Yeah most of the migrants there with low paid jobs do not have good conditions. My friend has a good job with Barclays so condition and pay wise he is doing well, but he doesn't see it as a long term place to settle down and raise his kids. For those without good jobs they live like slaves with their passports seized from them. Lots of immigrants e.g from India have died in Qatar working under inhumane conditions to build stadiums for the world cup. nochildsplay: |
I agree with you. I got same impression, and a friend who lives there with a good job said it feels hollow and sterile. milychocs: |
I disagree. In my opinion those working as contract staff in Nigerian banks are pretty much on crap pay working in shitty conditions with little prospects to progress. How much do contract staff earn in Nigeria? maximum N70k so lets assume N1m annually which is $5k. Starting pay for tellers at Chase is about $15 per hour which is about $30k per annum full time. Someone on $30k pays about $5k on taxes for the year leaving just under $25k as take home. Barclays customer service start on about 13k GBP and after tax take home is just over 12k GBP. Also the proportion of contract staff in Nigerian banks to US or UK banks is very very high and ridiculous. According to their 2014 annual report, GTBank has only 3,340 permanent staff with the rest being contract staff. Compare this to the population of Nigeria at c 170m. I don't know where you got the impression that bankers in Nigerian earn more than the US or UK but it is so so wrong. If the person who has been offered N20 million has prospects for teller jobs in banks as an ND holder then N20m is a lot of money, but if he has prospects for higher paying and better jobs then not so much. Mcteeblack: |
Sorry i don't get. Do you mean banks in Nigeria pay more than Banks in the US? Yes i currently live and work in the US and no i haven't said it was easy to get an MBA but nothing good in life is easy. Also many of them who have good jobs pre MBA tend to get sponsored like my firm do with a commitment to return for 2 years which is a good deal for a top MBA. I also know some Nigerians who applied from Nigeria e.g. I know a few at Kellogg here in Chicago. Was sit easy? No. Was it worth it, yes and can they earn a lot more then then $100k (N20m), yes. As i said it all depends on where you are in life and the prospects open to you. For some the N20m makes more sense, for others it may not. Not sure If i got the point you are trying to make. If not can you elaborate? Btw if you meant banks in Nigeria pay more than banks in the US, then that is a HUGE joke. Mcteeblack: |
This is a perfect example of why i say it depends on where you are in life. As a 55 year old with a 30 mortgage his priority will be different from a 25 year old who just finished from University.

|
Well I do not know your mentee or his financial situation but him taking a loan to finish his house may not necessarily be because he is not doing well. Also you mention he already has a house he is paying a morgage on in London which means at least 2 properties. Are you saying if you get N20m you can buy a house in lekki and also London anyhow? No because N20m is just about 60k pounds. Also as a smart investor I will rather use a bank loan with very low interest to fund a house because it means my money is leveraged to earn me more returns. Anyway as i said i haven't said N20m is better than a green card or vice versa. All I am saying is it depends on the individual and many other factors. For some people the N20m will be a seed for multiplication, for others it will be wasted in a few years. For some a green card can be the pathway to successful careers, businesses etc, and for others it may be a pathway to a life of crap jobs and hustling. no one size fits all. lancee: |
Well I haven't said everybody earns such which is why I concluded by saying depends on where you fall. I do know a lot of Nigerians both in the UK and US who earn such same as i know lots who don't. As I said the attraction of N20m $100k depends on where you are at that point in life. If you have prospects for a successful career where you can earn a lot more then maybe not, but if you do not or have good business ideas then the money may make more sense. Also people make it sound like because you receive N20m means the money will be multiplied. Not really, people lose money everyday don't they Investments and businesses go wrong and fail everyday don't they? You will be surprised how quickly that money will dissapearr in the hands of some. All I am saying is there is no size fits all answer. It all depends on the individual, where he is in life and his prospects, goals and plans. lancee: |
While I agree that N20 million is a lot of money, basing your calculation on $10 per hour is not taking into consideration people with good jobs who earn more. I work in the Consulting sector and know people who work in Consulting and banking etc in the US who earn 6 figures and those quite senior who earn 7 figures in dollars. it all depends. MBA grads entering consulting start on $145k excluding bonus so will they be impressed with a one off $100k payment? That depends on the individual. For those who are earning lower level pay or who are business inclined and have good ideas, then you are right N20 million is something to be considered but it doesn't guarantee financial success. That N20 million can be multiplied in a few years or lost in a few years. It all depends on the opportunities available to you. Mcteeblack: |
You also need to add t bad habits, attitude and mentality of Nigerians to the list. all4naija: |
Hahahahahaha please tell m how does the egg one work? Haven't heard that before lol menix: |
Serious issue. i think there are already underlying disciplinary issues with the child before this incident. Whilst I do not condone beating and leaving marks and all that, there are ways kids can be disciplined and kept in check. There is a difference between punishing and disciplining a child, and beating a child out of anger and frustration like she did leaving him with a bleeding nose and black eye. i see it as a situation where she has allowed the boy too wide a boundary so when she refused to watch a movie with him he threw a tantrum and flushed owo rent down the drain. Gbese. One question i have though, why is she keeping cash at home to pay the landlord ?? Why isn't it done via direct debit from her bank to the landlords?Having said all that, if it happened to me I will put on the tv and radio loud, take the child to the bathroom and run the bath so no one can hear anything then beat nonsense out of him so as Ndukings92 said he go know d different between six and half a dozen lol Ishilove: |
He is not praying for us to surpass US, just have world class cities we as Nigerians can enjoy. Besides even when we become an industrial country in what regard are you expecting to surpass the US? GDP wise? |
You are right I should have specified that many not all. justwise: |
I am not looking down on the job tbh just making a point in response to some other post. Yes you are right there are others like the rail guys etc and I should have said many of. I believe in dignity in labour and don't care what you do as you are the one who knows what you are working towards ogaju007: |
Well depending on what they did in Nigeria before the left they may be in the better position doing early morning cleaning e.g. they earn better than most of the so called contract workers in banks in Nigeria. Also depends on why they are doing it e.g. to stabilise till they get settled etc. Another thing is many of these people do it to provide a better tomorrow for their children. Yes they may endure the odd jobs but their kids have a lot more opportunities without having to know man. Lizabeth25: |
Many of such People heading to work at that time in London are usually those doing odd menial jobs like early morning office cleaning. You also have those coming from outside London and those who work in jobs which require early status e.g shift workers such as rail and transport workers etc. I remember my student days when I worked at Gap at Oxford Street 6am-10am which means I left home about 5am and after work headed to lectures. Lizabeth25: |
How can he have signed a contract and still be favorite to succeed Rogers. If he has signed then he has succeeded Rogers hasn't he? Btw Liverpool haven't appointed him yet. They are still discussing terms especially around who controls transfers so it is wrong to say he has signed or agreed a three year deal. coded01: |
She was arrested for money laundering within UK jurisdiction and not for crimes committed in Nigeria. tobimillar: |
Yes you can but you may need to look at lower ranked universities with lower entry requirements. Another way you can improve your chances is to sit the entry exams like GRE and TOEFL and get good grades. Re scholarship, it will be hard getting a scholarship with a low grade. You can find lots more information on the link Zee gave you. |
I think they were just being difficult to extort money from her. tpiander: |

