Spartacus: Blood and Shag. If you're visually inclined, it makes a good watch. I was a little confused when my 17 year old twin brothers went out to get it for me to watch when I said I hadn't. I told them there's no way in hell, I'd watch it with them and I watched the thing in private. Sans all the blood and all the shagging what you get is not even an accurate description of ancient Greece which they so painstakingly took their time to tell me justified their plenty graphic rendition. Not bad. Not great. And those brothers of mine are still minors and I like them plenty innocent! angry

TV/Movies › Re: Top Ten Movies That Make You Cry by vescucci(m): 10:47pm On Jun 30, 2010
The things that move me to tears sharply differ from Lasisi Nextdoor. I was stifling my tear ducts more than not in John Q. The film was massively opinionated and isn't the best film in the world but that is not my concern. I was concerned with the man John Q and even though I don't have a girlfriend let alone married let alone with kid, I could empathize with the man and I'm not sure I'd have acted differently in his shoes.

Usually it's only just a scene that makes me cry. Some films I remember are

A few scenes in Braveheart
Almost all of John Q apparently
Lucas, I saw this as a kid and I think I might be cheeky about it now
Tofan, an Indian film
A series of Indian films I gotta admit but those were like ten years ago and such things is frankly their domain
A scene in Before Sunset
A lotta other ones I can't remember or I'm too ashamed to say

and most especially an obscure film called Little Princess. I absolutely bawled in that one. I won't be ashamed to do it again.

The Toy Stories are truly magical. One of the very few movies that stay with you. I secretly wish they won't make any more for fear of spoiling things because nowadays movie companies are only interested in indexes and profit margins and not fan base or cult following or classic preservation.

Hey Spikyn. Where ya been? You really are the only one who has the same movie tastes as I. Out of 6 billion people? I have to venture out more undecided

Battlestar Galactica.

Where to start? The beginning.

I started this series with a biased mind. I cherish Star Trek: Voyager so much that I didn't want this Galactica thing to come knock it off. Before I go on, I'll just say Star Trek: Voyager and most of the other Star Treks are better sci-fi series. Far better. For so far into the future, the technology featured in this series is bland and unimaginative. The whole thing seemed so amateurish. I hate the CGI of the centurions. Many times absurd things were accommodated to ensure the story fits or to set a template for later or to just plain prolong the thing. The politics. The press. The prophecies. God! I could talk on and on about my misgivings about these three Ps. But I won't. Suffice to say they were all OVERDONE! OVERKILL! E don too much! Then the raiders and centurions are distinctly dumb in combat. For such a brilliant idea of cyborg fighter aircraft, I'd expect a more effective killing machine as killing should be first nature. You don't think about walking, or how to plot coordinates to guide food into your mouth, do you? I'd expect the raiders to kill with similar efficiency. But not so. The universe is a very very big place and with their FTL drives and all, it is almost ridiculous that there's no extra-terrestial life anywhere. It doesn't have to be intelligent. It just has to be life.

Anybody who reads the above will think I hate the frakking thing. Au contraire. If you call it a sci-fi series as it is supposed to be you'll have a heart attack. But if you just look at it as a futuristic story with what would appear a sci-fi backdrop, you'll survive. This series by some twist of fate presents some of the best acting I've ever seen on a series. Its being a sci-fi series makes this feat even more impressive. The characters are and the spectra of emotion they exhibit are so so RICH. My favorite character is Dr./Vice President/President Gaius Baltar. This guy is phenomenal. Absolutely. Col. Tigh (after he lost his mind along with his eye) was a revelation. Whoever's idea it was to introduce the word frak should be given a Nobel prize. It made a lot of things easier to say. Me, I'm a good boy and I don't swear but I love to see others do it.

The spirituality in the series proves the sayings that 'the more things change, the more they remain the same' and that 'history repeats itself'. The same things really. I enjoyed all the struggles the people had with spirituality but it stopped enchanting me when it seemed the cylons started to have more spiritual clarity than the humans themselves and started to see universal patterns that were invisible to humans. What? It got the makers into a tangle and they were struggling to reconcile all the prophecies and all the parts everyone had to play in it and the best they could come up with was Kara Thrace's time travel and return with a colossal hunch as to the whereabouts of earth. This kinda thing is what spoiled Lost for me. Endless ridiculous twists. Most series that are continuous suffer from this kinda thing. Inflexible flexibility I'll call it.

For the raunchies, there're enough foine women to fantasize about. As there are foine men. I'm just saying. I know people who watch shows just to see people frak

I'm tired and I can't really do a comprehensive analysis but it is one hell of a series. Much under-rated. I think they probably didn't have enough funds to really bring their ideas to life but what a show. What a show. I'm glad I finished it.

