If you can't read Shakespeare's books and understand clearly, KJV Bible is not for you. Even some senior pastors avoid it.
First, find a Bible version with easier English, or get one in your mother's tongue (modern translation, not old). So you can see the true meanings of what you're reading.

This two verses are saying the same thing. The Holy Spirit is the source of all the goodies of God. The Holy Spirit can give you good things, while not dwelling in you. The bone of contention is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit upon all flesh who believe. The qualification is believing only. Your asking cannot leave the earth, talk less of God hearing and answering.

Your contradiction is in bold.
If you ask you will receive (Like 11:13). The apostles, first people to receive the Holy Spirit were in constant prayers for several days (Acts 1-2), they kept asking as Jesus has taught them. Read that Luke 11, but start from verse 5 through to 13. You'll see that the original context Jesus gave on "ask and you shall be given" was about the Holy Ghost.
I didn't say that is the only way to receive the Holy Spirit, but A VALID WAY if you haven't received yet as a Christian. Some received by hearing (Acts 10:44), some by laying of hands (Acts 8;17).


I strongly suggest you keep an easier bible version with you while you study. KJV is tricky for most people.

The bone of contention here is not prophesying or speaking in tongues or any outward miracle. You are the one making it about it. My point is that those that have the Holy Spirit knows they have Him and those who don't know they have Him, does not have Him.

But for those doubting, Jesus said your child won't ask you for fish and you'd give snake. Your child won't ask for egg and you'd give them scorpion. How much more will our dear Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him. (Luke 11:11) If you're a Christian and you ask God for the Holy Spirit, You will receive. Believe in your heart that God has given you. You might not feel anything or hear any voice, or speak in tongues, or see visions. The manifestions will come in sooner or later, when you learn to quiet your mind and pay attention to your heart.

Though he received his sight back, the Bible did not state that he knew at that moment, or there were any signs. Getting healed is a different thing. The only thing we're sure of is that, several days after that, he knew.

Thanks for the contribution...i very much appreciate it but its just that this was a major topic of contention in our Tuesday bible study at one of the parishes of The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) here in South Africa and we never really arrived at a concrete conclusion due to time constraint and i'm also sure so many people seek answers to this question worldwide.

Permit me to expand my point then.

How did we become slaves to sin?
Because Adam and Eve ate the tree of knowledge, knowing some things are good (obedience) and some things are bad (sin).
Now Paul said in Romans 7:7 that he became slave to sin through the knowledge of the law - knowing some things are good (obedience) and some things are bad (sin).
That is why "the law made nothing perfect" (Hebrews 7:19). It gives you the knowledge of sin. Therefore the more you know about sin, the more you become its slave, because the flesh is always attracted to sin.

Ironically, what we usually spend most of our learning time on in church is trying to know more about sin, instead of more about Jesus (who took away our sins), and the Holy Spirit (who drives us towards righteousness). This is why majority of us are far from perfection. Our priorities are misplaced.
We have no business discussing sin - it's like trying to ressurect the old man (nature) that died with Jesus.
But we should focus on how to recognize the voice of the Holy Spirit and walk our daily lives with Him, our lives would be much better.

A person does not need to accept one or the other. When it comes to many things, it's okay to say "i don't know".

Just because I don't know something, doesn't mean i have to accept a belief about it. I can say i don't know, and that's fine.

My rejection of a god/gods does not come from my belief in an alternate theory or story. It comes from lack of evidence of said god/gods.

If something lacks credible evidence, I'm not inclined to believe it, regardless of whether or not there's an alternative theory.

Also i feel like i should point out that the big bang theory does not state that the universe randomly came from nothing. That's also another grave misconception about it.

Why do we have 40,000 denominations?
It's because people have decided to follow the doctrines of men, rather than the teachings of the Holy Spirit. Every denomination is one man (or small group) interpreting scriptures based on their own personal circumstances or interests - even JW.
Was it not certain people in the past that came up with your doctrines? Did they not say they read the scriptures and we're taught by divine inspiration? How come you're told now that they must teach you?

