It says HAS SPOKEN. That sounds like a 'done deal'. It makes a clear distinction between the past when he spoke and the present where he has spoken.

The author of Hebrews was not among the apostles yet what he wrote is inspired. Note you have to step outside that verse to support your theory of God not speaking today. And even then you employ imagination by claiming that Jesus spoke through his apostles. Where is that written? You also outrightly deny that God HAD SPOKEN when Hebrews was penned. While I understand English is not your primary language, I can't excuse obtuseness.

My broda, if you want to make a case of God not speaking, try and use relevant verses as opposed to imaginination. There is a place for ramblings and this is not it.

Besides, if Jesus is the Word and I don't doubt He is, then when God spoke in the past, He also spoke by Jesus! You need schooling on organizing your thoughts. Coherence is a precious virtue you would do well to learn.
shdemidemi:
Take it easy tiger!

The bible did not say Jesus had spoken. It says God had spoken by Christ. Christ is the Word God spoke by.

Therefore, everything that represents Christ i.e His message through the mouth and pen of the apostles is what God have said. Did the bible say God will speak more today? No. We must glean from what had been said i.e the scripture and not expect to hear more outside God breathed Word.

It says HAS SPOKEN not IS SPEAKING
shdemidemi:
Hebrews 1

What is the son? the son is the Word.

What is the Word? The Word is all that was documented by those who are referred to as the foundation of the church.

He is not going to speak to you and me outside what the Apostles had documented.

If it helps, those words were spoken LONG before we had New Testament. Following your argument,, believers ought to have rejected Revelation since God spoke to John after He said that He had spoken through Jesus

Like Wallace so succinctly surmised, on one extreme we have continuists who demand that God MUST and on the other, cessationists who swear that God CAN'T
shdemidemi:
We must understand God isn't a reactive God today. The bible never promised me God will speak to me outside His word. I think anyone who hear audible voices must check what they are hearing properly. It just might not be God talking.

Hebrews 1 King James Version (KJV)

1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son,

Hebrews 1 Amplified Bible (AMP)
1 In many separate revelations [[a]each of which set forth a portion of the Truth] and in different ways God spoke of old to [our] forefathers in and by the prophets,
2 [But] in [b]the last of these days He has spoken to us in [the person of a] Son,

God spoke, the bible never said He will speak. Many feel the Word isn't enough so they crave for the supernatural, another move of the spirit, another voice to authenticate their beliefs. I have no confidence whatsoever in such people.

I must acknowledge your submission to scripture here. It is a rare occurrence on nairaland. Respect.
I pray you too revere scriptures

Back to the matter.. It is not my imagination but a principle common to anyone God used for His work. It was never a rosy path for anyone, it was a service that required pain to the flesh and a subsequent growth to the spirit.

Most but a few Christians today abhor pain to their flesh so the prosperity, health and wealth gospel sounds better and palatable to them. The true word of God isn't so pleasant so it is rejected by many who love self.
Serving God like any other vocation is no bliss. That's a fact.
What you are denying or ignoring is that PAIN and MISERY is not the ONLY way God reveals Himself to us. Joy too, pleasure as well. Jesus never called any of his apostles out of any personal tragedies. If you can only relate to God out of crisis, you have a long way to go. WinsomeX:

What is at stake here is the Sufficiency of Scriptures, a doctrine taught by scriptures and emphasised by the reformers, for which majority were cessationist. It is a doctrine that Charismatics do not believe in neither do they teach.
My point in the last paragraph you are referring to is that if Paul warned against addidng to scriptures; if Jude encouraged orthodoxy; if John in Revelation speaks against adding to the revealed documented text of scriptures, then scriptures are sufficient and any other thus saith the Lord is not scripture, it has no authority. It doesn't mean God cannot speak to an individual in whichever way he pleases, it is just that what is said not prophesy bc prophetic revelation of God is complete and needs no additions. Whatever else is revealed must be seen as illuminated scriptures and thus has scriptural foundation.
Winsomex, is this statement factual, that charismatics don't believe in sufficiency of scriptures?
This is deliberate mischaracterization by Cessationists on Charismatics. I once said that the main purpose of prophecy is not recording the scriptures. This is why we have one too many prophets whose work is undocumented. If whenever God speaks to man scriptures are supposed to be added and if we believe that since He is no longer adding to scriptures, He is not speaking to individuals, we MUST aks how comes that only a tiny fraction of the prophetic is preserved in the 66 books.
God has in the past (biblical times) and He does speak WITHOUT neither contradicting nor adding to the canon.

