Yes, I am Nigerian though my family have been in South Africa for quiet a long time. I did my High school and University in South Africa, that really tells you how long we have been here.

Honestly speaking when our family got SA, South Africans were not as Xenophobic as they are now. If they were, they were good at hiding it. They would only make fun about how we speak and food but it never amounted to Xenophobia. In fact Nigerian man were a hot things then. South Africans then didnt even know where Nigeria is. Then came bad Nigerians in numbers, things fell apart.

But the nice part about SA is there are ghetto's which were built by the old apartheid government and some new government and there are surburbs which are nice places for middle and high income earners. So if as a foreigner you go live in the ghetto, they you are likely to have been a victim of Xenophobia. But if you live in the suburbs and mind your own business, highly unlikely that you will be a victim of Xenophobia.

In business and also jobs you are likely to experience xenophobia, reason being, Nigerians are know for scams so very few business wanna deal with us and also South African government have policies ( BEE ) to boast previously disadvantaged ( apartheid ) locals businesses, so as a foreigner you are the last on the list of their business partners unless you partner with a South African.

But if you are a doctor or any other careers educated particularly in South Africa, South Africa is a good place to benefit from your hard labour than Nigeria. It is also still a good African country to get their passport since they still have some respect for their education etc. and their black locals don't travel or migrate alot, so its always easier with a South African passport.

With regards to business, small foreign business really contribute but don't grow big because of BEE and the fact that South African are not too receptive to foreign businesses unless you partner with them. Yes Nigerians and other Africans have salons, scrapyards, etc. but its not really big businesses which are ready to compete even within SA with SA businesses of the same kind, let alone spread within SA. So its just family or individual businesses with no clear vision to spread but just a vision to support their families.
In South Africa ( black and white )business operate with a vision to operate in all their towns and cities through franschises which has really helped develop their small towns as well, so Nigerian businesses are not at that level. They are just businesses with very little vision. e.g. Shoprite, Mr Price, Steer, Spur, is likely to be in all cities, minor metropoles and even small towns, they are used to making a brand uniform all over by franchising and there are Nigerians who have bought franchises. But I have never seen a foreign owned business started in SA franschising within SA.

As a foreign woman with no SA passport or ID or Education, its not easy.But generally with recession, jobs have been scarce and poverty getting worse for locals and hence the locals blame it on foreigners.

But right now I am out of South Africa and I work in Saudi Arabia ( using their passport to my advantage ), but I will go back since my family is based in South Africa. My husband and I have also started building our financial portfolio in South Africa, so we may be in SA for a long time.

But don't believe everything by bloggers and journalists, it can be exaggerated. There are so many Educated Nigerians living in South Africa and making it. and there are so many Nigerians on blogs and social networks who have been to SA by internet but have never left the shores of Nigeria.

But the problem is not entirely on the government but also on citizens who misbehave and do unacceptable activities when they get to host countries.

I said some form of ban because it is not so obvious. The lady i met there confided in me that even if i apply the visa online that there is restriction on granting visas to Nigerians, although i believe it could be temporary.

Offcourse the fault is not entirely on the Nigerian government, but if they had done what is right and developed our country the level of people travelling abroad will be very minimal and it will be mostly the adventurous and curious ones who will go for either education, tourism, business or work as expats in other countries.

But things are bad that even someone who cannot locate the location of Nigeria in the map of Africa or even guess the continents of the world are all travelling out. These less enlightened categories of people are the ones that have spoilt the name of the country more, they are willing to go to anywhere, do anything to make money because money has become the primary source of happiness in the country.

You build your own house without any assistance, generate your own electricity, water, security, cater for your children and aged parents welfare and also plan for your own welfare when you are old. Nigeria has failed us?

Your name is feminine, and does the SA on it represent South Africa? If yes, considering their phobia for strangers and visitors, how is life over there for ladies? Is it in anyway better than it is for the male?

You are absolutely right on the disclaimer, the list is getting smaller by the day. just last year i went for business inquiry at the Sri Lanka consulate at Dubai and discovered there is some form of ban on Nigerians.

oh boy! your guy dey jail since early hours of thursday... i came to Deira from Abu Dhabi on wednesday by 12 mid night, the building i was in was raided from 1:30am by 2am i was taken to Naif police station. After i turned in my ID, at tge end i discovered that someone was impersonating with my ID and has a very serious case. I was released today but was called on phone to return to the station which i did. I'm still in jail using their wifi and the phone i came back in with.

Now on front page, i dedicate this thread to every Nigerian out there doing us proud. We stand out where ever we go.

I'll share my own experience as a Nigerian, i was sent to the rig with 4 cameroonians at almost the same time. I was the only Nigerian Rostabout, and 2 out of them arrived the rig before me but most people here still refer to all of us as Nigerians. When most foreigners see a black and they don't wanna call them Africa the next name that comes to their mind is Nigeria.

Please i need advice and opinions especially from those who are already studying or living in Australia.

Let's assume i have a budget of 2.5million Naira and i got admitted to a TAFE program in a regional area with a fee of about 12,000 Australian dollars annually or less which i will have to pay about 6,000 Australian Dollars and balance up the remaining fee subsequently when i arrive Australia.

And i spen't about 400,000 for my air ticket, visa processing and other arrangements such as IELTS, medical, visa fee etc. and i arrive Australia with the remaining balance of about 1 million Naira. Please what are my chances of working to pay my subsequent fees?

Do you think this idea is feasible in any way?

Living prudently, working and ready to work to the maximum limit during the school breaks that we have unlimited work hours (we work 12 hours here in the UAE), do you think i can take care of myself and be able to save for the fees?

