Car Talk › Re: 10 Reasons Why You Should Learn To Drive The Manual Car. by uvalued(m): 9:51am On Feb 10, 2017 |
MotoringNigeria: The manual transmission or stick shift as we call it is far back predated and was once the standard style in all vehicles; unfortunately, the rapid advancement in technology threatens to put it to extinction. Automatic transmissions have generally become the choice of the majority, finding a manual transmission in just about any car is like finding a needle in a haystack, but even with the endangerment the manual transmission faces, I don't think it will obliterated anytime soon. Here are 10 reason why you should learn how to drive the manual car;
1) Low Cost Of Maintenance Or Repair.
A manual car like its rival requires continuous maintenance but unlike its rival, its cost of maintenance and repairs is significantly less. If you don't understand, go back to your previous high school and enroll to study demand and supply.
2) Fuel Economy
Cars with manual transmissions always get better fuel economy than cars with automatic. Manual cars have been known to save drivers between 5% and 15% on their fuel costs. The manual car is more lighter and normally comes with more gears than their automatic counterparts, the aftermath is that you’ll get more kilometres out of the petrol you pump in than you would with an automatic.
3) Control
Automatic transmissions are designed to choose the best gear for any situation but they tend to shift to higher gears and waste engine power which doesn’t allow drivers to quickly anticipate an oncoming condition. Manual transmissions give drivers greater control over the vehicle. Am sure most of us if not all have seen Fast n Furious(The movie, 1-7) and was wowed by the way the likes of Vin Diesel, Paul Walker(R.I.P), Lusacris and Tyrese felt totally in control - sorry scratch that, they were in total control and the cars were so submissive like watching Fifty Shades Of Grey. I mean what feeling could possible beat that!!!
4) Power
The transmission of a car either automatic or manual, allows the vehicle to change gears, thereby transferring power from the engine to the drive axle. This it does in the most efficient way by varying the gear ratio. Lower gears are accompanied with increased power and less speed. Higher gears, on the other hand, are accompanied with less power and increased speed and it defines how cars responds for any given situation. An automatic transmission is designed to shift in a way that doesn’t exactly use all of an engine’s power while manual transmissions tend to take advantage of more of an engine’s power thanks to more specific and exact transmission shifts.
5) Theft
If you own a manual car, car theft shouldn't be on your list of worries. With the great ease in driving the automatic transmission has brought with it, today's generation so large in number feel there's no need to learn the manual transmission and as a result there's an higher demand for the automatic transmission than the manual. This has also brought down the rate of manual car theft - you can't go stealing a manual car just because you can drive an automatic transmission. No, it doesn't work that way, best try the other way around.
6) Reduced Distraction
The manual car loves to keep her occupants engaged to avoid unnecessary distractions like staring at other girls(Cars), making phone calls, snap chatting, tweeting or texting. She gives you no choice except if you are to super of a being to keep texting or tweeting while upshifting or downshifting and also stepping on and off the clutch, break or accelerator. The same cannot be said of its rival, the automatic.
7) No borrowing allowed.
Nowadays, we pretty well know that everyone can practically drive an automatic transmission but not just anyone can drive a manual car and yes, its an added advantage for car owners who own a manual car - especially if you have friends who borrow more than they give.
Bad friend: Bro what's up. My chick is coming over today - can I borrow your car to just drive her around. Me: Sure thing, I'm your man. Can you drive manual? Bad friend: Chai, no o Me: Eeyah, looks like you will be hiring a Keke.
Keep and feel the classics
If you are a lover of classic and cool cars - old but gold as I love to call it. It's assumed you already know how to drive a manual transmission, if you don't, well too bad they don't come in automatics.
9) Dead Battery Push Start
This is one of the unique aspects of a manual vehicle that I find thrilling all the time. It seems hilarious that you could bring a dead car back to life but in every sense its just amazing. So, how do you push start a car?
- Start the ignition like you normally do. - Put the gear in neutral. - Get 2 or 3 people to help push the car. - Once your car is in constant motion, press down the clutch and shift to gear 2. - Lift your foot off the clutch and step on the gas/accelerator. Off you go, that wasn't so hard right!
10) Less Expensive
With all the above listed advantages of a manual car over an automatic car, someone is probably thinking of getting one but feels it will leave an indelible insignia on his/her bank accounts - well, that not something you have to worry about. Choosing to buy a manual car over an automatic transmission will literarily save you a $1000 less (Do the conversion yourself). You will also like to know that not all manual cars sell less than their automatic models, examples include BMWs - which is often same price as the automatic, GM vehicles such as the 2013 Buick Regal GS and 2013 Cadillac CTS-V. Furthermore, records have shown that not all automatics came along with their rival during the production process, 67 percent of 2013 model-year cars came only as automatics...what a spoiler!
