I agree there is more to the story as before the UKBA take your phone and go through they must have seen something to make them believe he was not coming for what he claim. With regards to explaining why he said he knew no one, unfortunately once you have been caught in a lie you lose credibility and asking for a reason to explain why he lied doesn't cut it. This is a country where politicians step down when caught in a lie. The chairman of the Conservative party was recently caught in what I would say is small lie in the grand scheme of things and the guy is under so much pressure from the press and opposition. obailala: There is certainly more to this story than the you or your friend is telling us. If what you have narrated is the complete story, then I would say the UKBA guys were wrong.
Was he given a chance to explain why he claimed he knew no one?... He had a hotel booked, he was in the country for business meeting (probably in a town out of London), he had no intentions of seeing his in-law and didn't even think it fit to inform her. He probably didnt even know if she was resident in London or in another town. If I were the man and was casually asked by the immigration guys, I would likely have just given a similar casual answer since my sister in-law's existence was inconsequential to my visit. It becomes a problem only if the immigration guys laid serious emphasis on the question but the man still insisted he knew no one.
Just like I said, there is more to this story than your friend narrated. The immigration guys wouldn't just deport people for such a flimsy reason. |

I get your bro. What school are you and how are you finding it? I'm not looking for admission or finding but it will def help those who are. slimmy05: ttmacoy, when I respond in terms of financial aid, I categorically stated my schools statistics of getting funding. You have at least a 70% chance of getting a scholarship either a tuition scholarship, GA, TA, RA or International Merit scholarship (90%). We have a lot of scholarships you can go for, so you select the one that best suit you. You can talk to your graduate coordinator here to assist you send mails to departments if they have an open GA position, you have the graduation success specialist who would go as far as making calls for you and at least assist you talk to departments and units that can offer you tuition scholarship while you work for 8 hrs weekly in return. http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/east-tennessee-state-university-3487
US Universities are expensive when you consider your spending for the two years of your stay. So one is encourage to source for funding. I bet you cannot afford the fees without seeking for funding or Job here. So you have to make it a right because without it, no masters program
The chances of getting admission here is high 86%. Its not a high ranked school, I really do not need the masters program much so the ranking doesn't matter in this respect to me (It would be handy in Nigeria, when I decide to come back ). We all have our aim of coming here and what you set out to achieve. You will find student here joke about getting scholarship for being black lol. Its just a usual joke around here cos I've not seen any Nigerian here or other friends in even in my class without some sort of funding partial or full. |

Show me the policy statement that says so. slimmy05: In my school, funding is like your right. You can even can even get funding cos you're black.

