Education / Ogun Finally Reopens Schools by viviangist: 5:09am On Sep 08, 2020
The Government of Ogun State has finally reopened schools, five months after they were shut down to prevent community transmission of coronavirus.

The state government said schools should reopen on September 21 for the first term of 2020/2021 session.

In a statement by Kunle Somorin, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Dapo Abiodun, on Monday, it was announced that the reopening of schools is extended to all classes in primary and secondary schools, technical and vocational colleges, and tertiary Institutions of learning.

According to Kunle Somorin, universities, polytechnics and colleges of education are to resume same day, September 21.

However, as part of COVID-19 guidelines, schools hours are staggered for public schools.

DAILY POST reports that pupils in Primary one to three will be in school from 8am to 11am; while those in Primary 4 to 6 will be in classes from 12 noon to 3pm.

For those in secondary schools, the hours are staggered in the same manner among those in junior and senior classes.

According to Somorin, technical and Vocational will operate their normal school hours of 8am to 2pm.

He maintained that Early Child Care Development and Education classes for infants from 3 to 5 years of age will not be resuming in public schools until the next phase of schools reopening.

“Tertiary institutions are allowed to commence reopening from 21 September, 2020 as may be determined by their respective Management,” he said.

Politics / Ondo Election: Buhari Predicts ‘Clear Victory’ For Akeredolu by viviangist: 4:44pm On Sep 04, 2020
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has predicted “easier clear victory” for the governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Akeredolu is seeking re-election on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress in the election scheduled to hold on October 10, 2020.

He has his deputy, Agboola Ajayi of the Zenith Labour Party; and Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party as his main challengers in the election.

But Shehu, in a statement on Friday titled, ‘APC governorship candidate will win in Ondo State fairly, says President Buhari’, quoted the President as saying that Akeredolu’s victory in the forthcoming election will be easier than that of his first term.

The presidential aide said Buhari spoke while presenting the party’s flag to Akeredolu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The statement read, “President Muhammadu Buhari Friday in Abuja urged governing party, All Progressives Congress, to work diligently and ensure fairness in electoral processes, while returning governorship candidate of the party, Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, for second term in office.

“The President, who presented the party’s flag to the candidate at the Presidential Villa, said the reconciliation process in the state branch of the party had provided a solid ground for an easier clear victory for the candidate than he achieved in his first term.

“While assuring Akeredolu of the party’s full support, the President said a peaceful and fair election that reflects the will of the people should be upper most, urging adherence to the regulations of the Independent National Electoral Commission and protocols of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.

“President Buhari noted that the party’s mechanism for resolving differences was most effective, and would be sustained to strengthen relationships and project the objectives of the party as people-focused and development-oriented.

“The APC candidate was presented to the President by the party’s Caretaker Committee Chairman, Mai Mala Buni, who is also the Governor of Yobe State.”

Buni also told State House correspondents at the end of their meeting with Buhari that Akeredolu will win the election because he has proven to be an excellent administrator in his first term.

Politics / DSS, Police, Deny Inviting Don Jazzy, Tiwa Savage For Questioning by viviangist: 2:17pm On Sep 02, 2020
The Department of State Security and the Lagos State Police Command have denied inviting any entertainer for questioning.

Earlier today, a report went viral stating that the DSS and the Lagos State Police Command invited some popular celebrities concerning political statements they made on social media.

Some of the celebrities reportedly quizzed by the law enforcement agencies were music producer, Don Jazzy, and singer Tiwa Savage who were said to have been invited to the Lagos office of the DSS for questioning.

The report also said that they were later summoned alongside singers Yemi Alade and Waje by Zubairu Muazu who is said to be the Lagos State Commissioner of Police.

Muazu is said to have warned the singers to steer clear of political comments so as to avoid the anger of the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

To confirm the veracity of the report, The PUNCH spoke with DSS spokesman, Peter Afunnaya, who refuted it, saying, “We didn’t invite any musician.”

The PUNCH also reached out to the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, for further comments about the alleged invitation of the celebrities by the Lagos State Police Command.

Elkana said that Zubairu Muazu, who is said to have invited the singers, “ceased being CP more than 10 months ago.”

He said, “The present CP is Hakeem Odumosu, who came in November last year.”

Continuing, Elkana said, “Zubairu Muazu has even retired from service; he retired as an AIG.”

When asked to confirm if the celebrities were invited by the Lagos State Police Command, Elkana said, “I’m not aware of any invitation.”

A source in Don Jazzy’s camp who was reached for confirmation said that he was not aware of any DSS invitation.

According to him, “Don Jazzy is free. He is not with the DSS. I am not aware of such an incident.

Don Jazzy also took to Twitter with a video apparently in reaction to the report that he was quizzed by the police.

“What’s the meaning of quiz o?” he tweeted on Wednesday.

Politics / Petrol Price Should Be About N155/litre - Marketers by viviangist: 6:42am On Sep 02, 2020
The pump price of petrol should be closer to N155 per litre, the Chairman of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Mr Adetunji Oyebanji, has said.

Oyebanji, who is the managing director/chief executive officer of 11Plc (formerly Mobil Oil Nigeria Plc), said this on Tuesday on CNBC Africa.

