ok4: Good evening guys,
Please I need direction on how to go about the Australian Permanent Resident Visa, the ACS payment and which one should I take first, IELTS is still pending... I wanted to start that of Canada when a friend advised me to try Australia as he did not want me to be stranded along the way due to the calculated points (age 36 plus, no Masters). I read Chemical Engineering - first degree Started work around 2010 a Customer Service Representative-9 months IT Support- 11 months Project Management- 1 year 4 months IT Support- 7yrs plus (till date) I am an ITIL, OCA and CCNA certified.... Preparing for my IELTS I know from my work experience I should be eligible for (263212 ICT Support Engineer)-Skilled Nominated (subclass 190). Planning to go with my family- (Wife has a diploma with close age)
Thanking you in anticipation,
OK4. Your best bet is to go with ACS even though you are going to lose most of the years of experience due to non relevant degree. You can't assess as ICT Customer support officer with TRA because you don't have an IT degree which is a prerequisite....it's just gonna be a waste of A$1,000. |

Dude04: Hi Gurus in the house,
I need advice. I have a B.Sc in Geophysics from Nigeria and soon to complete my M.Sc in Geoengineering from Finland. I have 0 work experience in this field and would like to know if it is possible to get a skilled work permit. Thanks in anticipation. Geophysicist is assessed by Vetassess and this body requires at least 1 year verifiable experience before you can assess with them. |

NB1912: First you mentioned Civil Engineering Draftsperson as being less competitive. Yes it used to be less competitive, but not anymore. As PR got tougher, people started assessing for both Civil Engineering and Civil Engineering Draftsperson to boost their chances, hence it made it difficult for both occupation.
Yea VIC still sponsor offshore applicant for 190 but with a Civil Engineering occupation where there are so many applicants currently working in VIC and still waiting for sponsorship, hence his chances are very slim. VIC is notorious when it comes to rejection. Most sponsorships given to offshore applicants are mainly in health occupation or uncommon fields like Biotechnology etc. For occupations like Engineering and I.T, even if you receive a pre-invite from VIC, without a job offer, the chances of rejection is very high.
Yes I know NSW has two streams that's why I recommended NSW 491 as his best option if he is able to get maximum points in English. He is also able to go for 190 as a draftsperson but will require a very high point like 85 or 90 (based on recent trends).
You mentioned other states like TAS, ACT and NT.
TAS: He needs a job offer for both 190 and 491.
ACT: Have you ever had a look at the ACT Metrix to see how many points are awarded to those living or working in the state? Why do you think people are moving to ACT from other states? Invites are awarded purely based on highest points in ACT matrix and if you are offshore your chances are very slim.
NT: This is one of the hardest state to secure sponsorship if you are not currently living or working in the state. They only sponsor offshore applicants for 491. He will need to provide good employability statement with advert of his job and evidence of responses from recruiters regarding his employability prospect in the state. Have you searched on job adds like SEEK for civil engineering jobs in NT? You might get like 3 to 4 job adds in a month, so how will he prove his employability prospect in the state?
My analysis are based on reality and what's happening in recent times. It's best to conduct a proper research before proceeding with anything. Cheers! I understand your analysis and not disputing it, however it's still worth trying as people are still getting invites even in these states you mentioned from Nigeria. For example, I know someone who just got ACT invite as a Production Engineer this morning with 65 points on the matrix even without visiting ACT (he only had to wait for few months to get it). I never said CED is not competitive rather, it's less competitive than CE at the moment cos not every CE is obviously aware of the CED assessment. TAS does not give 190 to offshore but CE is still available on TSOL 3A list with 5 years exp requirement and eligibility from EA which TAS had given clarification last year. NT may be the hardest but interestingly, they are still nominating applicants offshore. My advice was for him to attempt the skilled migration and keep his options open. |

MissyGSam: Hi Guys,
Is it compulsory that the spouse (not the primary applicant) writes the English Test, even when there is no intention to claim points? Not compulsory but the secondary applicant must provide proof of functional English for the visa application using any of the following 1. A letter from your university stating that your course was done in English 2. IELTS - minimum of 4.5 in each of the band or PTE - minimum of 30 in each band |

NB1912: Mate, 190 has become as difficult as 189 in recent times especially for those applying from overseas. Most states now require applicants to either be working and residing in the state or have a job offer before you can get sponsored. The government is trying to force new migrants to regional area (491). Looking at his occupatuon civil engineering (Anzco 233211), he is only eligible for VIC for 190 and VIC hardly sponsor applicants without a job offer. So in a nutshell, you need to be living and working in Australia to have a chance.
As for 491 he might be eligible. As of now, the only states he can apply to are NSW, NT and ACT as other states require a job offer. Note that sponsorship for NSW is competitive as priority will be given to applicants already working in the state. NT hardly sponsor those living overseas unless you can show exceptional reasons how you would contribute to their economy. I my opinion, NSW will be his best bet, but as there are lots of civil engineers already working in the state and unable to secure 190 invite, they will all rush to 491 which makes it even more competitive. To stand a chance, he needs a very high point and getting 8 each in all bands in either IELTS or PTE will be the deciding factor. Valid points you have raised. At least, his occupations still have about 4-5 likelihood of nomination which most occupations don't even have at the moment. VIC still sponsors 190 offshore, only its 491 that requires job offer. NSW has two streams for 491 nomination (onshore and offshore) and the requirements are clearly spelt out. If he has a superior English score, then he should have an edge and be able to apply to NSW, TAS, ACT and NT. He can also go for Civil Engineering Draftsperson (CED) ---that occupation is less competitive than CE. |

