Im a graduate of industrial chemistry and currently work in an FMCG, with over 5 years of working experience, no travel history. I want to relocate to New Zealand. I have seen vocational courses to apply for since their fees is not quite expensive. Its a 12 weeks course, my question is
1) can i work during my 12 weeks as a student?
2)after my visa expires can i change my status of my visa to live permanently or have work permit? Because i don't want to come back here to Nigeria once i leave.

Thank you for calling my attention to this post. It's good that you got a chance to clarify your view and position on this issue, at least everyone who reads this is able to see things from your own view.

I also understand how it feels when despite all your efforts to protect and uphold your integrity then for some reason, the same integrity is being put to doubt or questioned. However, in all of these, the people stood behind you unconditionally except for maybe a few. This should go a long way in reaffirming your integrity because I strongly believe that the opinion of the people should be an accurate guage to measure up integrity.

At this stage, I will plead with you to let go of all grievances and come back to the community again. I remember on some occasions where people tried to talk you down on the thread, you were able to rise above the negativity and still carried on with your act of selflessness. As Justwise has mentioned that he has reduced your ban to 4 days, please just let go and let's move on. Remember who suffers when two elephants are fighting?

However, I plead with you to also let go of this case, with time everything shall be forgotten and we will move on. You will definitely agree with me that if you look beyond this issue at hand that Bellong has been an awesome guy. It's not easy to be a law enforcement or in the position of judgement especially one where you have to act based on your understanding or interpretation of a law or rules. With no doubt, you have contributed so much to the travel section that at a point, I started thinking if you are a BOT... lol

It's been almost a year since I was active on this thread, I came here as soon as I noticed the situation at hand.

@Justwise, please give Bellong a second chance. He has been really helpful around here and always willing to help out. I have been visiting Nairaland since 2005 and a large part of the time was spent on travel section. In all my experience here, there are very few people who are as resourceful and genuinely helpful as Bellong. I don't really know what happened, but I know he is a very reasonable person and should be able to put things in order if given the chance to. I know him to be a very humble person.

Please consider the plea of the people here including mine. In the little I have read of this whole saga, I haven't seen anyone who has come here to accuse him or justify the ban. Majority supports that he is given a chance. If he is really of a questionable character, many people would have flooded the thread with many accusations.

If he has personally offended you in any way, please forgive him and let's put this whole phase behind us. If there is any condition that you want him to meet before you release him from the ban please make it clear just as you stated what you want before the thread was opened. Thank you Justwise as I hope you consider our plea.

Hi to everyone reading this, I have gotten a big problem with my uncle

He recently helped me to get a job in a foreign owned company. He introduced me to most of his colleagues and Co-workers as he is nephew and in the process I get to meet one of his senior manager who said he would take me under his unit once I resume for duty.
The problem is that the senior manager is never in good terms with my uncle and my uncle never told me this. Not until I started working with him and he began to show me hell under his unit.

He always insult me and embarrassed me in front of everyone, he even go as far as harassing me by hitting me with a book on my head.

To him I am not good enough at my job and he pile up the job of 4 people for me all alone to do on daily basis. I have no single day off since I resumed working with him including weekends.

I let my uncle know about my situation, since it is because of him I am going through all this (Note, he later told me that he was never in good terms with him)
I was 100% about quitting the job when I called home and told them that I can't take this punishment anymore, the punishment I never bargained for .
But he persuade my mom to talk me into staying and that the situation is not as bad as I am portraying it to be. He assured my mom that everything will get better in the future if I show endurance and keep working every single day of the week.

My people is this fair? What kinda job is this without a single day of rest? The terrible man they placed me under wouldn't even allow me to do my work properly, everyday he kept threatening me with sack and insult.

THE POINT OF BETRAYAL
With all my situation worsening and no help in sight and my mum threatening me never to return home if I leave the job, what should I do?
I have no choice but to head straight into the office of the executive director to lay down my complaint. And so I did.
I went straight into the executive director office with heavy fear in my heart because he's a person that you can't get easy access to, but in my situation I have to do what I have to do. Luckily for me, he listened to me and provided help by changing my department and taking me out from the terrible manager I am working with.

NOW THE PROBLEM
My uncle have a good working relationship with the executive director and the news spreading around the company is that it is because of my uncle influence that I have the guts to barge into the director office to demand a change of department.
My name has been on everyone lips for the past week. They don't believe that I went all alone in to the office, they are also accusing my uncle of having a hand in it. They also said that I have done what no one has ever done in the company.

Now this whole thing is affecting my uncle negatively, he said all the top management have now set their attention on him. He said that for me a newbie to gain direct access to meet the executive director, while some of the top managers can't even try it shows how arrogant he has become. And they are Saying that I can cause problems for them once any of them make me angry.

