Nigerians are generally lame ducks. Here is a foreigner coming to your country to found an Okada hailing service with a bulk of the revenue goung outside.

Before anyone dreamt of Uber or the idea of someone getting a ride on a stranger's car in the USA, we had Kabukabu. Sad that no Nigerian ever thought of removing the inefficiency of getting on a Kabu-kabu by connecting kabu-kabu riders to drivers that own kabu-kabu.
another way of looking at it

No guesses as to what our generation’s done to maintain (much less improve) on our fathers’ foundation.

Of course, wouldn’t dare compare Switzerland with Nigeria (being fortunate to have sampled both)...
For starters, Switzerland is not populated by sh*tholers and a population MAKES a country (not vice versa).

That is the idea behind the directive given to CBN. To inflate the price of imported foods so that consumers will not patronize them and that will give our locally produce foods the chance to compete. I see no harm in these, it’s a win win.

black market will thrive
cost push inflation follows
And Nigerians will cry even more

The govt instead should have put fiscal measures in place (even subsidising agric) to drive the prices down

ItsMeAboki:
Much as I respect Moghalu's intellect; however, in this case he seems to be playing politics by hiding behind a mere technicality of the CBN law to criticise the president - without taking due cognisance of the true realities on the ground.

Does he think a president who ultimately be held responsibly for the success or failure of the country's economy would remain aloof and not give policy direction to of the major influencing organs of the economy?

Secondly, was such order intrinsically wrong; is it ok for our forex to be wasted on importing food items that can equally be grown in this country - to the detriment of our own farmers and economy?

It's ok to talk about the independence of the CBN but in reality he should know that the Bank cannot be all that independent - especially as the president has the power of hiring and firing the CBN governor.

He also seem to be contradicting himself, having earlier criticised the president for interference then later down the line going on to lament that the entire economy had been subcontracted to the said bank.

Walahi I am with the president on this; Moghalu is just splitting hair for attention sake - to remain relevant.
The president has no power to fire the CBN gov

cbn must be independent

What are you saying? There is a reason why the Central Bank should be an independent body to prevent Political Interference. Kingsley Moghalu has explained clearly that political interference is wrong and the Banking institution should know its stance for the better of the economy.

After such explanation you write this. Shows you did not spend time to read the article to get the Former Presidential Candidates point.

Moghalu is 100% right and this is an eye opener. Stand for the truth and not sentiments.

You clearly have no formal education! If you had the slightest idea of basic economics, you would understand that a CBN restriction on forex for food importers will lead these importers to the black market where they would buy the dollar at higher rates. That cost will be shifted to we the consumers and eventually you'll have a "commodity price inflation".

Damod88:
Nigeria is a backward and poor country from time immemorial, even before the British came. We have never created any wealth for us to think of enjoying wealth. The wealthy countries you see today started creating their wealth more than 300 years ago. This was the reason the wealthy European countries colonized much of the world during the early days of their development. The proceeds from colonisation were what they used to finance major technological advances which led to more wealth creation. No country the size of Nigeria can become wealthy without the ability to create wealth through the power of science and technology. In the early years of our independence, our leaders focused too much on politics than development,in addition to the fact that the Europeans and Americans did not really wanted us to develop in order to legitimize their racist convictions that black people are incapable of modernity. And this was the time the East Asians started their economic development by becoming the world manufacturing hubs. Today, the sacrifices of the Chinese, Koreans, Singaporeans, and Taiwanese have paid off by having some of the world's largest multinational corporations in electronics. When you think of electronic you think of East Asians with global behemoths like Samsung, LG, Hiense, TCL, Panasonic, Sony, Cannon, Acer, HTC, Haier, Skyworth, etc. These multinational corporations generate billion of dollars in revenues in addition to creating million of jobs. They take the front seat in scientific and technological innovations with billions of dollars worth of R and D centres in addition to supporting innovation and research in Universities. While in Nigeria, especially with the discovery of oil, we began to build our economy around oil,an extractive industry the technology of which we don't have to actually take control of it.Our leaders were too naive to realize early on that extractive industry does not generate enough employment. For example, oil gives Nigerian government about 80 percent of its revenue but generates less than 2 percent of the total Employment. When we compare this with the Chinese economy, it becomes obvious that building economy around extractive industry especially by a populous country like Nigeria is unwise. The manufacturing sector in China accounts for 45 percent of the economy but generates the highest rate of jobs. Manufacturing generates jobs and lays a sound foundation for technological development. But if any of you think that Nigeria is going be rich with oil only, such a person will need to have a rethink. The problem we have now is that we have created so lazy, corrupt, unreasonable and uneducated population to start any meaningful development. Our political leaders are busy dividing us for their selfish interests without us trying to study to know why Nigeria is poor and backward. Nigeria will continue to slide into poverty because we don't have the means to create enough wealth for our people. Wealth creation is communative. We are suffering today because those who lived before us did not create any wealth the same way those coming after us are more likely to suffer because right now we are not creating any wealth. Heineken, a Dutch company, began as a family business more than 150 years ago and today it is a multinational corporations spanning four generations. Our problem is our inability to create wealth. If you sucribe to the naive argument often made by politicians that Buhari government has made Nigeria poor, you are only allowing yourself to be brainwashed.Nigeria has always been a poor country and will continue to be poor simply because we don't have the means to create wealth. I don't think any government can make Nigeria rich in the next 250 years even with the best of intentions. Five or six generations will have to be sacrificed, and of course, this is what we are incapable of doing. But we will keep on hating whoever that occupies Aso Rock, especially if he is not from our tribe no matter what he does to move the country forward.
I have to say this
