There are many ways of earning money online. But due to the harsh economy, I want to share two ways to make money online without spending money. These two methods have nothing to do with Ponzi schemes which you have to put money into it (which are quite risky) or “Yahoo business” which is illegal (and also quite risky). By engaging in what I’m about to share, you have absolutely nothing to lose but more to gain.

Like I have said, you don’t need a dime to start earning. All you need is your a smart phone or computer and internet connection plus a little bit of spare time on your hands daily. You need to take time to learn these two sure methods and be patient while learning. If you take out time to learn, you may even start earning more than your high paying regular job.

Method 1

Freelance:

You have probably heard or read this word repeatedly. What you may not know is that the word freelance goes beyond writing. Not everybody is gifted in writing but there are other things that we are individually gifted at. Whatever it may be; transcribing, editing audio and video files, blogging issues, proofreading, foreign languages etc, there is an opportunity for you to make money off it. I mean your natural ability could be of high demand and earn you an income. This is why you should not sit down and assume making money online is a complex task. It is not.

How it works:

You offer services (referred to as job or gig) and get contacted by a buyer who needs the services. You both discuss the workload, amount and other issues. The buyer pays the freelancing website and then you can commence work. When you’re done, you deliver the work and the freelancing website pays you for that job if the buyer is satisfied with the work.

Advantages:

- You can choose at what amount you want to earn. The more you work, the more you earn.
- It is easy for you to register and start working.
- You get your payment directly from the freelance company. In this way, you never have to worry about whether you will get paid or not.
- You earn money from freelance without even doing the work. (This is a special secret I will share some other time).

How to start:

To begin with, there are a number of freelance sites online now. Examples are Fiverr, People per hour, Gigbucks, SeoClerks etc. Some are more profitable than others. What you need to do is to register on the site of your choice and start selling.
(Tip: I will explain in details in the coming weeks using a DIY approach on how you can make good money as a freelancer).

Method 2

Affiliate Marketing:

Over the last couple of weeks, I have explained the goldmine that is in affiliate marketing. What you probably don’t know is that anyone can engage in affiliate marketing, even an undergraduate and it is not time consuming. In brief, affiliate marketing is an online activity where you promote products and get paid a commission for every sale that is made through your promotion.

How it works:

Once you sign up to an affiliate program, you can then select the products that you want to market. It is important that you choose what the market needs (or what people will like to buy). Once a sale is made through you, you will get a percentage (commission) from it. How then do the companies know they made a sale through you? They know because once you sign up with the company as an affiliate marketer, you will be given a unique tracking link to use when promoting their products.

Advantages:

- You get to work at your own pace. i.e. you can determine when to work
- Unlike Fiverr where you only earn a pay for a specific work, with affiliate marketing, you can earn repeatedly from each time you work.
- Once you automate it, it can keep fetching you money without your attention for days.
- You get paid directly by the company, hence no delay
- It is less time consuming.

How to start

You sign up at an affiliate market place. There are a couple of them online such as Click Bank, Commission Junction, Share A Sale, Pay dot com etc. I personally advise people to go for click bank which is where I make my money from. Once done, I will also advise that you focus on evergreen niches like health, wealth, relationship etc. Evergreen niches always make money on regular bases.

In summary, nobody has a reason to remain completely idle. There are many opportunities that you can tap from to create financial streams for yourself. One interesting point to note about the above methods is that they are independent of the economy of Nigeria. So, even if the country is feeling the heat of a contracting economy, you can make still make money and live comfortably.

In this trying economic times, those with the need and desire to own their own homes might have to revert to low cost home building techniques, a low cost home does not necessary mean a low quality home, rather it means a home that is structurally and functionally sound but may lack the fancy bells and whistles needed to compete in the” I pass my neighbors” category. The following ten ideas if dutifully followed would enable the average Nigerian teacher parents own a decent two or three bedroom home.

(1) Reduce the area of the home: there’s always the tendency to overbuild especially when building a home for the first time with the emotional attachment involved, but to keep costs down, there’s need for a clear headed analyses in order for the family to get the home they need and can afford rather than burdening themselves with the home they desire and can’t afford, thus they need to ask themselves basic questions like do we really need a third/guest bedroom, the dining room(experience world over shows that people hardly uses their dining room),ante room, visitors toilet, prayer room, exercise room, home office, en suite toilets etc? (2) Well designed multi use spaces: a well designed bedroom with a good furniture plan can be a bedroom, study room and home office all rolled together into one, a dining room/area can also serve as a study room, home office and game room if well planned. What makes a home functional is the thought exercised in its design rather than its square footage or cost of construction.


(3)Avoid swampy soils: nothing pushes up the cost of construction more than building on swampy/waterlogged soils that need expensive foundations like raft and bored piles foundations.try as much as possible to buy land with dry and strong soils .