Please pardon my rough estimate, i really need to be in Australia but i'm on a very low budget and it has been discouraging me for a long time. I have a feeling that very soon migrating to Australia will get very difficult based on Naija's reputation. I was shocked to discover last year when i went for a business inquiry at Sri Lanka high commission in Dubai that they have some kind of ban placed on Nigerians.

I will try my best to clarify this price complication the best way i can.

The price could be true but the requirements are much. Now about the price of the 3 months visa, from what i have seen and heard here, the price the agents charge is from 700USD and unlimited.

The reasons i learnt are because of the age limit issue most times the agents create a fake passport data page of either father or mother for you and apply for the two as if both of you are coming together when the visa comes out they will send your own copy. They also have to pay a security deposit to the immigration here of which they have to collect after you exit the country. Another thing is that most Naija agent here and in Naija doesn't have the license to do this visa so they will add their own money too and only God knows how many agent it will get through before it gets to you.

It's 1am over here and i'm very three as i type this but i hope that with this my hard written explanation the new guys here will get an idea why the cost of Dubai visa is very unstable and more expensive than the official price.

i will be asking questions from now onwards and i apologise for any question which might be considered irrelevant or stupid.

mean while, within my short period here, i ve seen about 3 nigerians working in oil company., though not on personal grounds cos somebody just pointed them to me.

Which Emirates do you live in? There are more oil activities in Abu Dhabi than all the whole emirates combined together. National Drilling Company (NDC ) is the only drilling company here although there are other service and supply companies like Zakher Marine, Baker Hughes etc. Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC ) is the mother company of National Drilling Company (NDC) and has a lot of stakes in other companies like ADMA, ADCO, ZADCO etc

Personally I know over 50 Nigerians that works in oil related fields here. I met over 35 during my trainings at my companies Drilling Training Center, very few at church and some when I went for my H2S and BOSIET course.

I wish to see a lot of Nigerians come here and I believe some of this little information that I'm giving will serve as a guide for further research. Like I said earlier, they come to Nigeria to recruit and they make use of proxy offices.

My Mexican friend told me a recruitment is going on in US right now, a lot of Chinese arrived last week, the Indians are coming almost on weekly basis, few eastern Europeans, Southern America etc Nigeria has it's fair share here.

Search for details about National Drilling Company(NDC ). They are doing massive recruitment from a lot of countries including Naija. A lot of Nigerians who were recruited in the last exercise has concluded their induction program and some has written their IWCF. Do your research very well, they should be in Nigeria soon for the next recruitment that's if they are not there already. This is as much information as I can give online. Goodluck in your research.

Residency is best but it means u have to be self employed and that means u have to be sure of what to do that will be generating cash for u always or better still you work.

Bed space is from 400 Dirhams upwards depending on the location of house and number of.people inside.

Ras Al Khaimah is the last Emirates in the UAE. It has a lot of mountains and rocks. It can get colder more than the other Emirates(I learnt it has snowed there in the past). The Emirates of Ras Al Khaimah is very close to Oman, less than 2 hours by road and some spend the Oman Riyals easily over there. it's a very small Emirate from my view although officially it is bigger than Ajman which is considered the smallest Emirate. It is also more developed than Fujairah but less developed than Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman in my own view(I haven't been to Um al Quwain). Ras Al Khaimah is more than 3 hours from Abu Dhabi.

This is the only thing I know about Ras Al khaimah as I have only been there once. In my personal opinion I will suggest you focus your attention in the Emirates of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Ajman.

For some reasons and favour I am now in the oil and gas industry. It's not all rosy for me now because I know the sacrifice I would be making ahead of me. As it stands, my greatest possession now is hope and faith for a better tomorrow.

I got in as a Rostabout from a labour supply company and looking forward for my conversion to a full staff of the drilling company I work for. Right now I'm somewhere in the desert undergoing a training as a Green Hat after I have completed my BOSIET, H2S, IADC Rig Pass etc and has got my certificate and cards.

I am full of uncertainty as I'm yet to go for my first rig rotation but the experience so far has been good. There is a high level of unity and oneness here irrespective of your positions. The Europeans, Americans, Asians, the locals and Africans all relate very well, no form of discrimination at all. The meals are great, breakfast starts from 4:45am till about 7am.

If money is not your main motivation, I will advice that most guys here especially those with certificate but no experience should consider going through labour supply company and start from the bottom position to get their experience. If labour supply company is not often used in Nigeria they might consider the middle east and return back to Naija when they have gathered experience.

For the big boys, especially those with the experience and qualification but no active contract or employment, you can consider moving over to UAE, the good news is that they respect we Nigerians and give us adequate opportunity to be employed into the top positions. Infact they employ directly from Nigeria and most Naija guys here have one or more good things to say despite the fact that the earning might be better back home. Last month alone, over 20 people arrived from Nigeria (including Rig managers, Ass. Rig manager, Driller, Asst. Driller, Electricians and mechanics) so keep your ears to the ground for their next interview in Abuja. Right now we are expecting over 10 new rigs and I believe there will still be more opportunities for new people, so do your research well.

CLUE: my company is the only active drilling company here in Abu Dhabi. So anyone interested can search for this company and create a Google Alert for the company so that anything posted about the company will be sent to their mails.

I am not the one with the tourist visa, my cousin is, because I am already working here in the Emirates of Abu Dhabi. There are different classes of tourist, such as medical etc There are many motives of which one can visit a country and according to UAE law it is legal for people to search for employment with tourist visa and after which the company processes their Employment visa under their sponsorship. I also know that tourists are allowed to shop for as much as they want and shopping seems to be the basic business here in UAE.
