gentlegenius: It depends on how you define 'education'. If what is written on the pages of our academic textbooks is what you call 'education', then you'll continue to believe that school is the only or best place for a Nigerian to get educated. Now here's an example... The richest black woman in the world, Fulorunsho Alakija has never graduated from any higher institution. But if you've ever heard her speak, I will like to ask you: Would you say she's not educated? Again, most of our music stars and comedians has never graduated from any school, but when you listen to them, will you say that they are not educated? Have you ever watched people like David Beckham or Lionel Messi take a free kick? That's education. They were educated in the art of taking free kicks even though they have never been to school. The word EDUCATION is coined from a Greek word 'educo' which means to induce from within. Therefore, education means to develop the inner qualities, talent and skills that lies within us. With this definition, it is obvious that no academic institution in Nigeria can properly educate you. Academics is different from education. What schools can offer you at best is Academics, not EDUCATION. This is why Mark Twain dropped out of school and when asked why, he said "I don't want schooling to interfere with my education". Think about this. You don't seem to get my point. When I say you need to be properly educated, I don't mean you need to be properly schooled. For those Americans you listed there, I made a point that I'd hate schooling if I was born in a society like theirs. Here's my argument if you don't understand it. If you grow up in the southwest for example without any schooling, it will be by chance if you have any of those skills developed. People keep mentioning vocational skills in Nigeria right? Go to southwest and see severally trained technicians who are blind to opportunities in their field because they don't have an exposed mind. Education exposes the mind and in most part of Nigeria, school is the only place where you can get something close to education even though you have to redirect yourself into what you're getting educated about. |

gentlegenius: There's a big difference education and schooling. You can go to school and still not be educated... You can also be educated without going to school. About 90% of Nigerians who graduated from schools are not well educated. Even those who studied so hard and make the best grades in school are still lacking modern day education because 95% of what they were taught in school is outdated, hence, they were busy acquiring expired knowledge. Nowadays, even those who made the best results in school are no longer celebrated or offered jobs because but those who harness their talents or acquire useful skills even without going to school are always celebrated. This is a lesson every youth of this 21st century must learn or remain a mediocre in the world. Well, here's my point: Education outside the school would have been perfect as you can go at your own and according to your interest. But in Nigeria, we don't have materials to give you independent education like American and other western countries. You still need to go to school in Nigeria and get properly educated. But as a Nigerian, it'd be difficult for you to get educated without schooling. |

ShakurM: Good point but do you know the history of English language bro but guess what nobody owns shit no more. Yoruba is a native language, English is not tho we have American and British as the two runners in matters of dialect. American - white, black, latino etc. And it happens naturally that blacks would have their lingo, whites would , latinos would. So I'm gonna speak the way I want. Yes... but the white man would want us to follow a strict pattern of speaking the language not considering differences in individuals speaking the language. All ends in one part feeling painted as inferior. |

HarryDuce: Hmm. This argument isn't quite convincing bro. You can as well argue why American English is different from the one spoken in Britain. The populations are both majority white after all. The differences are great but it's still English. I think you should also consider the fact that blacks didn't really mingle with the majority until about 60 years ago. They spoke English years before then with all the substandard education, no other language. Whatever it is then... I'm leaving that for African-Americans and their American counterparts. |

ShakurM: Aren't you a Nigerian? Talk your own talk. Just like pidgin English, won't be fair if a black American bashes your pidgin English or what not that you speak. Talk your talk. Except I'm taking a written standard Exam that's specific. I'm gonna keep talking my talk Be it as it may, the white man would have told us how to speak Yoruba, Hausa etc had it been in his power to do so. But this is English language with all the rules of usage and so on. Meanwhile, a typical black man can be said to be very creative when it comes to language. Now, using this creativity for the white man's language, is that not language creativity mismatched? |

iClef: We are still talking the same thing. Everyone needs education, but everyone doesn't need school. School and education are two different things. This is what most people don't know.
The only people that are meant to go to school are those who will end up learning a skill that won't require them to look for a job after graduation, instead, people will come to them. Someone mentioned Architect and other disciplines.
Most great men of today are not great through their certificates, but through their skills or talents. I'm not discarding school (it boosts one's confidence and pride), but I want Nigerian youths to know that if school is the only thing they have to offer, they'll continue to suffer. Talent or skill is the way forward. It's never too late to acquire a lucrative skill NOW. If I was born in the Western world, I'd have stop schooling by secondary school and look for books that I'm interested and I'd be proudly standing shoulder high with people who've made great feats in various fields like physics, philosophy etc but in Nigeria, except in schools, is there an environment that provides for self education? If not for internet, there are some books I wouldn't know exist today and they're TOO important for me. For a Nigerian, school education and skill acquisition is the way and not one without the other. So we can't wave away schooling at all. |

We're used to it already in this country. That's why they feel important when they do "some" of their basic functions. They make us ponder on the feeling "what if he didn't do anything?". Good governance will begin when things like fixing roads etc get less attention while life improving policies are given adequate priority. |

And the good thing is, all the CU graduates I know are very decent and disciplined... So leave that thing o...let them continue to be strict... It is for the general good. In that regard, I'd say thumbs up to CU. We're so used to the norms in our society that whenever someone makes a rule of engagement and people break it, we'll be shouting up and down. It doesn't matter what people call CU, they made rules and guidelines recognized by Nigerian Government, NUC and even the international community and you decide to abide by it when you make up your mind to study there. If you're now being punished for flouting the rules, why should we be ranting against the school? This is why God will never answer some prayers. |

The same way many airports in Nigeria are suffering from neglect, Alakia airport has also been neglected starting from Bola Ige's period as the state governor. In case you don't know, neglect is what made what would have become the second airport in the city, Samonda airport to become the most expensive residential area in the city. |

Lack of consistent physical planning by several administrations is what rotted Ibadan to the level that one sees. IB is so big that you'd think you've seen all unless you've actually seen the length and breath of it. Ibadan is just a city with different world like a caricature of Nigeria itself. If you are in the poorer part, you'd think there's nothing else in the city, it is dead etc but when you rich the elite or industrial part of the city, you'd be proud of Nigeria. With all the ancient look and modernity rising up more and more, Ib is really cool. |

Westernization has affected everything so much that things Africans in ages past did, that made them live long in good health, are now abominable to us. Not mine, am gonna teach my kids about morals. Then I kiss their mother right in front of them. Kids bought up without morals are found trying shiiits like that. As you can see, I didn't make any conclusion. And as a matter of fact, morals mean nothing to children of age 6 and below who might be playing dirty with some other kids because of what they see their parents do. When you're invited by your children's school (I pray it won't be general PTA) and your children's experiments are reported to you, I hope you won't get embarrassed. No matter how civilzed we become, we should always give space and know that we're still in Nigeria and Africa. |
