oga hold it oh, if i were not busy at the moment, i would have open a thread for all the people you've insulted and believe me they will give you a thorough mouth washing. Better reconsider how you address people. Follow peace with all men.

Enigma: Meanwhile, even at the risk of digression, the above is a falsehood!
Here is Athanasius' list.
ok! I made a mistake, the only books missing are d deuterocanonical ones.
Sorry, and thanks for the correction.
Christianity Etc › Re: My Problem With Catholism-An Introspection by Ubenedictus(m): 7:30pm On Apr 13, 2013
Hehehehe, ok i get the picture.
Enigma: This is the only part of your post that is really on point; and what it shoes is that you do not even understand the question or the task.
I am not asking you for a canon that Jerome made.
I am not asking you for a canon that Athanasius made.
I am asking you for a canon that both Athanasius and Jerome said was already existing.
Athanasius said:
Maybe you want to say that something he said was handed down and divine was not "authoritative"
Look when you find ""the canon" that Jerome and Athanasius recognised, let's talk. smiley
you certainly wish to drag me into discussing the development of scripture. I see you quoted athanasius' use the word "handed down", which ofcourse means the "canon" he is teaching was given to him. Again it is also interesting to note that that phase doesn't answer the question kay asked. A canon as handed to athanasuis in d 4th century, that doesn't in any way answer the question d list of sacred text before d 4th century.
Christianity Etc › Re: My Problem With Catholism-An Introspection by Ubenedictus(m): 6:48pm On Apr 13, 2013
Enigma: ^^ And what did you do about this false accusation? wink

smiley
we spent two pages getting distrated by name calling and cheap insult and questions on Jerome when asked "for a canonical list of sacred text before d 4th century excluding those of individual christians", now that is an interesting point of concern, mayb i do not know your state of mind enough to use word "afriad", but d insults were there and so was d delay.
Christianity Etc › Re: My Problem With Catholism-An Introspection by Ubenedictus(m): 6:41pm On Apr 13, 2013
Hehehehe,
Enigma: I don't care; please don't preach to me; you have totally lost that privilege today; you will have to earn it again.

At the moment, I just treat you as one of the Roman Catholic crew, I'm afraid! smiley

cool
i do not need some sort of previledge to be earned. My atitude towards you have been largely consistent! I will speak on what i think, it is yours to accept or reject!
Treat me the way you wish, i won't be bothered, i'll do you the curtesy of smiling at anything you say about me! And by God's grace that won't change me! I'll continue to treat you as you really are to me and that is a brother and consider each word you paste on nl be they insults or good points.
Lastly, i wasn't trying to preach to you, just airing my expectations, i still have much peaching to do to myself.

Peace
Christianity Etc › Re: My Problem With Catholism-An Introspection by Ubenedictus(m): 6:29pm On Apr 13, 2013
Enigma: Your answer is incomplete. And you have not performed the other part of the task: what did Jerome refer to as "the canon"?
an interesting question. Jerome canon was changing, a proof that it wasn't fixed. At first his old testament canon excluded d books not found in the jewish bible, later he adds them and says no one should blame him because he has decided to follow the decisions of the church.

Now just to show you that I could answer your question easily if I choose to: the definition you have given above does not say a canon must be agreed "at a council".
it says it should be authoritative!

Certainly some texts were considered to be "an authoritative list/collection of sacred text" at least before Athanasius in 367 (he said so himself); at the Nicea Council in 325 (otherwise why would they be arguing using books that were not authoritative?); and even well before Nicea as Athanasius suggests, saying "the books included in the Canon, and handed down, and accredited as divine".
hahaha, i imagined you were coming here, athanasius canon was missing many books in both old and new testament just to tell you there was no set canon, before athanasius many books were already under dispute this should clearly show you that the was no authoritative list.

So what was "the canon" that Athanasius on one hand and Jerome on the other recognised as already existing?
cool
i guess this was rhetorical.

Enigma: So now, I too am just going to treat you as part of the Roman Catholic dishonest and insult throwing crew.
interesting!
In any event, I even gave you a chance on another occasion; and on that occasion ou showed yourself to be one of them; except I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt. You remember when I asked you twice about the fellow who said the Bible was written by Catholics supported by the other who said it was written by Catholics for Catholics?
and i vaguely remember giving you an answer cordially, if that qualifies me as a pompous, insult throwing catholic then wow! I don't have a word of defense for myself.

So yes, you guys are dictating how you want to be treated. If you guys choose to maintain the dishonest and pompous approach, I too know how to deal with that. smiley
cool
hehehehe, accusations! Have it your way.

truthislight: The pope can be infellible as long there is "tradition" to cover all his extracurricular teachings and actions = infellibility shield.
With that open field and long rope to play ball how can he fail? = tradition of RCC.
hehehe, you meant with the traditions of the apostles abi?
Not minding this instruction:
NIV/ESV/
Now brothers, these things i have transferred so as to apply to myself and apollos for your good, that in our case you may learn the (rule): "Do not go beyond the things that are written" ...................
(1cor4:6)
........................................................................................
seriously you need to go back and read that passage again. And pray for a little understanding!

