@4 Play, i never disregarded management as an issue and i just assume that in a common sense disposition when government is building power plants they will also build distribution systems. I never dicounted management or maintenance as an issue but is that really the fundamental issue here? Managing what we don't even have?
I agree with You that what we have is just pittance compared to what we actually need. We need to build more. I don't care which one comes first----managing what we have or increasing on what we already have. All of these are positive steps but unfortunately we are doing none. That to me is the fundamental issue.

Sky Blue:
@Uche2nna, managing 5 Naira and keeping the note clean and all that, is not going to magically give you 10 naira is it? We need more facilities and we need to ,build more of these aggresively because this power problem has to be tackled. It is not about managing something that is not even close to enough to say the least in the first place even if the facilities were running at optimum.
It seems I have a different definition of management.  huh

Management to me includes being able to project into the future and make adjustments.

Kobo gave reasons why we might be having problems with power these days, if the Nigerian Government had made adjustments for that knowing that the population would always be on the rise, that power plants would break down and that new technologies would be available then we would not be having this conversation.

Kobojunkie:
We already addressed managment issue actually. Instead of continuing to kid ourselves and lie with hands folded for Nigerians to magically adopt a maintainance culture, I am down with outsourcing that portion as well. At least until we wake up and decide to start managing our facilities ourselves.
What do U mean by outsourcinghuhhuh Like the one between US and Mexico undecided

Or is it inviting foriegn companies? I believe we have gone over that option. undecided
PoliticsRe: Yar’adua Approves Higher Electricity Tariff by Uche2nna(m): 7:56pm On May 05, 2008
@ Kobo

U gave three reasons and honestly, I saw management written all over the three reasons.
PoliticsRe: Yar’adua Approves Higher Electricity Tariff by Uche2nna(m): 7:53pm On May 05, 2008
Oh, I just saw Sky's post.

Out-dated facilities, he says.

U guys might know the answer to this. Is 5000 mega watts due to the limitation of the kind of system we are using to generate our pwer these days or do we simply need to upgrade our facilites? Honestly, I dont know this answer to this. Maybe U guys might know.
PoliticsRe: Yar’adua Approves Higher Electricity Tariff by Uche2nna(m): 7:50pm On May 05, 2008
Kobojunkie:
@Uchenna, please expound on your idea that managing 5000MW will cause it to double and that will somehow light up all of Nigeria. I really would like to understand the reasoning involved here.
I was responding to a post that said we are not generating up to that. My question is why not? Wasn't the facility built to do that?

And then what is stopping us from generating enough mega watts to power the whole country? I would like to know what is limiting us to the amount of megawatts we have now  undecided
PoliticsRe: Yar’adua Approves Higher Electricity Tariff by Uche2nna(m): 7:44pm On May 05, 2008
Sky Blue:
I am still confused, exactly what are we trying to manage? Is it the generating facilities that cannot even give us up to a simple 5000MW? So managing this is the answer to our problems? Maintenance is an issue, but let it not take away from the fact that we need aggressive development and building in the power sector and many other sectors (if not all) in the country. When we build we can maintain. But maintaining a non existent power sector that $16billion was supposedly sank into?
I don't understand what You exactly confused about? Why are we not generating up to that amount of megawatts? Is it because we don't have the capacity or the personnel to do that? If we managed our resources well enough , we would have enough to produce twice that amount and then some.
Management and maintenance does not start only when You have something on ground. It starts way before that. Ask yourself, was the $16 billion actually put into the power sector? That is management right there for You.
PoliticsRe: Yar’adua Approves Higher Electricity Tariff by Uche2nna(m): 7:29pm On May 05, 2008
4 Play:
Nigeria's problem is not how to generate electricity but how to manage what we have.
Nigerian's problems summarised in one simple sentence .

We can blow all the grammar we want to and draw all sorts of antecedents and precedents, the fact remains that our problem has always been managing (I called it maintaining) what we already have.

It is good U guys have a rich culture to tap in and hey, I believe that Yoruba has a very rich cultural heritage. What I dont believe is that a particular tribe is "not allowing" another tribe to showcase its own heritage. I have heard a lot of tribal rants on NL but this takes the cake.

Instead of pointing fingers to the Igbo marketers, U guys should figure out how to bring in more yorubas to invest in thier HERITAGE. It is not as if U guys dont have the money. So what is the problem, bro? There is nothing wrong in waiting for the present crop of marketers to risk and invest thier money in nollywood epics but then it wont be a crime if u guys led the way.

d) Yes, the oil companies are mostly foreign companies.
That goes to show that inviting foreigners to come do stuff in Nigeria will not neccesarily ensure sanity. The powers that be (in Nigeria) woul;d always ensure that business is done the usual way. What makes U think that it would be any different?

