At least we can agree that the problems are due to Nigeria not investing widely in other sectors like agriculture and not because other countries want to break up Nigeria. Regarding bad leaders, the leaders of a country are a reflection of the people so I stand by my point that Nigeria messed up real bad. The corruption does not start and end with the leaders, the whole country is corrupt. The mentality of the average Nigerian needs to change for Nigeria to make good progress. GodMode: Nigeria has "corrupt leaders" which affects the citizens... Nigeria didn't mess up.
The citizens don't have favourable business environments..
Citizens that want to invest in agriculture have to do so without govt funding.
If the businesses are eventually created govt(corrupt leaders) go into "exploitation mode"... |

Wow the level of conspiracies that fly around Nigeria is amazing. If the same level of imagination was applied to positive things Nigeria would be great. Oil started to fall before the sanctions on Russia. It started due to slowing demand from China who has been the biggest importer of oil past few years and a combination of America starting to export o due to shake gas boom. This shale gas boom has been in the making over 10 years and did not start over night because of Russia or to break up Nigeria. The oil price was also pushed by increasing production from Libya and Iraq. When there is too much supply price and demand falls. Simple economics. Nigeria should take responsibility for failing to utilise the oil funds wisely and stop blaming any other country. Learn to take responsibility and admit Nigeria messes up real bad and not for the first time all for greed and individual selfish materialistic ambitions. GodMode: Oil price started falling when their problems with Russia started...
If Nigeria had invested in agriculture... U'll probably hear that one disease is killing crops and burning of farms would follow due to the corrupt leaders... |

Did you study economics in school at all? Oil price fell due to over supply and falling demand simple. There was no way oil price will continue to rise forever. Anyone who expected that must be delusional. Dubai knew oil windfall is not forever and invested the oil money wisely. Nigeria squandered the money and you come here and say oil price fell because they want to break up Nigeria. GodMode: Fall in oil price is to weaken the financial strength of countries that rely on oil..
Unfortunately Nigeria falls in this category... Their plans to break-up Nigeria is gradually been achieved...
Unfortunately most Nigerians are too gullible to read between the lines..
Unfortunately nigerian leaders are corrupt... |

No the deal was completed 2013. The deal price was never disclosed so the papers have used $1bn based on the price Google paid for a similar Israeli company. Besides even if it was sold for $1bn he would not own 100% as over time he would have sold shares to venture capitalists and early investors to grow the company into the stage where apple was interested. blink182: This deal has just been concluded after the recent list was created. |

The company was sold for $1bn, but that doesn't mean he owns it 100%. The $1bn figure was never confirmed btw, that's come based on the price paid by Google for a similar company able the same tjme. As part of the fund raising to grow the company to where it was today to be acquired, he would have had to give up shares in the company to early stage investors. Thank you. You go where you have the best opportunities for you and your family. If Nigeria works for you fine. There's no issue there. Same for those who prefer to be abroad. solomonwis: I really find it difficult to understand so many people who are "abroad" and will castigate all manner of people including the magnanimity of the host country for allowing you in and claiming citizenship.
If you are not at peace where you are, please go back to Nigeria. Nigeria is your own country not anywhere else! You can't complain wherever you are and still remain there, it doesn't speak well of a sane mind.
Truth is, it is not everybody that has had it smooth abroad neither can we safely conclude everybody "abroad" has had it rough. Even in Ghana, a former colleague who was transferred there complained of the treatment meted out to him by immigration officials who asked him for his work permit in the most ruthless manner. They didn't even allow him say nothing before he was bundled into their truck! In the end, he parted with a $200 bribe/fine. Hey, that's a black man to his fellow black man!
Historically, human beings emigrate and will continue to do so in search of peace (or if you will, greener pasture). Some will find comfort in the course of the sojourn, others won't! Painting an all pathetic story of "abroad" has not and will not stop this. In fact, some people (especially the adventurous ones ) are more receptive to these stories and will like to experience such.
The bottom line is, we all can't live in our own island pretending that other islands don't exist! Slavery or not, we all need one another. |