MY CONFESSION
To God who made me, I have never had any intention to hurt my uncle negatively at his work place. I only want a safe place to work in peace and free from constant threats and harassment.
My uncle said his job is no longer safe because of my desperate act and that all his colleagues has ganged up on him right now. He said that he regretted employing me.

Please nairaland family help me where did I go wrong, I only want a safe place from my terrible manager and now everything has spiral out of control. Everyone is talking about me and my uncle, even in my new department.

Should I finally quit this job and damned the consequences or should I stay and mind my business with no one talking to me. Please advise.

With time all these phase will pass... Just maintain your lane and sanity. Do your work with your best. Gain all the necessary experience and start looking for job while you're on this one. If you get a better offer move. Even your overall oga na human being like you and should be easily accessible to everyone. Na our Naija mentality they cause all these over importance. When I joined my company, my CEO was on holiday, once he came back, he came to look for me and other new employees that joined when he was away and personally give us his business cards. Every now and then, we do go for drinking and if he fails to show up he apologizes in the next general meeting. Even the founder comes in once in a while. I'm talking of billions of dollar worth company with over 60 years presence.

that's what anyone who doesn't know anyone in a place of work would have done (I believe u have heard of due processes ) ... I understand your colleague's sentiments too because if it wasn't your uncle's influences, tell me where you would have gotten such guts to go direct to the top to demand for a better working conditions except if u were indeed determined to resign...

Since it was your uncle that helped secured that job for u, when u heard that you will be working with so and so, what every reasonable person should have done was to call your said uncle and ask.. Uncle I heard I will be working with so and so in his unit, what is it like working with him or under him ?..

Dear, throw your energy into your job.. when u were confused and encountered problems, Ask for guidance from collegues and take that job as a challenge... a lot of people love challenges to prove their worth in a place of work.. quit dwelling under your uncle's influences.. show that uncle or no uncle, no one can pull you down based on your job ethics or have a reason to complain..

I must also say that your Uncle made a very big mistake by introducing you as family.. That doesn't help anyone... Even when u were promoted people will feel it was due to your uncle's influences... even when u are working so hard to make it to the top... he was wrong for doing that...

Teaching is very good and lucrative, and they are mostly having shortage of skilled teachers every now and then. To practice here you need some form of registration.

Cover letter is a very important component for visa application especially those that visa interviews are not compulsory. It's on the letter that one will answer possible questions that would have been asked if the immigration officer is to interview he/she. It's there that one gets to explain his individual circumstances, full reason for travel, the value it will add to his life, his socioeconomic status amongst other things. Knowing how to draft this letter is another thing.

I don't know where you are migrating from or the type of life you live there. My guess is that you're probably coming from another western country in order for you to get this type of offer or you're in a highly specialised field. Without mincing words, At $75,000, I believe you have a very good offer and will be able to live a comfortable life in Hamilton. At 75,000 that's around $35 per hour which is above average salary here.

Accomodation: I have seen 2 Bedrooms from around $280 per week at Hamilton East which is a walking distance to the university of Waikato. You can also get 3 bedrooms usually from around $350 upwards per week.

School: The public schools are usually free but you have to buy stationeries which is still affordable. You have to make some voluntary donations and pay for other non academic activities. I think it's compulsory for them to play at least one sports so you have to make that happen. But generally all these doesn't cost much. Your second child who is 4 years old will have to attend an Early Childhood Education Centre or a form of preschool which the government usually funds the first 20 hours. Your first child must be enrolled in school because it's compulsory for any child who is already 6 to be in school. I have never seen a school bus here, lol. I think it's compulsory for you to drop them off at school when they are young and of certain age which I'm not sure of. The quality of education here is generally good so your kids should be well taken care of.

Shopping: for groceries, I use Pak'n'save and Countdown for fruits and booze. I buy rice and some spices from Indian shops such as Binn Inn, Yogiji and the likes. For Maggi(seasoning) I buy powdered knor from Wellmart Chinese shop. For bread I buy from coupland bakeries but you can find their breads in some Dairies (supermarket) around. I buy very basic clothes from Kmart and warehouse and better ones mostly from Hallenstein Brothers or Farmers, sometimes under armour, puma or Rebel sports. I use my AA smart card(you can get it for free at Countdown or the mentioned petrol stations) for discounts to get petrol mostly from CALTEX or BP. The price for petrol is not stable but average price is $2.2.

Traffic congestion is not much here although those who has been here most of their life complains about traffic congestion on some route but it is well below average and only happens for a few hours in a day. Under normal circumstance, I drive about 19 minutes to work if the road is free but during peak periods it take me about 45 minutes at most. The highest I have ever had was a day an accident happened on a particular busy spot and the traffic had to be diverted, it took a little above 1 hour on that day. My route happens to be one of the busiest in Hamilton.

