The National Disciplinary Committee set up by the leadership of the Bamanga Tukur led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has recommended the expulsion of Alhaji Abubakar Baraje, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Dr. Sam Sam Jaja.

They were suspended on November 11 for what the leadership of the party described as anti -party activities. Baraje was the national chairman of the New PDP while Jaja was his deputy. Oyinlola was the national secretary of the Baraje faction.

He, however, said he remained the national secretary of the ruling party. Oyinlola has been at war with the leadership of the PDP over the latter’s failure to reinstate him as the party’s national secretary.

The Court of Appeal in Abuja had on November 6, ordered the PDP to reinstate him as the national secretary of the party. The party suspended him instead.

Announcing the committee’s recommendation on Wednesday, Deputy Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, pronounced Baraje, Oyinlola and Jaja guilty as charged.

Babatope, who spoke on behalf of the committee however said the case of Senator Ibrahim Kazaure who was also suspended alongside the trio, had been deferred for one month. According to him, Kazaure would still have to appear before the committee on December 10 to clarify certain issues relating to his case.

The committee therefore extended his suspension by 30 days. But in a reaction yesterday, Oyinlola maintained that he remained the national secretary of the PDP and that his expulsion cannot stand.

"Anambra Election crisis: APC leadership to march on INEC, warns police against

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced it will stage a peaceful procession to INEC headquarters in Abuja on Thursday to register its disapproval of the Commission's string of failures in conducting recent elections, including the Delta Central Senatorial District bye-election and the 'inconclusive' Anambra Governorship
poll.

In a statement issued by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party vowed to proceed with the march, despite the illegal move by the police to stop it.

''We are doing this as a patriotic service to the nation because INEC as presently constituted is not capable of organizing a free and fair election again in Nigeria. If the Commission is not checked, its incompetence and conniving acts could plunge the country into chaos of unimaginable proportions,'' it said.

APC explained that ahead of the march, it wrote a letter to the FCT police command to inform it of the planned procession and to request for police escort to forestall a possible hijacking of the march by sponsored hoodlums.

''To our dismay, however, the FCT Police Commissioner did not only turn down our request for police escort but also cheekily advised us to restrict our activity to holding a press conference within our party headquarters to convey our grievances to INEC .

''We reject this very patronizing directive from the partisan FCT
police command and hereby states that in exercise of our
constitutional rights, the leadership of the APC will go ahead with its planned peaceful procession on Thursday, the 28th of November, to express our dissatisfaction with the corruption-ridden INEC and to pass a vote of no confidence on the Commission,'' the party said.

It said the police should not mistake its letter to the security
agency as a request for permission to stage the procession, since the law has said no such permission is required.

''When we wrote this letter, we were quite aware of the ruling of the Appeal Court affirming the decision of Justice Chinyere of the Abuja Federal High Court the in the case of All Nigeria Peoples Party v Inspector General of Police (2006) CHR 181 which said, inter alia: 'If as speculated by law enforcement agents that breach of the peace would
occur, our Criminal Code has made adequate provisions for sanctions against breakdown of law and under so that the requirement of a permit as a conditionality to holding meetings and rallies can no longer be justified in a democratic society.'

''Being mindful of the position of the law on this issue but as a law abiding and a patriotic political party, we nonetheless in our said letter asked the police to provide us with escort during the procession, in line with international best practices. That the police turned down this request speaks volumes about its disdain for the rule
of law.

''We will not be deterred by the blatantly-partisan police, who have missed another great opportunity to affirm their neutrality and respect for the rule of law. We will use this march to prove the point that we shall not condone a Police Command, however partisan or corrupt, abridging our constitutional rights.

''While we shall do all in our powers to make Thursday's procession to INEC as peaceful as possible, Nigerians and the entire world should hold the FCT police command responsible for any breakdown of law and order that may be occasioned by their unprofessional, partisan and illegal action,'' the APC said.

A principal actor in the controversial Anambra governorship election of November 16 has reportedly made sterling revelations to his interrogators in Abuja.

Mr Okeke Chukwujekwu, the electoral officer in charge of Idemili North local government area of Anambra State, currently in police detention over his role in the electoral saga, was said to have told his police investigators that he was “being used and dumped”.

The chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, had, in the heat of the controversies generated by the flawed poll, admitted that the “electoral officer” in Idemili North “messed up” and that he would be handed over to the police for prosecution.

Chukwujekwu was moved to Abuja on Sunday, just as INEC said it was conducting a probe into the deliberate sabotage of the governorship election.

A top official involved in the election confided in LEADERSHIP yesterday that the arrested INEC official had made useful statements even as he was apprehensive that top directors of INEC might be “implicated”.