As to human weaknesses influencing revelation, I cannot find any readily but remember how Agabus prophesy was interpreted to mean Paul was not to go to Jerusalem when the meant was a prophetic word to prepare Paul for adversity? Or when John found himself worshipping an angel bc of revelation. These are examples of human idiosyncrasies influencing the prophetic word and to guard this the bible is the sufficient word while any other has no authority.
Very true

I think the cessationists made a valid point by saying scripture has only two griuping for prophets: true or false. Nothing in between. A true prophet words will be orthodox, it will come from a life of holiness and it will always come to pass. Anything short of these three renders the man a false prophet; not a wrong proohet or a disobedient prophet but a false prophet under God's judgement.
Agreed. may be I should ask both of you to tell me what you make of this prophecy. Is it a mistake of an outright fraud?
https://www.nairaland.com/2002872/here-prophet-claiming-malachi-4s#28310356

Maybe I should ask you for the scripture that says a private can be a public one. Scriptures is God's public statement to the world. That's the Christian statement too. However, the just shall live by faith. Those that are sons shall be led by the Spirit. Any truly led Christian knows that God's word to him is private and meant for him. If actions are based on such revelation, he takes those action in faith and not bc he is 100% sure it is God leading him. It will be wrong for him to publish to the public what he is not sure of. If he wishes to publish anything, he should publish the Sure word of prophecy. That’s my point.
I partly agree. What makes you think that your preaching is the true word of God? At this rate nobody should ever share a doctrine, they may be wrong. If God gave you a word and you are convinced of the same the same way you are convinced of your faith in the resurrected Lord, speak it.

Do remember what led Peter to say this. He was recounting the events of the Transfiguration. God had spoken to them there. They had seen visions, etc. But he tells us that the scriptures are the Sure Word. Peter is telling us that the written text are Sure; so called visions, revelation and prophecies are not sure. Don't base your life on them. Base it on what is written. To insinuate that there other sure word is to say what scriptures is not saying and to establish a basison which heresies will thrive.
I think Peter's words taken out of context may backfire. There are clear doctrines taught in the NT that you can't find in the OT. If Peter was referring to sure word means sticking to scriptures and not revelations, then on what basis would the first century church follow the apostles like say Paul teaching that the dead in Christ rise first, followed by the living?

But I do agree with you that scriptures is the Most important yardstick for testing any revelation. But it is not the only one. If I said that the Lord showed me an earthquake over the eastern part of Lagos, how do you test that from scriptures? You don't have no Lagos there. You would test my character first, previous prophecies for accuracy, my doctrine and so forth

You are full of Wisdom bro, keep preaching Christ

nlMediator:
Your possibilities again do not reflect the complete picture. The Bible says if you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. Not that you were never of God or could never be used by him.

And good circumstances can draw people to God as well as draw them away from Him. You can't focus only on one side and be faithful to scripture. When Peter was rescued from prison, he knew God had rescued him and he was able to serve God more as a result. If he had stayed in prison a few years longer, you'd say God kept him there to teach him some valuable lessons. But when God rescues him, you do not seem to see the lesson for him as well.

So Abram left AFTER his dad checked out at 205 years and he was 75 years then (Gen 12:4) meaning he was born when Terah was 130 years.
My friend you seem to be far from scripture every time. If a difficult time draw your friend away from scripture, then there are two possibilities-

2)He probably isn't a tool God wants to use for His work.

Perseverance and endurance in hope of the day of the Lord are tenets of spirituality.