Generally, Hamilton is a bit laid back and the quality of life is a bit high. At first you may find it boring but with time you will start adjusting to it. We have a growing Nigerian population here(not as much as bigger cities elsewhere) and some other Africans and live mostly within 25 minutes drive. We do play soccer most evenings in summer months and have a little get together every now and then.

The passport you sent to SA is just for capturing of data and it's return doesn't mean they have reached a decision on your application. South Africa doesn't handle your visa assessment. As for the application timeline, I have seen who got his PhD study visa in 2 months and another in over 4 months. Don't worry, just be a little bit patient, PhD study is a quite flexible so you can still get your visa and come over at a later time just keep your university updated on your progress. Good luck with your application.

Kindly clarify that.

Teaching as a profession and many other trades requires that but I'm sure welding doesn't require any registration. what they normally ask for welding is that you have at least a level 4 certificate in welding or many verifiable years of experience in it. Once you're here you can get your welding tickets.

I get your point, Auckland is about the only place where I feel alive here... I like the busy and bigger cities. Unfortunately I haven't been to Wellington yet. As for Huntly I heard lots of negative stories about the place which I didn't take serious until I have my own personal experience. I will never live there for any reason.

It's achievable, it all depends on your lifestyle, how long and hard you're willing to work and your pay rate.

I'd like to know what jobs can one apply from Nigeria that can help get an employer to sponsor one?

My answer will be biased based on my experience here. I will say it's mostly trades such as welding. I have seen lots of my colleagues been hired from overseas, and many others who are already here move jobs easily. I think welding job is promising here and it's mostly in Skill shortage lists of most countries. However, in Nigeria, most trades are highly underated. we look at them as a poor man's job and as such we don't have a proper system for apprenticeship or internationally recognised vocational education framework/certification.

In addition to these, I have seen Nurses, Teachers, and just few weeks ago my colleague's brother came on a work visa to work for a forestry company.

He could be making the inquiries for a family or friend back home or he might have studied in Australia and have gone back home at the end of his studies/post study visa if he has no option of converting to a residence or work visa. Congratulations on becoming a Kiwi and well-done for keeping the thread alive. Many people may not understand how much sacrifice you make in order to respond to the queries here especially when we consider the time difference. Many times I have set out to respond to questions, typed half way and then break is over at work(you can only use phone during break or after work) or one thing comes up and that will be the end.

To everyone who is considering making a move here, I will say go for it if you have the resources and opportunities to come here legally. Working condition is good, quality of life is nice and the people are very polite and respectful. Your rights are protected and generally it's safe here. However, if you're not going to be in Auckland prepare for a laid back life which was a challenge to someone like me at first.

Lagos Traffic is caused by bad driving habits and lawlessness. Hence, it can't make a the top 10 list. If we bring sanity to Lagos Roads, there will be less traffic. However, those listed cities have normal drivers, no bike(Okada) no Tricycle (keke Merwa) no danfo drivers, no driving against traffic (one way) but still have crazy traffic. That's how to pick stats.

Lagos Traffic is a joke beside Dubai traffic. I remember how a journey of just 5km, that can be trekked within 15mins took 1hour via Dubai taxi

Please what are the documents to show evidence of family / economic ties in Nigeria? I graduated from a University in South Korea last year. Presently l am under a post study visa but I don't have a permanent job.

I got a PhD offer from the University of Auckland with full scholarship. I don't want to apply for the study visa from South Korea. I want to travel and apply from Nigeria. Abeg how I go carry proof these ties things? No job for naija and I am single. My father has some land documents(na this one dey give me small hope) I can use.

I know someone that just moved over from Korea ... I will ask the person to know which step they took.

Well you are right. The visa process takes a long time now and providing evidence as a bona-fide is even more difficult.

This visa ll expire in 14 months from now so I factored the long process in. I used the 8 months for like worst case scenario.

We re hoping to get 1year extension as the program is like a pathway style. 1 year for a part and if the student qualifies he/she gets variation to visa and get 1 additional year for stay in NZ for the other part of the prog. We can't stay beyond as the student is on a scholarship and one for them they don't get work permit afterwards they have to leave NZ with their families within 2 weeks

Kindly give tips on how to convince the Visa Officer that you ll come back when visa expires.

You will really need to be patient and consistent with every single detail you give to them. Things to consider will be, explaining in details on your statement of purpose what you have been doing, your plans in New Zealand and what you intend to do once you're back home. Your socio-economic status, how long you have been married, If there is a child who may not be coming with you it helps too. If you have Landed and/or other assets good. You will also have to find a way to show them that your stay in New Zealand will add value to your life and make you better when you return home. I would have been able to advise better if I know your personal circumstance which is unique from one applicant to another. However, I think you will be fine with the visa and I've never heard o anyone on your visa category who has overstayed their visa in recent times.