Insanity: Hello house,
I am new in this Aussie forum and I wish to get some information before I start. I am a Civil Engineer graduate with 6 years experience, I want to apply for Masters in any of the AL1 schools, i have checked the PR route but my points is 60, I didn't make the cutoff for 189. I graduated with 2.1 for my undergrad. and I will be writing my Pearson in a few weeks time because I have only IELTS general test at the moment which I think won't be accepted.
My questions are; 1. How much do I need in my account for the visa application? 2. Do I need Statement of account to apply to AL1 schools? 3. Can I use UKEAS for my application, as they are free? How good are they in the admission application? Any personal review from anyone that has used them before? 4. I have 14million in my account and I will be sponsoring myself, is this amount enough for the admission and visa application checks? 5. Any engineering masters program in the AL1 schools for November 2020 entry? I think I'm late for July admissions.
Please, help me out with any other information I don't have.
Thanks a lot for your assistance With 6 years experience, you are better off applying for 190 or 491 than student visa. Also note that 189 is not the only skilled visa #myopinion |

lasun01: Hi expert in the house, i would like you hear your thought on the interpretation of this English as per Vetassess and the emphasis is on the word preceding- "The qualifications listed below are accepted on a case-by-case basis if preceding at least one year of highly relevant consulting work in that specific field of study".
My qualification happens to be within those qualification that would be accepted on a case by case basis. My query is that does the preceding means one year experience in related field prior to graduation because all Industrial Training that we have in universities within Nigeria is either 6 months or three months.
Thanks Industrial training is never regarded as experience. What's your qualification, university and occupation you want to nominate ? |

mamatwiny: tunlex01, In a situation where a couple gets grant for 491 and the wife is primary applicant, Can the family land Aussie, stay 1 week and the wife ( primary applicant) come back to Nigeria with the kid while the hubby remains? If yes, what is the maximum time the primary applicant can stay in Nigeria b4 returning?
I ask cos if we get the visa, I will want to come back in Nigeria to work while hubby stay back in Aussie and takes short courses for easy penetration to the job market. I also heard accommodation is expensive so I will need to save up Yes, the family can stay over and PA comes back. I don't know the maximum time you can stay in Nigeria but you may not be able to apply for 191 PR at exactly 3 years cos the family members in the application has to show proof of working and living in regional Australia for 3 years. Accommodation being expensive is relative. There are cheap accommodation in each state/city. The farther you move from the City/CBD, the cheaper. When you also get grant, you are given 1 year to land. So you can take your time, gather the money and move once. |

shawnmich: Please house I want to confirm, is it mandatory to have 7.0 in my IELTS before I could be eligible because I only score 5.5 in my Listening, 5.0 in my reading, 5.5 in writing and 6.0 in speaking, Over all total 5.5 is it possible for me to be eligible for the Australia residence permit application, though I want to apply for Human resources manager and it falls in Visa subclass 190 and 491. The assessing board which is AIM did not request any English proficiency. Please can I proceed with the application with my IELTS result or I will need to write another one? One more thing, how can I get nominated by the state? Kindly please assist me...May God bless you. Not mandatory, however any band less than 7 in IELTS is zero point for English which will reduce your total points drastically. AIM does not require English test for assessment however you will need the English result to be able to apply for state nomination. NT and VIC are open to minimum of IELTS 6, however these and other states also have other requirements like having 85 points in total. The possibility of having up to 75 points with zero points in English is low. Most states won't consider an HRM with a 5.5 in IELTS when Trade occupation applicants are currently going beyond Competent English to get ITA. IF you report directly to the MD of your organisation, please proceed with your AIM assessment while you prepare for another IELTS or switch to PTE. Good luck. |

@sumji, as Bligs mentioned, 491 is the new gold, although it has it benefits which includes Medicare, it's still not PR but pathway to PR. This means you'll do Masters 2 years PGWV 2 years 491 visa 3 years before you can apply for PR PR - indefinite.
You may be lucky to get 491 even before your 2 years PGW visa expires.
Also note that only 2 years degree and above will qualify you for PGW. Anything less than that, no PGW visa
If your course/occupation is not a competitive one, I'd advise you go opt for the student route. |