I noticed this trend as well where people seem to feel entitled to funding now. The schools will probably just be more rigid in giving out funding as they are not charities. They need to earn from tuition as well. ebdib: It's like this "no funding" thing is now a new anthem. American schools are not obliged to fund any student. Much less an international student who doesn't have stellar grades. As a matter of fact even with stellar grades, funding is not a guarantee. I've seen a couple come here talking about funding.
To clarify, Funding is usually given to a select few and most times it's attached to professors research labs, teaching assistants and they ensure that the best students get these. The only way to make things easier is to make sure you do your research before applying. Mail these professors ahead of time. Not after your applying you begin to hunt for funding that may likely never come.
Besides not all schools can fund. No matter how hard you try. Budget cuts everywhere. Once again. Research before applying! |
Travel › Re: 10 Reasons Why I'm Leaving America And Moving To Nigeria by ttmacoy: 6:48pm On Mar 21, 2015 |
Bravo, nice impartial advice there and I agree with it totally. The main positive to Nigeria i get from pool talking to me about coming back is the possibility to make more money quickly. Whilst this isn't a guarantee as you also lose money very quickly especially when it depends on knowing specific people in relevant positions, and a decision needs to be made on what is more important and also this depends on your earning capability in the US compared to Nigeria. jjman2322: Hey lady, please read this fully before you make a mistake..
Can you guys please stop advising her to move here.... She needs to visit first for a month and see if she likes it..
I have some time and I can relate so let me explain both to you..
I moved to the USA when I was young (for grade school), and lived there for 16 years before moving back recently.. I know both sides very well..Im still in my late 20's. Note that im a USA citizen so it's not like I cant move back if I want to,
Nigeria is a GREAT country if you have some money to be very comfortable... I have constant electricity (with generators), have drivers, maids, cooks, and security, but even with all these I still miss the States..
PROS OF NIGERIA:
1. Better Food 2. Good Weather 3. Corruption works in your favour (Forget ever getting speeding tickets, getting points on your license, etc, N200 and you're free) 4. Laid Back 5. More business opportunities (if you have a solid PLAN) 6. Easier life (maids, cooks, etc) 7. Minimal racism. In Nigeria you are judged by how rich you are. If you have money nobody will ever discriminate against you.
THIS IS ABOUT IT..
now for the CONS OF NIGERIA
1. Its very hot and humid, but its a little better than the cold. 2. The love for money here is strong, (Most girls I meet just want money, unlike the states where you could be poor and still easily get girls) 3. Lack of constant electricity.. 4. You need AC's all year round to be comfortable. 5. Its unsafe.. Everyday someone is getting robbed or kidnapped. 6. It's a little boring, and let me explain:
In the USA, if i got bored I could easily go skiing at a resort for a weekend, or hit up miami beach... I can also go to Vegas or head to Colorado for the nature. Of course you could also do a weekend in NYC or if you feel like being romantic you could hit up hawaii for a week.
Basically the USA has a lot more to do, due to the 50 states and the much better airline travel. In nigeria most people's idea of fun is (movie theater & clubs & malls). People smoke in clubs so I stopped going a lot. Our malls are also nothing to write home about. One of my friends was raving about the mall in Lagos so i did visit it last year. LOL.. I was like dude you need to come and see an actual mall abroad. The things they call malls here are comparable to "STRIP MALLS" in the states. Im sure you understand that.
7. The culture is conservative. If you have tattoos or wear certain stuff you will be judged by others as a "wayward" girl.
8. The poverty level here is insane, and it'll get to you eventually. There are thousands of people on the streets, blind, no legs, etc, just begging for money. It's sad.
9. The healthcare here isn't up to par. I recently had some problems and went to a big/nice hospital and they couldn't figure out what was wrong even after using their machines. I then visited a doctor in the states and in a few minutes they knew what was wrong.. You can't blame them though, how do you expect Nigeria hospitals to afford equipment that costs millions of dollars. There's a reason the rich seek treatment outside Nigeria.
Most Nigerians would not agree with me and would argue that Nigeria has some top hospitals, however ask anyone who has gotten a surgery or delivered a baby in the United States, and they would concur with me that there is no comparison.
10. No 911 to call.. Most people actually survive car accidents initially except in Nigeria there's no way for them to get to the hospital quickly. Besides hospitals here would require a payment before fully treating you and operating on you.
11. Level of dust/dirt, but this doesn't bother me too much.
This is all I can think of that really bothers me for now.. There's a lot more but those are minor issues.
So you may ask why I stay.
Well im here because I make a lot more money here than I could make in the states, plus i have help to do basic things. I can also visit the states whenever I want to. If it weren't for the money, I would not be here...
Thats why you are getting conflicting opinions. Nigeria is OK if you have a lot of money, and your money goes a longer way here. If you don't have good money then don't leave the states and come down here.. You will probably regret it.
My suggestion to you: Move to the west coast. Less racism, perfect weather, and laid back life style... Try that before moving here.. |

Wow, are people really justifying his dad slapping his mother I read some people saying stuff like well you didn't know what she did etc.... I can't even believe that anyone can say a woman should be slapped by her husband for any reason whatsoever. OP In a sane country you are old enough o be on your own and would probably be living on your own from University so my advice is if you can move out do so and focus on your future. Do not destroy anything in revenge as that can lead to other issues. Move on with dignity and maturity and he will regret his actions. One last advice whenever you get married please please please there is NO situation that warrants you beating your wife. No situation ever. Marriage should be 2 people coming together with respect, trust and love but as usual with everything Nigeria it is different. Saw a thread the other day where a woman complained her husband had his brother as next of kin and people were supporting it. In my opinion why stay married then if you cannot trust your wife? |
Career › Developing Future Business Leaders V Enterpreneurship In Nigeria by ttmacoy(op): 6:19pm On Mar 19, 2015 |
As some of you may be aware, Thidjane Tiam from Ivory Coast was recently named the CEO of Credit Suisse and I saw this write up by Strive Masiyiwa about the ne d to develop future professional business managers and leaders and not just focus on enterpreneurship which seems to be the in thing now.
I've noticed this trend on nairaland where people are always adviced to set up a business instead of e.g. Further studies or advising people to go into business rather than pursue careers.
My issue with this advice is most of this so called entrepreneurs are buyers and sellers and not exactly entrepreneurs. At the most they may make some money but they do not build lasting institutions and create wealth for others.
There is a thread where someone was asking about going to Harvard for his MBA and the general consensus was it was a waste of money and the money should be us do for business. No mention of the fact that many businesses fail within 1-3 years and it just smacks of a small minded impatient approach where we want it now now.
What are your thoughts on this?

