Great story! Great writer!! |
Appendicitis is a condition in which the appendix becomes swollen, inflamed, and filled with pus. The appendix is a small pouch shaped like a small finger. It is on the right side of the abdomen, connected to the colon. Experts are not sure what the appendix is for. Charles Darwin wondered whether it might have been an organ our ancestors used to digest plants. Recent studies indicate that the appendix may be a dedicated environment for friendly bacteria which facilitate digestion and fight infection. Appendicitis generally affects people aged between 10 and 30, but it can strike at any age. Approximately 250,000 appendectomies are performed in the United States each year to treat appendicitis. What causes appendicitis? Experts believe there are two likely causes: Appendix (PSF) The appendix is on the right side of the abdomen, connected to the colon Infection - a stomach infection may have found its way to the appendix. Obstruction - a hard piece of stool may have got trapped in the appendix. The bacteria in the trapped stool may then have infected the appendix. Scientists at the University of Calgary, Canada, found a link between high pollution levels and a higher incidence of appendicitis. What are the symptoms of appendicitis? Initially, some pain can be felt anywhere in the stomach area, but later, as it intensifies, its location becomes more defined in the lower right-hand side of the abdomen - an area known as McBurney point. The following symptoms are common: Progressively worsening pain Coughing or sneezing is painful Nausea Vomiting Diarrhea Inability to pass gas (break wind, fart) Fever Constipation Loss of appetite. Anybody who experiences a progressively worsening pain in the abdomen should seek medical attention. Other conditions may have similar symptoms, such as urinary tract infection; even so, they all require urgent medical attention. Diagnosing appendicitis Diagnosing appendicitis can be challenging. Half of all patients who have appendicitis do not have typical symptoms - the pain may be located in different parts of the body. Other conditions may have very similar symptoms, such as gastroenteritis, urinary tract infection, ectopic pregnancy, Crohn's disease, or a kidney stone. Not everybody has their appendix in exactly the same place - some are located behind the colon, behind the liver, or in the pelvis. A GP (general practitioner, primary care physician) will examine the patient and ask some questions related to symptoms. He/she will apply pressure to the area to see if it worsens the pain. If typical appendicitis signs and symptoms are detected, the GP will diagnose appendicitis. If they are not, further tests will be ordered: A blood test - to determine whether there is an infection. Urine test - this will identify a kidney or bladder infection. Researchers at the Proteomics Center at Children's Hospital Boston, USA, demonstrated that a protein detectable in urine might serve as a biomarker for appendicitis. An MRI, CT or ultrasound scan - to view a 3-D image of the appendix and see whether it is inflamed (swollen). Color Doppler ultrasound, not CT, should be the first imaging examination for adult patients with suspected acute appendicitis, say researchers at Rambam Health Care Campus in Haifa, Israel. Sometimes a decision will be made to surgically remove the appendix because it is too risky to wait around for the tests to confirm the diagnosis. Researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, found that pregnant women suspected of having appendicitis are often misdiagnosed and undergo unnecessary appendectomies that can result in early delivery or loss of the fetus. What is the treatment for appendicitis? Doctors may decide to treat the patient with antibiotics. This is rare and the infection would need to be very mild. In most cases an appendectomy will be performed - the appendix will be surgically removed. Laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) Laparoscopic surgery is also known as minimally invasive surgery (MIS), bandaid surgery, or keyhole surgery. The surgeon inserts a very thin tube (laparoscope), which has a tiny video camera and its own lighting, into the abdomen through a cannula. A cannula is a hollow instrument. Thanks to the tiny video camera, the surgeon can view the insides of the abdomen with magnification on a monitor. Tiny instruments respond to the movements of the surgeon's hands and the appendix is removed through small abdominal incisions. Thanks to the precision of the operation, minimal loss of blood, and the need for very small incisions, the patient recovers much faster and with less scarring, compared to traditional open surgery. In most cases it is no longer necessary to open the patient up with a large incision. However, a report in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons suggests