aletheia:
What is prophecy? Not all that men claim is prophecy is actually prophecy.
My point exactly!

aletheia:
Why would a supposed MOG be "prophesying" about the little matter of food and drink and raiment and the possessions of this world? When Jesus has said:
My point exactly!

aletheia:
[i]Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seeksmiley for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (Mat 6:31-33)

@t-TONYE

In addition I asked a last question which you didn't answer , I quoted a scripture.
I just realised you asked a question which is>>>>
2 Kings 4:15-16
15 And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door. 16 And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son.

I would have love to know from your perspective  if the scripture above is prophecy or prayer.
Kai walai, Jo you really got me shaking my heads here.

What if i tell you that the prophet in that passage actually prayed to her and not prophesied to her. Ask me how?

If Prophesies are words or act made by divine inspiration (like you even quoted although the def. is not all sufficient) and if divine means that which has to do with God. Therefore the act of this prophet was not a Prophesy because no where was it mentioned that he was divinely inspired (like he received a word from God on her behalf) rather I'll say he prayed for her.

Let me show you what i understand by prayer: Prayer is a request made to God or a deity for someone, something expecting results. [Martins dictionary of prayers] applying this definition to the context of our passage, ought we say that a request was made in declaration form to God expecting results (time of life) for the barren woman thus prayer.

I know you might also want to ask the usage/meaning of the term "prophesies" as used in 1corinthian.11

well to that i will quote how the amplified version of the bible sees the term.

1 Cor 11:4

4 Any man who prays or prophesies (teaches, refutes, reproves, admonishes, and comforts) with his head covered dishonors his Head (Christ). AMP

Hope you can see that prophesies comes in two. One means to speak and write by divine inspiration, the other is to teach, admonish and comfort which is all geared towards BUILDING THE SPIRITUAL LIFE OF A MAN (which is my point on how prophesies should be) and not about buying motor or okada or skyscrapers.

Any prophesy that doesnt build people is a false one. quote me anytime, anywhere.

cheers bro!

TONYE, our responsibility is to pray for ministers and for the body of christ, we have no mandate to criticize ministers or churches. It will back fire, we have many unsaved people that such damaging criticism will discourage from getting saved. Our criticism doesn't change anything but our prayers changes everything. That is the mandate we have.

Colossians 4:3-4
3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: 4 That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.
Jo, one big problem i perceive is that you have a way of misinterpreting things most times. Please kindly show me where i have criticized any church or minister in all my posts in this forum. . .even though criticism is not wrong but then it is never in my person to.My questions to you are

- Will you perceive as criticism my speaking out a vice that abounds within my christian faith?

- When Jesus rebuked the religious fathers of his time, did it kill the congregations faith in God or rather opened the gullibles eyes to the truth?

- When John the baptsit converted the wicked men to God, was it by prayers or stern rebuke?

- Which is more dangerous? keeping quiet while the wolves in sheep's clothing have a swell time deceiving many of God's children to hell OR speaking out the truth and let the people hate you for doing so? pls answer me!

- What is wrong in expressing concerns for the welbeing of my belief-system.?

- In essence, is there anything even wrong in the act of criticism if the definition of the term is correct from my dictionary -
the expression of disapproval of someone or something based on perceived faults or mistakes.

Well while you try answering that I beg to continue. Jo, my good friend you are a blessed minister of CEC and accept it or not, you have the spiritual responsibility to build the spiritual base of your subjects and that includes telling them the truth, telling them to their face that which is wrong and detestful.

Jo, i have quoted it before, the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, it is about righteousness (right standing with God and Man) and as christians we owe ourselves the responsibility of correcting ourselves when we tend to deviate from the founding truths of our dearly beloved faith.

