both beauty and wealth should be used judiciously. In our contemporary society where wealth/affluence can get one the kind of girl a man so desired, it is pertinent to note that one’s personality is the key instrument that determine either if one remains married or single, as the subject of beauty fades and sours with time. Lastly, it is not all those that you (the women) sway or come to you mean well, as they would mostly take to their heels when they discover that you’ve lost your feminine prowess. Thank y’all. |
