I'm not any politician's defender but I understand economics and finance. I know that the managers of our economy have been padding things for so many years. Our exchange rate then was not realistic. Do you know that back then people earn money abroad, bring it in by exchanging it at the parallel market, use the naira to buy fx at official rate and transfer out of the country. By this movement £1,000 brought in will go back to the UK at about £1,700. It takes courage and political risk to take some of the decisions that this regime has taken. This is not to say that they don't have their flaws. BAT is very courageous.

NAFDAC made mistakes or maybe they intentionally wanted to hyjack traders goods for whatever reasons.
They are using a good excuse to perpetuate evil at places like Onitsha.

The Onitsha drug market has thousands of shops. Many of those are selling drugs, others are selling other things.
There is a very important need to find fake drugs and arrest those involved on that. Everybody agrees to this including most of the traders.

Problem is that NAFDAC invaded these markets at the wee hours of the night, blocked all entrances to the markets, and started pulling down shops and breaking into peoples shops without the owners of the shops being allowed to come around. How is that right?

Most traders have many millions in cash inside their shops. Most products may have been packed in ways that need explanation for the NAFDAC officials to understand. All that was required was the presence of the traders. If they are found to be selling fakes, they should be arrested and if not, their shops should be opened.

But NAFDAC officials prefer a gangster approach by going into shops, opening shops, taking whatever they want without the owners allowed to be present, when the owners are just a pole away..., that is nothing but an abuse of power!

The greatest mistake that Nigeria will make will be to bring in another regime in 2027. The results of the reforms are beginning to emerge. A reversal will seriously hurt the economy. Imagine going back to multiple exchange rate regime, fixed exchange rate regime, return of petrol subsidy, slow down of efforts to increase crude oil production, reversal of tax policies etc etc. Almost all state governments will be grounded, salaries will be owed, projects abandoned. We will return to the era of using ways and means to fund recurrent expenditure.

We have FUTO in Owerri, ALvan Ikoku Federal university, Owerri, Federal Polytechnic Owerri, Federal College of Lands Owerri, Imo state university Owerri, all federal housing estates to Imo state located in Owerri, all state and federal ministries and paratarals are housed in Owerri. Nothing, absolutely nothing left for any other place in Imo state to develop with.