Like it or not, REBUKES & CORRECTIONS are part of the christians duty

2 Tim 3:

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.NIV

@ Deepsight,

Bro pls let me take a cut in to this discourse alittle bit. . .I will perceive that your biase against this "Jewish man" could be seen from the angle of his declaration as a deity and his followership hence why not a "black man". Yes your views are ok! Afterall every of these humans should have a right to their self-expression whether divine or terrestial and as such reserve the natural right to garner followership for themselves if it so be.

But we both should understand that issues pertaining to divinity are often recognized as sensitive and requires some degree of observance to certain form of thesis, practises and belief-system as would be declared by this said "divinity-personalities or movements".

That said, I'll put it that the premise upon which every religious movement should be adjudge is on the value of Love for Life. Life in this context encompasses the Life unseen and the Life seen.

Life Unseen

If a so-called movement that claims divinity show value of love for the unseen, and if they exhibit this love by maintaining a balance for that which is love as against that which is evil. Then they'll have a better testimonial as a "good movement"

Life seen

Do the claims of their belief-system help to maintain the balance of love amongst every life that share this earth? If yes! then good! else when one begins to see cases of hidden practises amongst them that can be identified as being also used by perpetriators of evil then my friend questions should be asked.

Jesus my Christ stands to value Love, does/did OOO do?. . .canisma's quest exactly!

Bro lets not have a way of twisting things around it could be perceived as immature! smiley

Pls did you read where i wrote this?

Now i know some pals may not see anything wrong in any of those prophesies listed above. . .I dont too. . .but then the question is: do material things ever add value to the spiritual man? In one of my discourse with a man of God on the issue, he said there was nothing wrong afterall they were all prophesies. . .and i was like, Prophesies? prophesies to buy a car? that today is and tomorrow no more. . .Is that what you call good prophesy?
Jo, my point is that to a spiritual man, prophesies are meant to edify his spiritual needs. whatever happened to the needs of the spiritual man. why is the church deviating towards materialism more than their spiritual needs. Yes everyone needs a car, everyone needs a better job. But was this what we were admonished to pursue after?

All the declarations or prophecies these men made, where they given to build the spiritual wellbeing of their members or to make them feel good. Little wonder, Christians barely even understand the true essence of their call.

Almost every gullible christian today believes the reason to go to church is either to get God give them a car, a house, a new job. Agbaje, pls where are the messages of Love in the sermons we receive today? where are the messages of peace and forgiviness for our neighbors preached today?

Rather what we see today are psychological and motivational teachings, someone stands on the altar and tells you

: Brethren my topic today is the 7keys to prosperity, 14 steps to unleashing your potentials, 3secrets to ur next miracle and so on. Comeon Jo talk to me.

Rom 14:17-20

17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,

18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and approved by men.

19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

Joagbaje:
What do you say about Eli prophecy to Hannah that she would have a son. Or  samuel prophecy, that Saul would be king. Or Elijah prophecy that food will be cheap tomorrow, or of the abundance of rain. Or Apostle Paul that declared "my God shall suply all your need"  Before we just continue to criticize ministers do we understand their perspective. That is why God is cautioning us on judgmentalism.

Prophecy simply means to speak by divine inspiration . And a man can prophesy by faith also according to his knowledge in the plan of God. I'm not aware if these men you mention don't preach or teach that members should grow spiritually or get saved. I don't deny that everything can be abused, but we should leave judgement of what we don't know to God.
First of all before I reply you i will quote you a scripture and I'll use that as the basis for my personal understanding of what God excepts of you and Me.

John 4:24 - God is a Spirit being and any who will worship Him must do so in spirit (spiritual form) and in truth (true knowledge).

From the verse above, we I can deduce that the onus of man's existence is to WORSHIP his Maker (better still GOD in this context). So what then is worship? - worship in a quick one is the expression of devotion(give service)and reverence (give fear)and adoration(give love) to a deity.

Jo, you must understand that the only way to relate with this God that Jesus the Christ showed us, is only by means of worship. Inotherwords a true child of God must be spiritual in every sense of the word spiritual if a true relationship must be established.