I don't get this statement at all? Why would the children be next of kin when your wife should be your partner? The husband and wife are one and there should be transparency and trust between both hence the wife should be husband's next of kin and vice versa. in the event the husband is no more the wife is the one who will look after the kinds until they are adults. Your statement just sounds like your wife is a pest or gold digger or something... "why would a sensible man make is wife his next of kin" kendrick9: why would any sensible man make his wife next of kin,When he has sons/children? |
Family › Re: Rude Awakening: I Am Not My Husband's Next Of Kin And Beneficiary!! by ttmacoy: 1:35pm On Mar 18, 2015 |
People saying the man is right for using his brother as next of kin amaze me. What happened to trust in marriages?
The wife should be his next of kin and she should be entrusted to take care of his kids if anything happens to him not his brother or family. Once you marry you and your wife become one and not this one leg in and one leg out that seems to be practised.
If he doesn't trust his wife enough to make her next of kin and vice verse then maybe the relationship should be evaluated.
It intrigues me when you see family members fighting a woman over her husbands wealth and assets or taking the kids simply because they can bully her or they are more influential. It is wrong. |

Pretty much means they assess applications as and when received and make decisions rather than wait till a cut off date, assess all in one go and release admission results in one swoop. dicapino: hello gurus. I contacted a department an d I was told that they have started making admission decisions and said they give admission on a rolling basis.

I get you now. You are right the $10k option wouldn't work given your plan to relocate to Nigeria. trying to service debt in $$$ from Nigeria is very risky especially with the way the Naira has depreciated. I have been away from the Nigerian work scene for a few years now, but I think your experience to date should be the key to getting a job in Nigeria rather than an MBA (I may be wrong though). Whilst I have seen a Nigerian who is on the EMBA program at Chicago Booth, I don't think it's a popular route with Nigeria employers unless very good multinationals and you would probably need to et to high levels within the company. What I would suggest is try to get a job in Nigeria and if successful move and settle there. You also have the MBA route as back up should things in Nigeria not go as planned, that will ease your entry back into the US. Btw I am a Deloitte Consultant as well but in London moving to Chicago in a few months - plan is to get a part time MBA from Booth while continuing with S&O for a few more years. shoggs: @ttmacoy
Thanks for the feedback, considering I already have a master's degree I wouldn't be eligible to apply for the MBA being paid by Deloitte, the closest thing I could get is $10k every year for 3yrs max while working full time which would be applied to a part time program, then when i'm done I would have to work for 2yrs, in total that would be 5yrs from the start of the part time program, not a good Idea I think.
With the MBA I know what i'm getting here but in Nigeria i'm totally clueless and that'd be a poor business decision if I can't quantify it before going back. Another option I was considering might be delaying it and hopefully in my mid 30's go get an EMBA and just maybe then I could get an employer in Nigeria pay for that, again I don't even know if companies in Nigeria do that. Thanks for the advice though, much appreciated and any other opinion would be appreciated as well. |
Career › Re: Top 10 Business School Or Not by ttmacoy: 11:06pm On Mar 16, 2015 |
Given you are an S&O consultant, why not get Deloitte to pay for your MBA. You come back as an SC work your 2 year commitment to manager and that way you can relocate to Nigeria at a higher level and with the MBA.
If for whatever reason you will not be getting Deloitte to pay, I'm not really sure how the MBA market is in Nigeria especially regarding pay hence it may make sense to pay off the loan in the states before moving over. This of course depends on how much you are offered in Nigeria. Hopefully those with more insight into this can chip in. |

We are saying the same thing. You say Nigeria is not ready to turn things around, that's part of the IF mirage. As far back as I can remember we've been taking about this if our leaders this, if Nigerians that and it has not happened. You say Somalia is fishing war since 1990s. I say if they decide to embrace peace the war will be over and they will make progress but they choose not to. You say Zimbabwe is under sanctions, I say if the people of Zimbabwe choose democracy and rule of law there will be no sanctions and they will progress. So you see its easy to point out the IFs but hard to achieve and this applies to Nigeria as well. adconline: Stop deluding yourself! Somali has been fighting war since 1990s while Naija is not, Zimbabwe has been under sanctions from west since 2000s while Naija is not. All our problems are self-inflicted and executed. I repeat Naija is not ready to turn things around. No CT Scan or MRI machines in any govt hospital in the whole of south east. Minus Lagos, only UCH has in the southwest.. There is no IF aabout these situations, it's just that we have made conscious effort to under develop. |

That IF applies to pretty much every country. If not for war and poverty Somalia would be the greatest country on earth. If not for inflation and Mugabe Zimbabwe will be the best country on earth etc. Doesn't mean much. what matters is what is on the ground... the reality of things not IF fantasy lands. adconline: Ui Big IF.. The point is, Naija has never been a great country and may likely not be cos power is at 3000MW while about less than 50K km roads are paved while a country like Pakistan has 3x more paved roads than Naija |