Max. Now, you should see Star Trek: Voyager. It was made way earlier than Battlestar Galactica but you wouldn't know.
Christianity Etc › Re: Strangers Or Allies? Paul’s Knowledge Of Jesus by vescucci(m): 11:25pm On May 13, 2010
The other matter I wanted to get your views on is to what extent the persona of Jesus has been coloured by his gradual europeanizing and desemitizing over the centuries that Christianity before the last century could be said to be a white man's religion. I also wanted to read your views on how popular Jewish messianic expectations and later Greco-roman mythology played their parts in distorting most of his message.

Speaking on Jesus' message, I wanted to know where the line is drawn between actual truth and the apostles honest overzealousness. I gave an example of this with the selective and probably dubious quoting of Hosea chapter 11 verse 1 to buttress a point in Matthew chapter 2 that the writer was making. How do we know many other of such 'as it was written' claims are not mere coincidences or fabrications?

I think that's that. Krayola. I'd like to get your contact info. I need your help getting some material in some areas.

I know a couple just like you two. Just love to fight. I wish you both will just settle down and make up. A person is a person and doesn't change. A person's view might. I don't subscribe to any religion anymore but I don't think religions happen by accident. It's the essential truths that I seek to distill minus all the cultural/national/mythical/fictitious regalia they have been clothed with. Your debate is really moot because in my opinion, you both have as much evidence (or lack of it) for your views as the other party. I've really been surprised by some things you both have said here. Half information is dangerous and moreso when you're being implictly haughty about it. Please let's be civil or let's abandon this.

I still think Judaism is exclusive. Would you say it was as easy as pie for a Somali to become a Jew. Forget academic abstractions and rhetorics that will outline the processes but the truth is the Jewish nation has no interest in proselytizing. Learning hebrew? Many many people learn arabic to become muslims. Hebrew is very similar to arabic so it's not like it's easier or harder. I'm not even interested in these problem cuz you've asserted my point which is that Jews right from the onset (and moreso in contemporary times) are first a people (a nation or nationality) and then proponents of a religion

You guys are like a bad couple. Breaking up and making up. I'll try to post the essentials of my questions later. Your piece was good but I knew that already. Aww, big egos.

Uh, so you still don't have nerves Max? Just when I thought I found one.

Two hit combo! You're now very intriguing to me. Krayola has a point in saying it's not Paul's fault that a buncha Catholic thugs roasted people they considered witches. Neither is it his fault his letters were chosen to form majority of the NT. But did he want his teachings to take precedence? Yes sir. If it were left to him, I think he might write the whole 'bible' and tell us that nothing should be added or subtracted.

It's all muddy water. Me, as far as the bible is concerned, I'm of the opinion that you can only tell for sure what is an untruth and can never tell what is true or who said the thing.

This thread just got interesting again. Me, I like arguments. I like to learn though and not just to prove I'm right.

Christianity Etc › Re: Strangers Or Allies? Paul’s Knowledge Of Jesus by vescucci(m): 10:21pm On May 08, 2010
Ok. Sorry Max. You have nerves after all.

Krayola doesn't like Paul. That's a shocker. Paul's either a true apostle or he's not. If you don't like him, it should be because you think he's false cuz if you don't like an apostle you KNOW to be true, I don't think you're a very good Christian then. Which is it Krayola?

I have decided not to say anything of substance here anymore but play part agent provocateur and part devil's advocate. It seems most of us have views. We say them. We say we don't expect anyone to see things our way or at least take our word for it. But we don't mean this cuz we still say what we think. And then, we do not really try to bring about a change of opinion in anyone. Now I'm wondering what is the point of it all cuz nobody has had a eureka moment since o.

I saw 9 expecting Burton's signature. The film was well made and all but I really hated the story and the overall scheme of things. A buncha runt robots with chunks of the soul of a frail genius are somehow supposed to rebuild a ravaged earth infested with savage robots without souls who seem bent on their die and let live disposition

I still wanna review Nine but my review won't be till monday due to some technical difficulties so I might as well forget it since v3 thinks it's deplorable. Spikie intrigued me with a few lines in the film. Oh well.

JK. I actually saw bits and pieces of Armoured. I dunno how they pulled a coup of such a cast. I've never hated a hero so much as the black do gooder

I do not condone killing anyone for many reasons other than as punishment for murder.

Both Romeo and MyJoe have some valid points but I think you both may be wrong about some things. Anyway, I'll just give my two cents.

Human beings are human beings but our races have character. Arabs and Israelis (or Jews if you like) are so alike it's ridiculous. They are a stubborn, malicious, unforgiving, bloody people.