That said I'll answer your questions n views

Joagbaje:
What do you say about Eli prophecy to Hannah that she would have a son. Or  samuel prophecy, that Saul would be king. Or Elijah prophecy that food will be cheap tomorrow, or of the abundance of rain. Or Apostle Paul that declared "my God shall suply all your need"
Eli did not prophecy to Hannah, rather he prayed with her

1 Sam 1:17 Then Eli said, Go in peace, and may the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him.

And to Samuel, i dont think what he did was prophecy but rather he anointed him and gave him directions on what to do afterwards. But even if it was prophecy then what we should both ask is: Was it given to edify saul materially? or to build him spiritually?. . .taking note of this statement in vs.6 of 1.Sam.10 "Then the Spirit of the Lord will come upon you mightily, and you will show yourself to be a prophet with them; and you will be turned into another man"

And as per the food supply, it was Elisha not Elijah that spake on the supply of food, and his words were meant to edify the believing ~ which is where i still stand that Prophesies are meant to make people grow better in the journey of the spiritual man . Elisha's prophesy was meant to make the people have food but to make them believe in God.

And now to the declaration of Paul >>My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory

Ask yourself, what is this God's riches in glory?. Is it the abundance of car or skyscrapers or materialistic things? or the expressions of love, inner peace and joy we radiate when we soar thru' life having Christ in us?.

And to add, Judgmentalism is only an attitude for babes, discernment is a gift for the sons of God.
Christianity EtcRe: OLUMBA OLUMBA version-Jesus, Living Physically Among Us Today ? by Tonyet1(m): 12:00pm On Jan 14, 2011
Messages of the OOO are those of mysticism - they believe the founder is a powerful deity (better still God himself) who's come to redeem only a fold *what marvels me is that why would 90% of these redeemed be of the efik descent, got me wondering why they would be specifically chosen to go to heaven* and the folds are to enjoy spiritual fellowship with only olumba and in return he rewards them with his powers to help them manage their individual lives.

Inotherwords, they believe you must be a part of them before they let you enjoy what they do.

Again, symbolisms are a way to go with them, certain instruments and materials associated with occultism are used of them. All their spiritual activities are esoteric and practises are never brought to the limelight. whereas we know that one true test of every transparent religion is the williness to express their practises to the world.

Now i believe when they say that seclusion is the mother of self-discovery. If there were any movement so filled with deceipt I will say mine will take the lead.

The errors within my faith-confines gets too appauling as the day passes by. I doubt it if any other religion or sect make the amount of clarion call for money and material things than does the pentecostal churches. Pls read this:

In the year 2011 you will make so much money like you have never seen. . .the crowd: "Ameeeeeeeeeen"

In the year 2011 every little job will become big jobs in Jesus name. . .the crowd replied: "Ameeeeen"

In the year 2011 every boss that hates your face will not see peace in Jesus name

Your accounts will explode, your business will meet new people, I prophesy new cars, I prophesy new houses, I prophesy new jobs, I prophesy government contracts

and the list goes on! *excerpts from 4churches i took the time to pay a worship visit to satisfy my foolish quest to wit - My fear for my faith confine*

folks it will amaze you to know that there was never a time any of these Men of God took a time to teach their subjects on the value of love (which remains the greatest treasure of the divine and mankind) nor on the value of tolerance neither on anything of spiritual values.

1 Cor 14:3 But one who prophesies and preaching the messages of God helps others grow in the Lord TLB

Prophesies are meant to make people grow better in the journey of the spiritual man and not to get a car that even a sinner can get thru' hardwork. Everything is becoming too artificial. . .make them feel good syndrome is hovering over my faith-confines. . .I discovered that christians dont even read the bible which is suppose to be our tool for growth. . .all they ever clamour are for words to make them feel good temporarily. . .they need someone to tell them they will build a sky-scraper before they die.

@Poster,

Yeah it hurts i know. . .but I'll take you to be matured and as such pls dont be in a hurry to take rash decisions. She just acted like everyother human being with feelings.