“The way this whole thing is going, it looks as if many heads will roll in INEC because the young man has made useful statements and if what he said is anything to rely upon, it then means that some big names in that commission might fall with him.

“At first, he was trying to rationalise his action in that local government area when he was verbally quizzed before the intervention of the police; but, after some time, especially at the point of his detention, he started to cooperate but the cooperation is loaded because he has mentioned some top officials of INEC, especially directors and a PDP chieftain, as those who ‘put him in trouble’.

Although the source declined to disclose the identities of those involved, he said “preliminary confessions” point to the fact that the bungled election in most LGAs of the state was “packaged by aggrieved politicians in connivance with top INEC officials both in Abuja and Awka” adding: “It was a well-funded package.”

“All fingers point to some aggrieved politicians and it was a well-funded package that involved quite a lot of people; that is why the man is saying he has been used and dumped,” he said.

Meanwhile, Jega has said all enquiries regarding arrests made in the bungled Anambra election should be referred to the police.

Jega’s chief press secretary, Kayode Idowu, told LEADERSHIP on the telephone that INEC would not comment on the arrested official who allegedly played a key role in the flawed poll.

“One, I cannot say anything on his matter because the police has taken over a larger chunk of the matter; only the police can say something on the role of the man arrested and how far they have gone with their investigation; so you have to contact the police.

“Again, it will be out of place for me to reel out what the commission intends to do. Mind you, INEC is also carrying out its administrative interrogation on his matter,” he said.

INEC does not need court order to cancel tainted poll - APC
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused INEC of being economical with the truth by saying only the courts can order the cancellation of last Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra in which about 1.3 million of the 1.7 million registered voters were unable to exercise their franchise.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday by its interim national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party reminded INEC that it did not wait for a court order to cancel the National Assembly elections in 2011 when it was obvious that many voters across the country could not vote due to the late arrival or non-delivery of voting materials.

‘’In announcing the cancellation of the National Assembly election in 2011, INEC Chairman Attahiru Jega said, among others, that it was to ‘maintain the integrity of the elections and retain effective overall control of the process’,’’ it said.

APC said the situation in Anambra last Saturday was even more serious because, in addition to the fact that voting materials were either late or not delivered at all, most voters were disenfranchised by an INEC official who apparently tampered with the 2011 voters’ register for the state.

‘’Therefore, there are more compelling reasons now to cancel the Anambra governorship election than what led to the cancellation and rescheduling of the National Assembly election in 2011, unless of course INEC is still acting out the script handed to it for the ill-fated election,’’ the party said.

Apologise to Nigerians, HURIWA, TCN tell Jega
In a related development, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) and the Transparency Center Network (TCN) have asked INEC chairman Prof Attahiru Jega to apologise to Nigerians for the apparent failure and administrative flaws that marred the November 16, 2013, governorship poll in Anambra State.

The groups also asked the hierarchy of the electoral body to name, shame and prosecute all the electoral officials that in one way or the other colluded with reactionary political forces to undermine the transparent conduct of the bungled election which was declared inconclusive.

According to the groups, the bulk of blame and responsibility lies with INEC which is constitutionally empowered to conduct free, fair and transparent elections nationally.

The groups stated this in a joint statement signed by the national coordinator of HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, who is also the deputy chief of mission for Transparency Center Network (TCN), an officially accredited election observer to the Anambra election, as well as the national director of media affairs of HURIWA, Miss Zainab Yusuf.

They noted that the failure of INEC in Anambra is an unfortunate foretaste of what may happen in 2015 unless and except comprehensive reforms are executed in INEC by the National Assembly to make it transparent, accountable, effective and efficient.

Though the result of the Anambra State gubernatorial election is still being awaited, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Chris Ngige has called for cancellation of the election.

The Director of Media and Communication of Ngige Campaign Organisation, Chief Charles Amilo accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of conspiring with the ruling party in the state, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to rig the election in favour of the latter.

He alleged that the commission deliberately distributed voters materials late to areas considered as APC’s strong-hold just to short-change the party’s candidate.

today was harvest/thanksgiving service in church. and its supposed to be a time to thank God for His goodness and faithfulness throughout the year. people came with fat offerings and goods like yam, plantain, palm oil, fowl.

but i was not really interested because i know at the end of the service all these goods wld find their way to the pastor's house. and of course, the pastor receives a good salary for his work at the end of every month.

my question;

when we give in Church, whether tithe, offering, thanksgiving etc. are we giving to God or are we giving to support God's work? these are two different things...

Ibrahim Babangida was Nigeria’s ruler for eight years.

A former military President, Ibrahim Babangida, on Monday called for the devolution of powers between the federal, state and local governments in the spirit of true federalism.