Well, maybe it is time we borrow from what others who happen to be in our place are doing as well. Instead of sitting and waiting for our schools to churn out minds that can handle such without making us nervous. Others are doing it. I see no reason why we should not at this time since we are in dire need of it.
See , the money is there to emabark on stuff like this.
I believe if we search well enuff ,we might even have the personnel (Nigerians) that can carry out this.
These are not the problems. The problem is in our mentality and the way we run our government. We hired Okonji-Iweala but did it stop Obj from doing his thing?
We have to move in sensible and logical steps. Lets demonstrate a good maintenace culture in our roads, schools, hospitals and even the source of power we have now. Only when we can mangae that properly can we begin to think about cheaper , efficient but way more hazardous means of generating power. If u cant handle ur pennies, then there is no way U can handle bundle of dollars.

Nuclear again, is not about what you personally think of it. Fact remains, Nigeria has been looking at it and I am glad the president is stepping out towards it already considering we already know of african nations that have been living with it for over a decade now and are not complaining. Like I mentioned earlier, we already have some of the world's nuclear experts in France who are willing to help and if we pay them well, we can get energy asap. I think the initiative started by the Kwara government, bringing in experts to help where we have failed can be applied to a great deal in the nuclear area as well. Countries around the world are doing this. Even Syria and Iran and I see no reason why Nigeria should consider to stand in the corner shivering when the word NUCLEAR is mentioned, considering the alternatives do not seem as promising.
This has nothing to do with personal opinions. This is the reality we (Nigerians) are going to be facing once we go nuclear. Unless if our maintenace culture is going to change over night, then we really have to be careful about messing with radioactivity.

the idea that there is no such thing as peak oil IS the propaganda,,, and America is running out fast, don't forget that they have ceased to be able to meet their demands a long time ago,,, as the worlds "super power" being dependent on another country for oil is very undesirable. I'm sure if they found new reserves they'd happily say good bye to "teddy" and "Rudolf"

Dont knw if Nigeria is ready for nuclear energy, it requires alot of time and money to build and develop a nuclear reactor, plus there is the problem of storage and proper disposal of the waste radioactive uranium,,, when we can't properly manage common oil pipelines, u want them to handle radio active isotopeshuh
I guess U beat me to it

@ Kobo
Granted, Nuclear energy might be a cheap way to go, but knowing how well we are "schooled in the art of maintenace" are you not passing a death sentence to Nigerians.
I sometimes use radioactive elements in my experiments and I know the amount of training I had to go thru to even qualify to use that. Not to talk of the amount of paperwork that follows each quantity of isotopes around. And these are just very small quantities.

Keep the suggestions/opinion coming. I'm very grateful.

We did set rules about not sleeping over n visit should not exceed past 10pm , however, we broke it. God spoke through both of us during intense prayer that we have to stop going to each others places till we r mature enough to understand why God wants relationship to be holy.

About saying my man is a hypocrite, i don't know about that. He used to touch me and that was because he wanted me to learn to say no, which i did tried hard n he scored me 6/10 anyways i gave him the opportunity to do stuff with me which he didnt want to do but he did it bcuz he loves me n he thinks i will go for an outsider. so my guy not trusting me is that, he thinks that if another guy is trying , with me, i will find it hard to say 'no'. But i know that i will say no to other guys.

What am i so vulnerable? is it because i've had sex before? isn't it better for me to have someone like my boyfriend that cares a lot, virgin n he's ready to help whenever i'm ready.? he wants me to decide on my own bt he's ready to help.

anyways i will take some of your advise on board and I know that God will continue to help me overcome my biggest fear. I will sure put satan to shame

@ luca

I am not a fan of movies from Nigeria. I hardly watch them , except for laffs.

I agree that Nollywood is in dire need of some infusion of professionalism but the way You are advocating for that professionalism is nothing to write home about. Take it or leave it, Nollywood has attained some heights. Prior to the release of "Living in Bondage" (a movie that was mainly of Igbo cast) the Nigerian home movie scene was virtually non-existent. If it was existent, then it was definitely not commercially relevant. A movie might be critically acclaimed but the only way to stay in business is to also make it commercially succesful. Living in bondage was one of the few home movies that found a way to do that and today Nollywood is selling even tho most of the movies are crap. Imagine what the sales would be like if they found a way to make decent movies with very good storylines. NOW THAT IS THE NEXT LEVEL THAT NOLLYWOOD IS HEADING TO. And believe it or not, people are already thinking along those lines just like You are doing but the difference is the approach. A director , marketer, playwright, screenplay writer or even a marketer can come from any part of the country (the yorubas do not hold any exclusive right on story telling) as long as there is some level of professionalism.

You are complaining about "stereotyping" but this here is the most stereotypical post in this thread.

I am still waiting to see a  good argument on how the "Igbos" are stifling out other movies.