1. Probably she must have been threatened by the boss for so long until she gave in to his lust and greed. This bosses are wicked. . .you have to see the way they pride over it in PHcity

2. Or like someone said up here. . .attractions and feelings grow with people we spend more time with and as such she must have been a victim.

3. Or ought i say she must have needed of you her conjugal right at some point in time and you werent there to give her afterall she has not said her part of the story even though infidelity is unjustifiable but it has its point of origin (root). . .and the lists goes on and on

My advice:

Do not let divorce be a part of your options, u dont want to send her packing trust me! you know why?. . .the memories of her act will linger and you might end up depressed as being a failure.

Mal 2:16 "I hate divorce," says the LORD God of Israel, "and I hate a man's covering himself with violence as well as with his garment," says the LORD Almighty. So guard yourself in your spirit, and do not break faith. NIV

She should quit the job immediately. . .let her spend sometime with your parents while you heal your wounds. . .trust me you will heal with time and regain your feelings for her and forgiviness will come so cheap.

Sorry it hurts any woman can be a victim!

Very true what you posted in OP, but you cannot expect nigerians to really count the cost of christianity before attempting to become christians.
Please let of properly consider the verse of Luke above and then look at nigeria.
And that is if many who call themselves Christians really understand the true essence of the entity called 'Christian'.

Lately i have begun by asking questions like what does it mean to become a Christian. If Christianity was alabout making all the monies in life, building and living in the best and finest of houses and riding the sleekest of cars, then bill gates et al would have been called 'modern father of christianity'. I somehow believe these MOGs know what they are doing secretly.  embarassed May God help his church

I am not attacking Tonye-T. I just don't like this idea of evil speaking against the church. Unbelievers are watching and getting hardened . Thats 1. The second one is if we have to judge , it should be by the word , we should not condemn others .
Agbaje *you really seem to quick to draw conclusions atimes my friend*

Now i see why you've been abit harsh at others since the inception of the thread. There is this thing with humans and our belief-system and that is in a bid to protect (defensive) our beliefs we unconsciously end up wrongly offensive.

I dont see where the OP spake any evil against any church so needless your undue biase, besides we both stand for the same course - the love in the faith. . .isnt it?

But rather the thread is a move to create sobers amongst we christian faithfuls and ask thoughtful questions about the future of the christian faith within the pentecostal confines.

And to say unbelievers are watching therefore we should keep quiet, describes the hallmark of hypocrisy (not referring to you my friend) you know why? because true Christianity is practised outside. . .let your light so shine before men that they should see your good works. It is because we have remained ignorant to this fact that wolves are disguising amongst us and deceiving many and we keep silent.

Jo, Christianity is a vocal movement. . .Christianity is a people who will never remain silent and allow the influences of darkness becloud righteousness. . .inotherwords WE ARE OUTSPOKEN!

Tell me we should remain quiet and i will wonder why Jesus will publicly criticize the "godly-men" of his days calling them white washed sepulchre, using physical wipes on them and publicly rebuking his own disciples for their exercise of little faith.

And Agbaje pls who is talking about Oyedepo or others?, i dont think me, maybe you should pls go back and understand the thread and post in a good and constructive opinion . . .the absence of this is what i call evil-speaking. wink

#2 Question that indicates our declination is the absence of SPIRITUALITY- WHERE IS THE SPIRITUALITY PART OF CHRISTIANITY? I have been asking this question everywhere i find christian faithfuls gathered and no one seems to offer an answer yet. . .

The biblos says:
God is a SPIRIT. . .they that worship God must worship GOD in SPIRIT.

If this scripture is valid why shouldnt Christianity be centered on Spirituality?. Why shouldnt we be willing to serve and relate with 'this spirit' the spiritual way?

what is spirituality?

Spirituality (should not be mistaken for Spiritualism) can refer to an ultimate or immaterial reality;

[1] an inner path enabling a person to discover the essence of their being; or the “deepest values and meanings by which people live.”