While I understand the attraction of newfoundland from a cost perspective, you also have to consider the post mba job opportunities. Typically cheaper schools with lower entry standards have less career opportunities than their better ranked counterparts who are more expensive and have higher entry standards. An easy test is to search for graduates of the program on LinkedIn to see where they end up, and also see if the school has a career report to see what companies come to campus to recruit. Cost should not be the only factor for an MBA. I see this a lot in the UK people to for an MBA because it's cheap and at the end cannot get a job because they just cannot compete with the better ranked programs which have better reputation and more industry links. As they say soup we sweet, nah money spoil am. You can hedge your bet by applying to newfoundland as back up, but also to some other higher ranked programs, try to ace the GMAT and you may get scholarships. Things to consider. irridemi: thank u so much. I have checked the schools but I still prefer the Memorial Uni cos of d fees, I want a low tution fee school, so that we'll have more money to live on b4 we settle in. If Nigeria works for you fine, I believe in a global world and people always migrate around. Besides saying g police shooting black in America is rubbish because those blacks are gangsters and good for nothing in the wrong place at the wrong time. Tell me how many well to do blacks who are law abiding that have been killed by police in America? How many accidental discharges take place in Nigeria? How many non juridical killings by the police and military in Nigeria? Hugo to north Nigerian and see how many Nigerians have been killed or maimed in the name of boko haram. sukkot: this is greater than money. there is no peace of mind for a black man in the west. unless you are just a subservient slave minded negro. all over america the police is gunning down young black men. same all over the world. black man was prevented from entering a train by racist white people etc etc etc. there is no peace of mind for a black man in a white mans world PERIOD. i was in total oblivion but now i can see clearly. we are born enemies. esau vs jacob. it is biblical |

My point exactly. The only advantage I hear about Nigeria is money and money isn't everything. Peace of mind in a safe same environment means more to some people. ccaramel: Sukkot it's not that at all. Actually I earn more money from my businesses in Nigeria than my job in Canada, I have a bigger house, car in Nigeria and my family is ok. Mind you I was an international student for my undergrad and masters in Canada. Not cheap. It's not about money to me. But its about a sane and safe environment where the mind can develop. I just returned from a 4 month trip to nigeria and I couldn't wait to get back even with the sub zero temperature. The traffic, NEPA, gridlock, horrible drivers in Lagos is just not for me. Sure there's money but that's not me. Why do the majority of the kids of the rich stay and school abroad? Plain and simple. It's a saner environment. Things work better, govt is doing their job, police are doing their job, hardly traffic, safer environment generally. If you are ok with Nigeria if you have the opportunity to be in a developed country like Canada. It's ok. We all have different personalities and way of life. Nigeria will always be home. But I love Canada. If NIgeria can become a better country and govt decides to start working. I will be the first one to pack my bags and return home. For now. I am home. Home is where the heart is. I am happy here. Money is nothing. |
Travel › Re: I Am In Dilemma, Do We Relocate To Canada Or Stay Back by ttmacoy: 8:31pm On Feb 28, 2015 |
Well I guess your definition of peace of mind relates to money.... to me it doesn't necessarily. I see people are always talking about bills in the western world like everything is free in Nigeria. Nigeria is expensive and very hard to budget because of so many unexpected expenses that come up daily so I don't really get this bills complaint. I notice people tend to make this comparisons from e.g. a banker in Nigeria to maybe someone doing odd jobs abroad, but for a working professional perspective you can live a very good life. if you compare bankers with same number of working experience in the UK or US to Nigeria are you telling me the nigerian lives a better life or earns more? Compare doctors to doctors or engineer to engineers? What i like about the UK or US is I can budget properly and live within my budget. You say mortgages like it a bad thing. A mortgage is what will allow a 22-25 year old buy a place here and his monthly mortgage payments will be less than the equivalent rent if he was renting same place. This means over the life of the mortgage not only is he paying less than the rent he would have paid if he was waiting to buy the house outright, but he also benefits from price increase from the start. This mortgage is what will allow same type of person buy houses to rent out without putting down the whole amount of the house which means he earns the difference between the rent charged and the mortgage payment and benefits from price increase. I have friends who work on the island and live in Ajah, earn good money and send hours in traffic everyday. Get home have to put on generator etc, that is a stressful life and yet no vacation to enjoy and destress. And no travelling to London to stay with uncle or aunty and shop all around peckham and brixton is not vacation. This tax you complain about is what pays for free medical, free education etc . sukkot: if you are looking for peace of mind, the western world is not the place to get peace of mind. trust me. unless of course you are jonathan goodluck and you have a house in golders green or hampstead all paid for, no mortgage and the council tax paid for one year in advance |