It takes dedicated time, patience and effort to learn the joys of stick shift driving. Yes, maybe for the first week you'll feel its effects on your joints but once you get used to it - you will become a pro in no time and never want to stop driving.

Career › Re: 6 Management Lessons Everyone Should Know. by uvalued(m): 9:50am On Feb 10, 2017 |
MsDelilah: Lesson 1: A man is getting into the shower just as his wife is finishing up her shower, when the doorbell rings. The wife quickly wraps herself in a towel and runs downstairs. When she opens the door, there stands Bob, the next-door neighbor. Before she says a word, Bob says, 'I'll give you $800 to drop that towel.' After thinking for a moment, the woman drops her towel and stands naked in front of Bob, after a few seconds, Bob hands her $800 and leaves. The woman wraps back up in the towel and goes back upstairs. When she gets to the bathroom, her husband asks, 'Who was that?' 'It was Bob the next door neighbor,' she replies. 'Great,' the husband says, 'did he say anything about the $800 he owes me?'
Moral of the story: If you share critical information pertaining to credit and risk with your shareholders in time, you may be in a position to prevent avoidable exposure.
Lesson 2: A priest offered a Nun a lift. She got in and crossed her legs, forcing her gown to reveal a leg. The priest nearly had an accident. After controlling the car, he stealthily slid his hand up her leg. The nun said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?' The priest removed his hand. But, changing gears, he let his hand slide up her leg again. The nun once again said, 'Father, remember Psalm 129?' The priest apologized 'Sorry sister but the flesh is weak.' Arriving at the convent, the nun sighed heavily and went on her way. On his arrival at the church, the priest rushed to look up Psalm 129. It said, 'Go forth and seek, further up, you will find glory.'
Moral of the story: If you are not well informed in your job, you might miss a great opportunity.
Lesson 3: A sales rep, an administration clerk, and the manager are walking to lunch when they find an antique oil lamp. They rub it and a Genie comes out. The Genie says, 'I'll give each of you just one wish.' 'Me first! Me first!' says the admin clerk. 'I want to be in the Bahamas, driving a speedboat, without a care in the world.' Puff! She's gone. 'Me next! Me next!' says the sales rep. 'I want to be in Hawaii , relaxing on the beach with my personal masseuse, an endless supply of Pina Coladas and the love of my life.'Puff! He's gone.'OK, you're up,' the Genie says to the manager. The manager says, 'I want those two back in the office after lunch.'
Moral of the story:Always let your boss have the first say.
Lesson 4: An eagle was sitting on a tree resting, doing nothing. A small rabbit saw the eagle and asked him, 'Can I also sit like you and do nothing?' The eagle answered: 'Sure, why not.' So, the rabbit sat on the ground below the eagle and rested. All of a sudden, a fox appeared, jumped on the rabbit and ate it.
Moral of the story:To be sitting and doing nothing, you must be sitting very, very high up.
Lesson 5: A turkey was chatting with a bull. 'I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree' sighed the turkey, 'but I haven't got the energy.' 'Well, why don't you nibble on some of my droppings?' replied the bull. They're packed with nutrients.'The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree. The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch. Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree. He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.
Moral of the story:Bull Sh*t might get you to the top, but it won't keep you there..
Lesson 6: A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold the bird froze and fell to the ground into a large field. While he was lying there, a cow came by and dropped some dung on him. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, he began to realize how warm he was.The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate.Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him.
Morals of the story: (1) Not everyone who sh*ts on you is your enemy. (2) Not everyone who gets you out of sh*t is your friend. (3) And when you're in deep sh*t, it's best to keep your mouth shut!

Career › Re: How Do People Survive After Losing Their Jobs? by uvalued(m): 9:41am On Feb 09, 2017 |
ItuExchange: How do people survive financially after quitting their job and pursuing the entrepreneur route of a startup?
I've done it twice. Both times I went into massive personal credit card debt (US $50,000 and US $70,000). Both times the company I founded eventually raised investment capital, and things worked out. Here are the few pieces I've learned about surviving as a bootstrapped entrepreneur after quitting my job:
1. If You Aren't 100% Sure, Don't Even Try to Survive Financially. Get Your Job Back.
Being an entrepreneur is painful... and not the romanticized pain that ends in two hours and gets packaged like a Disney Special. It's a dull, lingering, financially disastrous pain that is only worth it if there is absolutely nothing else you can see yourself doing. If it isn't that black and white for you, get your job back. Now.