[2] Spiritual practices, including meditation, prayer and contemplation, are intended to develop an individual's inner life; such practices often lead to an experience of connectedness with a larger reality, yielding a more comprehensive self; with other individuals or the human community; with nature or the cosmos; or with the divine realm.

[3] Spirituality is often experienced as a source of inspiration or orientation in life.

[4] It can encompass belief in immaterial realities or experiences of the immanent or transcendent nature of the world.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirituality

Can any 21st century Christian truly walk on water?

Can we really pray for a blind eyes to open?

Can we multiply 5 physical loaves to feed 5000 physical men?

Can we call a man's spirit to come back from the dead after 5days?

Can we turn atleast 1cup of water to wine?

As i write this i feel like sobbing because nothing of the above listed is ever practised within the confines of the pentecostal movement. All we do is "Jamborees", "razzmatazzes", you see people running into stadias like folks running to pick subscription forms for Dangote shares offer only to go home and come back to give cooked-up testimonies as to gain the admiration or better still attention of their demi-gods.

OOLADEGBU I must say a big thanks for this ad.

There lieth indeed a big onus on true faithfuls atlarge to retain that which is fast diminishing (and that includes you and me). The Church (The people) is unconsciously sliding into a state one would describe as
"The hallucination state" - meaning we are busy preaching 'something' to the world we barely have little or no knowledge and experience about.Infact am compelled to tag it "the seven sons of sceva church".

Imagine simple issues like salvation, repentance, justification and other more cannot be adequately trashed by an average christian.

A research carried out by APV (a leading poll center in canada in March, 2010) showed that 43% of Catholics(devote catholics) read their bibles from Gen. - Rev within a year, An anglican did better with an average of 72% for a true christian, but 68% of Pentecostals spend a year not reading through the books of the Holy bible which means only 32% read their bibles and that is if they even understand what they read at all. Pathetic! very pathetic for Pentecostals!.

When further quest was made to root out the reasons for this figures,it was told that Catholics do less reading of the bible and more on their sects' manuals, while an average pentecostals do more of listening to tapes and daily devotionals at the expense of the bible.

For instance, a pentecostal would listen to a tape from his pastor on dressing (dressing is just one in a many) and swallow it hook-line as a new doctrine and will never believe what the next pastor will teach even if the later might be saying the truth. As far as the former is concerned his pastor is never wrong and therefore needless reading the bible to search truth for oneself, because such a person might feel searching the bible might be an act of doubting his pastor, this is the reason why we have so much movements within the movement. Everyone believes he/she is right and others are wrong.

What forms your opinion on this? Are you talking about your own church or another church? As far as am concerned , You Should know more about your church than the system of another. If you're talking about your own church system, your assertion is still subject to be judged by the Word of God.
your own church. . .my own church. . .his own church. . .her own church. . .their own church. . .and the division continues and the faith suffers from internal perpetriators who knows the sheep will rather choose to remain silent and unpertubed. Joe my good brother the quest remains that : DO YOU THINK THE MOVEMENT THAT BELIEVES IN THE WORKS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WILL MAINTAIN ITS ESSENCE COME 10YRS from NOW?

@AIO,

Pastor AIO:
You're talking as if these things are new developments. Have these things not always been the case? Has it always been the case that you (plural, not you specifically) have been so 'naive and backward, that any charlatan could utter bombastic claims', and you would accept.
To say "these things have been the case" would be more like generalizing the movement to have been faulty from its origin. . .that i may not quite agree.

Because:

The advent of the pentecostal movement in Nigeria during the late 70's especially with the Assemblies of God brought much of a message of peace and Love to a dying people groping in pains and hatred. The Chrisitianity i witnessed practised by this movement at that time (*though not a member yet*) was something more of
"study and practise" and not "preach to practise" like we have it today, although an average member today will still argue that the former is still the case. . .this is very untrue!