Thank you, thank you, Thank you. The way we shout racism comes across as an excuse from entitled self indulgent spoilt brats. People here keep shouting Ferguson like as soon as you step into america as a black man you get shot. No you do not. Live a law abiding life, be respectable and respectful and you don't have any problems. I have said whilst there is an issue of heavy handedness sometimes by the police, most of the blacks shot were in the wrong place e.g. teenagers robbing shops around instead of being in school or working. The homeless man in NY... why the hell would you be reaching for a police an's gun  ?? are you telling me you get into a struggle with a Nigerian police office to the extent you reach for his gun and he would smile at you  Common sense tells you to always be respectful when dealing with the police and theta respect will most likely be reciprocated. If you react arrogantly or aggressively to them the react same back. We keep talking about all the opportunities in Nigeria but it all boils down to the opportunity to make huge amount of money quickly (quick material mentality) but mostly at the expense of others and knowing the right people. The problem is this is not guaranteed and you are also as likely NOT to make it and like a life of frustration. See how people are scrambling for FAAN jobs and you will see the level of desperation in Nigeria. I know people who went for the interviews and the demands made are so ridiculous you winder what the hell people think in that country. Go out of their way to make things difficult for ourselves. Anyway goodluck to the poster. If he/She is not just creating a post as a prank to see reactions then he/she is just a spoilt entitled brat who doesn't appreciate the life and opportunities available and comes up with silly reasons such as food (black people will be extinct in 100 years), the weather etc. If you really want to be in touch with your roots in Africa, why not take your ass down to sierra leone or Liberia and when Ebola get your ass lets see if you will stay behind to use the local traditional medical care to be in touch with your roots and culture or if run quickly back to America for proper healthcare. Goodluck. Bollinger: Lol. I dare you to do it. It seems to me that all your points are choices you have made for yourself. I will attempt to explain;
1. No one is forcing you to eat burger. There is an over abundance of African stores. I have not been to Nigerian in ages and i eat African food everyday. In fact, i just finished a bowl of eba with stew and okro soup, garnished with goat meat, shaki, and ponmo. 2. No one if forcing you to live in cold cities. Ever heard of Atlanta, Texas, Cali? 3. No one if forcing you to drink from the Taps. Ever heard of bottled water? cheaper than dirt over here. 4. If language is priority then get Rosseta stones cd's. I am leaning spanish right now and it's great. I know for sure they have Nigerian languages. 5. My kids speak perfect yoruba and ishan. And they know a lot about their heritage. Ever heard of ebooks. 6. No one is forcing you to use Technology. In fact please move back to Nigeria and see if you won't miss clear cell signals, constant power supply, high speed internet, calling the police and they'll be at your door in ten minutes etc. 7. Roots. My dear, from what i am detecting you are an akata, (a term we use for black american). Just like a typical black american you are spoilt and have no clue what you are talking about. I say again move back and lets see how long you'll last. 8. I have nothing to say about that. Religion is your choice. 9. Racism. Only black americans scream racism, where in fact they are lazy and self entitled. Sitting at home expecting welfare, having children as young 12 years old so they can collect benefits, wearing pants low to the ankle, acting like gangstas, committing crimes and expecting not to be arrested. I came to the states with nothing, but made a very successful life for myself. All the african immigrants i know have done the same. Only the akata's complain of racism because they are lazy.

Why Morocco doesn't matter. Nigeria needs to start pulling her weight on the international scene and stop all this embarrassing begging around that we are currently doing. We current have no sway internationally. International leaders avoid Jonathan and that's not good. Why the hell would the Ministry of foreign affairs lie like that? Especially with social media and we know the news will fly all over the age quicker than you can say jack. We need to get our priorities right quickly and work hard to redress and fix our economy and provide a good life for our citizens. By this I mean basic infrastructure that a government should provide. It's so easy to rule Nigeria because Nigerians are good at putting blame on people to avoid facing up to issues so all Jonathan has to do is give ideas for someone else to blame now Morroco. No on is talking about the silly lie by a while giant of Africa and all focused on even Morroco, wetin dey get etc thereby excusing your failure of a government again. I agree with you and that's why it grills me when I see people quick to insult other countries and make it like they are the reason for our situation. We Nigerian need to recognise the issues, take blame and roll up our sleeves to do the hard work required to fix it. That starts from the leaders but also includes everything single Nigeria. The me taking of blame must change to one of change starts with me. Nigerians talk about change but yet are not ready to stop the day to day things they do that are wrong e.g. simple things such as disobeying traffic rules leading to chaos on the streets. internetpo: You have a point there.
