A STITCH IN TIME WOULD HAVE SAVED DR. RICHARD The unfortunate incident that led to the death of my dear brother, Dr. Richard Adelani Idowu was one that we could have avoided, if we paid closer attention to quality healthcare, not just in Ejigbo but in Osun State generally. I was at the scene of the incident and as a matter of fact, I sustained minor wounds from the accidental discharge myself, but that was the first of many unfortunate incidences that occurred that night. After RAI got hit by that bullet, then began the rush to get him to a Hospital and save his life. The State General Hospital in Ejigbo was not an option as we were well aware of the dysfunctional state of the hospital, due to a shortage of staff. We proceeded to a Private Hospital in Ejigbo but the service there was also nothing to write home about. I had to give money to a staff of the Hospital to buy fuel so they could power their Generator. There was again no competent hands on the ground to give him necessary emergency care and we left the Hospital for another private Hospital in Ejigbo. By the time we got there, and coupled with all of the lapses in this second hospital too, we lost a man we should have easily saved. We lost an illustrious son to the dysfunctional state of our healthcare facilities, both public and private. Ordinarily, the State General Hospital should be our go-to Hospital, but it is a known fact to every Ejigbo dweller that the Hospital is extremely short-staffed. This should have been corrected with the employment of 1500 Health Workers by the Oyetola administration, but the current government canceled the recruitment of the much-needed health workers. Since that step, the General Hospital in Ejigbo has remained a beautiful edifice without qualified hands to run it. This is unfortunate! The private hospitals in Ejigbo also need to urgently improve their services. Since the death of Dr. Richard, I have heard of several avoidable deaths of that nature that have occurred in those hospitals in the past. The community stakeholders on the Board of those hospitals in Ejigbo need to urgently work on hiring more qualified manpower so that we do not continue to lose people to avoidable situations. After we lost Ade Ori Okin, I proceeded to take care of my own wound and found it quite disheartening that I had to arrange for the purchase of tetanus injection through a private Nurse, instead of established hospitals. When all of the hospitals in a town do not have ordinary tetanus injections, we know that we have reached a point where we must all pause, reflect, and take urgent action. In the absence of efficient government intervention, I call on Ejigbo indigenes at home and abroad to come together to build an efficient healthcare delivery system that serves our community optimally, to prevent these unfortunate losses. We owe a duty to ourselves to ensure we do not lose any more lives to this failed healthcare system that we have today. It is excruciating that we lost our dear brother, Dr. Richard Adelani Idowu (Ade Ori Okin) to the sad occurrence. Still, we must now work tenaciously to ensure that we do not fail ourselves in such a painful manner ever again. A timely stitch would have saved him and we must now ensure that the people of our town get that stitch in time whenever the need arises. May God bless Ejigbo land and help us make the right decisions for our father land. Engr. David Ayodele Asalu (Asler)

Prolonged Public Water Supply Failure Stirs Reactions In Osogbo By Akintunde Madamidola THERE has been a prolonged public water supply failure to many areas in Osogbo, Osun State, findings by OSUN DEFENDER have revealed. The water supply failure has subjected some residents of the state capital to stress as they have to find alternative potable water at far distance. It was gathered that the residents have been experiencing irregular water supply since June last year. Areas affected are Estate, Alekuwodo, Tinumola, Offa-Prime, Isale Osun, Jaleyemi, Kobo and Ayetoro, among other areas in Osogbo. Speaking with OSUN DEFENDER, a resident of Offa-prime, Toyin Adeoye, said it had been seven months that supply from the water corporation had come to the area, noting that residents of the area were currently facing water crisis because of the dry season. Adeoye said: “It is almost seven months that public water was supply to this area. We only have a well as source of water which is almost dried up because it serves other people in this neighbourhood. “It has been so stressful. We cannot drink the well water and price of sachet water has increased. We have to go to far distance to get portable water. That is what we have been enduring since seven month ago.” A resident of Alekuwodo, Mrs Sarat Ajiboye who spoke with OSUN DEFENDER, said: “Our community is grappling with a pressing issue – a severe shortage of water that is significantly impacting our daily lives. “The scarcity has reached a point where residents are facing challenges in doing basic activities, such as cooking and maintaining proper hygiene. It is not just an inconvenience; it’s becoming a serious concern that affects the overall well-being of everyone in our neighborhood. “Many residents, myself included, are finding it increasingly difficult to navigate daily routines without a reliable and consistent water supply. This situation not only hampers our ability to live a comfortable life but also poses potential health risks. “In light of these challenges, we earnestly appeal to the authorities to prioritise and address this issue urgently. Our community’s well-being is at stake, and a swift resolution is vital to ensuring that we can access water reliably, meeting our basic needs and maintaining a healthy living environment for all residents.” The water supply failure, according to findings