My broda you are off.

Gen 11:26 (KJV)
And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.

So Terah died when Abraham was 135 years but Abraham circumcised when he was 99 years
Gen 17:24 (KJV)
And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin

35 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin

But God had called him out of his father's house way back in 12:1. Subtract Ishmael's age of 13 and Abram was already following God at least over 50 years before Terah died. Long and short is your claims are bogus.

Difficult times do not necessarily draw people to God, I know one too many Christians who lost their faith over difficult times and I know many non believers who just can't find God in difficulties. The idea that discomfort and pain draws men to God is the whole reason we had Francis of Assisi ascetism. They think material distracts from worship so they rid of it as as much and beyond the practicable.

When God delivered Israel out of bondage, He told them to never forget that it is He who gave them all that not their hard work. But he still prospered them. That's the attitude becoming a Christian, acknowledging God's providence not despising it like Francis

Tunnel vision. Whatever Mark is talking about is Pentecost and is what Paul expounds on in Corinthians and Ephesians else I will start asking where it is recorded that ANY disciple picked a scorpion

Nobody has 'absolute power' now or in the first century church. Did anyone claim to have such? Please bloviate in their direction

Why can't I visit morgue, the same reasons no apostle raised James or Jesus John the Baptist

shdemidemi:
Were we talking about prophecy here? we were talking healing and wonders according to-

Mark 16

15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover

There was death and disease because the Apostles were empowered but not with absolute power. The Holy Spirit was the enforcer of the wonders, they were mere tools used to authenticate the power of God. However, no single man has been able to reproduce the sort of wonders the book of Acts recorded till date.

Is there a problem?

Why do we hear more claims than the actual wonder?

Why are the wonders we hear about today restricted to the four walls of the set of people making such claims?

Elijah was empowered not with absolute power hence why he ran away from Jezebel. So I am saying the apostles only latched on to the Spirit of God and not by their own desire.

As for you, tell me what is stopping you from visiting any hospital or morgue?

Any Angels you see humans saw in the scriptures, those Angels materialized human bodies.

Flesh and body does not inhabit heaven. The bodies you see in heaven are spirit bodies. This is invisible to humans.

Agabus was not an apostle yet he was a prophet. If the gifts were reserved for the 12, nobody else could have exercised them. In the upper room we had 120 believers. ALL of them received the baptism.

There was death and disease even among the first century church. Yet that's the period you claim the spiritual gifts operated in. Why should there be a difference now?

shdemidemi:
Was Paul an Apostle? Was Philip an Apostle? Check your bible properly before posting anything.

Name one member of the congregation in church gathering that healed or wrought miracle in the whole of the bible.

Moot point. Angels have spiritual bodies and some of records we have of them in the scriptures they have physical bodies. Spiritual is not necessarily synonymous with invisible/intangible. But most importantly, the resurrection body is Powerful,Glorious,Incorruptible,Immortal and Spiritual. In fact flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom. So a bleeding resurrected body is a contradiction
JMAN05:
That verse also showed he was raised in a spirit body. The body you saw is thus materialized.
Christianity Etc › Re: N'landers, Who Is Melchizedek As Described In Hebrew 7vs1-3? by vooks:
Hebrews 9:7 (KJV) But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:

12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us

Holy Spirit is very clear. High priests entered into the holy of holies NOT WITHOUT BLOOD or ALWAYS WITH BLOOD.
But Jesus Christ the head and the Body enter BY the blood.

The reason that verse does not say 'He did not enter WITH the blood of the Bulls and goats' but 'He did not enter BY the blood of the Bulls and goats' is because it is talking of heaven where even if Jesus was to offer Bulls and goats, blood would not be admitted.

Jesus ascended back to heaven a High Priest with the merits of his sacrifice. This is the meaning of entering by his own blood

We also don't approach God with vials of blood but by the merits of his sacrifice. There is an artificial dichotomy invented distinguishing Jesus blood from his sacrifice. His shed blood is his sacrificial death and vice versa.

