Hi Zesweedie, Apologies my post may have been confusing as I reread it and realised I didn't finish and left it open ended as suggesting you lie. What I was trying to say was one option was to avoid mentioning you are married or your husband has a green card but that has repercussions as others have also said so best to be upfront and hopefully it is overlooked. Re the time it will take for the I-130, the current date is Feb 2013 which is about 2 years so hopefully max 3 years you should be able to apply for Adjustment of Status. Goodluck with the application and try to focus on your credibility as a student. To biikeys, Classicalmusic, justwise, sirRiddy, thanks for pulling me up on this and maintaining the spirit of honesty on this thread. zesweedie: |
Hi, This is a very tricky situation because if the embassy know your husband is a resident, your visa will most likely be rejected as they will see you as a potential immigrant. One option is to exclude the fact your husband is a resident and maybe say you are single to get your student visa. Risk is will it impact your application for residency later on? I am leaning towards the fact that it should not have an impact especially if you are yet to do the church wedding etc, but those who think/know otherwise are free to chip in. If you are successful with the student visa then he can submit form I1-30 for you in the states for your green card which may take up to 3 years. zesweedie: |
I think you are mixing up getting a job via networking to what we practice in Nigeria. Your director asked you for someone with specific skills and you suggested 3 friends who you knew had the skills and they went through the normal process of interviews before one of them got the job. That's very different from Nigeria where someone who is clearly not qualified is given the job no interview or nothing simply because he knows someone or worse where they pay for the job. Companies like mckinsey recruit a lot via recommendation from their staff because you as their staff are effectively vouching for the person, but that does not guarantee they get the job. It just means they at least wil be looked at. Please don't compare professional networking in maybe the US or UK to what we practice in Nigeria. In my firm, they had a recent recruitment drive where they were offering staff money if people you recommend get a job. This is because they know we have networks from schools and other companies we have worked at, and it is cheaper that using headhunter, but as I said if the person isn't qualified they do NOT get the job. I am not saying there is no one getting jobs simply because they know people, but very limited and nothing like the scale of Nigeria. ritux: |
Wow I know things happen in naija, but this just got me so stunned, and this guy is a patently very well paid. Na wah Bridgetown: |
Someone recently told me they were trying to get a loan from one of the top banks in Nigeria (think new generation) for a large sum, and the bank official they were dealing with who is quite senior asked for 5% of the loan amount for it to be approved. Does this really happen? 5% of the loan amount which was nearly N100m for a project on top of the high interest rates. I find it so hard to believe and want to know if anyone has experienced this before. |

You ever wonder why a country like Nigeria blessed with natural resources and people still has to be begging for used warships? If not begging for warships, you are begging for zmapp or aid, but never invest in your future and chop all the money. Ilekeh: |
Do you know what the impact of the CBN printing money is? The Nigerian economy is not resilient enough to withstand the impact of that especially on light of falling government revenue from oil prices. Nigeria is already suffering from devalued currency and high inflation and interest rates. Printing money will have more adverse effects. http://www.economicshelp.org/blog/634/economics/the-problem-with-printing-money/ koredeolanrewaju: |
Grinn see what you have caused hahaha Been trying to get my baby to sleep for past hour, and as I read this I just burst out in laughter and woke her up again lol ggrin: |

That's the whole point. They view Nigerians as very corrupt with the few who have access to funds spending lavishly with misplaced prioritises like $2 million weddings whilst coming and begging America for help. Let's face it, we all know we have misplaced priorities in Nigeria. Highest paid legislators in the world doing what? Where government stealing is not corruption. I can just imagine when a request from Nigeria reaches the white house, they look and say well $20bn went missing and they didn't bat a eyelid, look how much the president budgets for food annually. Nah they are fine we have better use of our money and help. Besides it will only end up in the hands of Good lucks cronies. Here in the UK, there is increasing anger against aid to most African countries because people see it as wasted to fund corruption especially when they read stories like these. CzarRex: |
I can just imagine if some of the people posting all this nonsense here are invited to an interview with a company like mckinsey and they ask why do you think US oil imports has fallen recently, and they answer it's because US are punishing Nigeria for the gay laws. You will get the job on the spot. Lol |
Vodkat, don't waste your time trying to explain to them. They are convinced that America is the reason why Nigeria is not the best richest country on earth. They have perfected the art of blaming others for their failures. If not the witch in village, it's jealous neighbour, or the devil or south Africa or America. Never the fault of the corrupt get rich quick attitude of Nigerians and their selfish leaders. vodkat: |
And you wonder why we have such I'll equipped leaders who come on TV and say stealing is not corruption. The leaders are a representation of the people. MissMeiya: |
God bless. I have always said Nigerians seem to have a bigger image of themselves on the international scene than is reality and are ready to believe every silly conspiracy theories rather than logical common sense. You spend more on churches and pastors than science and education and you wonder why you are still so backward depending on others for everything. MissMeiya: |
It seems Nigerian's love to blame blame blame without any justification. Everyone who knows what is happening and is unbiased knows the US have been working towards increasing oil production to reduce reliance on importation for years, and the recent shale boom actually boosted USA to the top oil producer this year. This is inpart the reason for the recent fall in oil prices, coupled with slowing Chinese economy among other factors, so to say US stopped buying Nigeria oil is punishment for gay law is foolishness. Stop blaming the US and focus on building your refineries so you are not importing oil, and and diversify your economy. If you want a sensible logical reason as to why US stopped importing Nigeria oil, read the following link, if not continue to wallow in ignorance and believe its gay law. http://time.com/67163/why-are-u-s-oil-imports-falling/ Besides, Nigeria was never a major supplier of oil to the states. See below the top 5 oil suppliers to the states; Top five countries2 Canada 3.142 (32%) Saudi Arabia 1.329 (13%) Mexico 0.919 (9%) Venezuela 0.806 (8%) Russia 0.460 (5%) 0 please the world is a small village now due to the internet and information is free and available so educate yourselves and stop typing ignorant rubbish |
Hey I must say I am impressed by the big dream. Welcome change from the norm on Nairaland where everyone is always looking for schools that are easy to get into. One avenue to follow is LinkedIn. You can try to find Nigerians studying or who have studied at MIT via LinkedIn, add them and ask to either speak to them or maybe exchange emails to help you learn more about the school. For example a quick search came up with this guy who did his masters and is currently doing his PhD at MIT. https://www.linkedin.com/pub/babatunde-alawode/31/b05/1a0 |
Brimmie:Haha didn't realise it changed it. I use www.katproxy.com. |