Mr. Babangida made the call when the Chairman of Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Elias Mbam, paid him a visit at his residence in Minna.

The former president said that besides proper devolution of powers, there was need for a review of revenue sharing formula in favour of the states and the local government councils. He said that a greater percentage of revenue should go to the state and local governments because their closeness to the masses.

The former military president also canvassed for diversification of the economy from the current mono-source – oil, to other revenue alternatives.

Mr. Babangida commended the commission for carrying out its assignment diligently in spite of the challenges.

Earlier, Mr. Mbam said the visit was part of extensive consultation with all stakeholders before drawing up a new revenue sharing formula.

He noted that the review of the revenue sharing formula was last held during the Babangida regime.

The chairman said that the new revenue sharing formula would be ready by December.

THE TRUTH ABOUT GOVERNMENT’S POSITION ON ASUU STRIKE
*OKONJO-IWEALA IS NOT THE ISSUE

Contrary to some recent media reports, the Federal government has not adopted a take-it-or-leave-it approach in its negotiations with ASUU. Rather, the approach is focused on positive engagement and achieving sustainable solutions to the challenges facing higher education in the country. That is why President Goodluck Jonathan recently appealed to ASUU to respond to government’s positive steps by calling off its strike in the interest of suffering students and parents.

Despite this, for several days now, some elements in ASUU have been distributing pamphlets and flyers with abusive and inflammatory messages against the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in mosques and other places. This is taking academic unionism to a new low and infusing it with unnecessary politics. I am sure majority of ASUU members are not in support of this.

These messages are directed at using falsehood to demonize the Minister as callous and unsympathetic to the plight of students and parents. The major lie being peddled in the pamphlets and flyers is that Dr Okonjo-Iweala has insisted on a “take-it-or-leave-it approach” in the negotiations with ASUU. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Dr Okonjo-Iweala is the daughter of two retired professors and her father is presently a member of ASUU’s Board of Trustees and has been one for a long time. She speaks with her father everyday on the issue so how can be insensitive to issues concerning the sad state of tertiary education in the country? She understands and sympathizes with the plight of both students and lecturers. She wants our children back in school as soon as possible. Remember she is a mother and two of her young relatives are sitting at home due to the strike.

This is why government is working hard, under the leadership of the President, to seek practical and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing higher education in Nigeria. The President has made available N100 billion a year in the first instance to repair hostels, laboratories and classrooms and other facilities. An offer has also been made to ASUU of N30 billion towards their earned allowances. In fact, negotiations have even gone further than this. This is the first time, in years of negotiating with government, that significant sums of money have been put on the table for ASUU and universities on this particular set of issues. The Coordinating Minister is fully part of this.

Against this background, ASUU elements who want the strike to continue should have a heart and rethink their current take-it-or-leave-it approach to negotiation. Government has demonstrated its commitment to improving the university system. And it is even ready to do much more going forward. ASUU should listen to the voice of reason and the yearnings of Nigerians on this issue.

God will end all human suffering when His government starts to rule the world. we had a disagreement on who rules the world today. they said the devil rules, but i had a different opinion ( i will talk more on that later) but one thing amused me...

yeah, he read about the promise of Jesus to the thief by his side on the cross "today, you will be with me in paradise" he said the promise wld be fulfilled in the future. so i asked where Jesus and the thief went to when they died that very day....

so, today, we started studying from their booklet titled "Good news from God". i will read from the book and also from the bible. then they explain.

actually, they r not new to me. i've had a complete course with one of them some years back. but when i came to the point of becoming their member, i told him "no". i'm not leaving my church. so, when this new brother came around, i told him from onset i've completed their course and that i'm not ready to join their church. but he insisted he has something different to share with me. so, i welcomed him in.

i'm a Baptist, however, i admire my brothers in Jehova witnesses. i like their commitment in sharing God's word with people and i welcome them anytime they come around. this afternoon when came back from church, they knocked on my door. i opened and brought them in and we had a study. i thot maybe i should share it here.

Sincere 9gerian: Maybe the president should even massively sack those mostly corrupt and lazy lecturers and dam the consequence. Maybe we should re-build from scratch and any of the old lecturers still interested in working will be employed under a new contractual agreement. The worst that can happen is NLC, TUC and co embarking on solidarity strike.

The best he can do, in my opinion, is to reach an agreement with ASUU to use the money they are asking for to set up industries that would be managed by the universities to generate revenue for them. If 600 billion or 1.5 trillion is used to set up industries that wld generate billions of profit annually, ASUU wont beg for money again.

but the chances are there that if u give them that money, they wld squander it or use it to build infrastructures that wont add to the country's economy.