Whilst I am not exactly familiar in with the Canadian system, I am well versed with the UK and US system and an MBA from a good school is a very good entry point into those countries. You have an auditor background and you can leverage this with an MBA to get a good job through on campus recruitment. As I said this depends on the school you are aiming for. Diff with an MBA and maybe other masters is with an MBA (school dependent) there's a healthy on campus recruiting process which is structured and also internships will give you a leg up. Meanwhile for masters programs you tend to apply for specific roles which is harder and also they tend to be one year with no internship option etc. All in all it depends on what your career goals are. I work with one of the big 4 within their consulting arm and relate with lots of MBAs. 7 years experience with an accounting firm and a bank is a good shot for post MBA recruiting. Just another angle to look at it from. The downside though is such schools with strong recruiting pipeline have high entry requirements and are usually expensive. In the UK and US good GMAT scores can get you scholarships but I'm not familiar with the Canadian system to know if you get scholarships as well. http://www.businessbecause.com/news/mba-north-america/2488/hot-mba-jobs-surge-for-mba-in-canadahttp://business.financialpost.com/2013/10/28/international-students-are-using-the-canadian-mba-as-a-portal-to-international-business/#__federated=1irridemi: wow thanks. That's in the assumption that every Nigerian in Canada is only interested in money / material things. Some people just want peace of mind and a stable good life in an environment that works. I don't live in Canada but I know many Nigerians with very good jobs in the UK and US, and giving them a house in Nigeria will not really move them. Having a house for rent in Nigeria doesn't still mean stability as we know a the wahala with managing tenants in Nigeria and the hypertension that comes with it. I agree with your point about the vibe, if you don't feel the place the it makes sense not to stay, but I disagree that you have to return to Nigeria to make it. You can make it anywhere in the world, and I will also say In Places like the US, Canada etc there is a lot more opportunity to make it as a professional based on what you bring to the table and not who you know. I know people in jobs in Nigeria e.g. at glo or banks who hate the job but cannot leave because they got the job through one uncle and have no connection to move to another company. I always get people telling me about coming back to Nigeria and while it is something I consider for the future, I also notice the only advantage they can tell me is you can make money easily. That's it, just money, but they don't mention there is also a huge chance of not making hour so called money. And besides this money making is so volatile in Nigeria. Because you hit it by knowing one politician this year doesn't mean next year you will still make it. Some people are more concerned with being context, fulfilled, happy and healthy rather than chance to hit money but so much stress. sukkot: brother, you and i know that if you poll 10,000 nigerians in canada and give them this option. you can either remain in canada or you can pack your bags tomorrow and return to nigeria and when you get to nigeria we will have 2 houses signed over to you as your property. the 2 houses are a gift to you for returning home. one of the houses you live in with your family and the other you use for rent to feed yourself. you and i know all 10,000 nigerians in canada will be on the next flight smoking out of canada back to nigeria. you and i know this if we are going to be truthful with ourselves. now this woman and her husband have properties and they are trying to sell it to go to canada . does that make sense to you ? lmao. really ? |

Very true. I went into a barclays bank recently and they have replaced tellers with machines now. The machines can be used to pay in cash/cheque, administer your accounts etc and only for certain things do you approach the customer service desk for help. Whilst it's good from a technological advancement perspective, that's some jobs gone just like that. KoloOyinbo: Before you do anything investigate the employment opportunities and level of unemployment. Sadly I can advise about Canada but know that my Naija friend who was Bank Manager in Lagos can to Ireland and cannot even get a job as a cashier as ALL the banks here are laying off staff and closing branches as folks move to internet banking etc.
So look closely at the level of unemployment especially as it relates to you own industry sector. |