SuperMartins:The Interview. Should have been turned the insult lol |
The film is hilarious, but haba the insult was over the top especially when the guy stay started singing Katy Perry. North Korea making a fuss will actually make everyone want to see the film. At least now we know Kim Jong Un poops and pees lol What do you all think of the movie? |
Getting a Nigeria visa is stressful. The Nigerian embassy in London is one of the most frustrating places ever and whilst you will get the visa i.e. less chance of being refused, you will be so frustrated by the end of the day due to the ineptitude and don't cars attitude and the extra charges. Also expecting people to be denied Nigerian visa like say US visa is unrealistic because of demand. I've never seen a queue of people outside Nigerian embassy, aside maybe Nigerians trying to renew their passport. Also how many westerners are really planning to overstay their visa in Nigeria and become illegal? You also have to consider most visas for foreigners will be business related not holiday or student as we have with Nigerians applying for US or UK visas. Most of the visit visas applied for at Nigerian embassies are actually Nigerians with foreign passports and not foreigners coming to Nigerian for holidays. |
Not to derail this thread, but why is it in Nigeria / Africa we hear all this marine spirit, ogbanje etc. I've never heard in a country like UK or US that they found someone with marine spirit who needs to be delivered etc. Is it peculiar to Africa? |
It was the bill Gates foundation who sponsored the eradication of polio in Nigeria, Afghanistan and Pakistan the three countries still having polio epidemics. Has nothing to with Good luck. In fact the fact it is a foreign charity who is eradicating polio in the giant of Africa should be a shame for Nigerian government with all the money and resources at their disposal. They would rather spend the money on campaign. blemon44: |
Nice thread guys. BSc Biochemistry MSc Applied Molecular Technology PhD Biology (admitted to start next year) |
Whilst I commend your stand, do you know (God forbjd) that you refuse to bail him out the police can kill him there and that's it? The Nigeria police are very good at covering up and given there is no stricture in place to hold them accountable, unless you are a big man who knows people and has money, that's it. In a country like the UK, if anyone dies under police guard, an independent investigative body steps in so there are checks and balances. In Nigeria the dpo will write cover up report for deputy dpo and his boys and sweep it under the carpet. No accountability at all. In America as a police officer, If you hear internal affairs are looking into your case you will shiver because they are independent and thorough. Not out anything goes land Nigeria. I'm not saying these societies are perfect, but I admire the fact that continually strive to be better and value life rich or poor more than Nigeria, and the law applied to all. musicwriter: |
In developed countries the rule of law applies to all and the systems strives for fairness. In Nigeria unless you are a big man or know people we all know your chance of successfully sueing the police or getting justice is slim to naught cus Nigeria is set up to benefit the elite over the common man who has been and will continue to be victimised. Have you ever been to Nigerian courts? Do you know the level of corruption there and how they will frustrate you and your case for the next 100 years? In developed countries if you cannot afford a lawyer, you get free public representations and there are also many organisations that will help you pro bono. If you can't afford it in Nigeria, who will support you? We have suffered so much it's now part of our dna and daily expectations. donnypool: |
God is waiting for the price of fuel in Nigeria to come down so he can put fuel in his private jet and come down to help Nigeria. intergral: |
Do you have the requisite experience? I know we love professional exams in naija. But professional exams without experience in my opinion doesn't add much value. segsxpendable: |
You can find jobs on LinkedIn. Headhunters use LinkedIn a lot to find people with skills they need and also you can apply for jobs in LinkedIn now. Very straight forward as it uses your LinkedIn profile detail to apply for the job. katibu: |
whilst LinkedIn is a very powerful tool for professional networking and job hunting, note that it is geared towards professionals and not entry level hence you will not really expect to be headhunted via LinkedIn as a graduate. Headhunting via LinkedIn is focused on people who have specific skills/experience. tebirim: |