that a traditional, open appendectomy may be preferable to a less-invasive laparoscopic appendectomy for most patients with acute appendicitis, contrary to recent trends. Apparently, laparoscopic surgery increases costs and may raise the risk of complications in the majority of appendectomy patients. Sometimes traditional surgery is necessary: If the appendix has ruptured and infection has spread, or if there is an abscess, a larger incision will be made so that the area inside the abdominal cavity can be cleaned. Traditional appendectomy is also used if the patient has tumors in the digestive system, if a woman is in her third trimester of pregnancy, or if the patient had many abdominals surgeries before. After the operation the patient will be given antibiotics intravenously. Delaying surgery: If the patient has had symptoms for at least five days the doctor may recommend a course of antibiotics in order to shrink the appendix and clear up surrounding infection, and perform surgery later. Researchers from the Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre NIHR Biomedical Research Unit, England, explained that surgery does not have to be the first line of treatment for acute uncomplicated appendicitis - antibiotics may be a safe and viable alternative. They published their study in the BMJ (April 2012 issue). Scientists from Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris and Université Paris XI, Paris, France, disagreed. They wrote in The Lancet (May 2011 issue) that surgery for appendicitis much more effective than antibiotics. If there is an abscess the doctor may decide to drain it first and operate at a later date. What are the complications of appendicitis? Peritonitis: If the appendix ruptures and releases the infection into the abdomen the patient may develop peritonitis. The peritoneum will become inflamed. The peritoneum is the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and covers most of the abdominal organs. Peritonitis causes the bowels to shut down - bowel movements will stop and the bowel will become blocked. The patient will develop a fever and could go into shock. Peritonitis requires urgent treatment. Abscess: If the infection seeps out of the appendix and mixes with intestinal contents, it may form an abscess. If the abscess is not treated it can cause peritonitis. Sometimes abscesses are treated with antibiotics. Often they are surgically drained with the aid of a tube which is placed into the abdomen. Prevention: Countries with lower incidences of appendicitis also tend to have more fiber in their people's diets, compared to other countries. It would therefore be logical to assume that a high fiber diet may help reduce your chances of developing appendicitis. One theory is that with a high fiber diet the resulting softer stools are less likely to get trapped in the appendix. Wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Dame Patience Jonathan, on Monday urged Nigerians, especially women to re-elect the President in the 2015 election. The First Lady said it is time for Nigerian women to show appreciation to President Jonathan by coming out en mass to vote for him, for being gender sensitive by appointing women into key political offices. She made the call while declaring open a two- day national conference on women and 2015 election in Abuja. The conference with the theme: “Making a Difference,” was put together by the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and the United Nations Development Project (UNDP). The Minister of Water Resources, Sarah Ochekpe, who represented the First Lady, stated that women must be ready to invest their time and resources to create more opportunities for their participations in policy making as well contribute their quota to nation’s economic and political growth. Ochekpe, who called on the National Assembly to implement the national policy for gender, however charged women especially political aspirants to seize the opportunity of the conference to acquire leadership trainings and be informed of the of the proper electoral processes that will improve the country. Authorities of the Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) in Lagos on Wednesday warned students against participating in cultism, gangsterism and other vices that could endanger their careers on campus. The Director of the Public Relations Unite of the college, Mr Charles Oni, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. Oni said the college would no longer tolerate acts of indiscipline from students on campus. He advised students to focus their attention on their studies, which he said was the primary reason for their stay in the college. “We have zero tolerance for cultism and gangsterism and other negative conducts on our campus; everybody is now being closely watched. “Our certificate is issue based on intellectualism; we want the college to continue to produce graduates who will make the college proud.’’ The director attributed students joining bad companies to a lack of parental control, monitoring and love. “Most parents have abandoned the training of their children to schools, churches and mosques. “Many students have gone astray because their parents and guardians have failed in their role.” Oni said that lecturers in the college had been saddled with the responsibilities of educating and mentoring students on morals. “The lecturers have now imbibed the role of being parents to their students rather than just being teachers. “And with their role as both lecturers and parents, they will be able to transform their students to better persons,’’ he said. Oni said that the college authorities were also doing everything possible to beef-up security on the campus. “We have patrol vehicles going round the campus 24 hours everyday to ensure safety on the campus.” Oni recalled that some students of the college were rusticated last August for indulging in cult activities after they were found culpable. He said that following the incident, the authorities had organised various orientation courses for both fresh and returning students to forestall a re-occurrence. “Now, once any student is caught or suspected, such student will first be withdrawn from the hostel,” he stated. Oni urged parents and guardians not to neglect or abandon their children in tertiary institutions under the assumption that they were matured enough to take care of themselves. WHO WAS THOMAS SANKARA? (A MUST READ): By Chika Ezeanya: 1. Thomas Sankara was Burkina Faso’s president from August 1983 until his assassination on October 15, 1987. PERHAPS MORE THAN ANY OTHER AFRICAN PRESIDENT IN LIVING MEMORY, THOMAS SANKARA, IN FOUR YEARS, TRANSFORMED BURKINA FASO FROM A POOR COUNTRY, DEPENDENT ON AID, TO AN ECONOMICALLY INDEPENDENT AND SOCIALLY PROGRESSIVE NATION. 2. Thomas Sankara began by purging the deeply entrenched bureaucratic and institutional corruption in Burkina Faso. He slashed the salaries of ministers and sold off the fleet of exotic cars in the president’s convoy, opting instead for the cheapest brand of car available in Burkina Faso, Renault 5. His salary was $450 per month and he refused to use the air conditioning units in his office, saying that he felt guilty doing so, since very few of his country people could afford it. Thomas Sankara would not let his portrait be hung in offices and government institutions in Burkina Faso, because every Burkinabe is a Thomas Sankara, he declared. Sankara changed the name of the country from the colonially imposed Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, which means land of upright men. 3. Thomas Sankara’s achievements are numerous and can only be summarized briefly; within the first year of his leadership, Sankara embarked on an unprecedented mass vaccination program that saw 2.5 million Burkinabe children vaccinated. From an alarming 280 deaths for every 1,000 births, infant mortality was immediately slashed to below 145 deaths per 1,000 live births. Sankara preached self reliance, he banned the importation of several items into Burkina Faso, and encouraged the growth of the local industry. It was not long before Burkinabes were wearing 100% cotton sourced, woven and tailored in Burkina Faso. From being a net importer of food, Thomas Sankara began to aggressively promote agriculture in Burkina Faso, telling his country people to quit eating imported rice and grain from Europe, “let us consume only what we ourselves control,” he emphasized. In less than 4 years, Burkina Faso became self sufficient in food production through the redistribution of lands from the hands of corrupt chiefs and land owners to local farmers, and through massive irrigation and fertilizer distribution programs. Thomas Sankara utilized various policies and government assistance to encourage Burkinabes to get education. In less than two years as president, school attendance jumped from about 10% to a little below 25%, thus overturning the 90% illiteracy rate he met upon assumption of office. 4. Living way ahead of his time, within 12 months of his leadership, Sankara vigorously pursued a reforestation program that saw over 10 million trees planted around the country in order to push back the encroachment of the Sahara Desert. Uncommon at the time he lived, Sankara stressed women empowerment and campaigned for the dignity of women in a traditional patriarchal society. He employed women in several government positions and declared a day of solidarity with housewives by mandating their husbands to take on their roles for 24 hours. A personal fitness enthusiast, Sankara encouraged Burkinabes to be fit and was regularly seen jogging unaccompanied on the streets of Ouagadougou; his waistline remained the same throughout his tenure as president. 