Nigerians are no doubt sets of wonderful people, no matter where we are in the world, we can adapt to any situation and weather condition, our tenacity has made us excel in all ramifications that even the international world seems not to understand us again, every of their prediction has been defeated that at times they wondered, what manner of people are these... We are spenders, and we love the good thing of life. Cars are such of things an average Nigerian see as a must have even if it means to take a loan, steal or by any means to get it. We are an import driven nation, anything import catches our attention. AutoReportNG did an investigation as to why Nigerians cars are not sellable after the owner must have gotten tired of the car or maybe he has a new one, and he decided to free his garage. Please note, not all cars are not re-sellable, but, almost 70-80% of the cars are not in any way re-sellable that even if you have to resell it, it will be in the form of a scrap thereby losing its monetary value and uses. These facts are what we see mostly as the cause, you may add yours in the comment box.

1. Bad Roads

Nothing makes a car wear out faster than a bad road, even if you buy the latest and costliest car in the world, it's just a matter of time before the car becomes a scrap. In a country of ours where good roads seem to be a privilege and not a necessity. I have seen rich men who have exotic cars but can't drive it because the road to their home is a death trap, I then asked, what is the essence of buying it then when you know your road is not good.

2. Bad Maintenance Culture

A philosopher once said the easier way to kill a black man is to put the solution of an ailment in a book, they won't read it! Nothing deforms a man faster than one who does not read or has a lackadaisical attitude. It's only a Nigerian man who won't service his car until when the car breaks down. My neighbor hardly puts water in his radiator until when the car gives a warning sign. If the owner of a car lacks a proper maintenance of his car, it's only a matter of time before the car becomes a shadow of its self. Maintenance includes the body of the car, the upholstery, engine among others. A mechanical engineer once said, you must service your vehicle at least, once in 2 months, so asked yourself, when last have I maintained my car?

3. Mechanics

Shout out to all our fantastic mechanics, people like Kazeem, Morufu, Chukudi, Abdulahi, etc. What can we do without these guys? These guys can make or mar the destiny of your car. They are always our last resort and people we can call at any time to fix our car, and they will be around, but have you asked for your certification? The damage being done by these mechanics can not be overemphasized, yes, they may seem reliable, affordable and always timely, but when you carefully study the way and manner they operate your car, you will run away from them. Some may manipulate some parts so as to make the profit for another one thereby destroying the core part of the car. My uncle's car becomes a scrap after his mechanics exchange some parts from the engine and the engine knocked off.

4. Spare Parts

There comes a time where your car will develop a mechanical fault or when it has to undergo tear and wear, and when the components are not readily accessible, it's as good as nothing in the first place. When the spare parts of a vehicle is scarce, it makes the vehicle redundant and not ready to use, selling a car with no spare parts will take an eternity to see a buyer, except if there is a match or maybe you sell it off as scrap.

5. Nigeria Drivers (Taxi, Danfo, Keke Napep, Trailers, Okada)

The Yorubas has a saying that a man who wears a white cloth/linen should not go to where they are selling palm oil. The literal interpretation of this is that a nobleman should distance himself from shady or questionable acts. Nigerian drivers are set of crazy sets of folks, at times you wonder how come these ones got their driving license because of the way and manner they drive. Danfo drivers don't mind turning your Range Rover Vogue to a nightmare, the fear of the abokis driving the trailers is definitely the beginning of wisdom, when they face you, you won't know when you divert into the bush. Many car owners have met their waterloo in the hands of these set of people which makes their cars completely right off.

Addendum:
Poverty is considered to be one of the main factors why Nigerians hold on to a car for some long. Imagine someone who bought his first car at the rate of 500,000 naira and the car has gone up to 5million naira, where do you expect such a man to see that type of fund? He would rather continue using the one he has with him instead of selling it off and he will start over again.

1. Lagos business school can’t teach you how to read people
Reading people and understanding body language are very important to succeeding in business and in life:
• You have to learn to listen to what’s being said and how it is being said.
• You have to learn to listen to what’s being said but not being vocalized.
• You have to observe people “aggressively.”
• You will have to talk less to automatically learn more.
• You will have to notice first impressions.

