A zorrilla (a member of the weasel family; mustelidae) once kept 9 full grown lions at bay while feasting on their kill (a zebra)! Zorrillas come with an offensive odour from their anal glands that drives off enemies! For strength you need muscles and a python is nothing but a 'roll of muscle' so when you see one try to avoid attacking it alone, they are masters of their games, a 15-foot long one can kill a man be careful! ![]() |
miiraaj: Hehehehe! You and your boss must be wetting your pants...'Mirage' indeed, you couldn't have named yourself better 'miiraaj' definitely by the time the election would be over come 2015, you will realize that all what you are seeing now is nothing but a 'mirage' becos Jonathan will still carry the day....keep dreaming, hoping in ur illusion ![]() |
saved: :- It can only kick with hind legs, any attempt to use the horns will result to the lion going for its wind pipe thereby becoming delicious food.Nay we are not talking about a giraffe (fond of kicking) here, Sable Antelopes are blessed with scimitar shaped horns that measures almost 4 feet long to d nape of their necks and if cornered may spell doom for an unwary lion ![]() |
1) The Gaboon Viper (Bitis gabonica) has the longest fangs (almost 2 inches) of any known snakes. 2) The last surviving giraffe in Nigeria was shot dead by a police officer in 1987 at the then Yankari Game Reserve (now known as Yakari National Park) 3) The largest National Park in Nigeria remains the Gashaka Gumpti National Park in Taraba State. 4) A lion can scale a 6-foot fence with a dead bullock clasped between its jaws. 5) A leopard in Kenya was found with a 91 kg giraffe it dragged up a tree |
Not many people will realize that cockroaches are 'cannibalistic' in nature (if in doubt, just kill one and place it in a corner very soon another one will appear and start feeding right from the abdomen) make sure its lying down on its back! Also, bonobos, dolphins, rams all exhibit traits of homosexualities while our domesticated goats exhibit both homosexual and lesbian tendencies ![]() |
Ok Sir! I hope he is contesting as the Chief Imam of the Central Mosque of Katsina Buhari with practical jokes shaa ![]() |
Piranha (especially the red-bellied species) are the most dangerous fish of tropical waters in the Amazon rivers and are capable of reducing animals as big as a horse to bare skeletons under 'few minutes' with their razor sharp teeth and formidable jaws! They move in schools of about hundreds and are feared by animals of the jungle not even anacondas (although young ones) are spared! |
Ultimate Fact About Wildlife Consumption. According to the legend of Okikioluwa, the grasscutter (eran òyà) is the most delicious of all bushmeats. Wether you fry or just boil it, it's good to go to your belly (yummy). To the topic, this thread is informative. Nice one @tomakint. Are you a zoologist?
I am not but I have deep love for anything nature the interest is too much! I am an environmentalist though a self-trained one ![]() |

mebad: Have always been in love with d wild and animals in general. If in doubt just google about those 'pugnacious antelopes' they have been proved time and again to do just that against 'lone lions' ![]() |
Not. . . the regular bobbing! I can distinguish the regular hopping/bobbing to courtship dance. It aint no courtship. You know, the regular erratic movements birds make.
got no clue dearie ![]() |
Ok, this may sound stupid, so I'm gonna apologize first, but why do birds bob their head up and down? And why do they move from side to side like a dance ritual? Is it for stability/balance? I actually have a friend that's scared of birds lol. She's like "why do they move like that?" rotfl
That's what we called 'Courtship Display or dance' to woo the intended partner for mating it's very common with partridges, pheasants, grouse etc and all those birds in the same family |
more facts from me; *If sea levels should rise by 75 to 85 metres, nearly all, except for a few coastal buildings would be submerged *Ostrich’s egg is 4,500 times heavier than that of the smallest bird’s egg – the humming bird *A reptile needs to stay warm while it is digesting food – a snake that has eaten, but cannot get to a warm place, may die because the food in its stomach will be too cold to digest *The New Mexico whiptail lizards and other several species are all – female and can reproduce without mating, where the unfertilized eggs develop and hatch through a process called parthenogenesis *Barbary apes are the only monkeys found in Europe, at the Gibraltar region *In some species of fish families such as wrasses, parrot fishes and swamp eels every individual is born as a female while male are produced by sex reversal from female to male, a process called protogyny. |
yuzedo: You didn't drop any facts about the Nigerian Politicians that dominate our society or you think those animals aren't part of wildlife??please don't derail abeg, trust me there is a lot to learn from this thread if you stick around, remember this is no 'politics section' thanks you! |
Ohh now I get what you're saying ![]() So tell me about your experience.
Toss me some questions on wildlife first then we can move up the ladder gradually, if you don't mind ![]() |
I don't think it necessarily has to do with change of diet, but more with available resource. carnivores will eat anything meat they come in contact with. Throw a man into a lion/tiger territory, healthy or not, they'll chop him up. Carnivorous animals like lions/tigers will eat anything that is readily available in their surrounding. Forgive me, but I think any carnivore is a habitual man-eater.
I beg to differ, are you aware that Lions are faced with two regimes in the wild "Feast and Famine regime"? Feast is when there are abundance of wildebeest, Zebras and other prey items (because Lions prefer the flesh of these two ungulates) but during famine regime Lions and most predators will take on anything including decaying animals that's when you see them slugging it out with hyenas now coming to your point of carnivorous animals will readily eat humans I think it's not true why? they have been 'created to prefer certain preys for the other' and most times they will try to avoid humans I am talking from experience my dear ![]() |
If they're carnivorous, then aren't they "habitual man-eaters"? When does it become habitual?
Let me break it down, three of the Big Cats' Lions, Tigers and Leopards can become habitual men-eaters if they are too old to hunt their usual fleet-footed preys or accidentally human encroachment to their habitats leads to change of diets and one thing about these afore-mentioned predators is that the moment they taste human flesh they hardly let go, stories abound from Kenya down to South Africa and far afield to India. Their becoming habitual men-eaters is gradual, so that's the point! Wao, I never knew you love wildlife like this, I thought Ileke-Idi was the bomb but here you are too, that's good! ![]() |
Wow. . . Look at the weapons on those babies! https://www.south-africa-tours-and-travel.com/images/sable-antelope-rsa-roodewalbushlodge.jpg
Trust me the first time I did a thorough research on these 'pugnacious antelopes' I discovered that the 'The Forest' is indeed a battle for survival! A sable antelope is truly a match for a lion if cornered! |
Wow!! Interesting faces. So only sick lion/tigers prey on humans? Does that mean I can walk into healthy lion/tiger territory without fear?
Don't try that, remember they are carnivorous animals I am talking about 'habitual men-eaters' in this case ![]() |
ELEPHANT EMPATHY Elephants are extremely emotional animals, easily bonding with other elephants or the humans who care for them. These deep attachments can lead to terrible grief when a loved one dies. Elephants are known to shed tears, bury their dead, go into depression and starve themselves in reaction to a loss. One elephant at an Indian zoo was so distraught over the death of her friend that she refused to eat or drink, leading to her own death.
In all ramifications the bolded is true, I have a thread to that effect here too; https://www.nairaland.com/1204348/some-facts-need-know-wildlife |