5. In 1987, during a meeting of African leaders under the auspices of the Organization of African Unity, Thomas Sankara tried to convince his peers to turn their backs on the debt owed western nations. According to him, “debt is a cleverly managed reconquest of Africa. It is a reconquest that turns each one of us into a financial slave.” He would not request for, nor accept aid from the west, noting that “…welfare and aid policies have only ended up disorganizing us, subjugating us, and robbing us of a sense of responsibility for our own economic, political, and cultural affairs. We chose to risk new paths to achieve greater well-being.” 6. Thomas Sankara was a pan-Africanist who spoke out against apartheid, telling French President Jacques Chirac, during his visit to Burkina Faso, that it was wrong for him to support the apartheid government and that he must be ready to bear the consequences of his actions. Sankara’s policies and his unapologetic anti-imperialist stand made him an enemy of France, Burkina Faso’s former colonial master. He spoke truth to power fearlessly and paid with his life. Upon his assassination, his most valuable possessions were a car, a refrigerator, three guitars, motorcycles, a broken down freezer and about $400 in cash. 7. In death, Thomas Sankara’s burial place is unkempt and filled with weeds (click to see Thomas Sankara’s graveyard https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bY2UpSxXPlw ). Few young Africans have ever heard of Thomas Sankara. In reality, it is not the assassination of Thomas Sankara that has dealt a lethal blow to Africa and Africans; it is the assassination of his memory, as manifested in the indifference to his legacy, in the lack of constant reference to his ideals and ideas by Africans, by those who know and those who should know. Among physical and mental dirt and debris lie Africa’s heroes while the younger generations search in vain for role models from among their kind. Africans have therefore, internalized self-abhorrence and the convictions of innate incapability to bring about transformation. Transformation must run contrary to the African’s DNA, many Africans subconsciously believe. 8. Africans are not given to celebrating their own heroes, but this must change. It is a colonial legacy that was instituted to establish the inferiority of the colonized and justify colonialism. It was a strategic policy that ensured that Africans celebrated the heroes of their colonial masters, but not that of Africa. Fifty years and counting after colonialism ended, Africa’s curriculum must now be redrafted to reflect the numerous achievements of Africans. The present generation of Africans are thirsty, searching for where to draw the moral, intellectual and spiritual courage to effect change. The waters to quench the thirst, as other continents have already established, lies fundamentally in history – in Africa’s forbears, men, women and children who experienced much of what most Africans currently experience, but who chose to toe a different path. The media, entertainment industry, civil society groups, writers, institutions and organizations must begin to search out and include African role models, case studies and examples in their contents. 9. For Africans, the strength desperately needed for the transformation of the continent cannot be drawn from World Bank and IMF policies, from aid and assistance obtained from China, India, the United States or Europe. The strength to transform Africa lies in the foundations laid by uncommon heroes like Thomas Sankara; a man who showed Africa and the world that with a single minded pursuit of purpose, the worst can be made the best, and in record time, too. Below is a report I just received from a student from the school. Read below… https://brainnewsng.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/UNICAL-LECTURER-STAPS.jpg https://brainnewsng.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/UNICAL-LECTURER.jpg A student of Computer Science Department of University of Calabar name withheld almost lost his sight after a lecturer known as Chris Otu in the Department of Economics, University of Calabar stabbed him with his-car key during lecture hour. According to an eye-withness Mr Otu was supposed to have a class with year 3 students of Computer Science Department by 10.am, today 21 Nov. but he failed to appear after keeping the students waiting for two hours, he later appeared by 12-noon. After the lecturer’s arrival, the waiting students assembled themselves at the lecture venue New CES building room 7 behind Unical Library. The victimized student who is the lecturer’s class rep. took white board markers to the lecturer (Mr. Otu) which is a regular routine in various Universities in Nigeria. But the lecturer for no reason premeditatedly used a book in his hand to hit the student on his head and as if that was not enough, he stabbed him with his car key and walked him out of the class. The injury was bleeding profusely when the lecturer who felt zero remorse told the injured student and other students in the class to go and ask around who he is. Mr Chris Otu who lost one of his eyes during a battle is believed to be an ex-cultist and because this is Nigeria, he claims nothing can be done to him. Now, they decided to take the case to the media. Hope the university authority will look into this… SOURCE: http://brainnewsng.com/photos-unical-economics-lecturer-allegedly-stabs-student-in-the-eye/ |

