Try shopping at the Spanish stores, in the meantime. A lot of them have African foods like yams, pepper, some form of powdered flour you can make fufu with, etc. You'll be surprised how many African foods you can find in a Hispanic store.

If you're hungry for things like pounded yam- you can also substitute with thick mashed potato.

Just buy the packaged potato flakes at any store, add water, stir and microwave or cook on the stove if you prefer.  Then turn as if you're making eba. My mom loves this and often has it instead of poundo yam.

Most grocery stores sell okro and veggies. Turnip greens are ok. So are mustard greens and kale. You'll also find spinach.

With all that and some meat for stew, you should be good to go until you find an African store.

for garri, amala and egusi, you could search for African stores online. I couldnt find any, actually. But check your yellow pages- you may find some listings there.

The Portuguese seem to have entered through Lagos/Warri to Benin while further along the coastline the British and Dutch may have made first contact.

The Dutch especially were coming from Ghana.

Hmmm, why are women considered "minorities" when they are more than men in population?
@Richy,
Some people find it difficult to understand when they say "minorities and women". Because they sometimes lump minorities and women together for affirmative action doesn't mean women are minorities. tpiah got it all wrong.
Romance › Re: How Much Of Their Culture Would You Adopt, Is There A Limit? by tpiah: 5:31pm On May 11, 2009
Most times its when the partner is still tied to their relatives wrapper that they insist on the SO adapting to their culture in their bid to transform her (him) into a foreign version of their "homegirls".

If the man is more or less independent and well adapted, it wont bother him so much since after all he has his reasons for not marrying from his own culture.

But for the sake of peace, if the guy is that way, then by all means go the extra mile.

Thats the thing with some oyibo men. They'll be the ones trying to learn as much as possible about their partner's culture, instead of it being the other way round.
Romance › Re: What's Your View On Polygamous Relationship? by tpiah: 5:24pm On May 11, 2009
Does anyone know why diehard traditionalists consider polygamy an integral part of African tradition?

Going back to ancient Roman times, polygamy still wasnt the norm even as far back as that. So why did Africans insist on sticking to polygamy as a way of life (along with refusing to create any form of indigenous documented history but that's another story)?

Is there more to this polygamic stuff than meets the eye? Is it due to the hardship of African life or just a way of controlling women as a means to an end?

Why do some men find monogamy so foreign to their natures? Religion aside.

And is polygamy an Arab influence since most of Africa is directly under the same?

Harrods the most expensive store in the UK, is owned by an Egyptian. Does that make Britain Egyptian? huh

Lagos is home to many tribes, not only Yoruba and Igbo. However, anyone doubting the original owners of lagos are Yoruba, needs to stop smoking weed and get into rehab!

End of story!

Politics › Re: Who Are Minorities In Nigeria by tpiah: 4:17pm On May 11, 2009
and its all about votes these days

A minority is a sociological group that does not constitute a politically dominant voting majority of the total population of a given society

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minority_group
Politics › Re: Who Are Minorities In Nigeria by tpiah: 4:16pm On May 11, 2009
in western countries, women are also considered minorities.

Being a minority doesnt always have to be a bad thing if and only if, it creates opportunities for advancement.

http://academic.udayton.edu/race/01race/minor01.htm

What is a Minority Group?

A subordinate group whose members have significantly less control or power over their lives than members of a dominant or majority group

Not limited to mathematical minority: example women, Blacks in South Africa, Blacks in Mississippi and South Carolina in the 1920's

Interchangeable with subordinate group

A group that experiences a narrowing of opportunities (success, education, wealth, etc) that is disproportionately low compared to their numbers in the society
Minorities can be gender, religion or ethnicity based. And they dont always demonstrate every single characteristic listed here. But they may fit at least half.