I did a simple study of various translations of Heb 9:12. Here they are;

Revised Standard Version is a good example of this inconsistency.

The key Greek word is dia which means BY
https://www.teknia.com/greek-dictionary/dia

διά (dia)
Strong: G1223
GK: G1328
(1) gen., through, used of place or medium, Mt. 7:13; Lk. 6:1; 2 Cor. 11:33; through, of time, during, in the course of, Heb. 2:15; Acts 5:19; through, of immediate agency, causation, instrumentality, by means of, by, Jn. 1:3; Acts 3:18; of means or manner, through, by, with, Lk. 8:4; 2 Cor. 5:7; 8:8; of state or condition, in a state of, Rom. 4:11; (2) acc., used of causation which is not direct and immediate in the production of a result, on account of, because of, for the sake of, with a view to, Mk. 2:27; Jn. 1:31; rarely, through, while subject to a state of untoward circumstances, Gal. 4:13

I have shared all there is on blood in heaven theories. It is based on a faulty understanding of atonement and an attempt to match Mosaic shadows with the realities 'verbatim'. The analogies break at some point. You have to question this dubious theory which hit Christianity for the FIRST time in the 1860s. You wonder where Holy Spirit was for all these 1800 years to hide such a doctrine from the church.

Where are the injuries in this verse?

[b]1 Cor 15:35 (KJV)
35 But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? 36 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die: 37 And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain: 38 But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body.
39 All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds.
40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.
42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: 43 It is sown in dishonour; it is raised in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: 44 It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

51Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory[/b]

This is about the longest quotation I have made on NL. Jesus is the firstborn from among the dead in that he rose up in Incorruption ,Glory,Power, and Immortality unlike Lazarus. If in this state he can proceed to shed more blood in heaven, then he was just a revived corpse. Yes I know he ate fish and honey after resurrection, but this was a man they barely recognized.

He had the marks from the beating and crucifixion and piercing but don't you for a second imagine he had injuries. They pierced his side, his heart probably. Else you will say he rose up bleeding

I agree you mention doctrine and they dissociate. But some arguments can be knocked down. For instance, how could Jesus die if he was God? Are angels born? Who was the mother of Gabriel?
paulGrundy:
If after questioning your JW friend, he now admits the the governing body makes mistakes then you can now talk about watchtower scandal or hypocrisy. But then don't always expect 100% results why because JWs most times after realizing the truth about the "truth" still grasp with fear of armaggedon even though they now know its irrational. Most JWs are aware of the deception in their history and doctrine but yet they still stick to it because of fear and guilt. It cause them to be overly aggressive towards the slightest hint of criticisms geared towards the society,I understand why CANTICLES/BERNIMORE is aggressive towards me .

The holyspirit is the only person that is 100% succesful. There is something about a personal ecounter with the spirit that changes a man. It changed paul from the most ardent persecutor of the church to one of the greatest apostles of the church. A slight touch of the spirit can not only knock down the heavy scales of indoctrination,it can also make the guilt and fear miraculously disappear. smiley

don't ever under-estimate the emotional trauma a JW is going through when coming to terms with watchtower hypocrisy. There was a time I was persistently contemplating suicide, but Jesus saved me.

You cannot make the holyspirit touch a mans heart, but you can create a room for that to happen, through persistent prayers and a ministration of the word of faith.

I once pinned a JW on the New World Translation. Why it and not any other. They said the translators were highly educated. I said the same could be said of others. They claimed they were also 'inspired'. I asked how they knew that. End of discussion