2. Lagos business school can’t teach you how to create lasting impressions
You need to learn how to make business gestures that will be appreciated and remembered by the other party like:
• Asking about and then doing something for one of their kids on day one.
• “Freeing” people after you both have an agreement but circumstances have changed and they honestly can’t keep up.
• Bargaining softly on deals important to the other party so that more long term opportunities can be created.
Make business mentors and confidants – people you trust who you can seek advice from. Be totally discreet- anytime you talk about another person, the person listening will wonder what you tell others about them. Respect confidences.

3. Lagos business school can’t teach you how to follow your intuition
Every entrepreneur who has been successful will understand winning through intuition – when everything isn’t quite right except that inner feeling. Nothing in a textbook or case study can explain this.
Being intuitive means knowing what people want before they know they need it and finding a profitable way to give it to them. The perfect example is the late, Great Steve Jobs and the iPod he gave us.

4. Lagos business school can’t teach you humility
Humility is a great business attribute. It can win even the most negative customer over. As an entrepreneur or business executive, you have to learn to say these phrases:
• I don’t know: it is best than presenting a know-it-all approach. It also shows your humanity and your clients will trust you more for being truthful. Not knowing something isn’t a crime however, offer to refer clients to someone who does.
• Help me: one big reason businesses fail is because someone wants to do everything alone. Learn to delegate because it is foolish to insist on doing everything yourself.
• Sorry, I was wrong: We all make mistakes. It’s human nature to however, what matter is how you handle them. Readily admitting you were wrong makes a far greater impression than making excuses or outright denial.

5. Lagos business school can’t teach you how to close a sale
Closing a sale starts from your first meeting with a prospect till when you get a cheque for an order. Selling is the fastest way to the top of the company.
However, reaching the top without exceptional knowing how to persuade is almost impossible. The art of Salesmanship is a life skill.

6. Lagos business school can’t teach you the art of timing in Business
This, you learn from experience. You have to know:
• When to pitch a business proposition in an informal setting
• How to pitch it
• When customers wants you to sell them
• The best time to sow the seed of an idea
• When to send a “Thank You” card
• When best to ask for a pay rise
• When to close a deal based on the customer’s body language
All these and all have to do with timing in business and you can only develop it intuitively.

7. Lagos business school can’t teach you “The Art of Silence”
Learning how to use silence is a skill not taught in business schools. However, Silence is a powerful tool you an use to know what is on your prospect's mind - the real excuse for not wanting to buy NOW!

It either lets the prospect or client to talk or “forces” them to person to talk. Generally, the first person to talk is the more “uncomfortable” party in business negotiations.

8. Lagos business school can’t teach you how to market yourself
• You need to learn how to connect with people on a human level – way beyond the generic business networking concepts. You have put your humanity behind your product and the people who buy it.
• You have to learn to dress the part
• You have to know your product at subconscious level or people will resent your efforts to sell it. Every fibre of your being has to believe in it; nothing can hide that.

Winter tyres? In Nigeria??

I am sure you are currently battling with these questions at the moment.

Sure, some of us drive with winter tyres in Nigeria.. knowingly or unknowingly. The problem is, these winter tyres damage our roads as they become soft and sticky in hot weather thereby peeling the road surface quicker. Some of them even have metal studs/spikes which cause further damage to our roads. You would even hear the noise of the studs grinding on the road or the tyres sticking to the ground when the cars are driving close to you.

How many of us ever did a thorough inspection of the tyres that came with our cars from USA, Canada and Europe? Go check your car tyres right away.. ensure it does not have the M+S symbol which stands for MUD & SNOW and/or the three-peaked mountain with snowflake symbol as seen in the attached picture.

Several accidented cars are shipped to Nigeria and a reasonable chunk of those accidents are caused by snow... which means those cars may have been running on winter tyres.

By law, you are not meant to use these tyres during summer because they are bad for hot and dry pavement. Only summer tyres can give you the safety and performance you need in warm weather.

With their special compounds and tread patterns, winter tyres are designed to stay soft and flexible in cold conditions, providing traction and grip in low temperatures on wet and icy surfaces. But with the hot weather in Nigeria, they lose this advantage, grip declines and the tread starts to wear faster as the tyres become soft and sticks to the hot roads.