2. Plan for At Least 2 Years of Financial Suicide. That's a Bare Minimum.
Most entrepreneurs begin their entrepreneurial journeys with rosy forecasts. If they can just do these four things, well heck, they'll be the next Facebook or at least Instagram. That's the fairy tale anyway. The reality is you'll be probably trudging through financial quicksand for years. So plan for it!
3. Find a Cofounder As Wildly Passionate As You Are. Ideally a Rich One.
When you're lost and alone in the desert with no directions for how to find water... it is easy to let the hallucinations and ramen-inducing vitamin deficiencies take hold. But when you have a cofounder, an advocate, a best friend who needs it as much as you do... that person can keep you sane. If the person is rich, he or she can also take you out to dinner every now and then!
4. It Doesn't Matter if You Once Lived Like a King. You Are Now a Pauper.
Before I took the social entrepreneurial plunge, I was making easy money, driving a nice Mercedes, staying at 4-star New York City hotels, and enjoying life. It took me a few months to realize I was a pauper when I started my first business. The result: I used what could have been 3 years of savings in 5 months. Don't be as stupid as me.
5. If You Hit Zero, Credit Cards Can Be Your Best Friend. But BEWARE.
The only thing scarier for an entrepreneur than losing money every month is losing money you don't have every month. But this is part of the financial suicide referenced earlier. When you've hit zero, 0% interest credit cards (readily available in the US for first 12 months if you have good credit) are your best friend.
** Use with caution: If you aren't idiotically sure things will work out, return to step 1. Ask for your job back.
6. (Final Financial Survival Step): Work On Your Mental Game. It's the Most Valuable Asset You Have. It's More Important Than Money.
Entrepreneurship is oftentimes a war of attrition. Those who can take the most pain and stay in the game the longest are oftentimes the victors (if they are smart and adjusting all the time). The key to staying in the game isn't money. It is knowing the truth about yourself and your team: you are immensely capable and resourceful, and you will find a way. After all, there is no other option!

Properties › Re: Who Should Supervise A Building Project; Architects, Builders Or Engineers by uvalued(m): 9:36am On Feb 09, 2017 |
saydfact: There is an everyday argument on WHO SHOULD SUPERVISE A BUILDING PROJECT; The Architect, Builder or Civil/Structural Engineer?
Well, before we go into details, I'm sure we all agree the Mechanical Engineer shouldn't be responsible for task of ensuring 'Your Design' comes out as expected - conducive and beautiful (Aesthetics). LoL
Lets define the 3 professions we're considering (in alphabetical order)
A. Architect According to the English dictionary:
* Architect [n.]: A person skilled in the art of building; one who understands architecture, or makes it his occupation to form plans and designs of buildings, and to superintend the artificers employed.
Lets further look at the meaning of 'SUPERINTEND':
* Superintend [v. t.]: To have or exercise the charge and oversight of; to oversee with the power of direction; to take care of with authority; to supervise; as, an officer superintends the building of a ship or the construction of a fort.
We'll stop here for now, while we get the definition of B & C from the same dictionary.
B. Builder * Builder [n.]: One who builds; one whose occupation is to build, as a carpenter, a shipwright, or a mason.
this definition in my opinion wasn't fair or deep enough so I looked further down:
* Builder; constructor: someone who contracts for and supervises construction (as of a building) * Homebuilder; home-builder; housebuilder; house-builder: someone who builds houses as a business
This definitions, almost limits the builder to a business man, (that's not my conclusion) - that's what the dictionary thinks. we'll also come back to argue this, while we look at the last definition 'C' below.
C. Civil/Structural Engineer
* Structural: affecting or involved in structure or construction (ex.: the structural details of a house such as beams and joists and rafters; not ornamental elements; structural damage)
* Civil engineer: an engineer trained to design and construct and maintain public works (roads or bridges or harbors etc.)
* Civil engineering: the branch of engineering concerned with the design and construction of such public works as dams or bridges
Lets summarize the 3 definition on here; The first mentioned structures but noted that these does not include ornamental elements eg pop designs, tiling etc while the other two (from civil) were silent about buildings. The first conclusion we can draw from this definition is that the Civil Engineer is solely responsible for supervising structures like bridges, roads, dams and he has no competition in those area.
Verdict: The dictionary thinks the Architect is the more appropriate person to supervise the building BUT WE WOULD NOT CONCLUDE HERE.