Petrol price was increased by marketers to between N148 and N150/litre in August, as the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency remained silent as regards the guiding retail price for the month.

Following the sharp drop in crude oil prices which led to the reduction in the pump price of petrol in March, the PPPRA had said it would advise the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and oil marketing companies on the monthly guiding retail price at which the product shall be sold across the country.

Oyebanji said the under-recovery of N5.35bn recorded by the NNPC in June had to do with the inventory losses that would have occurred because of the reduction in prices at the time.

He said, “However, going forward, we still note that there is still an element of subsidy because when you look at the prices that were posted for the month of August, for instance, NNPC is still retailing petrol at N145 when really the price should be closer to N155.

“If you look at the template the PPPRA has been using in setting prices, you will find that if you just apply even the official exchange rate and Platts for the month of August, prices at the pump should be significantly higher than where there are today.

“Obviously, something is not clear as to what really is happening. We suspect that there may be some issues to do with how margins are being applied to the various operators and the various subheadings within the template.

“So, we will continue to work with government to try and get clarification on this subject but definitely, it is very clear that there is still an element of subsidy.”

Oyebanji said the marketers would continue to engage the relevant agencies of government, particularly the PPPRA, to get an increase in their margins.

He said, “The margins were changed in 2008; then they were not touched for another eight years, and we are trying to get an improvement of that because that will directly impact our bottom line.

“However, we believe that when subsidies are removed, and you allow for price liberalisation, which means that the market will fix prices at the pump, then that will allow full cost recovery by all the operators, and with that, it means that more investments will be attracted to the industry at all levels of the value chain.

“If that happens, then that means more employment, growing the economy, and ultimately, Nigerian can become a refinery hub for West Africa and Central Africa and earn more foreign exchange.”

Oyebanji urged the government to move beyond subsidy removal and to full liberalisation.

Health / Vivien Otu's Kidnap: Doctors Protest In Calabar - Pictures by viviangist: 3:58pm On Sep 01, 2020
Doctors took to the streets of Calabar on Tuesday to protest against the kidnap of a pediatrician at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Dr Vivien Otu.

She was kidnapped by gunmen on Friday night last week around Marian area of Calabar.

The doctors carried placards with various inscriptions such as ‘Kidnapping is an act of terrorism’, ‘Make Cross River safe again’, ‘Cross River is not a den for kidnappers’, and ‘Let’s stamp out kidnapping’ among others.

They marched through the streets and blocked the Governor’s Office gate after they visited the state House of Assembly where the Speaker, Rt Hon Eteng Williams, assured them of improved security in the state.

Speaking at the Governor’s Office gate, the state Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr Innocent Abang, said, “We have come to present our grievances to the governor because of the incessant kidnap of our colleagues and how we have become an endangered specie in Cross River State. We pay tax in this state and we are protecting lives and saving lives. So, we want to tell the government to please protect our land and give us the privilege to save lives.

“The State Security Adviser, who is standing in for the Governor who is not around, should brief us how far they have gone, to assure us that our colleague is safe and will be released to us today. We don’t want it beyond today. We want Cross River State to be safe from kidnapping. Other states are doing well now. We can also do well.

Addressing the doctors on behalf of the governor, the State Security Adviser South, Ani Esin, said, “We have been working round the clock since this happened and right now I can say that we are on top of this situation. The governor is also aware of it and has given us the marching mandate that nobody sleeps until Mrs Otu is returned to her colleagues.”

The Chairman, Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, Cross River State chapter, Dr. Bassey Nakanda, said, “I am sad, I am heartbroken and depressed. All medical women are heartbroken. Honestly, you need to go to her house and see the children crying, asking after their mother.”

Lagos police accused of releasing hit-and-run bikeman who left man with a torn earlobe

A Twitter user has accused the Lagos state police of releasing a hit-and-run bikeman who left a man with a torn earlobe.

According to @zheun85, the incident occurred at Five Star bus stop and the case was reported at Olosan Police Station.

Though he did not reveal why the bikeman was released, he however disclosed that the family of Damilola (accident victim) are trying to raise the fund for his corrective surgery as there are blood clots in his brain.

He tweeted;

Goodmorning @jidesanwoolu @PoliceNG_CRU @PoliceNG @AcpIshaku On Monday morning,an Okada (that was passing one way) hit one Damilola Ogunsanya at Five Star bus stop. Case was reported at Olosan Police Station, one A.O Idowu was assigned as the I.P.O of the case, due to the nature of the accident, three hospitals rejected the patient due to the severity of the case. Lo & behold, the I.P.O in charge of the case Idowu A.O, not only released the Okada man & his bike but was bold enough to say it in front of the DPO that he has released the bike man

Presently the family of Damilola are trying to raise the fund for his corrective surgery, which must be done A.S.A.P due to the fact that there are blood clots in his brain.. He's at Federal Medical Center,Ebute Metta. The most annoying part of the whole case is that the D.P.O told Damilola family that at the end of the month,he will deduct #20,000 from the salary of Idowu, please, what can that solve out of the over one million naira they are seeking for his corrective surgery?.. I hope justice is done. I pray both the D.P.O & I.P.O are brought to book
