dralemania: Please I need clarification about Health insurance. I'm coming to Calgary with my spouse for a master program. I noticed my health insurance has been included in my tuition fee by my school but then I'm concerned about what to do with respect to my spouse's. Please can someone help explain how to go about this and if there is any recommendation as to insurance package to use. THANKS Health Care Coverage: AHCIP (Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan) If you are an international student with a family and you plan to reside in Alberta for more than 12 months with a valid study permit, your family members (your spouse and children) may be eligible to apply for AHCIP after they arrive. https://www.ualberta.ca/international/international-student-services/prepare-for-ualberta/bringing-family/family-health-care.htmlIf your journey falls on any of my days off, I can come pick you at the airport for free. |

Fizzywah: On the flip side too, men have stories to tell. My candid advice is as married couples whatever differences you have back home, please and please settle them thoroughly before coming here. A few words:
1. For the men, start getting used to doing domestic chores. No maid / house help here. I bathe my kids, get them ready for school when madam has to go to work early in the morning. She picks them up alternatively. Ego will ruin you ( both man and woman). Leave it behind.
2. Women will quickly learn a lot of laws were made here to defend them. Alternatively those same laws easily tear down marriages and it's not just African ones, a lot of Immigrants see their marriages hitting the rocks soon after coming here.
3. Some Ladies and NOT all please, usually love the idea of the benefits of living here in Canada, but hate the responsibilities that come with it. They still prefer the largess of living in Naija and not having to contribute towards getting things done financially. Why you may ask? Everyone is treated equally here. There is no problem in adopting our African values here if you and your spouse agree. But if the man cleans, cooks, etc then the lady should also contribute in her own way. While this isn't a standard, it might be seen as the sensible thing to do. This is often a slippery topic to discuss but trust me, settle yourselves, and have a written upon and agreed-upon code of conduct before you arrive.
4. Do not have arguments in front of your kids. My 5-year-old possesses a vocabulary to what I could muster at that age as over here they are taught to think independently and express themselves very well.
5. Do not punish yourselves when you have arguments. The police here will help you on the fast track of regrets. Of course, if there is a fear of harm, then please walk away.
6. Just how folks get marriage counseling before marriage, coming to Canada deserves its own session for families coming here. It baffles me when they just show up without any plan on how to Navigate this country.
7. I am still learning and have had to learn some of these lessons the hard way. Mostly by the experience of others and a few times personally.
8. This last one is hard for me to say. Most ladies come here on revenge missions and sadly it's due to some sort of perceived abuse from back home. You see, over here anyone is free to do as they want and if you're the controlling type you'll be in for a big surprise.
Overall sha, use your tongue and count your teeth. Have a solid plan. Repair your marriage. Ask how things are over here. Assume very little. You are a wise man. God bless you. |

Onlineise: Stay away from NE, to put it in 9ja way for you, my wife once drove to Surulere to make her hair, parked her car outside, came back and two side mirrors were gone...if you can relate to that then you relate to NE.
SW-NW-SE in that order. Haba! That's an unfair exaggeration. These places are not as bad as that. I lived in forest lawn for 2 years and never experienced any incident. If you maintain your lane, you will not have anything to worry about. |

Ambidextrause: Hello,
Is there a way to find any info about when the next round will be in Calgary? No info of such nature on their website currently. They just concluded one batch in December. I think they do at least twice a year. I usually get notification whenever they are coming. I will drop info here when next i get info. Alternately, keep checking the website and facebook page from time to time. You will sure get the required info. |

Good people,
I booked a flight for someone in naija and paid with my credit card, and BA has a clause on their website that if the payer is not among the travelling party then the credit card should be produced at the booking office before the traveller can be allowed to fly. How do I resolve this? Do I have to write a letter to BA or do I scan my Credit card and send to the traveller?
Anyone encountered such before?
Thanks in advance |

I am not sure carrying yam is what the risk. I had a funny experience when I bought a talking drum. The stop and check in secondary is not a pleasant experience especially when you are on a long flight... |

Tojued: Good day everyone.
Please those in Calgary / with knowledge of Calgary.
The North East has a bad reputation, but I believe there are some neighborhoods there that are relatively safe, especially within context of raising children. Please can we share experiences of such neighborhoods?
Abi North East na total no-go area? Every neighbourhood has its own issues but I think the NE is not as bad as it is been painted. If you go about your daily activities and you don't go beyond your boundaries, you are fine. I lived in the dreaded Forest Lawn SE for a few years and never experienced anything negative. |

eddycross: Well, we brought in dried snails, but we did not bring the meat (we actually planned to bring dried goat meat but decided against it, in case it is confiscated). However, if we did, we would have passed through ...but who knows, some other customs personnel may not be too lenient to let "you" go without a search. Last year, my kilishi and talking drum were confiscated in YYC. Meat and its products are usually not allowed except on rare occasions when you are fortunate to escape customs. In my case, I was almost through until one small dog sniffed my luggage. |