by OSUN DEFENDER, may be as a result of the pollution of Osun River by illegal miners and disconnection of water pipes due to construction of major roads in the state capital. However, residents have charged the ministry in charge to do something as soon as possible to help them out of the situation. It would be recalled that Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration in April 2023 approved the rehabilitation of selected waterworks and pipeline networks across the state. Adeleke approved the immediate upgrade of pipeline networks of both the Ede and Osogbo waterworks alongside the repairs and recharging of water filter media at Iwo and Eko-Ende waterworks. He also approved funds for the purchase of water treatment chemicals while most of the broken old pipes are being replaced with modern durable pipes known as HDPE pipes to improve water supply to all the nooks and crannies of the state. https://www.osundefender.com/prolonged-public-water-supply-failure-stirs-reactions-in-osogbo/

INTERVIEW: Adeleke Not Running An Inclusive Govt – Osun IPAC Chair, Adebayo Mr. Adewale Adebayo is a young businessman, politician and Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council in Osun State. He was the candidate of Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Osun Central Senatorial District for the National Assembly election in March 2023. In this interview with OSUN DEFENDER, he expressed concerns on Nigeria’s electoral system and the fate of a third force. Excerpt: WHAT has been the contribution of IPAC to the growth of democracy and a violent-free political atmosphere in Osun State? Despite few isolated incidents, Inter-Party Advisory Counci played a crucial role in fostering a peaceful and conducive political atmosphere before and after elections in Osun State. We actively engaged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure transparency in the pre-electioneering processes, emphasising the importance of a level playing field for all political parties. IPAC also plays an important role in promoting democracy and reducing political violence in Osun State. One way we do this is by facilitating dialogue and cooperation between political parties. For example, we organise regular meetings between party leaders to discuss issues of mutual concern and find ways to work together. We consistently advocate issue-based campaigns, urging political parties to focus on policy discussion rather than resorting to violence or personal attacks. Through radio and print media, we disseminate messages of peace, emphasizing that political parties should prioritize the wellbeing of the state and its citizens above their individual ambitions. In our capacity as IPAC, we intervened in intra-party conflicts; we specifically addressed the tension between the “TOP” and “ILERI OLUWA” groups within the APC. We issued statements calling for restraint and emphasizing that Osun State should not be turned into a battleground for personal or party interests. To further promote peace, we coordinated the signing of a peace accord by all political parties and their candidates. This agreement served as a commitment to peaceful conduct and respect for the electoral process. While it is regrettable that incidents of violence occurred during the general elections, particularly in Ilesa, IPAC’s contributions and advocacy for a peaceful electoral process undoubtedly played a significant role in mitigating potential conflicts and fostering a relatively peaceful political atmosphere in Osun State. You have spent three years as Chairman of IPAC, what are the challenges and success story of your administration? My time as IPAC Chairman has been both challenging and rewarding. One of the biggest challenge has been getting all the political parties to work together and put aside their differences. It’s been difficult to find common ground and build trust, but we’ve made some progress. One of the successes has been increasing voter turnout and civic engagement. We’ve worked to educate citizens about the importance of voting and to encourage them to participate in the political process. This has been very gratifying. Another challenge we’ve faced is the issue of campaign finance. There have been concerns about the influence of money in politics, and how it can distort the democratic process. IPAC has worked to promote transparency and accountability in campaign finance, and to ensure that all parties are following the rules and regulations. But this is an ongoing challenge, and it can be difficult to enforce the rules. You’re a known to be a critic of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration, is there anything personal between the two of you and is your stance not against IPAC objectives? I appreciate the opportunity to clarify a misconception that being a critic of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration does not stem from any personal issue between us. It is important to note that IPAC is not an opposition body, but rather a platform for political parties to engage in democratic processes. As the Chairman of IPAC, it is my responsibility to provide an objective analysis of the policies and actions of all political leaders in the state. However, it is essential to distinguish between personal opinions and the broader goals of IPAC, which are centered around promoting democratic values and constructive political engagement. Is IPAC relating its observations about government’s policies and programmes to the Adeleke administration? No, the present government has not been running an inclusive government. Even if there are observations, the present government has not given room for IPAC to relate its observations about government’s policies and programmes. The commissioner for Inter-Party Affairs has not called