* This is the man who ordered annulment of the elections that was deemed the most free and fair ever in this country till date.
* The military dictator who spent 8 years (two presidential terms) without setting up constituted civilian rule. Until there was chaos and he was forced to "step aside".
* The man whose IMF inspired SAP policies plunged the country's economy into all time low at that time. Naira plunged from ₦1.70 to ₦22 against US Dollars.
* The man who made corruption an institutional thing, and caused it to be Nigerians' default settings.
* During his tenure 103 (or so) soldiers were overloaded into an aircraft that only had capacity for less than 50. It crashed on takeoff around 7pm, nosedived into a swamp. The teaching Jesus is talking about has three major goals:
•Teaching them about Jehovah the God of Abraham, God of Isaac and God of Jacob (Israel) His purposes and how He has been working using several humans in the past to achieve it.
•Teaching them about the promised Messiah (Christ) his role in the salvation of mankind and how the sacred secrets of God's purposes were made known through Christ Jesus the only begotten Son of God.
•Teaching them about the way God makes use of His active force (Holy Spirit) as His servants are moved by this force to continue doing His will despite their flaws as imperfect humans.

The Holy Ghost will not sneak into your heart. He would come in when you open your heart. But because many think they must speak in tongues or prophesy immediately, they mistake His identity with "inspiration". They fail to recognize Him.

The scriptures never said Paul spoke in tongues the day he received the Holy Spirit. Go confirm. Teachers assumed it. But he said later that he does speak in tongues. It doesn't mean it was from the first day.

According to the Bible Jesus sent some out to PREACH and TEACH others {Matthew 28:19-20} Paul emphasized the need for some to TEACH others {Hebrews 13:7} all first century Christians were obedient to the TEACHINGS of a small group! Act 2:42

Teaching others in the context of Matthew 28:19-20. Those others are people who were yet to hear about Jesus, or have not yet received Him.

Mind the context.
That was a period in time when there was no bible and the old testament scriptures that existed were only available on Jewish scholars. And no known new testament books. There was no way to read anything on your own, in your house. So people needed to be taught the word of God by mouth.
Jesus said the Holy Spirit will guide you into ALL TRUTH (John 16:13). That is, every truth of God's word.
1 John 2:27 says you don't need any man to teach you because you have the "Charisma" of the Holy Spirit. Every Christian must get to that point.
Hebrews 5:12-14 chides those who still needed to be taught to grow up from being fed milk to become adults who eat meat. We must transform from being students into teachers.
So when we are in church, it should be a meeting of teachers, sharing knowledge, not a lecture hall. Except for those who just got reborn - And if we teach those correctly, they would also sit with other teachers quickly. In fact, in a few days or weeks, a new convert should be able to start discussing some spiritual insights.

From these it's clear that it's not Jesus's intention for a Christian to be a learning student of other people, at least not for long!

Just to avoid distractions. Simple.

When scripts, with missing parts, are translated thousands of years after they were written, in languages no one truly understands again, by people who probably have their own personal views, authorized by rulers who probably have their own political agenda.

But despite all these, you cannot say the books were not divinely inspired.
The main problem is forming doctrines on information you're not certain of, where misinterpretation of a single word can change the true meaning of a 100 other words.
Instead of following the doctrines of men, follow the Holy Spirit, get a concordance and check the origin of the words, not a commentary that is greatly influenced by the doctrines of the commentators. Then you will be truly reborn.

The Holy Ghost is not a compelling spirit. No gragra. He represents Jesus's virtues - including humility, patience, and wisdom.
The fruits of the Spirit that Paul asked us to focus on - those are the virtues the Holy Spirit brings into your life.

Yes, people receive the Holy Spirit and don't know. Because they've been erroneously told they have to speak in tongues at that moment. Or that after they get born again, they should get baptized, start living "holy" life, fast and pray before they receive. That quiet voice is in their hearts, gradually reforming them. But they don't recognise it.

But the real advice to any Christian is in this:
Stop thinking about sin or what is it or not, it only gives it more power.
Make the Holy Ghost your companion, He will guide your daily life such that you don't fall into sin or stay in it.

Sin is one or combination of any of these:
* Harm to oneself
* Harm to others
* Harm to God

If gambling is harming you, your family or the Holy Spirit advised you to stop, then it becomes sin.

To say gambling is sin absolutely, then you should also seriously consider Forex trading and stock market as sins. They all involve predictions based on historical information and permutations.