AKWA IBOM 2015: UDOM CALLS NIGERIA’S FIRST LADY ENEMY OF AKWA IBOM, PREPARES YOUTHS FOR RAMPAGE: A frontline Governorship aspirant in Akwa Ibom State, alleged to be Governor Godswill Akpabio’s ‘anointed,’ Mr. Udom Emmanuel, is said to be on a campaign of calumny against Nigeria’s First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, whom he sees as an impediment to his aspiration. Investigation revealed that Mr. Emmanuel, the immediate past Secretary to the State Government (SSG), through some of his recent actions and statements, inciting youths against the First Lady. In a statement, one of the Youth leaders, Mr. Michael Okon, accused the First Lady of trying to manipulate the list of just concluded Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) ad hoc delegate congresses in the state, threatening that youths of the state will resist such manipulation to any level. “Mr. President Sir, it is no longer hear-say that the unseen hand behind the problems in State PDP regarding the ad hoc delegate list result of Saturday, November 1, 2014, hangs on the neck of our supposed First Lady. We are compelled to say, without reservation for apology, that she is overheating the polity. I tell you, this act will further make us to be susceptible to the opposition, particularly APC. We do not want to be spoon-fed by anybody, neither do we want to be decided for,” the statement stated. The statement which was tagged “Dame Patience Ebele Jonathan: The Unseen Nemesis of our future,” also indicted the National Chairman of PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, and National Working Committee (NWC) members of the party of foul play. “This is a call to all youths of Akwa Ibom State to rise and disparage the hanky-panky of the Presidency. We have worked, toiled, and slaved to have the our future, our dream and no First Lady, No Muazu, No NWC member will take our right and throw it to the mud.” The statement concluded by insisting that their principal, the former SSG, won in a landslide, at the just concluded congresses, according to the statement, “the just concluded delegate congresses of our great Party, PDP, no doubt saw Elder Udom Emmanuel on the lead, but we hearing a different tune from Abuja. It shall not stand. We know what we want as youths of this state and nobody will stay in Abuja and decide for us.” Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom Coalition for Good Governance has described the allegation as false and baseless, and urged the security agencies to look into the matter and bring the youth leader to book for trying to throw mud on the Presidency. The group in a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Unyime Usanga, also copied the Inspector General of Police, the Director of Department of Security Service and the National Chairman of PDP, urging them to verify how the said youth leader managed to know the result of the congresses, a sacred document of PDP, to the extent of saying it was tampered with. “We disassociate ourselves from insult meted on our country’s First Lady and the Presidency. As we all know, the ad hoc delegate list is a sacred document of the party. It is usually published on the eve of the primaries. So, we urged the security agencies to bring this culprits and their sponsor to verify how they managed to know that such document was tampered with by the First lady, who is neither a member of PDP nor a member of its NWC,” the statement urged. “From the statement of the youth leader in support of the aspiration of Udom Emmanuel, one is quick to observe that he has urged youths within his control to fight against the leadership of the party at the national level, which is contrary to the norms of the party. We also know that this alleged fight may be mere media propaganda. We are not adamant to the tricks and antics of desperate politicians, but we wish to tell the Presidency that Akwa Ibom State is known for peace, if any rancor commence thereafter, Mr. Michael Okon and his sponsor should be held responsible.” They called on Mr. Michael Okon and his groups to account for the result sheets of the Ward Congresses in the state so as to prove to the public that their principal was the winner of the congress; else their allegation will be considered baseless and cheap blackmail.