But he the pope seems to give care to his "traditions" only = infellibility of popes.
^^^ Why not? Even me self will be infellible with such long rope of tradition of no boundaries. cool
Can someone show me the boundaries of "tradition" if any?
the word of God doesn't seem have "boundaries" either its from scripture or tradition.
It is sharper than a two edged sword. Hehehe

--- Or, what do you understand by "the canon of the Bible"?

smiley

EDIT: this post has again been reedited after I accidentally modified it even unwittingly earlier! embarassed

cool
as regard scripture d merriam webster dictionary defines canon as "an authoritative list of books accepted as holy scripture".
Accordingly,
__canonical collection of sacred text refers to an authoritative list/collection of sacred text.
__the canon of the bible refers to the authoritative list of sacred text that make up d bible.
I have answer your task. Do well to answer the question.

Reyginus: Beautiful! I have to agree with you. But their is another problem. Looking at the era we had two popes, I find hard to figure out how this infallibility will function on any of the two.
now you've missed thing up again, there wasn't a time we had two popes! Instead there was a time we had two people claiming to be the pope. That simply means one was pope and the other was the anti-pope. The pope had the infallibility and the anti pope was either a schismatic or an heretic Or both.
Peace.

Enigma: I have not insinuated anything so far. In fact, I have tried to treat you as a honourable person and that is why I repeated the question several times.
thanks.

Anyway, it is all well and good to accuse a non-Roman Catholic of making "cheap insults" but not to see "cheap insults" when Roman Catholics who were not contributing anything to the discussion between two other people were calling others various things like "mumu", "fraud" etc. wink
No, problem! As I said, I will know whether to confirm what I'm beginning to think in my mind.
hey, easy!
A similar thing happened some weeks ago when i accused ihendi of picking at the trivial, that didn't imply that i didn't notice other people doing the same, i just didn't expect that from him. While arguements rage on nl, i expect some people to keep themselves from d mud throwing that has characterised nl.

Kay 17: Ok, I will concede to your definition and leave that issue for another time.

Given your definition, can you point out any *canonical collection of sacred text* used by the Christians before the 4th century. Note that a individual texts themselves don't count as a collection, rather a number of individual texts adopted together

I wouldn't mind historical references too.

Reyginus: Don't get it twisted, ube. It is not hypocrisy at all.
The catholic understanding of papal infallibility could be described as a permanent state of holiness. This neglects the fact that once anything is described infallible, the probability of it being peccable is zero.
In the light of first and second peter. The infallibility he exhibited in the writing of the scriptures was dependent on the inspiration from the infallible holy spirit. The assignments he carried out were done not under a state of permanent holiness but a temporary state of infallibity guaranteed by the inspiring holy spirit. While one, in this case is assuming infallibility, the other, Peter, only was infallible within the period of the inspiration.
here is where you got it all wrong. "infallibility" isn't some permanent state of holiness. Infact i doubt benedict xvi and francis even exercised infallibity at all.
Infallibity refers to what is taught, impecability refer to d man doing the teaching. the inspiration refers to what is been taught not to d person teaching. Peter could have been commiting a "sin" even while he was teaching infallibly. Because infallibility and impecability are different and independent. The pope isn't infalliable each time he talks on faith and moral but only when he is excercising his role as universal teacher and teaching faith and morals, he defines teachings by d help of d holyspirit. The also means most encyclicals though profitable aren't infalliable. Infallibility isn't some permanent state of holiness but a gift either excercise or not excercise.

While naturally i'll not pass by athanasuis' canon without discussing the tit and bits, today i'll pass.
Enigma: Let me even make the tasks a little easier somewhat still:

Here is Athanasius of Alexandria in a document going back to AD 367 (remember that even the 'Council of Rome' which is used for the fraudulent claim is dated AD 382 some 15 years later than this Athanasius' document).

Quoted from 39th Festal Epistle of AD 367 http://www.bible-researcher.com/athanasius.html

To keep things brief, I omit the rest listing the books he considered canonical.

Now see the words "the canon" which I bolded in blue? What did Athanasisus mean by "the Canon"?

Remember this was before each or any of the things/events which the Roman Catholics like to claim is where "they" established "the canon"!

That is, before any of the Council of Rome 382 (already shown to be dodgy), the African Synod of Hippo 393, the African Synods of Carthage 397 etc. --- let alone the real place where the Roman Catholics truly set their canon, at least finally, if they want to be honest --- i.e. Council of Trent 1546 etc! (Edited)
cool
athanasuis wrote in the 4th century you were asked to provide a list before the 4th century. Did you miss the question?
Christianity Etc › Re: My Problem With Catholism-An Introspection by Ubenedictus(m): 11:37am On Apr 13, 2013
Enigma: ^^^ Meanwhile he is the very same person who claimed earler on this same thread that Jerome must have had a "canon" before translating. He was going to base that on the fraudulent claim related to some Council of Rome until that was knocked down. wink
do you mind explaining the bolded?

So once the Council of Rome thing is knocked out, what "canon" was Jerome using and what "canon" did he refer to - that being one of the questions in the tasks I set Kay17 originally. smiley
cool
hahaha, what was knocked out?? That is really funny.

I'll swoop down and tell you that jeromes "canon" was of the 4th century! The question was that you provide a canon before the 4th century! You didnt even come close to answering the question.

Ihedinobi: And I consider you guys' insistence on avoiding the tasks he gave and replying with unwarranted insults and rather bogus accusations proof that you realize that performing those tasks will answer Kay 17's question in a manner that will demolish your arguments.

If you are not afraid that the tasks will effectively put paid to your arguments, why have you guys not even attempted to answer his question and make clear as day that Enigma is only avoiding the issue when he fails to respond in kind with his own answer?
because enigmas' task has nothing to do with the question he was ask. I ask for a president before 1999 and he is asking me to study the life of alhaji musa yar'adua and publish a report on it. That is a deviation