LETS LOOK AT WIKI DEFINITIONS NOW:
* An architect is someone who plans, designs, and reviews the construction of buildings. To practice architecture means to provide services in connection with the design of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings, that have as their principal purpose human occupancy or use. Etymologically, architect derives from the Latin architectus, which derives from the Greek (arkhi-, chief + tekton, builder), i.e., chief builder
Like in the dictionary definitions; wiki gives so much power to the Architect calling him 'CHIEF' -
* Structural engineering is mainly a sub-division of civil engineering where structural engineers are trained to understand, predict, and calculate the stability, strength and rigidity of built structures for buildings and non-building structures, to develop designs and integrate their design with that of other designers, and to supervise construction of projects on site.
* Builder may refer to:
- Construction worker who specializes in building work - Carpenter, a skilled craftsman who works with wood - General contractor, that specializes in building work
Off-course wiki didn't rule out the engineer as a supervisor on site - we can only argue that the website seems to have placed him under a 'chief' - perhaps not, AND except we're biased IT IS COMMON KNOWLEDGE that the builder is the least recognized among the three. (No dis-respect meant please)
LETS LOOK AT LOGIC / COMMON REASONING:
Starting with C, B then A.
I'M SURE WE ALL AGREE THAT THE CIVIL/STRUCTURAL ENGINEERS ARE INVOLVED IN DESIGN OF THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS EG COLUMNS, BEAMS AND SLAB - BASICALLY HE DESIGNS & RECOMMEND ON ALL STEEL WORKS....If we all agree on the above, then 'my question is; SHOULD THE STRUCTURAL ENGINEER BE INVOLVED IN ANY BUILDING THAT DOESN'T HAVE HAVE HIS DESIGN INPUT?
Lets support our claims with the Nigeria Approval Process - When seeking approval for a bungalow, all you're required to submit is an Architectural Plan - You would not be required to submit a structural design / calculation sheet until you start going up with a storey on another.
This means; The only person involved in all types of building (emphasis on BUILDING) is the Architect....
WHO UNDERSTANDS THE BUILDING MORE:
A. The person who designed it OR B. The person who recommended what strength is required to make it stand C. The person who only received series of drawings and required to build / supervise it
I'll leave every man to his conclusion here.
ACTUAL PRACTICE:
For those of us working with multi-national company, expatriates or dealing with big organizations have you ever noticed that the PROJECT MANAGERS are always Architects?
This is because of the single rule that Architects are the head of the construction team - I'm yet to come across a Project Managed by an Engineering firm or where the NO1 man on site is the Engineer.
Maybe I've just been on the wrong types of projects - which includes Factories, Warehouses, Mega Stores, Luxury apartment etc.
Could this be a co-incidence?
SO; MY QUESTION STILL IS "WHO SHOULD SUPERVISE A BUILDING PROJECT" well, I'm not ruling out the importance of both the Architect & Engineers especially on very complex structures.

Kill the Entire Town if One Person Worships Another God
Suppose you hear in one of the towns the LORD your God is giving you that some worthless rabble among you have led their fellow citizens astray by encouraging them to worship foreign gods. In such cases, you must examine the facts carefully. If you find it is true and can prove that such a detestable act has occurred among you, you must attack that town and completely destroy all its inhabitants, as well as all the livestock. Then you must pile all the plunder in the middle of the street and burn it. Put the entire town to the torch as a burnt offering to the LORD your God. That town must remain a ruin forever; it may never be rebuilt. Keep none of the plunder that has been set apart for destruction. Then the LORD will turn from his fierce anger and be merciful to you. He will have compassion on you and make you a great nation, just as he solemnly promised your ancestors. “The LORD your God will be merciful only if you obey him and keep all the commands I am giving you today, doing what is pleasing to him.” (Deuteronomy 13:13-19 NLT)
Kill Women Who Are Not Virgins On Their Wedding Night
But if this charge is true (that she wasn’t a virgin on her wedding night), and evidence of the girls virginity is not found, they shall bring the girl to the entrance of her fathers house and there her townsman shall stone her to death, because she committed a crime against Israel by her unchasteness in her father’s house. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst. (Deuteronomy 22:20-21 NAB)
Kill Followers of Other Religions.
1) If your own full brother, or your son or daughter, or your beloved wife, or you intimate friend, entices you secretly to serve other gods, whom you and your fathers have not known, gods of any other nations, near at hand or far away, from one end of the earth to the other: do not yield to him or listen to him, nor look with pity upon him, to spare or shield him, but kill him. Your hand shall be the first raised to. |

SouthernUnite: I was banned by a mod that is deluded by Political correctness that's why I am using another moniker. If the world was so restricted by information we wouldn't be using Nairaland today. People should be given the chance to be exposed and decide if they follow a particular school of thought or not. I am not calling for seccession just a united south something Arewa shouts for daily for their Norther region yet you decide to censor me.
Now to the main point. you are right, the middle belt has been oppressed by the core north |