Keep on the good work sir

paulGrundy:
I understand the point you are passing across. First of all argueing doctrine with a witness is a red flag that should be avoided, its like pouring water into a basket. JW's are a highly controlled and regulated sect with the tools of manipulative propaganda. They have a theoritical school were witnesses are trained on how to answer questions posed to them during their preaching work with cut and join verses of the scripture. Hence discussions centerd on doctrine should be avoid. Try asking them questions on the legitmacy of the governing body to dispense accurate truth. Question them on the why they think the watchtower is the true religion, and the historical accuracy of their doctrines and predictions.make sure your facts and evidence are intact, but please don't refer them to an 'apostate' website, or a website that criticises JW's. It will shock you when they do not provide rational answers to this questions, because they were not indoctrinated in that aspect (if you want sample of these questions, I can help you with them). High control groups use fear and guilt to recruit and maintain members. Make them see that their views are based on mere sentiments, not the truth. Its not going to be easy, but then its one step at a time. but then be very careful! Because you could be branded as an apostate if you are over-negative about the society, or you are not patient with them thereby risking being shunned by family or friends. The watchtower instructs her members to ignore former members or those who constantly criticisize them and brand them as apostates. The best way to do this is to avoid questions based on watchtower scandals and hypocrisy.

I understand how it feels to be indoctrinated I remember during my jobseeking days, one time while preparing for a panel interview, I cramed a whole lot of stuffs from job interview questions website, I got to the venue excited thinking I knew the whole world and that others knew nothing. Just 2 applied questions I was asked which was even within the scope of what I crammed, got me confused, it was then I realized I didn't understand what I crammed. I crammed the material because I felt the questions in its context would be lifted word for word as promised by the author of the site. I got carried away by the claims of experiences the site's administrator said he had, but then I now realized I was wrong! My trust was based on lies! Deception! Misinformation! Misquotes and manipulative propaganda. That's just how to handle jw's. It very painful to realize that all these years you were decieved, mine took me a long time to realize. That's why am taking to the internet to make new recruits and non-members see the other side of the watchtower that has been covered up, the history that the society tried so hard to edit. The false predictions she tried so hard to rationalize away, so that they would know what they are in for.

Sorry, please ignore my question.
Ephesians 4:11 (KJV)
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ

We don't have women apostles in the Bible. Do we have prophets, pastors, evangelists and teachers?

shdemidemi:
I don't know what you mean by higher.

So which is higher? Prophecy or Pastoring?
shdemidemi:
Bro how did we get here?

A pastor is a shepherd who guide and feed the flock.

A prophecy signifies speaking the mind and counsel of God.

A pastor must be able to speak the word of prophecy. We have no better word of prophecy than the gospel of Christ, do we?

Thank you for your response.
Between pastor img and prophecy, which is the higher gift?

shdemidemi:
yes.

there is no excuse to disregard church instruction.

Is this applicable for you?

1 Cor 11:6-9 (ESV)
6 For if a wife will not cover her head, then she should cut her hair short. But since it is disgraceful for a wife to cut off her hair or shave her head, let her cover her head. 7 For a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God, but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. 9 Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.

shdemidemi:
Did Paul say anyone?

Like I said before, Paul was more concerned about how women are known for their charitable work in the church. They should not dress to distract others. They should be virtuous and known for their modesty. The church is not a social gathering, it is a place for sobriety, service and worship of our maker.

I know how they reason having interacted with them. I just wondered what else somebody with years of insider experience would put it to good use.
Thanks for your labor of love right here on NL

It seems you do not fully understand how a JW reasons scriptural and view members of other religion. Reaching out to them would result to a spiritual lawn tennis with you guys lobbing scriptures at each other. Except the scales of indoctrination falls off their eyes, then you can now reach out to them.

mbaemeka:
Hebrews 9:12 KJV

Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
That verse my friend tells me BY not WITH His own blood.
We too, can enter the Holy of Holies BY not WITH the blood

Hebrews 10:19-20 King James Version (KJV)
19 Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus,
20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;

It means we access God through the sacrifice of Christ not carrying vials of his blood to heaven. Actually, it is interesting that we do that while still here on NL

There is a song I really love by Paul Wilbur from this verse

Please think through these things yourself too by praying about it. Will a glorified body have injuries? Why did Christs body maintain the injuries?
Thanks bro. Know that I take your calls to prayer very seriously because I perceive you are a man of faith. BTW, am still waiting for my Space Gray iPhone 6+ 64GB. keep praying with me cool
Jesus had NO injuries whatsoever upon resurrection.