for a single meeting since he assumed office. We believe that open dialogue is crucial to ensuring that the government is responsive to the needs and concerns of the people of the State. IPAC as a body will continue to engage them in a constructive and respectful manner, and also do more by engaging citizens directly, beyond just communicating with the government. We want to hear directly from the people of Osun State about their concerns and priorities, so that we can better advocate for their interests. What is your assessment of the Adeleke’s administration in one year? In one year, the Adeleke administration has shown potential for growth and progress. However, there is still room for improvement in areas like security, inclusive governance, transparency and effective implementation of policies to ensure the welfare and development of the people of Osun State. You contested for Osun Central Senatorial election in 2023; how will you react to the outcome of that poll? I am grateful for the opportunity to run for public office and to share my vision for the future of our state. While I am disappointed that I was not elected, I believe that the experience has been valuable, and I will continue to work hard to serve my community in other ways. With your experience in the Osun 2022 governorship and 2023 general elections, do you think a third force will make its way in Nigerian political system? The rise of third force or independent candidates has been a topic of discussion in recent years, and I think it is an important conversation to have. There are many factors that make it difficult for third force candidates to be successful in Nigeria, including the dominance of the two major political parties and the high cost of running for office. However, I do think that third force candidates can play an important role in shaping the political debate and holding the major parties accountable. One thing that is crucial for the success of third force candidates is the need for electoral reform. The current system of voting and party registration is not conducive for the emergence of new political parties and independent candidates. I think we need to reform the electoral process to make it easier for third force candidates to run and for voters to have more choices. The dominant political parties – APC and PDP have ruled Nigeria for more than 20 years and majority of people have expressed dissatisfaction about their administrations. Do you think a new political party will do better? Is true that many people have expressed frustration with the performance of the two major parties over the last 20 years. While it is hard to say for certain how a new party would perform in power, I do think it is important to have more choices and competitions in the political system. More choices would force the major parties to be more responsive to the needs of the people, and it would also give citizens more options when it comes to choosing their leaders. Another interesting question is whether a new party would be able to govern effectively. Even if a new party was to gain power, it would face a number of challenges, including entrenched interests and bureaucratic inertia. They would need to build a capable team of leaders and civil servants, and they would need to develop effective strategies for tackling the country’s many problems. How will you describe the dominance of aged and older people in the Nigerian political space. Is there a better or brighter chance for the youth? The dominance of older people in Nigerian politics is often referred to as “gerontocracy,” and it’s a major issue that needs to be addressed. It’s not just about age; it is about the tendency of older politicians to cling to power and resist change. This can make it difficult for younger people to gain a foothold in the political system. However, I do think there is hope for the youth. There are a growing number of young people who are involved in politics, and they are using technology and social media to get their voices heard. You have not been supportive of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission activities recently. What is the issue between IPAC and OSIEC? IPAC has concerns regarding the transparency and fairness of the activities of OSIEC. We believe in the importance of free and fair elections, and it is imperative that OSIEC upholds these principles to ensure democratic processes are respected and upheld. IPAC is calling on OSIEC to be more open and to consult with stakeholders in the electoral process, including IPAC. Has IPAC been monitoring palliative provisions to the state and what is your comment about Governor Adeleke administration’s handling of the palliative programmes? IPAC has been monitoring the distribution of palliatives in Osun State, and we have noted some concerns. There have been reports of irregularities in the distribution of food items and other forms of assistance, and there is a lack of transparency in how the programs are being run. IPAC believes that the government needs to take more steps to ensure that the palliative programs are well-run and that they are reaching the people who need them most. What are the critical areas you want the state government to address in 2024? We believe that the state government should prioritize education, health care, and infrastructure development. These are critical areas that have a direct impact on the lives of people in the state. For example, the education system needs to be improved to provide a quality education for all children, and health care should be accessible and affordable for everyone. Infrastructure projects, such as roads and bridges, can create jobs and improve the economy. https://www.osundefender.com/interview-adeleke-not-running-an-inclusive-govt-osun-ipac-chair-adebayo/