(4)Avoid site preparation costs: avoid lands that would need filling, grading and rock blasting. Such site preparation costs would push up the total costs of your new home.

(5)Simple roof design: aim for simple roofing styles with low pitch and less corners. The cheapest home to roof is a rectangular shaped structure without gables. High roofs look more impressive but cost a fortune. Aim for something simple.

(6) Less windows and glass: Glass looks good but it’s costly. Carefully place your windows to eliminate waste.aim for standard sized windows and eliminate any fancy glass.

(7)Fewer bathrooms: one of the latest fads of modern building designs is the advent of en suite bathrooms which means that each bedroom comes with its own bathroom. The most costly rooms to build in your home is the bathroom so reducing their numbers to the absolutely necessary minimum is a vital step to reducing the total cost of constructing a new home.

( Incorporate fewer corners into the design: the easiest house to build is a rectangular home with a rectangular roof. Incorporating corners, curved walls and slanting walls while been visually more pleasing would dramatically push up cost. Avoid these like the plagues if you’re intent on lowering costs.

(9) Go for a minimalist finishing and ornamentation: fancy roofing sheets, concrete fascia (so called parapet), window hoods, arches, tiled walls, decorated pillars, moldings, elaborate pop designs etc are all nice but not necessary features that would quickly push up the cost of constructing a new home.

(10) Hire professionals: it’s often a false economics to design and build your own home because there are always places where you commit costly mistakes that would cost even more to remedy. Likewise, the bricklayer is not an architect neither is he an engineer. Use the right professionals for the job to avoid costly mistakes.

I have often advocated in my previous threads that every Nigerian should at least own a business. This is the fastest way to alleviate poverty. In as much as the government keeps sharing bags of rice and other stipends, people will continue to suffer because their immediate desire is being met but their long term need is left unattended to.
In this article, I want to highlight the basic steps you can take so as to start your own business. These steps are applicable to both online and offline businesses.

1. Generate an idea:

This looks like the easiest part, but it is not. This is where many businesses crashed even before they took off. As opposed to what many people think, an idea is not just what comes to your mind randomly and you feel is noble for a business. An idea is a need that you recognize which has the potential to fetch you money while you need it. The idea you have will be stronger if it comes from having been in a position/place to see or experience for yourself what you need or what others need. Once you can feel that need (and not just think it) it will create in you the passion for the business.

2. Acquire necessary information:

Now that you have come up with a brilliant idea, it is time to gather facts. I talked with someone last month who started a business which he was already pumping money into but had no idea how the business runs. That’s pathetic. At this point, you need to acquire information so as to understand the dynamics of the business, the population of the market, the competitors etc. Once again, don’t assume; instead, do research. Carry out market surveys, visit those already in the business to see things for yourself and get acquainted to the “how” of the business.

3. Time to brainstorm:

Now you have your idea and you have the basic information about the line of business that you want to delve into. It is now time to think. It will surprise you that very few people think. Most people just act solely on instincts. That is not good for business. Brainstorm on what you can do better, how you can cut down on production cost, how you can seize your own share of the market, what you can do to give you an edge over your competitors etc.

4. Create a simple business plan:

The business plan will serve as your guide. Yes, you know everything already and it is in your head but still, write it down. Research has shown that whatever you write down on a piece of paper actually burns deep into your mind which in turn makes you naturally conscious of it. Write down the basics of the business plan such as your vision, your mission, objectives, strategy, SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) etc. Once you do this, you will have a clear cut direction of where you are headed. remember the 6p formula that says "proper prior planning prevents poor performance"

5. Do Reviews from time to time:

Set aside time to periodically assess your business. This goes beyond the daily or weekly inquiry into the profits of your business. When you do a review, you take a holistic look at your business to find out what is not working and what you can do to improve it. Often, you will find out strategies that are obsolete and ineffective. Also, you may notice a strategy giving you unusual hits. Whatever the case may be, ensure you prune the business regularly so it will yield more growth for your business. Zoom into methods that work and let go of those that are not working.

6. Learn to identify opportunities:

There are plenty opportunities that you can take advantage of to boost your business. It may be in the form of publicity for your business or even loans or grants. Learn to look out for them. In fact, those with businesses are more likely to be picked than those without one if an opportunity shows up. Don’t assume that such opportunities are not for you. Take the leap wherever and whenever you can. If you do, it will give accelerated growth to your business.

7. Get a mentor/Model:

This is highly important in virtually every field of human endeavor. The tragedy of the youths of today is to think strength is a substitute for experience. A mentor is someone that models the success that you desire. For this purpose, such a person will be very valuable to provide you with tips and insights that he/she has gleaned over the years through experience. In this way, you will achieve success with greater precision and have little room for failure.
Never assume that owning a business is difficult. The hardest part is to start. Once you start, you have conquered the fear and procrastination that many are still battling with. Nevertheless, with enough information, planning and action, you can grow your business over time.