I think TrajansKong was being sarcastic. A least I hope so. naijadeyhia: |
The difference is those do not belong to the Pope but to the church while for Nigerian pastors the wealth belongs to the Pastor and is usually passed to their children. Some of the best schools in the UK are run by the Catholic Church and you know what, they are free. Weah96: |
You are right. There was a story recently on nairaland where a woman was sexually assaulted in a bus and when she raised alarm she was told to go and pray about it. See what religion has caused in Africa. DrGroove: |
Can't remember exactly how many days but it has to do with how long it takes Venus to rotate around its axis which is the day compared to how long it takes to go round the sun which is the year. mohemos: |
That is if Russian jets are really bombing ISIS and not Assad opponents. Putin always has his hidden agenda with everything he does. Zoharariel: |
He already has a job with one of the top law firms in the UK. If he focuses on corporate law which is very rewarding he can always come to Nigerian for man roles unless he wants to be a criminal lawyer which I doubt as the law firm he joined is more a corporate law firm. amaben2020: |

Canada is a country of hardship and Nigeria is a country of honey and gold right? I don't get all this first class citizen stuff we always talk about. unless you are rich in Nigeria you are not a first class citizen at all. There are people who make it Nigeria same as there are those who don't, and there are people who make it in Canada etc. same as those who don't. The environment in Nigeria is suitable for some and isn't for others, same as the environment in Canada or US etc. is suitable for some, and not others e.g. yourself. Do what works for you and let others do what works for them. pleiades45: |
I think your friend should take the job and go for Masters in a few years. Reason is having a few years of good multinational experience under his belt will make it easier for him to get a job after Masters in Canada or if he returns to Nigerian rather than competing for entry level jobs again. Also he was able to get admission to Masters now, hence with a few years of good quality experience he will definitely be able to get admission in a few years and probably in a better university. |
Irrespective of when WHO declared Nigeria polio free Nigeria owes a debt of gratitude to Bill Gates and therefore Buhari has every right to speak to him when he sees him. You do know the Bill Gates foundation also has other goals aside polio right or your opinion is once we get what we want we avoid people? They also work to eradicate HIV, Malaria etc. I just don't get the point you were trying to make that GEJ eradicated polio while Buhari is taking pictures with Bill Gates aside being petty. sdindan: |
What am I not saying. You are insulting Buhari for meeting with Bill Gates forgetting Bill Gates was the on who funded Nigerians anti polio vaccination. sdindan: |