During that time the faithfuls were saved, groomed, and taught the value of building the inner man. Folks paid no attention on what to put on, or even on the magnificience of edifices. The Nigerian early Christians were taught to practise the word within themselves and live the Christ-life outside, better put THEY LOVED EVERYONE BUT MADE FRIENDSHIP AMONGST THEMSELVES ONLY such that the unbelieving could see true radiations of affections and want to join the movement.

When they(unbelievers) eventually join, they needed no one to teach them how to love because they already knew what true affection was alabout though still babes, doctrines were still maintained and characteristics of the movements marked hallmarks. When someone repented he/she was taught to go back and make peace with everyone and by that extend the
"affectionate message" and the winning continues *this to me was the true essence of Christainity*.

Today:

Later into the early 90's some profound MOGs as we'll call them, soon started mixing charismatism into the transparent substance and then the true movement begun her dearth albeit slowly. . .questionable acts crept in and settled unquestioned. . .lucre, materialism, lust became the order of the day, faithfuls were cajoled for being poor and messages from pulpits came forth: "poverty is a disease, therefore poor folks are victims".

Now one could stop and expect things will get better with time and the true message will find her way back, but opposite is what I see. Every year I join concerned faithfuls to pray but it seems the case is only getting worse.

Digress: And if someone thinks "tithing" of which i remain a staunch is one vice of this movement. . .that my friend I'll say is wrong!

Another disturbing trend. . .Desire for the Extraordinary

The many problems associated with fringe charismatic groups stem from one root – a lust for the sensational. Biblical truth is not enough for the typical Pentecostal. There must be more. As a result we are always looking for something new. Caring little about doctrine, proper exegesis or biblical integrity – these are just not spiritual enough. All we want is more anointing. . .more power. . .more visions. . .revelations – or any semblance of such – genuine or fake. I think Eve was the first Pentecostal.

I read ust recently in Trinidad (2000), a particular minister was being heralded from the most renowned pulpits in the country. He had allegedly inherited a multi-billion dollar fortune, and had promised to give financially to churches. As a result some pastors were giving assurances that “there would be no more poor people in Trinidad”, and “When the Hindus see how much money there is in Christ, they would not be able to remain Hindu”. When I first heard of him, the very first thought that entered my mind was “What is this guy really up to?” Time would authenticate my suspicions. This pastor subsequently lured some of the more affluent members of other churches, and formed his own congregation of “elites”. Nothing ever materialized of his alleged fortune. He eventually spent some time in jail and is awaiting trial for fraud.

Why do these things happen to Pentecostals over and over again? Aren’t we supposed to be the discerning ones? The truth is that we are so naïve and backward, that any charlatan could utter bombastic claims, and we would accept it without checking the facts and scrutinizing the whole story.

Time keep failing me over here!

Joagbaje:
But some of the issues you raised will require clarification.
Issues raised are the ones that proves prevalent amongst the Pentecostal movement movement you and I both believe in.

Joagbaje:
There is nothing wrong in reverence and respect for ministers of God. It is purely scriptural. The bible say to "ESTEEM THEM HIGHLY FOR THEIR WORK SAKE"
Brother I quite agree with you there as i had that scriptures (1Thess. 5:13) in mind while making my assertion. Recall in my stance i didnt say they should not be esteemed highly, but what becomes of the fate of their institutions at their demise? You and I know that alot of assistances within our belief-system today are chosen on the ground that they share common interest in the lucre and not on the welfare of the faithfuls. true or false?

If true, so what then happens when these institutions are left on the hands of these greedy men. My stance exactly! bearing in mind the large calvary their institutions command amongst the faithfuls in Nigeria and the world at large today.

Joagbaje:
But those things you listed as flaws in the church is a little shocking. It is not a flaw to build a decent place of worship For God. God himself demanded the use of Gold and other things for his place of worship. It is a honour to the God we serve.
At the expense of the little livelihood of the faithfuls?
